OnePlus 3 in Soft Gold arriving in Canada, Hong Kong, and the EU

oneplus 3 soft gold 2

OnePlus' new flagship is swiftly becoming a major player in the Android landscape, but many fans have been a bit underwhelmed with only color option: Graphite. Last week, we reported that the OnePlus 3 could now be purchased in a fancy Soft Gold in the US, but the company didn't wait too long to start expanding this limited edition variant to more parts of the world.

Specifically, consumers in the Canada, Hong Kong, and the European Union can now grab this golden, metal-clad smartphone from the company's website. OnePlus's take on gold is a sophisticated, toned-down shade of the color with suave and silky finish. The front the phone has also been swapped to white for a luxurious match.

Do be aware that the Soft Gold variant is in limited quantities, so you may want to jump on it as soon as you can. Although this device looks ritzier than Graphite, the pricing of the Soft Gold variant is the same at $399. Be sure to check out our OnePlus 3 Review for the full scoop about what this baby has beneath that shiny exterior.

Have you been waiting for the Soft Gold variant to drop before purchasing the OnePlus 3? Perhaps you're an early adopter who grabbed Graphite early and are now regretting your decision, or maybe you think gold is a bit too showy. Either way, let us know your take on this variant in the comments below!

Leaked 2016 Nexus Launcher ditches app drawer icon, adds “G” tab

nexus launcher

2016's Nexus smartphones are just around the corner, and if these sources are to be believed, then we might have just gotten our first glimpse at the launcher that we'll be seeing on devices like Marlin and Sailfish.

It's worth emphasizing that these are only rumors at the time. Although Android Police is reporting that they are receiving this information from reliable sources, it's always possible that design changes will be coming down the pipeline that could seriously alter the appearance of this launcher. Without further ado, here's what we're looking at.

nexus launcher app drawer

Right off the bat, we're noticing that the launcher has completely ditched the app drawer icon. However, this doesn't mean that the app drawer is completely dead. Its functionality can still be accessed by sliding up an arrow placed above the static icons riding along the bottom of the home screen.

HTC-Logo-3 (1)See also: Alleged specs surface for HTC Nexus "Marlin"57

If this mechanic seems suspiciously familiar, you might be thinking of the similar app drawer that launched on the HTC G1 all the way back in 2008. The slide-up app drawer remained an Android standard all the way up through Eclaire until it was ditched in favor of the app drawer icon when Froyo came along. Could it be coming back?

android 1.0

The 'frosted glass' drag-up app drawer isn't the only thing new here. Also prominent is the "G" tab in the upper-left corner of the screen. Although this tab looks made for dragging, sliding this UI element does absolutely nothing on the current version of this launcher. Tapping it, however, initiates the familiar Google search bar that currently rides across Google Now launchers.

nexus launcher g button tab

Some customization freaks might be a bit perturbed by the calendar widget that now hovers in the upper-left. According to reports, it cannot be moved or changed, at least in this leaked version of the launcher.

What are your thoughts regarding this new "Nexus Launcher" that may be coming down the line? Something that you'd be interested in using, or do you see missteps in design? Let us know in the comments below!

Chrome OS Beta getting access to the Google Play Store today

Google Play Chromebook

This post originally appeared on our sister site TabTimes.com

Have you been waiting for your Chromebook to get Google Play Store Access? Official support for Android apps won't be coming until later this year, but ASUS Chromebook Flip, Chromebook Pixel (2015) and Acer Chromebook R11 owners have been testing it on the developer channel. Today, those using Chrome OS Beta can also get in on the action!

Chrome OS Beta is getting updated to version 53 (53.0.2785.36, to be exact), bringing over a million Android apps to these three Chromebooks. But don't go crazy just yet. First, you need to learn a bit about activating the Google Play Store, which you can learn how to do by following TabTimes' step-by-step tutorial.

Furthermore, Google is quick to remind us this is not a finished product. It is still considered to be in its developer preview stages and will likely come with some bugs.

The Play store on Chromebooks is still in Developer Preview and some features may not work as intended.

It's also important to note that not all Android apps in the Play Store will run on Chrome OS, and even in the case of the apps that do run, there's a chance that you will run into various issues. This is new territory for most app developers, so expect the situation to improve over the next months.

Chrome OS Beta is still an unstable channel, but it is more reliable than the developer channel. More importantly, this serves as a signal that the feature is closer to a general release.

Have you been using Android apps on Chrome OS? Hit the comments to let us know what you think of the experience!

New York law aims to protect children from sex offenders using Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go Splash screen 2

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an order this week to make it illegal for registered sex offenders on parole to use Pokemon Go. The resulting change in parole restrictions will make any attempts to catch 'em all by registered sex offenders a no-go, and violators may be returned to prison after a court hearing.

