The games are fairly simple and you can find basic board games like Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Gomoku, Go, and many others. There are free versions of each game so you can play them without spending any money. You can also buy the premium versions for relatively cheap to support the developer and gain a few extra features. They're not graphically intensive which makes them great for lower end devices and many of them support local multiplayer!
Battleships

Battleships is a free game that is similar to the popular game Battleship. For those who have never played, Battleships is a game where you and an opponent post up your ships on a game board. You then take turns guessing where each other's boats are. The winner is the first one to sink all of the opponent's boats. It features online game play, achievements, and more. It's simple, but fun and it works well.
Carcassonne

Carcassonne is a tile-based board game where you create your game board every time you play. The way it works is you lay a tile every turn and then deploy various units to strategically take the board. The winner is the one with the most points at the end. There are a maximum of six players in every game and you can play online if you want to. Because of this, it's one of the best board games available if you want to play with a ton of people. You can also purchase expansion packs to give you more play options.
Catan

Catan is a popular board game and a favorite of our own Gary Sims. The premise of this one is that you compete with other players to create settlements on the board. Your goal is to create the longest road with the largest army in order to win. It features online multiplayer with several players or you can play offline with AI competitors. You can also purchase expansion packs through in-app purchases to play more than ten additional scenarios. It's a fun, simple game that's a lot of fun to play.
Elder Sign: Omens

Elder Sign: Omen is one of the first generation of board games on Android and it remains one of the best. It's a mystery themed game where you search over the board for various clues, arcane items, and more. The players will be competing for a limited number of Ancient Ones and the number can be changed in order to manage the game's difficulty. Like others, you can get an expansion through in-app purchases if you want to. The only caveat is that the game hasn't been updated sine 2014. It should still work on newer devices

Galaxy Trucker

Galaxy Trucker is one of the relatively newer board games on Android. The premise of this one is to build a spaceship out of various materials that can survive the harshness of space and all of its various obstacles. It's a tile-laying game not unlike Carcassonne, except you use the tiles to build ships instead of building the game board. This one features a campaign mode, online multiplayer mode, and you can play the game in real-time or turn-based if you prefer. Right now, it's $4.99 without any in-app purchases.
Mighty Dungeons

Might Dungeons is a hybrid of a dungeon-crawling RPG and a board game. It has the basic mechanics of a dungeon crawler where you walk around on various levels, slay bad guys, and collect loot. There is also a board game aspect similar to what you see in games like Warhammer, where your character moves across the board and can attack bad guys. It's an interesting combination of two popular concepts and it works rather well. You can pick it up for cheap and there are no in-app purchases
Mr Jack Pocket

Mr Jack Pocket is one of the older board games on Android and it's still great today. This game has two sides. You can play as Jack Pocket and your job will be to escape before being captured by the police. On the other side, you can play as Sherlock Holmes and Watson and your job will be to track down and capture Jack Pocket before he leaves. The game also has three difficulty levels as well as leaderboards to see how you stack up against the world. It's a tad pricey, but there are no in-app purchases.
Neuroshima Hex

Neuroshima Hex is one of the more popular board games on Android. It's a strategic tile-based game where you control one of four armies and your job is to struggle for influence and board space against the other armies. The game features three difficulty settings and allows for up to four players. The players can be AI controlled or you can invite friends to play on local multiplayer as well. You can also purchase additional stuff for the game through in-app purchases. It's ranked 100th on the best board games ever list by BoardGameGeek also.
Pandemic: The Board Game

Pandemic: The Board Game is a cooperative board game where you must travel the world and cure diseases before it destroys everything. It's playable with up to four players and each player has a different ability to contribute to the whole. It features pass-and-play (local) multiplayer or you can play by yourself in multiple roles if you want to play alone. It features several expansions that you can purchase through in-app purchases and it's one of the highest rated games in the Play Store. It's pretty fantastic, honestly.

Splendor

Splendor is a card-based board game with a lot to do. The main point of the game is to become the biggest jewel merchant out of any of the other players. It features a solo mode or a pass-and-play local multiplayer that supports up to four players. On top of single and multiplayer, there is also a set of challenges where you must satisfy certain conditions in a certain number of moves. The game also features leaderboards, achievements, and tutorials to help you get started.
Talisman

Talisman is one of the more involved board games out there. In this one, you take a quest to find the ultimate treasure. Over the course of the game, you level up your adventurer and try to keep going. Each adventurer has their own set of strengths and weaknesses and your goal is to exploit those against the other players to win the game. It's surprisingly in-depth and you can play it with up to six players in total. It features pass-and-play local multiplayer as well as online multiplayer or you can play by yourself. There are also expansions available through in-app purchases.
Ticket to Ride

Ticket to Ride is one of the more popular board games outside of mobile and it's doing pretty good on mobile as well. In this one, your job is to build the longest train tracks to join two cities together. You get points based on whether or not you can complete your tracks and how long you can make your track. You can play with up to four players and it supports pass-and-play local multiplayer. You get the United States map for free and you can buy other countries as in-app purchases.
Words With Friends

Words With Friends is an intensely popular game that is based on Scrabble. Your job is to form words with letters that you draw and then your opponents play words using words you've already laid down and vice versa. It's one of the older board games and many people know how the mechanics in this one are supposed to work. It's played entirely online against either your friends or random people on the Internet. It features cross-platform support, an in-game chat, and more. It's a freemium title which isn't ideal, but you should be able to play an unlimited number of games for free.
Yahtzee With Buddies

Yahtzee With Buddies is a mobile adaptation of the classic Yahtzee board game. The premise behind this one is you must roll dice and fill out a scorecard. You get points based on how well you can fill them in. For instance, there is a slot for rolling fours on the dice. You can fill it in with one four and get four points or you can fill it in with four fours and get 16 points. It's simple to play and the online component makes it easy to find people to play with you. It's officially licensed and there are a variety of other activities you can play. It's a freemium game which isn't great, but it's still pretty fun.
