PinOut is a fun game that puts a futuristic twist on a classic

It's probably safe to say that everyone has played pinball at some point in their lives – whether it's the analog version that dates all the way back to the 18th century or the digital version that came preinstalled with Windows. Well, Mediocre is putting a futuristic twist on this classic game that we all know and love, and I have to say, not only am I nostalgic, but I'm completely hooked.

You may know some of the other games that Mediocre has created – Smash Hit, Does not Commute, Granny Smith to name a few. They're all vastly different from one another, but they're far from mediocre, that's for sure. All of them are strikingly original – sometimes outright bizarre – and immensely enjoyable. And I'm happy to report that PinOut is no exception.

The game cannot be any simpler. Once you hit the start button, the ball is ejected, and you have two controls: left and right. You flick up the left side of your screen to bounce the ball off from the left flapper, and the right side of your screen for the right flapper. But the real thrill comes from the time limit. Initially you're given 60 seconds, but as you go through different levels, there are ways to gain more time. The end goal is to see how far you can go within the given time.

Apart from the insanely simple controls, what I absolutely love about the game is the graphics. The Tron-like lights are neatly integrated into the experience and add to the futuristic vibe. Pinball, as a game, has undergone various changes: from rolling stones on grass during the premodern era to a digitized game on a desktop. If pinball were to see yet another evolution, I'd say PinOut is it.
