Google Translate gets a new “Translate Quick Actions” widget with Material You design

After years of neglect, home screen widgets finally received a big facelift in Android 12. The new widgets follow Material You guidelines and are more useful, responsive, and interactive. Many popular Google apps such as Gmail, YouTube Music, Google Drive, and Maps have already received refreshed home screen widgets. Now one more Google app is getting a widget refresh: Google Translate.

When the Google Translate app received its big Material You redesign late last year, it didn’t bring any update to the home screen widget. But that’s finally changing as Google has started rolling out a revamped Google Translate widget.

The previous widget was quite basic in nature and only offered a quick 1×1 shortcut that you can link to open either the text, camera, conversation, or write mode activity. The new Translate Quick Actions widget is more capable and useful, offering shortcuts to voice translation, conversation, transcribe, and camera mode.

The top row displays the currently set language pairing, while a clipboard shortcut appears on the right side. The number of shortcuts changes dynamically as you resize the widget; at max, you can display up to four quick actions. On devices running Android 12, the widget fully supports Dynamic Color theming and takes on the dominant color of your wallpaper.

The new Translate Quick Actions widget hasn’t rolled out widely. It wasn’t available on my Android 12 phone with Google Translate v6.35. Google’s tweet doesn’t reveal much about exact availability. In any case, it shouldn’t be too long before the new widget starts rolling out to everyone.

Saved Translations widget

Interestingly, Google Translate is also working on a “Saved Translations” widget (h/t Mishaal Rahmaan), though it hasn’t rolled out to users yet.

Huawei Band 7 launches in China with a 1.47-inch AMOLED display

At Huawei’s recent event, the firm announced its latest entry in its foldable phone lineup the Mate Xs 2. During the event, the company also announced two new wearables, the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro and the Huawei Band 7. There’s a lot to unpack about the latter, so let’s get started.

The Huawei Band originally made its debut in 2016, offering consumers an affordable fitness tracking solution. Over the years, the Band line has slowly evolved, adding notable features, while still maintaining a reasonable price point. The Band 7 is no exception, offering more than its predecessor, in an even more svelte package.

HUAWEI BAND 7

The Huawei Band 7 features a 1.47-inch AMOLED display and weighs in at just under 16g. The overall package is quite compact, measuring 44.35mm x 26mm, and being only 9.9mm thick. This is 1mm thinner than the previous model. When it comes to aesthetics, there are four different colors and over 8000 watch faces to choose from. As far as battery life goes, you’re looking at about two weeks or around ten days under heavy use. Luckily, if you ever find yourself running out of battery, a quick five-minute charge will yield you two days of battery life.

Download: MIUI Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices [Update: April 27 PRE builds]

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 13 – is finally here. The latest iteration of MIUI has been unveiled at the Xiaomi 12 launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 12/12.5, MIUI 13 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and a handful of new features. We have already extracted the new live wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the MIUI 13 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too.

The Best Xiaomi Phones to Buy

The beta MIUI 12.5/13 builds listed below are based on either Android 11 or Android 12, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 13 stable releases, you can find those here.

Download MIUI Closed Beta

You can download the latest beta of MIUI 12.5/13 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

Google now lets you request removal of more personally identifiable infromation from Search

Google has offered users an option to request the removal of personally identifiable information from Search for many years. Until now, this option let users request Google to remove personally identifiable information in cases of doxxing or financial fraud. But Google is now updating its policy to include other sensitive information, like personal contact information and confidential log-in credentials.

In a blog post on the matter, Google says that as part of this new policy expansion, users “can now request removals of additional types of information when they find it in Search results, including personal contact information like a phone number, email address, or physical address. The policy also allows for the removal of additional information that may pose a risk for identity theft, such as confidential log-in credentials, when it appears in Search results.”

According to a Google support page, the company will consider now consider removal requests for the following types of information:

  • Confidential government identification (ID) numbers like U.S. Social Security Number, Argentine Single Tax
  • Identification Number, Brazil Cadastro de pessoas Físicas, Korea Resident Registration Number, China Resident Identity Card, etc.
  • Bank account numbers
  • Credit card numbers
  • Images of handwritten signatures
  • Images of ID docs
  • Highly personal, restricted, and official records, like medical records
  • Personal contact info (physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses)
  • Confidential login credentials

In cases of doxxing, content removal requests should meet the following requirements:

  • Your contact info is present.
  • There’s the presence of:
    • Explicit or implicit threats, or
    • Explicit or implicit calls to action for others to harm or harass.

