CES 2017: Everything announced and what’s still to come

We went hands on with the BlackBerry Mercury, new LG mid-rangers and the Honor 6X. The Snapdragon 835 is official, Lenovo has revealed new devices including an Amazon Echo clone, Qualcomm leaked the Asus Zenfone AR, new Xperia rumors persist, there's new Chromebooks from Acer and Asus, HTC has denied rumors of a HTC Vive 2, Samsung has new Galaxy A series phones, and LG has AI robots!

The Consumer Electronics Show (aka CES) is one of the largest technology trade shows in the world. Taking place every January in Las Vegas, Nevada, CES is chock-full of interesting gadgets, toys, drones, and much more. Android Authority and our host of sister sites will, as always, be on deck for CES 2017, bringing you in-depth coverage of all the latest and greatest gadget announcements.

When is CES 2017?

What better way to kick off a new year than with a bunch of new electronics announcements to drool over? CES 2017 takes place between January 5-8. Early previews and major device announcements typically happen on the two press days before the show officially starts, so stay tuned from January 3 onwards.

You can see the full CES 2017 schedule here.

What to expect from CES 2017

We won't try to give you a full list of press conferences, device announcements and other related news, but we can give you a rough idea of what to expect from CES 2017.

This year, we'll have not only the Android Authority team on the show floor, but we'll also be covering all the latest VR, tablet, laptop, audio drones, and electric news for our sister sites. If you haven't already checked them out, feel free to do so.

CES 2017 announcements

Compared to massive mobile shows like MWC in Barcelona and IFA in Berlin, CES doesn't have quite as many mobile announcements from the major players but there's always enough to keep us coming back. Fortunately, there are always a few curve balls and surprise device announcements to keep things interesting.

Sony

Sony has announced its CES press conference will begin at 5:00 pm PST on January 4 and it will livestream the coverage to its Ustream channel. Sony is expected to unveil a pair of new OLED TVs at the show and there have even been some rumors of new Xperia phones powered by the Snapdragon 820. With Android Wear 2.0 on the horizon (we know, we know), a new smartwatch might also be in order.

HTC

HTC showed off the HTC Vive at CES 2016, and recent rumors indicated that the company could reveal a fully wireless follow-up at CES. Unfortunately for VR fans, the company has since debunked that rumor. However, an HTC Vive add-on was recently released in China which cuts the Vive's cords, but an HTC spokesperson has confirmed that any Vive announcements at CES would be related to the current edition of the headset only.

LG

LG introduced five new smartphones in December that we've now seen at CES. The most interesting of the bunch is the LG Stylus 3, featuring a 5.7-inch 720p display, MediaTek's MT6750 processor, and 3 GB of RAM. The other four devices are mid-range K series devices. Hit the links for hands-ons.

The Korean giant is also jumping on the AI bandwagon with "advanced robot technologies". Think AI robot assistants that help you shop, work, or just clean up the house. Exciting stuff! As usual, LG will also have tons of televisions – including an ultra-wide Chromecast-enabled monitor – and other consumer electronics to demo, as well as audio gear and possibly other weird gadgets like 2015's Rolly Keyboard.

Samsung

Samsung will likely hold the Galaxy S8 launch either at MWC 2017 in March or at a standalone event a little while after. But there will still be some mobile news from Samsung at CES 2017: Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy A (2017) series, so it's likely that the company will use CES to give the tech press demos of the new devices.

In January 2016, Samsung made Samsung Pay and Gear smartwatch announcements at CES and dropped several new laptops and Chromebooks, so we may see similar announcements this year. There will also be the usual range of Smart TVs (with Chromecast support), notebooks, smart appliances, audio and other electronics to keep an eye out for – we already know about the fancy 32-bit H7 Wireless Speaker and some bizarre experimental smart skincare products.

Asus

Asus will be revealing the new Zenfone AR at CES, according to a pre-emptive blog post from none other than Qualcomm. The post not only confirms the existence of the previously rumored device, but it also shares some key specs, including the presence of the Snapdragon 821 chipset, a significant upgrade from the Snapdragon 652 Tango Edition found in the original Tango phone, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro. According to the blog post, the Zenfone AR will support Google's Daydream VR platform.

The Zenfone 3 Zoom is also expected to make an appearance and Asus has also tweeted to reveal that a device running the next-gen Snapdragon 835 chipset will also be unveiled at CES which will also feature a dual camera setup. A couple of new laptops, more mini PCs and a new Chromebook or two may also be on the cards: the first of which is the Chromebook Flip 2, priced at $499.

Lenovo and Motorola

Lenovo has unveiled an Amazon Echo-looking speaker called Smart Assistant already and has also revealed a new series of gaming laptops called Legion. Updates to its ThinkPad series devices include the Thinkpad X1 Carbon notebook, ThinkPad X1 Yoga convertible, ThinkPad X1 tablet and Miix 720 2-in-1.

As expected, the recently-leaked Moto X (2017) will not be at CES, so we'll have to wait until MWC in Barcelona to see it in the flesh.

