Get a look at the phone Samsung doesn’t want you to know about

While many of us are caught up with chasing after high-end flagships, the reality is that you don't need to spend a fortune on Samsung, LG, or HTC phone to get a high quality Android experience. Continuing the tradition that started with 2013's original Moto G, the new Moto G4 Plus is very affordable, but at the same time offers many of the same high-quality features you'd expect from a much more expensive device. As you can imagine, it's one device that Samsung and other competitors hopes stays under most consumers' radar.

What exactly does the Moto G4 Plus bring to the table? Let's take a closer look.

This sponsored post is brought to you by Motorola.

Design

Moto G4 Plus -10

At first glance, the new Moto G4 Plus retains a lot of the design language of its predecessors. There are a few minor aesthetic changes, but for the most part, the line of Moto G4 Plus features a design that is largely reminiscent of previous Motorola smartphones.

The Moto G4 Plus comes with an all plastic build, and despite appearances, the frame is plastic, albeit with a metallic finish. While this might not have the premium feeling you'd get from a metallic or glass build, the trade for plastic results in an extremely sturdy and durable built. It doesn't feel hollow, rattle, or creak in any way, and is a very solid phone overall. This is something that Motorola has always done a good job with, and its great to see this continue to be offered with the Moto G4 Plus.

Moto G4 Plus -5

On the back is the signature Motorola dimple, and the back cover has a nice texture to it, that helps a lot with the grip. However, the smooth finish of the sides does result in the phone being a touch slippery, but not enough to be a cause for concern. The back is also removable, and gives you access to the SIM card slot and the dedicated microSD card slot. While the back cover is removable, the battery is not.

The power button and volume rocker are found on the right side. The power button comes with a textured pattern that makes it easy to differentiate from the volume rocker. The buttons don't provide a lot of tactile feedback, which isn't really a big deal, but it is something to keep in mind. The headphone jack and the microUSB port are at the top and bottom respectively.

Display

Moto G4 Plus -9

Unlike previous generations of the Moto G, the IPS LCD display of the Moto G4 Plus has been bumped up to 5.5-inches, with resolution getting a boost to Full HD as well, resulting in a pixel density of 401 ppi.

The larger display and higher resolution allows for a more enjoyable experience when reading text, watching videos, and playing games. While the display might not be perfect, especially in a world of QHD offering, it does look sharp and offers good viewing angles. Additionally, the display is vibrant enough for the colors to not appear washed out. All in all, for the price, there's not much to complain about.

Performance

Moto G4 Plus -11

Under the hood, the Moto G4 Plus comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, clocked at 1.5 GHz, and backed by the Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB, 3 GB, or 4 GB of RAM, depending on which storage option you opt for.

You won't see record-breaking results when running benchmark tests, but as far as real world performance is concerned, everything is fast and responsive. Apps launch quickly, multi-tasking is smooth, and the device can handle gaming without much of a hitch.

Hardware

Moto G4 Plus -8

The Moto G4 Plus is available with 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB in built-in storage options, and as mentioned, this also dictates how much RAM you will be getting. There is also expandable storage via microSD card, up to an additional 256 GB. While there are versions of the device, depending on the market, that feature dual SIM capabilities, you will still get a dedicated microSD card slot, so the great news is that users won't have to make the choice between dual SIM support and expandable storage, which is often the case with other affordable smartphones out there.

The Moto G4 Plus comes with a single front-facing speaker above the display, and is a part of the earpiece. There is no stereo sound to be had, but the single speaker does sound pretty good, and is capable of getting decently sound without sounding tinny or distorted.

Moto G4 Plus -3

Also up front is a fingerprint scanner placed below the display. The fingerprint sensor is as fast and accurate as expected, and is comparable in quality to the scanners found with more high-end smartphones as well. Keep in mind that the scanner doesn't double as home button, but it can be used to help reveal your navigation keys when running a fullscreen app.

Keep in mind that the Moto G4 Plus is not water resistant this time around. While you will get some form of splash protection, that should keep it safe from a simple splash of water or a sprinkle of rain, these phones aren't IP-certified, and will not survive being submerged in the water.

Moto G4 Plus -4

The Moto G4 Plus comes with a 3,000 mAh non-removable battery, which has become the standard size for a lot of current generation smartphones. The battery has been pretty good, and the device can provide a full day of use with average usage that involves sending and receiving messages, browsing the web, checking social media, watching a few videos and playing games for a little while.

