Pokémon Go hits 100 million installs, makes $10 million a day

Pokemon Go AR Catch Screen

The inevitable has happened. Less than a week after posting 50 million installs on Android (and 75 million when combined with iOS), Pokémon Go has now surpassed 100 million installs worldwide. All in less than a month since it first debuted in Australia and New Zealand on July 6. What's even better news for its developer Niantic, is the fact that the game is raking in $10 million every single day.

With that in mind, it's a little surprising to see App Annie reporting that Pokémon Go's massive financial success and enviable engagement rate hasn't come at the expense of other games and apps. While the daily revenue figures for games not including Pokémon Go did drop in the first week of the game's release, revenues have essentially returned to what they were before the launch of Pokémon Go.

Pokémon GO user spendApp Annie

Furthermore, App Annie notes it has "not noticed any meaningful declines in daily revenue for top-grossing games like Mobile Strike, Clash of Clans or Candy Crush Saga". The reason for this, according to the app market researcher, is that "the majority of game revenue comes from a small minority of users and these players are unlikely to be deeply engaged across a multitude of top-grossing games."

Considering the engagement rates of other popular apps like Facebook, Tinder and Snapchat have not dropped, Pokémon Go has been credited with "successfully acquiring a sizable chunk of previously "non-mobile time"."

But besides just convincing mobile users to spend even more time on their smartphones than they already did, Pokémon Go has also been a watershed moment for AR generally and AR gaming in particular, as well as opening up whole new revenue streams for existing apps and real-world businesses.

How much time do you spend on Pokémon Go? Any idea how much money you've spent?

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to arrive in India on August 11

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016
If you're a huge fan of Samsung's Galaxy Note series in India and have been used to impatiently waiting for the flagship to arrive in the Indian market a month or so after its official announcement, the great news is that you won't have to do that with the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung has confirmed that it will launch their latest flagship in the Indian market on August 11, which means that the new device will hit store shelves near you a week or so after it is launched today.

Today, all eyes will be on Samsung's Galaxy Note Unpacked event where the company will take the wraps off the Galaxy Note 7, possibly accompanied by the launch of the next-gen Gear VR and the Gear S3 smartwatch.

For the uninitiated, the series of leaks over the past few weeks has given us some idea of what we can expect from the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung's new phablet is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, and 4 GB of RAM. You can also expect a 12 MP f/1.7 camera with OIS and 4K video, along with 5 MP front-facing camera, a 3,500 mAh battery, along with the much rumored iris scanner.

The Galaxy Note 7 opens for pre-orders in Korea immediately after it is unveiled and will arrive in the European markets on August 16. Samsung has already begun accepting pre-registrations for the upcoming phablet on its Indian site. If you may recall, Samsung had priced the Galaxy Note 5 well in comparison to the Galaxy Note 4, but this time, we're afraid that the Edge screen and new features such as the iris scanner, could put the phablet out of reach for many budget conscious consumers in India.

Rumors suggest that Samsung will price the Galaxy Note 7 at EUR 849 (about Rs. 63,000), but we'll be able to confirm that as soon as more details emerge after it is unveiled today as well as over the coming days.

Samsung's Galaxy Note Unpacked event kicks off at 11:00 a.m. EDT (8:30 p.m. IST) in New York City on Aug. 2, 2016, followed by Rio de Janeiro at noon, and London at 4:00 p.m. If you can't be at any of these places, don't worry because Samsung plans to globally webcast the launch event. The Unpacked event will be screened with a 360-degree view option for the first time and you can also watch the unveiling using the Gear VR headset.

Of course, we'll be there to cover the launch of the Galaxy Note 7 in New York City. So stay tuned as we bring you all the details as they are unveiled.

Are you excited about the Galaxy Note 7 arriving in India in a little more than a week from now? Hit the comments below to let us know!

Panasonic Eluga Arc2 now available in India

panasonic-eluga-arc-2

Panasonic hasn't been able to make the kind of impact that Xiaomi or Motorola have in the budget-conscious Indian smartphone market, but you can't accuse the company of not trying. The good response received from Indian consumers for the Eluga Arc, launched in April this year, has encouraged Panasonic to now come out with its metallic version, the Eluga Arc2, along with some improvements in features and specs.

Panasonic has upped the display size from 4.7-inch to a 5-inch one when compared to its predecessor, but it is still an IPS LCD screen, that comes with On-Cell Touch technology and the Outdoor-Pro Display feature for up to 500nit brightness, to improve outdoor readability. The Eluga Arc2 is powered by a 1.3GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor supported by 3GB RAM, and 32GB of on-board storage, which is further expandable to 128GB via a micro SD card. Other features include an 8MP rear camera with a LED flash, along with a 5MP front-facing shooter and a 2,450mAh battery, and the device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

While the Eluga Arc2 does miss the mark when it comes to camera and processing performance, it makes up for that with its design and metallic body. Weighing just 147 grams, the handset sports a 7.6mm thick metal frame made of aircraft grade aluminum alloy using CNC technology. Its front and back comes with 2.5D curved Asahi Dragontrail glass finishing, which is scratch resistant. Panasonic claims that the Eluga Arc2's metallic body allows the smartphone to withstand everyday wear and tear.

