OnePlus 8 on Verizon finally gets the Android 11 update with OxygenOS 11

The unlocked OnePlus 8 received the stable Android 11 update with OxygenOS 11 back in November. Three months later, OnePlus is finally rolling out the latest software to the OnePlus 8 5G UW on Verizon. The update comes with a software version IN2019_15_210110, and on top of bringing the jump to Android 11, it also includes the November 2020 security patches and improvements to the 5G Ultrawide Band.

As expected, the OxygenOS 11 brings a host of exciting changes to the OnePlus 8 5G UW, including a fresh UI focusing on one-handed usability, Game Space, the highly requested Ambient Display, improved Zen Mode, and much more.

The stable Android 11 with OxygenOS 11 has begun rolling out to Verizon OnePlus 8 owners. If you own one, be on the lookout for OTA in the coming days. As it’s usually the case with phased OTA rollouts, however, it might take some time for the update to reach all devices. You can also check for the update manually by heading to Settings > System > System Updates.

OPPO opens up Android 11 betas for the OPPO Reno 2 F, Reno 10x Zoom, and OPPO F15

Earlier this month, OPPO shared a timeframe detailing a list of smartphones it had planned to update to Android 11 with ColorOS 11. Staying true to its promise, OPPO has now opened up the Android 11 beta program based on ColorOS 11 for the Reno 2 F, Reno 10x Zoom, and F15.

The closed beta program is currently limited to the Indian variants, but OPPO says it will be coming to other regions as well. To enroll your OPPO device in the Android 11 beta program, make sure you’re running the latest firmware. Then go to Settings > Software Update > tap on the settings icon located in the upper right-hand corner > click “Trial version“ and hit the Update Beta Version. On the next screen, you’ll be asked to fill in details and submit the application. If your application passes the review, you’ll receive the beta software OTA on your smartphone.

Unfortunately, the due date for the Reno 2 F lapsed on Jan 26. However, the beta program is still open for the OPPO F15 and OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, and users can go ahead and apply for the Android 11 beta right now. Keep in mind that this beta software is intended to collect user feedback and isn’t ready for day-to-day use just yet. OPPO hasn’t revealed when it plans to release a stable release to these smartphones, but hopefully, it won’t take too long.

After installing the beta update, OPPO Reno 2 F, F15, and Reno 10x Zoom users can look forward to all the latest Android 11 features, including Chat Bubbles, Conversation Notifications, Smart Device controls, one time permissions for location and microphone, and more. On top of the usual Android 11 changes, users will also have access to all the new features introduced in ColorOS 11, such as new theming options, new wallpapers, Flex Drop, Super Power Saving mode, Ringtone Maker, improved dark mode, to name only a few.

The Huawei Nova 4 was the first Android smartphone to bring the hole-punch camera concept to the masses. The Nova 4 is over two years old today, but the trend it started continues to rule the Android world even in 2021. The hole-punch design brings us closer to our collective goal of getting rid of bezels and achieving maximum real screen estate on a smartphone display. Although less intrusive than notch cutouts, hole-punch can still come across as an eyesore to some people.

If you don’t like the idea of conceding your precious real screen estate to get rid of the hole-punch, Energy Ring by XDA Recognized Developer jagan2 presents a more innovative approach to utilize the hole-punch. The app adds a configurable ring around the hole-punch camera, allowing you to quickly glance over your smartphone’s remaining battery life. You can configure the ring’s direction as clockwise, bidirectional, or anticlockwise, customize the color and thickness of the ring, and even set a cool animation while your device is charging.

Energy Ring used to have multiple versions for different smartphones, but the developer today announced that they have now merged all variants into a single app called Energy Ring — Universal. How to access Google Home Device Controls on Samsung devices running One UI 3.1

With Android 11, Google introduced a new feature that helps you easily control all your connected Google Home devices. The feature, called Device Controls, adds home automation shortcuts in the power menu. This lets users control connected smart devices without opening the Google Home app. But while Google intended the Device Controls to show up in the power menu, the company didn’t require all OEMs to add the new controls on their respective Android skins. Because of this, Samsung has stuck with its older power menu design and has included the Device Controls in the quick settings page in One UI 3.1.

As a recent report from Android Police points out, Samsung has added Google Home device controls in the ‘Devices’ button in the quick settings page on One UI 3.1. To access these controls on your Galaxy device, you can follow these steps:

• Make sure you have the Google Home app installed on your device and you have at least one smart home device connected via the app.
  
• Swipe down on the home screen to open the notification shade and tap on the ‘Devices’ button found underneath the quick settings toggles.
  
• In the following screen, tap on SmartThings.
  
• Select the Home option in the drop-down menu and you should now see all your connected devices.

You can tap on the tiles for your smart home devices to get access to basic controls. For connected smart lights, you get the option to turn on/off the light, change the brightness, and pick a color. For smart speakers, you get the option to control the volume and cast audio, and for smart plugs, you get the option to quickly turn them on or off. For additional controls, you can tap on the arrow button in the top right corner to open the device controls in the Google Home app.

It’s worth noting that if you want quick access to these Device Controls on the lock screen, you’ll have to enable an additional setting. You can do so by tapping on the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner on the Devices page, tap on Settings, and then tap on the toggle next to the ‘Use while phone is locked’ option.

These new Device Controls are limited to Samsung devices running One UI 3.1. As such, they’re currently only available on the Galaxy S21 devices and the Galaxy Tab S7/S7 Plus. Other devices may also receive the new Device Controls following their One UI 3.1 update.

Much like Samsung, Xiaomi has also taken a different approach to Android 11’s Device Controls feature on its latest MIUI release. You can follow this guide to enable Device Controls on your Xiaomi device.

Netflix certifies the Samsung Galaxy S21 and TCL 20 5G for HDR playback

After months of leaks, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series is official and finally here. All three devices come with a gorgeous Dynamic AMOLED HDR10+ display that’s a joy to consume content on. Although the Galaxy S21 series supported Netflix HD out of the box, support for streaming HDR content was missing up until now.

Now, Netflix has gone ahead and added several new devices to the list of devices supporting HDR playback, including the Samsung Galaxy S21 5G, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, and TCL 20 5G. For an Android device to support HD video streaming, it must have Wideline L1 certification. Netflix, however, requires additional internal testing, which a device must pass before it gets added to Netflix’s list of HD and HDR playback supported devices. That means even if a device comes with Wideline L1 certification, it might not be able to stream HD or HDR content on Netflix out of the box.

Following are the new devices added to the list of devices certified to stream Netflix in HD & HDR:

• OPPO Reno 4 Pro
• Samsung Galaxy S21 5G
• Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G
• Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G
• TCL 20 5G

Do note that HDR streaming is only available on Netflix’s top tier Premium plan, which is priced at $18 per month. For the best experience, Netflix recommends at least 25Mbps internet speed with the streaming quality set to High.

Meanwhile, several OPPO smartphones, including the Reno 4 series, F17 Pro, A73, A93, have also gained HD certification. Streaming HD content on Netflix requires a subscription to the Standard or Premium plan.