With more intense usage, such as when playing a lot of games or taking a lot of pictures, the battery does run out pretty quickly though. However, the Moto G4 Plus does come with fast charging capabilities, so you will be able to get back to a full charge in a short amount of time.

Camera

Moto G4 Plus -7

The camera is another hardware feature that is better on the Moto G4 Plus when compared to the other devices in the Moto G4 series. The Moto G4 Plus comes with a 16 MP rear camera with a f/2.0 aperture, phase detection auto focus, and a laser auto focus system, along with a 5 MP front-facing shooter. However, there is no optical image stabilization available, which is unfortunate.

Moto G4 Plus -12

The Motorola camera app has also been improved significantly, with there being a shutter button now that makes taking pictures with one hand easier, and the app in general is simpler and easier to use. A swipe from the left side opens up a menu for basic camera settings, and a button on the upper right corner lets you quickly switch between photo and video, along with a few other modes like panorama and slow motion video. The most notable change with the camera app is the addition of a manual mode, which is something that was definitely long overdue.

As far as picture quality is concerned, it is actually really good. Granted, it's not going to stack up favorably against the high-end Samsung and LG flagships out there, but for a device that is so inexpensive, the camera is certainly capable of taking some nice looking shots. In good lighting conditions, you get shots with plenty of detail and vibrant colors, and the images are sharp, without looking over sharpened.

Moto G4 Plus Camera Samples-18

Dynamic range isn't the best, with the camera tending to crush shadows a little too much, but that is all taken care of with HDR. Using HDR mode tones down the shadows and highlights, and adds some more vibrancy to the image, without making it appear unnatural or fake.

In low-light conditions however, is where the camera falls apart extremely quickly. We expect some noise to be present in images taken in poorly-lit situations, but the grain is quite significant with the Moto G4 Plus. Highlights are also typically overexposed, there isn't a lot of detail to be had, and the camera also has trouble finding a point of focus in low light.

If you're looking for a really good low-light smartphone camera, the Moto G4 Plus is unfortunately not going to cut it, but in most other situations, this camera more than gets the job done. The 5 MP front-facing camera comes with a wide angle lens, and proves to be more than adequate to cover all your selfie taking needs.

Software

Moto G4 Plus -16

On the software side of things, the Moto G4 Plus is running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and this is as close to stock Android as you can get without it being a Nexus smartphone. There is virtually no bloatware to be found, and the software package isn't as packed with features as what may be found with the high-end Motorola offerings.

There are some features available though, such as Moto Actions, which lets you do things like turning the flashlight on with a chopping motion, flipping the phone over to silence it when it rings, or launching the camera with a twist of your wrist. A simpler version of Motorola's ambient display feature is also available, but with there being no sensors on the front, it is entirely contingent on motion.

Moto G4 Plus -14

You can't wave your hand over the display to wake up the phone, and it also doesn't continuously pulsate to indicate notifications. The only time it lights up is when you take the phone out of your pocket or pick it up from a table, or when you initially receive a notification. Other than these Motorola features, the software package is entirely stock Android, and sometimes, a clean and simple experience is all you need to keep things smooth and snappy.

Wrap up

The Moto G4 Plus is available for a starting price of just $200. This a heck of a deal for such a reasonably spec'd device and it can even be customized using the Moto Maker, letting you choose between different back cover, accent colors, and you can even add an optional engraving.

While there's certainly a place for higher end flagships like the Moto Z and the Galaxy line, the reality is that for many consumers a device like the Moto G4 Plus offers the perfect amount of punch while still being relatively easy on the wallet. Despite the attempts by many competitors to usurp Motorola in the sub-$250 price bracket, there are still few phones that offer the same level of durability, reliability, and reputation that you get with the Moto G4 Plus.

Google confirms LG V20 first to run Nougat, not the next-gen Nexus

android-nougat-lg-v20-first

For the past few years, each new major Android release has coincided with the launch of a new Nexus (or pair of Nexus) smartphones to celebrate said launch but this year, Google is taking a different tack. The search giant just launched the official Android Nougat webpage, and with it bought confirmation of what we already expected: the LG V20 will be the first smartphone to launch with Android Nougat out-of-the-box.

LG's next flagship is set to be announced just after IFA at an event in San Francisco on September 6 and like we exclusively revealed a few weeks ago, it's set to follow the modular design of its G-series sibling, the LG G5, complete wit the second-screen feature of the LG V10. The move to decouple the Nexus smartphone range from the release of a new Android OS also poses an interesting question for Google's own smartphone strategy.

