Samsung has delivered an update to its Gear S2 smartwatch which includes a number of Gear S3 features. The update is rolling out as of today (December 5) and coincides with an unrelated offer on refurbished Gear S2 models, now available for $109.99.
The update brings the Gear S3's watch faces, downloadable via the apps store, as well as increasing the number of functions the rotating bezel can be used for.
Gear S2 owners can now accept or reject calls using the bezel as well as dismiss alarms, timers and alerts. What's more, the Gear S2 now supports a handwriting mode, which converts characters drawn onto the screen in English, Korean or Chinese, into typed characters – or you can dictate messages with a voice record feature.
Other updated Gear S2 features include:
Activity tracking: S Health now includes (what appears to be) the same features as were added to the Gear Fit2, detailed here, including auto-pause and better activity recognition.
Widget support: Added support for "third-party widgets from popular apps like Uber, Yelp and USA Today," and improvements to others. (For example, the Weather widget now includes a City Navigator function to allow users to monitor multiple cities' conditions.)
Safety and security: A new location tracking feature allows users to send their location in an emergency to predefined contacts.
Meanwhile, the refurbished Gear S2 offer comes from www.dailysteals.com and includes the smartwatch in dark grey plus a USB cable and charger. Note that it will cost you to extend the 60-day included warranty up to one or two years.
For comparison, the Gear S2 can be purchased new on Amazon.com for $249.99.
