IFA 2016: live from Europe’s largest tech show

IFA-Header3

Samsung has sent out its press conference invites teasing the Gear S3 smartwatch, the LG V20 is scheduled to debut on September 6 in San Francisco (but might be around for a sneak peek during IFA if we're lucky), Sony's rumored new flagships look more and more likely, the Asus Zenwatch 3 will be round and there's new information from Huawei, Xiaomi and Motorola below…

IFA is Europe's largest consumer electronics trade show and is held in Berlin each year around September. IFA stands for Internationale Funkaustellung (hence the abbreviation) and began its life back in 1924 as a radio exhibition.

Alongside Mobile World Congress in February-March, IFA is one of the main events on the trade show calendar for new device announcements, although more and more manufacturers have been opting for earlier release cycles and standalone events in recent years.

When is IFA and how do I get tickets?

IFA 2016 will be held this year between September 2 – 7 with press events held a couple of days before. That means you should keep your eyes peeled for new device announcements on August 31 and September 1.

IFA 2016 will, as always, be held at the Messe Berlin exhibition grounds in the west end of the city. This year, another venue will be added at IFA Global Markets at Station Berlin in Gleisdreieck between September 4 – 7.

Entry to IFA is open to the public, with one-day tickets available from €39 and two-day tickets from €56 if you pre-book, with prices rising to €49 and €72, respectively, if you buy at the event itself.

Samsung at IFA 2016

samsung gear s2 review aa (7 of 9)

Samsung may have pre-empted the Galaxy Note series' traditional unveiling time at IFA by launching the Galaxy Note 7 at the start of August, but that doesn't mean Samsung won't have anything to show in September. The company has just sent out mobile-only press conference invitations for August 31, with the hands of a watch on the invite. A previous invite for September 1 will cover the rest of Samsung's IFA showcase.

So the successor to the super-impressive Gear S2 smartwatch named the Gear S3 will arrive at IFA. We'll hopefully also get some exciting new announcements for the wearable version of Tizen OS – perhaps standalone apps like on Android Wear?

We may also see new tablets and mid-range phones from Samsung, one of which is likely to be the 4:3 aspect ratio Galaxy Tab S3. The updated USB Type-C version of the Gear VR launched alongside the Note 7 in August but it will also be at IFA for everyone that didn't already pick one up on August 19.

LG at IFA 2016

LG V10 Hands On-12

Last year LG dropped the LG Watch Urbane Luxe – a 23-karat gold version of its standard Watch Urbane wearable. It's possible that LG will have a new wearable at IFA, but we've heard nothing indicating it as a certainty. More LG Friends for the G5 would be good, especially if we get a speaker or game controller.

The reason LG had no major smartphone announcements at IFA 2015 was because the company was quietly preparing to announce the LG V10 which arrived in October. With that in mind, we can hope to see the LG V20 at IFA 2016 – although not officially, as the LG V20 will be unveiled on September 6 in San Francisco – and potentially a new smartwatch as well.

If the new LG V20 renders are anything to go by though, we're looking at more of a modular G5 successor than a true successor to the V10.

Huawei at IFA 2016

huawei watch review aa (27 of 33)

At last year's IFA, Huawei quietly delivered the Huawei Watch, a slim, stylish and highly underrated smartwatch. Its designer confirmed there was a follow-up in the works, so it's possible we'll see the Huawei Watch 2 at this year's IFA.

Of course, the general downturn in the wearable market might mean the project has been scrapped – as the OnePlus smartwatch was – but Huawei's fortunes are a lot more established than those of OnePlus, so you never know.

It's highly likely we'll see a successor to the popular Mate 8 unveiled at Huawei's September 1 event, undoubtedly called the Huawei Mate 9. Huawei has just trademarked the named SuperCharge which likely refers to the battery tech to be included in the Mate 9.

Huawei also announced the Mate S last year at IFA, which arrived with a fingerprint scanner you could use to scroll through menus and galleries as well as a Force Touch display on the 128 GB version. While that particular variant ended up being rarer than hen's teeth, the Mate S was generally well received. So much so that we may well see a Mate S2 at IFA 2016 as well.