The Nougat update is expected to roll out to existing Nexus devices – such as the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Google Pixel C – today, but there have been very few leaks of either of the two new Nexus devices suggesting we're at least several weeks away from a possible launch.

What will the new Nexuses have to offer is the real question, and this remains unclear; with the possible advantage of having the latest Android OS no longer a factor, could Google opt to develop an experience that's more than just stock Android and exclusive to the Nexus range? Or will both smartphones have to compete on their hardware merits alone? Let us know your views in the comments below, stay tuned for a video overview and in-depth look and check out the links below for more on Android Nougat:

Android 7.0 Nougat update arrives: when will you get it?

Android N logo AA

Update, August 22: Android 7.0 has arrived. We've updated the intro to reflect this.

When Google dropped the Android N developer preview on March 9 it was also pretty open about its update timeline. Google identified five monthly developer previews in advance of the final release of Android 7.0 by the end of September 2016.

By getting the first developer preview out earlier this year, Google gave itself a couple of months head start on getting all of the necessary fine-tuning and bug squashing done with plenty of time to spare. But it also gave app developers and manufacturers an even earlier look at what to expect from Android 7.0 Nougat and additional time to get the update ball rolling.

Now Android 7.0 has finally landed in its final form, slightly ahead of schedule. That just leaves us with the question: when will it hit our devices? The answer to this will vary wildly depending on the OEM in question, with the current-gen Nexus devices getting it first.

Latest Android 7.0 news

As previous rumors suggested, Android 7.0 Nougat formally arrived on August 22nd. The latest version doesn't bring anything notably different from the previous beta, although you can expect that a ton of bugs were squashed in order to bring the most stable experience possible.

Besides the visible stuff though, Googlepreviously teased several tidbits of information about the Android 7.0 Nougat update during Google I/O. For starters, Android 7.0 will introduce seamless updates so future Android updates happen silently in the background via A/B partition switching. We're sure that we'll find a few other interesting new features and changes that lie under the surface as we dive deeper into Android 7.0 in the weeks to come.

In the meantime, be sure to check out our roundup of key features to get a better look at what's new:

Android 7.0 Nougat update: when will I get it?

Starting August 22nd, OTAs will begin for the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One). The Nexus 5 will not be joining in on the fun, though that's of little surprise considering Google's usual update patterns. The OTA could take weeks before reaching all devices, though if you don't want to wait, the factory images should go live soon and will be found here once they are ready.

Android 7.0 update: when will I get it?

Samsung Android 7.0 update

Samsung isn't exactly speedy when it comes to rolling out Android updates, and we sadly don't expect that to change significantly with the Samsung Android 7.0 update.

There was a five-month timeframe between the Android 6.0 launch on September 29, 2015 and the first U.S. update to Marshmallow with the Verizon Galaxy Note 5 on March 3, 2016. Galaxy owners could easily be waiting until late February or early March 2017 for the first Samsung Android 7.0 update.

Even then, it will likely only be the Galaxy Note 6 to get it first, with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge following a little later and the Note 5, S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ after them. With any luck, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Edge will both arrive in early 2017 running Android 7.0 out of the box.

Best case scenario: Five months after Android 7.0 launch (January/February 2017)

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge photos-26

LG Android 7.0 update

LG has been pretty good with its update speed for Marshmallow, with less than two months separating the release of Android 6.0 and the first LG handset to receive it (the Sprint LG G4 on December 21, 2015). In fact, LG was the first OEM to get a carrier-based Marshmallow update out after Google. The LG V10 eventually got the update internationally in early March 2016, after the LG G3 and LG G Stylo already had Marshmallow in the U.S..

If this is anything to go by, the first LG Android 7.0 update could well be to the LG G5 in December 2016. It's also worth noting that the upcoming LG V20 will be the first phone to feature Nougat out of the box, even ahead of the next-gen Nexus family!

Best case scenario: Less than two months after Android 7.0 release (November 2016)

LG G5 vs LG V10 quick look-10

Sony Android 7.0 update

As mentioned above, some Sony Xperia owners were treated to an Android N preview build just as they were last year with Android M. However, for those of you not interested in installing a non-final developer version, the Sony Android 7.0 update could arrive as early as the start of March 2017, around the same time as the first Galaxy devices.