To request the removal of your personal information, you can head over to this page and fill up the application. After you submit your request, Google will send out an automated email confirmation and then review your request based on the requirements mentioned above. In some cases, where the initial request does not have a sufficient amount of information, Google may also ask you for more information and provide specific instructions to resubmit the application.

After evaluating your request, Google will send out a notification if it takes any action. The company notes that if the submitted URLs are “found to be within the scope of our policy, either the URLs will be removed for all queries or the URLs will be removed only from search results in which the query includes the complainant’s name, or other provided identifiers, such as aliases.” However, if your request doesn’t meet the requirements for removal, Google will offer a brief explanation. If your request is denied, you will still have the option to submit a new request with additional materials to support your case.

The policy update comes just weeks after Google rolled out the option to help users delete the last 15 minutes of their search history on Android. You can learn more about this feature by heading over to our original coverage.

Windows Insiders can now try dynamic refresh rate on the Surface Laptop Studio

Microsoft has finally begun testing the dynamic refresh rate feature on the Surface Laptop Studio, roughly six months after the laptop was launched. This enables the display on the laptop to automatically switch between a 60Hz or 120Hz refresh rate as needed, something Microsoft has promised since it first launched the laptop. The feature is only available to Windows Insiders for now, though.

As reported by Windows Central, the dynamic refresh rate mode is rolling out to Surface Laptop Studio users enrolled in the Windows Insider program, specifically the Dev and Beta channels. If you’re in that group, you should be receiving a pair of updates via Windows Update – one being a firmware update (version 10.0.156) and the other being a new Intel graphics driver (version 30.0.101.1340).

Once you have installed the updates, you should be able to find the new dynamic refresh rate mode by going into the Settings app and heading to Display -> Advanced display. Here, where’d you’d usually be able to choose between 60Hz and 120Hz, you’ll now see a Dynamic (60Hz or 120Hz) option.

Dynamic refresh rate option in the WIndows 11 Settings app on the Surface Laptop Studio

It looks like these are the only two refresh rates available, so you won’t get 90Hz or go as low as 10Hz when the screen is idle, for example, but it’s still good to have the option. According to Windows Central, the laptop does indeed stick to 60Hz when the screen is idle, and it changes to 120Hz while scrolling through a document. However, some animations don’t trigger the higher refresh rate, so the experience isn’t quite as smooth as it could be. Hopefully, that changes by the time this feature is rolled out to everyone. On that note, it doesn’t look like this feature is available for the Surface Pro 8, which also has a display capable of 120Hz. Presumably, it will get it eventually, too.

If you’re more familiar with the smartphone market, this kind of feature may actually be a bit unimpressive. Smartphones have been touting dynamic refresh rates for years, and some of them have much more granular control over how low that refresh rate can go to save battery. We can only hope that laptops like the Surface Laptop Studio kickstart a new trend and that PCs will make this kind of feature much more common. Xiaomi’s next foldable, codenamed “zizhan”, could look like this

Foldables will be a running theme for 2022, and we expect to see many more in the coming months. Xiaomi has already entered the foldable space with devices like the Mi Mix Fold, and we’re due for a refresh. Xiaomi’s foldable is following a more relaxed refresh cycle than its glass slab releases, and understandably so. While it’s been over a year since the Mi Mix Fold came to market, information remains scarce on what the next foldable will look like. But now, we may have some clue on how it will look.

XDA Senior Member kacskrz spotted graphical assets within the latest MIUI China builds that show off a foldable that looks different from the Mi Mix Fold.

The animation file shows off a few angles and folded states of an unidentified Xiaomi device. Notably, the camera bump on the back of the device is a square with rounded corners, instead of the more rectangular bump seen on the Mi Mix Fold. This could indicate that Xiaomi may be keeping the camera setup more practical instead of as bleeding-edge as it was on the Mi Mix Fold, perhaps marking this next foldable as an overall mass-market product.

We also see the cutout camera on the outer screen. The inner screen is clean, indicating that Xiaomi could be sticking with its decision to not have any cameras on the inner display at all.

Xiaomi "zizhan" foldable

Kacskrz has shared more information spotted within MIUI China releases. We know the Xiaomi foldable is codenamed “zizhan” (vs “cetus” for the Mi Mix Fold). Further, code within MIUI suggests that “zizhan” will share a display panel used on “umi” which is the codename for the Mi 10. The Mi 10 is a glass slab flagship, so we presume that this means that the outer display on the foldable will be the same panel as used on the Mi 10. This then further points to the cover display being a 90Hz FHD+ panel with possible HDR 10+ support. The display size on the Mi 10 is 6.67-inches, but the device has curved edges, so the measured dimensions could vary when used on the flatter foldable.

We’ll keep an eye out for more information on this Xiaomi foldable.