Huawei

At CES 2016, Huawei delivered women's versions of the Huawei Watch, the new MediaPad, the Mate 8 and a gold variant of the Nexus 6P. With the MediaPad M3 already out, the Mate 9 announcement recently behind us and no rumors about the Huawei Watch 2 (other than that it might switch to Tizen), we can't say for sure what Huawei has planned for the new year. Huawei has been teasing taking your smartphone experience "to the next level" and we're also expecting a Mate 9 announcement for the U.S. market.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, will present the Huawei CES keynote on Thursday, January 5. According to Huawei, through Yu's speech attendees will learn about "Huawei's plans for the future of mobile – one that integrates the latest in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and connected technologies," but the company didn't mention specifics. Yu has spoken previously about Huawei's vision for an AI-powered "Superphone" though.

Honor

Huawei sub-brand Honor has unveiled the Honor 6X for the U.S. and European markets. The successor to the massively popular Honor 5X, the 6X will be priced at $249/€249 with pre-orders going live January 4 and general sales on January 10. Huawei also promised an "epic" phone launch at CES which we're sincerely hoping has something to do with the new Honor Magic.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi has officially confirmed it will be at CES for the first time ever, and will have a global product release to announce. Considering the vast array of products Xiaomi makes, there's no guaranteeing this announcement will be of a smartphone or even a mobile device of any description. Either way, we'll be the first to tell you what it is, but you can also watch the livestream here.

Qualcomm

As expected, Qualcomm has revealed full details on its new Snapdragon 835 chipset (except the specifics of its secretive new custom CPU design). Hit the link for a full breakdown of the specs involved.

ZTE

ZTE will be announcing the Blade V8, a dual camera-equipped device with a 13 MP front-facing camera and a 13 MP/2 MP combo on the back. The secondary 2 MP sensor will reportedly capture depth information. Previous Blade handsets never made it to U.S. shores, so we'll have to wait and see if the Blade V8 is set to buck that trend.

Acer

Acer dropped a new Chromebook – the ultra-durable Chromebook 11 N7 – with U.S. MIL-STD 810G military standard for toughness. Acer also finally revealed the price for its curved screen gaming laptop, the Predator 21X we first saw at IFA 2016. If you want to pick one up you'll only need $8,999. For the base model. Yes, you read that right.

LeEco

LeEco has already announced two new smart bicycles at CES 2017. LeEco hasn't made any other announcements so far but the Batmobile-like concept car from Faraday Future, which is backed by LeEco, is set to be shown at the trade show.

TCL (BlackBerry)

TCL Communications, the company that recently acquired the branding rights to BlackBerry's name, has given us a sneak peek at the new BlackBerry Mercury but it's important to note that the company quickly assured us that "Mercury" is a name invented by the internet. No specs were shared and we aren't allowed to disclose certain information but we'll have more to share at MWC 2017.

Other stuff worth checking out

Amazon Alexa has been the star of the show so far, with more products being announced with Alexa integration than I think anyone was expecting. From obvious fare like Lenovo's Smart Assistant speaker to TVs, refrigerators, lamps, vacuum cleaner bots and more. Amazon has also announced its own line of Amazon Fire TV 4K televisions to compete directly with the likes of Android TV and Roku.

Swarovski has announced its own Android Wear watch – yes, you read that right. But the move isn't as left-field as it might first sound. If you remember the Samsung Gear S then you'll know what to expect: Swarovski worked on that design with Samsung as well as with Huawei on the Jewel version of the Huawei Watch for women.

Casio announced it will launch a GPS-equipped Casio WSDF20 in April running Android Wear 2.0. A follow up to last year's interesting Casio WSDF10, the successor features the same three physical buttons on the right hand side and military grade impact resisatnce. The WSDF20 will also be water-resistant to 50 meters.

Garmin unveiled three new fēnix 5 multisport watches at CES, aimed at serious athletes with high demands from their fitness wearable. You'll have to pay a pretty penny for the new series – from $599.99 to $699.99 – but these are more than just your average smartwatch.

Synaptics announced a multi-factor biometric fusion engine. It's a new all-in-one security solution that combines Synaptics' new optical fingerprint sensor (the one that works under glass) with facial recognition. The new fusion engine will allow you to unlock your phone with your face when your fingerprints are covered by gloves, for example.

The Dish AirTV Player is a 4K Android TV set-top box. It costs $129.99 when sold with an OTA adapter (so you can watch regular TV as well) or just $99.99 for the streaming media player alone. It's available now.

The known unknowns

There's going to be more drones that you can shake a stick at, but we'll cover all the best of them on Charged, where you can also swing by if you want to stay on top of all the latest innovations from the world of electric vehicles and other forms of futuristic transportation. If we know one thing about CES, it's that automotive often steals the show.

There will also be a huge amount of virtual reality news we'll detail over at VR Source, while all the best audio announcements at CES 2017 will be covered on Sound Guys. If tablets, laptops, ultrabooks and other non-smartphone tech is more your game, then Tab Times will have you covered from the first press conference until they kick us out almost a week later.

We can't wait for CES 2017 and we hope you'll join us for the ride.