This prediction is based on the Xperia Z5 series, Z4 Tablet and Xperia Z3+ all got the Marshmallow update five months after Google first pushed it out. Of course, it will most likely arrive first on the new Xperia X series rather than the Z5 series.

Best case scenario: Five months after Android 7.0 (February 2017), plus Android N developer previews

sony xperia X aa 3

Motorola Android 7.0 update

Moto owners will likely still get the Motorola Android 7.0 update a lot earlier than most, despite now being owned by Lenovo rather than Google. The Moto X Pure Edition got its first U.S. update to Marshmallow on December 7, 2015, but that was the unlocked version not slowed down by the addition of carrier bloatware and "optimization".

With this in mind, Moto owners could be the first non-Nexus owners to see Android 7.0 in 2016, even beating out the LG G5. However, we're yet to see how a Lenovo-owned Motorola handles software updates. At the very least we know the new near-stock Moto devices will run both the Android N and Android O releases.

Best case scenario: A little over a month after Android 7.0 arrives (October 2016)

Moto X Pure Edition-15

HTC Android 7.0 update

HTC also did pretty well with its first update to Marshmallow. The unlocked Developer Edition HTC One M9 and all variants of the HTC One A9 got the Marshmallow update in December 2015. The HTC 10 arrived in April running Android Marshmallow out of the box.

If HTC follows the same path this year, the first HTC Android 7.0 update should roll out to existing devices less than two months after Android 7.0 is made official. HTC's next flagship, presumably the HTC 11, should arrive with Android 7.0 at launch.

Best case scenario: Two months after Android 7.0 unveiling (October 2016)

htc one a9 review aa (28 of 29)

Huawei Android 7.0 update

Not including the Nexus 6P, the first Huawei device to get Android Marshmallow was not even an update, but straight out of the box. The Huawei Mate 8 arrived with Marshmallow on board in November, just weeks after Google had made the update available for Nexus devices.

Then the honor 7 Enhanced Edition arrived on December 14, 2015 with Android Marshmallow on board and the honor 5X and honor 7 followed with the Marshmallow update at the end of February.

Best case scenario: Mate 9 running Android 7.0 at launch (November 2016), updates in February 2017

Honor-7-vs-Huawei-Ascend-Mate-7-AA-(8-of-17)

Xiaomi Android 7.0 update

Xiaomi had a pretty bad case of the hiccups when it came to the Marshmallow update, so it may not be entirely representative to base assumptions about the Xiaomi Android 7.0 update based on its most recent update performance. Despite announcing Marshmallow was in the final stages of testing back in December 2015, it wasn't until early April that the Mi 4, Mi 3 and Mi Note finally got Android 6.0.

In the worst case scenario, Xiaomi suffers similar problems with Android 7.0 and users won't see it until six months after Google releases it. In the best case scenario, Xiaomi meets its timeline and has the update out in late December 2016 or early January 2017.

Best case scenario: Two or three months after Google (October 2016 – December 2017)

Xiaomi Mi 4S Nirave-1

Android One Android 7.0 update

Android One devices occupy a particular sweet spot when it comes to Android updates. Because they run stock Android, Google handles firmware updates, meaning the Android One Android 7.0 update will arrive at the same time as it does for Nexus devices with both OTA and flashable factory image options. OTAs will likely take at least a few weeks or more to reach all Android One devices getting the upgrade, though the factory images should be right around the corner.

When do you expect your manufacturer and carrier to get Android 7.0 into your hands?

Update: Android 7.0 Nougat will roll out to Nexus devices today

Android 7.0 Nougat page

Update: Google has announced that the consumer-ready version of Android 7.0 Nougat will begin rolling out to Nexus devices starting today. Google says the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One) will receive the over-the-air update over the next few weeks, while only a few Nexus owners will receive the OTA from today. Of course, you'll be able to manually update by flashing the system image starting today.

This final version of Android 7 won't bring many new changes that we didn't already see in the Developer Previews. It's basically a much more stable version of Developer Preview 5, which isn't a bad thing at all.

We will continue to update this post as we learn more details.

Android Nougat logoSee also: Android 7.0 Nougat features289

Original post: We've heard plenty of rumors that the final, consumer-ready version of Android 7.0 Nougat would launch at some point today, and it looks like we're getting closer to an official release. Google has just set live the official Android Nougat site, where you can see all the features that will launch with the next major version of Android.

As of right now there aren't any new details regarding the release, and we're still awaiting factory images and an official announcement from Google. We'll be sure to update this post as more details trickle in.