The concern is that sex criminals might use the game's lure system to stalk potential victims near PokeStops. Although muggings and other crimes have been associated with the game's mechanics over the past few weeks, there has not yet been a reported instance of it being used for sex crimes.

What's more is that the Division of Criminal Justice Services is providing up-to-date information about the approx. 3,000 sex offenders currently on parole in New York to Niantic. The Division is asking the game development company to cooperate with them in identifying Pokemon Go playing sex criminals.

The directive applies to Level 1, 2, and 3 sex offenders, but it may be extended to a wider group of low level offenders numbering about 5,000. Authorities will be attempting to work with Apple and Google as well to identify active Pokemon Go accounts in the hands of these paroled individuals.

Since New York's Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predator's act requires people in the sex offender registry an up to date list of all email accounts, screen names, and internet identities, these could be used to tie violators to their Pokemon Go accounts.

These actions will provide safeguards for the players of these augmented reality games and help take one more tool away from those seeking to do harm to our children.

"Protecting New York's children is priority number one and, as technology evolves, we must ensure these advances don't become new avenues for dangerous predators to prey on new victims," said Cuomo. "These actions will provide safeguards for the players of these augmented reality games and help take one more tool away from those seeking to do harm to our children."

While primarily affecting Pokemon Go, this directive has a more general prohibition that includes a wide swath of online gaming. People who are on parole and on the sex offender registry are banned from "downloading, accessing, or otherwise engaging in any internet-enabled gaming activities."

It should be noted that once these people have served the full term of their parole, these restrictions will no longer apply to them.

What are your thoughts regarding New York's ban on Pokemon Go for sexual predators? Let us know your take in the comments below.

Uber China to merge with rival Didi Chuxing

Uber has met it's match in China. The company has announced that Uber China will soon be sold off to local ride-sharing rival Didi Chuxing. The news of the looming merger comes just days after China's Ministry of Transportation passed federal regulation legalizing ride-sharing networks.

Uber China will keep its name, but the company will merge into the much larger Didi Chuxing once this deal goes through. Didi Chuxing will give Uber a 5.89 percent stake in the merged entity, meaning Uber will receive about 17.7 percent in preferred equity interest. This is about a $7 billion share of Didi Chuxing's estimated $35 billion value after the merger.

Uber founder Travis Kalanick and Didi Chuxing founder Cheng Wei will join the boards of each other's companies. Didi Chuxing also plans to bring on Uber China's human capital for expertise in tech and management.

"This agreement with Uber will set the mobile transportation industry on a healthier, more sustainable path of growth at a higher level," Wei said.

Though Uber China now serves about 150 million riders each month, the venture has cost Uber $2 billion over the last two years. Didi Chuxing, which served 1.43 billion riders last year, has had a lot to do with that, but China's homegrown ride-sharing network has been struggling to turn a profit too.

"Uber and Didi Chuxing are investing billions of dollars in China and both companies have yet to turn a profit there," Kalanick said in a blogpost. "Getting to profitability is the only way to build a sustainable business that can best serve Chinese riders, drivers and cities over the long term."

Uber and Didi Chuxing are investing billions of dollars in China and both companies have yet to turn a profit there.

Earlier this year, Apple, an assumed Uber rival, invested $1 billion in Didi Chuxing. With Apple rumored to be working on a driverless car network called Project Titan, there has been speculation that the company will rely on a ridesharing network to manage its autonomous vehicles. Regardless of whether or not Apple plans to rival Uber, it's now connected to the company through Didi Chuxing.

Android’s August 2016 security update is headed to Nexus devices

android 6.0 marshmallowAre you a Nexus owner who is also a fan of not having your identity stolen? Well, good news, because this month's Android security update is already available for your device. Or, at least… part of it is.

That's right. This month's update is looking a lot like last month's in that it has been split into two parts. The first security patch which  includes broad-level software fixes has been made available today, but a second patch is slated to arrive this Friday. The second patch is expected to have updates related to drivers and Qualcomm components.

If you wait around through the end of the week, then these updates will arrive on your device in due time. However, if you'd like to get an early jump on them, you can grab the Factory Images right over here, and get a look at the OTA images here. The full details on what exactly this update entails can be found on the Android Security Bulletin.

This month's security update fixes a variety of vulnerabilities, but it appears that the Android dev team is getting to them before any known exploits pertaining to them have made it into the Android ecosystem. If you're a non-Nexus user, well, you'll have to rely on your phone's manufacturer and carrier to get these security updates rolled out to your device. However, as a recent security expert pointed out, Samsung in particular is doing a good job keeping up with Nexus in this regard. Owners of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge devices probably won't have to wait very long.