Xiaomi at IFA 2016

Xiaomi-Mi-Note-22

Xiaomi has already begun teasing its Mi Note 2 which will either be unveiled at IFA or just before on August 25. Meanwhile, Xiaomi's co-founder Li Wanqiang has apparently confirmed that Xiaomi will announce a new $600 smartphone this year, and all bets are on it being the high-end version of the Mi Note 2. The Redmi 4 is also expected to arrive alongside the Mi Note 2, whether it's at IFA or a little earlier.

Sony at IFA 2016

Sony XPERIA X (Bailey)-1

Sony will hold a Playstation Experience event in December 2016, so its Playstation VR is unlikely to see the spotlight at IFA. Sony may have new phones planned for IFA though – it released the Xperia Z5 range at last year's IFA after all. But considering the Xperia X series has replaced the Xperia Z series and that new product line only just arrived at MWC 2016, Sony's activities for IFA are a bit of a mystery.

The latest rumors have Sony announcing not one, but two, new phones at IFA 2016. With model numbers F8331 and F8332, the details are a little murky, but the Xperia XR name has been bandied about. Will Sony stick with its "two flagships a year" strategy and deliver an Xperia X2 range? Or will the Xperia Z6 rise from the ashes after all? We'll just have to wait until Sony's press conference on September 1 to find out.

HTC at IFA 2016

HTC-Vive-1

With its storied financial troubles and new focus on VR, HTC will probably not have anything major to show off at IFA. We may get a couple of new Butterfly devices (the new Desire 10 Lifestyle and Desire 10 Pro are scheduled for a late September launch) and maybe even another wacky collaboration like the Re Camera or Under Armor Health Box. With the HTC 10 barely six months old, we certainly won't get a new flagship phone.

The perennial HTC smartwatch saga continues with repeated launch dates bandied about before the whole project gets delayed once again. Considering how long it has taken and how unexciting most smartwatches have turned out to be, HTC might be better off leaving this one on the drawing board.

Motorola/Lenovo at IFA 2016

moto-360-2nd-gen-review-aa-4-of-27

Considering Motorola announced devices ahead of IFA last year, we may not see any smartphone announcements this year either. Of course, the Lenovo Moto Z and Moto Z Force have already been announced, not long after the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus. But a new IFA teaser from Lenovo indicates we'll be seeing the Moto 360 (2016) as well as some new Moto Mods at the very least.

Lenovo also announced a whole batch of new phones at its TechWorld event as well as the world's first Project Tango smartphone, the PHAB 2 Pro. Lenovo has a bunch of other fun products up its sleeve though, like the Yoga tablet range, a funky folding tablet (and those cool bendy smartphones) and mid-range devices in the Vibe series.

Lenovo has already sent out invites for a press event on August 31 and also promised a "whole new kind of intuitive keyboard" on a cool folding tablet/slate thing. More laptops and hybrids are also in store.

Asus at IFA 2016

ASUS Zenfone Zoom Hands On-20

Asus had a decent product lineup at last year's IFA, including the ZenWatch 2, Zenfone Zoom and Zenfone Max. In the past, Asus has announced its new Zenfones at CES in Las Vegas in January (as it did in 2015), or at Computex in May (as it did this year).

At IFA then we will potentially only be looking at new variants of the Zenfone 3 or an updated (and round!) ZenWatch 3. Asus' press conference is scheduled for August 31 as well.

ZTE at IFA 2016

ZTE AXON Elite ifa aa (17 of 21)

ZTE has a handy habit of announcing its trade show lineup in advance of the actual show. For IFA, that doesn't typically happen until August sometime, but last year ZTE dropped the global version of its Axon device, the Axon Elite. There was also a new Nubia, Spro projector and the Blade V6. Whether we can expect successors to all of these is still a mystery, but it won't be long before ZTE tells us exactly what is coming.

Alcatel at IFA 2016

Alcatel-Xess-3

Alcatel will have a whole host of new OneTouch devices in its IFA schedule. The company may also have a successor to its OneTouch Go Smartwatch which debuted at last year's IFA, assuming the budget wearable gamble paid off for the company.

If you were paying attention last year you might also remember the insane Xess tablet (pictured above), the massive 17.3-inch stainless steel tablet which felt more like a portable cinema monitor than a regular tablet. While I don't know if that device was successful enough to warrant a follow-up, I'd love to see one anyway.