Panasonic had launched the Eluga Arc at Rs 12,490 (~$187) and is now offering its upgraded iteration at a slightly more affordable Rs 12,290 (~$184) for both the Gold and Rose Gold color options, bundled with a protective screen guard. If you're looking for a great-looking smartphone that won't break the bank, but can live with some sacrifices in the camera and processing departments, then the Eluga Arc2 may be a great option for you.

The Eluga Arc2 will be available on all offline retail channels, but amidst stiff competition, the company  still has a lot of work to do if it hopes to win over Android users in the Indian market in a big way. Interestingly, during the press briefing for the Eluga Arc2, Panasonic said that it plans to launch "something unique" in the next six to nine months without dropping any hints. It might be worth the wait though, and we'll be keeping an eye out on that one for you.

Let us know in the comments section below if you think the Eluga Arc2 could be the right smartphone for you!

200 million alleged Yahoo accounts are up for sale on the dark web

yahoo

If you're one of the few who refuse to move on to Gmail or Outlook but have stuck with Yahoo, your account may be on sale for a handsome sum right now. A notorious hacker named "Peace" has dumped 200 million alleged Yahoo accounts on the dark web, and Yahoo isn't really forthcoming about the incident.

"Peace_of_mind" or "Peace" sells private data on the dark web and boasts a 100% satisfaction rating. Peace is a known hacker that previously sold millions of LinkedIn, MySpace, Tumblr, and Twitter accounts among others, and it seems as though Yahoo will be their next target.

On Monday, Peace added 200 million Yahoo accounts to their store, selling them for 3 bitcoins – approximately $1,860. According to the hacker, these accounts are most likely from 2012.

Yahoo is aware of the data leak but has neither confirmed or denied that these alleged Yahoo accounts are in fact, Yahoo accounts.

We are committed to protecting the security of our users' information and we take any such claim very seriously. Our security team is working to determine the facts. Yahoo works hard to keep our users safe, and we always encourage our users to create strong passwords, or give up passwords altogether by using Yahoo Account Key, and use different passwords for different platforms.

What's puzzling is that most companies would provide password resets to users who may or may not have been affected by any sort of security breach – even if they can't validate the claim. Although there are no official words on whether these leaked accounts are authentic, Motherboard's investigation could indicate that some of them are indeed real Yahoo accounts.

According to Motherboard, they received around 5,000 records before Peace's most recent listing went public, and it was a mixed bag: some were active Yahoo accounts and some were discontinued or disabled. Many of the leaked accounts also contain usernames, hashed passwords, dates of birth, and even back-up email addresses. It's hard to say just how many users this leak will affect.

No one knows how this Russian hacker and their team obtain masses of private data, but until Yahoo officially responds to this purported security breach, if you have an active Yahoo account, it's probably wise to go ahead and change your personal details.

Do you have an active Yahoo account? How do you protect your personal information online? Let us know in the comments below!

Lenovo Vibe K5 Note vs the competition

lenovo vibe k5 note comparison

Lenovo Vibe K5 Note

The Lenovo Vibe K5 Note has finally hit Indian shores, and succeeds the Vibe K4 Note that launched at the start of this year. The former brings in a few improvements over the latter, including a more powerful processor, an additional gig of RAM, enhanced expandable storage capabilities, bumped up front camera resolution, and an upgrade in build quality and design, with the Vibe K5 Note featuring a full metal unibody construction.

As good as the Vibe K5 Note may seem on paper, there is no shortage of great, high quality but affordable smartphones in the Indian market, and the K5 Note does come up against some stiff competition. With the device being available from August 4, and to help you make your choice easier, we take a quick by-the-numbers look at the Lenovo Vibe K5 Note vs the competition!

With their respective price points in mind, we will be pitting the Vibe K5 Note against the Moto G4 Plus and the Xiaomi Mi Max, and also include its predecessor, to see if it proves to be a worthy upgrade.

Lenovo-K4-Note-review-8

Lenovo Vibe K4 Note

First, let's dig right into the CPU performance of these four smartphones. The Vibe K5 Note clearly leads in this department as the octa-core MediaTek Helio P10, clocked at 1.8 GHz, packs more of a punch than any of the processors powering the other three. This means that apart from general day to day tasks, performing more processor-intensive activities, such as high resolution video streaming and gaming, should be far better on the Vibe K5 Note. The Xiaomi Mi Max is no slouch either, and some may actually prefer the reliability that is available with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 series processor.

The Vibe K4 Note also falls behind when it comes to on-board storage, with 16 GB being the only option available, with 3 GB of RAM. The Moto G4 Plus is available in 16 GB or 32 GB iterations, which dictates whether you will get 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM. The Vibe K5 Note will come with 32 GB of on-board storage, regardless of whether you opt for the 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM version. The Mi Max is available with 128 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM, but that is far more expensive, so for the purposes of this comparison, we will be looking at the 32 GB iteration with 3 GB of RAM. all of the devices come with expandable storage via microSD, up to an additional 256 GB.

Moto G4 Plus -9

Motorola Moto G4 Plus

When it comes to the camera, Lenovo has kept selfie lovers in mind while building the Vibe K5 Note by upgrading the resolution of its front-facing shooter to 8 MP, compared to the 5 MP unit found with its predecessor. It still shares the same 13 MP ISOCELL camera as the Vibe K4 Note though. Both the Mi Max and the Moto G4 Plus feature a 16 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera.

Lenovo has also upped the battery size in the Vibe K5 Note to 3,500mAh, but it still fails to come close to the Xiaomi Mi Max, which draws juice from a massive 4,850mAh battery. The Vibe K4 Note and Moto G4 Plus come with smaller 3,300mAh and 3,000mAh batteries respectively.

Xiaomi Mi Max-1

Xiaomi Mi Max

All four smartphones come with IPS LCD displays with a Full HD resolution, but while the Moto G4 Plus, K4 Note, and K5 Note feature 5.5-inch screens, the Mi Max has bumped up the display size to massive 6.44-inches. As such, while the first three smartphones offer similar handling experiences, the huge Mi Max will certainly take some getting used to, and one-handed use is practically out of the question with this device.

What certainly tips the scales in favor of the K4 Note and K5 Note is the support for Lenovo's TheatreMax technology, bundled with the ANT VR headset, for converting any games and videos into virtual reality (VR). The K5 Note will also come with a controller, and you're looking for a more serious gaming controller, Lenovo has thrown in a Bluetooth controller from Amkette along with the Vibe K5 Note. However, these controllers will also work with the K4 Note.

Rs 14,999 (32 GB, 3 GB RAM)
Rs 19,999 (128 GB, 4 GB RAM)

Despite introducing quite a few improvements in its upgraded iteration, Lenovo has priced the 3GB RAM version of the Vibe K5 Note at Rs 11,999 (~$180), while the 4GB RAM version will sell for Rs 13,499 (~$202). Both the 32 GB and 3 GB versions of the Moto G4 Plus and Xiaomi Mi Max are priced at Rs 14,999 (~$225), while the 128 GB and 4 GB version of the Mi Max will set you back Rs 19,999 (~$300). The Vibe K4 Note is unsurprisingly the cheapest of the lot, priced at Rs 10,999 (~$165), with a wooden back edition available for Rs 11,499 (~$172).

So there you have it for this quick look at the Lenovo Vibe K5 Note vs the competition. The K5 Note does seem to offer more than other similarly-priced, or slightly more expensive smartphones, and if you are looking to get into the VR game, the K5 Note is certainly going to be the best option. If price is a concern, the K4 Note and the 3 GB iteration of the K5 Note are the cheapest of the lot, but if a massive display is what you are in the market for, the Xiaomi Mi Max is a great choice.

Download these beautiful Nexus 2016 wallpapers

imageAndroid Police

Google is good at a lot of things – including making beautiful wallpapers. Nexus wallpapers are known for their minimalist beauty, and judging by some of the leaked Nexus 2016 wallpapers, this year will be no exception.

We don't know a whole lot about the upcoming Nexus phones: codenamed "Sailfish," the alleged 5 inch FHD smartphone will be made by HTC, sporting a quad-core chipset and a 12-megapixel rear camera. Rumor has it Google will also unveil a bigger Nexus phone – just like last year – codenamed "Marlin" with the same chipset and camera but a bigger 3,450mAh battery.

Although Google's upcoming Nexus phones have been very camera-shy, what seems like the wallpapers from Google's upcoming devices have been leaked online. Here are the 15 gorgeous wallpapers that will be on the upcoming Nexus phones:

Some look pretty familiar: abstract and minimalist design with popping colors. Some, on the other hand, look quite refreshing: surreal wildlife captured from a bird's eye view. Perhaps they have something to do with the marine-life-inspired codenames for the upcoming Nexus phones.

Along with the Nexus Launcher that leaked earlier, Google is said to bring some changes to the wallpaper department. Not only will the upcoming live wallpapers be filled with the usual animations, but they will also be functional.

Though we don't quite know what "functional" may entail, perhaps they will incorporate elements from already-existing third-party functional wallpapers. For instance, they could feature built-in sticky notes, picture frames, weather, or news updates.