Acer at IFA 2016

Acer has already sent out invitations to its unveiling at IFA 2016 to be held on August 31. No details are yet forthcoming, but Acer just released a smartphone called the Liquid Zest Plus a couple months ago, so it might be too soon for a new flagship.

With Acer collaborating with StarVR on their virtual reality headset its certainly possible we could see some related announcements to this VR collab at IFA. We'll likely see at least one new Chromebook too and maybe even the official launch of the mythical Predator 6 gaming phone.

Fitbit at IFA 2016

Fitbit Charge HR vs Garmin vivosmart HR 2

Fitbit is also rumored to have two new products ready for the spotlight at IFA in September. The team at Wareable has it on good authority that two new devices – codenamed Laryon and Fermion – are currently being field tested for an IFA launch. They will most likely be unveiled as the Fitbit Flex 2 and Fitbit Charge 2, as both names were recently trademarked by the company.

NVIDIA at IFA 2016

NVIDIA reportedly had a new SHIELD tablet in the works for 2016, but a dismissal letter to the FCC indicates that tablet will never see the light of day. IFA would be the obvious venue for an unveiling of the still-rumored Shield Portable, but we'll just have to wait and see. NVIDIA has plenty of other irons in the fire though, including chipsets (duh) and driverless cars, so some fun new demos might make an appearance.

That's it for now, but we'll update this post with all the latest news and rumors, so be sure to check back in closer to the date.

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass SR+ for wearables

corning gorila glass sr+

The future of wearable technology is vast, and companies know this. That's why we are seeing more and more wearable-specific components: Qualcomm introduced its very first wearable chipset earlier this year, and now Corning is following suit. The all new Gorilla Glass SR+ is designed with smartwatches in mind, focusing on scratch-resistance and optical transmission.

Corning first announced "Project Phire" back in 2015: it was an attempt to create a material for wearable technology that would combine the best features of its very own Gorilla Glass and sapphire. And Gorilla Glass SR+ is the result of this research. It boasts the durability of Gorilla Glass and (almost) the scratch-resistance of sapphire all the while being extremely thin and transparent.

Sapphire GlassSee also: Is sapphire glass the next big thing in mobile devices?30

Combining sapphire and technology isn't a novel concept at all. Back in 2014, we saw the launch of the Kyocera Brigadier, rocking a 4.5-inch Sapphire Shield screen. Apple's iPhones have had a sapphire home button for quite some time now. And the high-end Apple Watch comes with sapphire protection over its screen.

Sapphire is, in fact, remarkably hard, which makes it almost as scratch-resistant as diamond. Why isn't everyone using sapphire then, especially companies like Samsung and Apple? Well, there are a few factors that suggest sapphire alone cannot be the answer.

First is availability (or the lack thereof): Apple was rumored to bring sapphire protection to the iPhone 6, but that did not happen, and it's most likely to have been due to production issues. No company can deliver large enough quantities of the material to meet the demands of companies like Apple and Samsung. But there is a more practical reason too: sapphire's optical transmission is poor. Its sheer thickness and high reflective index mean things aren't as bright and visible as they can be.

That's precisely why Corning was so set on finding a balance – something that would be thin, clear, durable, and scratch-resistant all at the same time. According to Corning's figures, the all new Gorilla Glass SR+ is much more scratch-resistant than GG4 or GG5. In fact, it's almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire itself. However, it's at the same time almost as efficient in optical transmission as GG4 and GG5. Its thinness – which is comparable to GG4 and GG5 – plays a big role in it.

According to Corning's figures, the all new Gorilla Glass SR+ is much more scratch-resistant than GG4 or GG5. In fact, it's almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire itself.

It's unclear whether Gorilla Glass SR+ actually has sapphire in it, but one thing is for sure: smartwatches are about to become stronger with even more scratch-resistance. Gorilla Glass SR+ is set to hit the market later this year, which means we could see it in the upcoming Gear S3 or Apple Watch 2.

Do you own a smartwatch? How important is scratch-resistance when it comes to buying a wearable device? Let us know in the comments below!

Show Press Release

Corning Unveils Corning® Gorilla® Glass SR+, Designed to Overcome the Unique Challenges of Wearable Devices

CORNING, N.Y. | Corning Incorporated | August 30, 2016

Breakthrough glass composite delivers an unparalleled combination of toughness, scratch resistance and optical clarity for today's wearable devices

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today announced its groundbreaking innovation – Corning® Gorilla® Glass SR+. Specifically designed for wearable devices, this new glass composite significantly reduces visible scratches while delivering the toughness, optical clarity and touch sensitivity that make Gorilla Glass famous.

With rigorous daily activity, consumers put their wearable devices to the test, leaving them exposed to damage. To overcome the challenges facing the screens on these devices, Corning scientists developed a new glass composite engineered to better endure the bumps, knocks and scrapes wearables encounter while maintaining the optical clarity and touch sensitivity required for on-the-go connectivity.

In a league of its own

In lab tests, Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ demonstrated superior scratch resistance approaching that of alternative luxury cover materials, while delivering up to 70 percent better damage resistance against impacts and 25 percent better surface reflection than those alternative materials. Such step improvements in optical performance enable longer battery life and improved outdoor readability.

"In early 2015, Corning launched Project Phire with the goal of engineering glass-based solutions with the scratch resistance approaching luxury cover materials, combined with the superior damage resistance of Gorilla Glass," said Scott Forester, director, innovation products, Corning Gorilla Glass. "Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ delivers a superior combination of properties that is not available in any other material today – it is in a class of its own."

Leveraging its strengths in glass science and fusion manufacturing, Corning leads the cover glass industry it created nearly 10 years ago. Corning Gorilla Glass has been used on more than 4.5 billion devices worldwide, including more than 1,800 product models across 40 major brands. With the introduction of Corning Gorilla Glass SR+, the one company that has been innovating with glass for 165 years offers manufacturers of wearable devices a clear alternative to luxury cover materials.

Corning Gorilla Glass SR+ is commercially available and is expected to be on product models from leading global brands later this year.

Swiftkey update: phone number & email predictions back, 8 new languages and more

Facebook-Messenger-4

Swiftkey continues to be one of the most popular third-party keyboards in the Google Play Store, in big part thanks to its text prediction capabilities. It has been previously called a "mind-reading" system and does wonders, but it's not immune to bugs and a recent one was pretty serious. This bug was mixing up all users' predictions for phone numbers, emails and @ mentions.

The sync service was shut down for a while, but the latest update finally brings it back online. The system will now continue predicting your phone numbers, emails and @ mentions. There is a slight downside, though – Swiftkey mentions all previously learnt predictions of this type have been deleted. This pretty much means you will have to teach them to your keyboard all over again. This could be n inconvenience, but it shouldn't take long to get Swiftkey up to speed again.

Other improvements include the addition of 8 new languages: Kurdish, Aragonese, Maltese, Nynorsk, Frisian, Luxembourgish, Faroese and Asturian. They also added a couple fixes to the Talkback feature and the experience for Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge users.

Ready for some prediction goodness? Just go to the Google Play Store and grab the update!

Fossil launches their two new smartwatches in the US

fossil-q-marshal-wander

The smartwatch market is still in its infancy in many ways. While traditionally dominate corporations like Samsung continue to carve out their mobile niches in the market, those companies who were about wearables before they got smart are attempting to wedge their way into the future as well. Today Fossil announced their latest bid for the action with two new smart devices for your wrist.

These two Fossil Q-series devices have been available abroad, but this is the first time they're hitting the US market. They offer some pretty similar specs. The Q Marshal and Q Wander both sport the Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chipset under the hood, each with 4GB of internal storage to full from. They all have fully circular displays, unfortunately both with the egregious "flat tire" that was the bane of the Moto smartwatch line.

The Q Marshall and the Q Wander both have Bluetooth and WiFi support, but they're in many ways similar to the previous Fossil offering the Q Founder. They are smaller and more compact versions of the company's previous endeavor, clocking in with a 45mm diameter instead of 47mm.

fossil-q-marshal-wanderPreviously: Fossil's Q Wander and Q Marshal go up for preorder on August 127

This reduction in size has resulted in a decrease in battery size as well. While their forebearer rocked a clean 400mAh battery, these two devices come with 360mAh batteries.

You have a variety of options when it comes to bands, meaning the price of these smartwatches will vary somewhat in the range between $275 and $315.

We're on the fence about Fossil's competitiveness in the smartwatch industry. Do you think they're putting forward what it takes to compete? Let us know your take in the comments below!
