Google Camera Port Hub: Get the Best GCam APK for Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, and other phones!

Google Camera and its post-processing algorithms undoubtedly changed the game in terms of what we expect from smartphone cameras, elevating the Google Pixels to some of the best Android phones you can buy for the camera. That’s the exact reason why Google Camera ports are so highly requested for non-Google devices. With the appropriate ported Google Camera app, you can use Google’s superior HDR+ optimization as well as their Portrait Mode on virtually any smartphone that supports the Camera2API.

How to install and use Google Camera Port

  1. Make sure your device supports the Camera2 API. Here’s our guide on how to check if your Android device supports Camera2 API.
    • Besides the Camera2 API, Google Camera also requires Google Play Services to run. The app will crash if you try to run it on a phone without Google Apps. You can, however, use MicroG or Gcam Services Provider to spoof Google’s proprietary libraries.
  2. Download the most compatible APK file of the ported Google Camera from the next section and install it.
    • Either use one of the suggested versions for your device or pick one of the generic mods.
    • You may need to install additional XML configuration files.
  3. Restart the app.
  4. Success!

Android 13 DP1 brings a redesigned media player UI, preps “Media Tap To Transfer” feature

The first developer preview of Android 13 is officially out. While the final release won’t come out until later this year, the first preview gives us a broad outline of changes and features that are coming in the next major release of Android. From updated privacy features and improvements to Material You theming to new language controls and optimizations for large screen devices, Android 13 brings many exciting changes. In addition, the latest version also showcases various improvements coming to the media playback experience, including a redesigned media output picker UI, a brand new media play UI, and more.

New media player UI

With Android 11, Google consolidated the media player controls into the notification shade. In Android 12, the media player gained support for dynamic theming, but its overall design remained more or less the same. With the Android 13 Developer Preview 1, though, Google is preparing a fresh design (via Esper). The new media player is larger and puts a prominent play/pause button in the right corner. It also shows a progress bar with track info displayed on the left side. The album art is missing for some reason, but that’s likely to change in the future update. Note that this new media player UI isn’t live in the Developer Preview 1 and needs to be enabled by a SystemUI flag.

Redesigned media output Picker

Earlier this month, we learned that Android 13 might ship with a redesigned audio output picker. This new design is now live in the Android 13 DP1. For the unaware, the audio output picker is a button that appears in the upper right corner of the media player. When you click on it, it brings up a menu with all the available devices that you can route sound output to.

The new design replaces the old volume slider with a rounded and bubbly one. It now also highlights the currently selected audio device with a checkmark.

Media Tap To Transfer

Finally, the first developer preview of Android 13 contains references for a feature called “Media Tap To Transfer.” We first spotted this upcoming feature in January, and it’s still a work in progress in Android 13 DP1. It appears to be Google’s answer to Apple’s “Hand off audio” feature, allowing users to hold an iPhone close to a HomePod speaker to transfer media playback.

When you’re playing media on your smartphone or tablet and move close to a compatible Cast-enabled device, Android 13 will display a “media tap to transfer” chip. This will allow users to transfer the media playback from their current device to the receiver device, say, a speaker or smart TV. Like the new media player UI, this feature isn’t live in Android 13 DP1.

Android’s Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband stacks become mainline modules in Android 13

Google just dropped the first Android 13 developer preview, and it gives us a glimpse of some of the changes coming in the next major Android upgrade. As we highlighted in our announcement post, Android 13 DP1 reveals that Google will roll out updated privacy controls, a new Photo picker API, a Quick settings placement API, new Quick Settings tiles, and much more with Android 13 later this year. But those aren’t all the changes coming in the next big Android release. In fact, Google’s blog post glosses over some of the other critical changes included in the release. In this post, we’ll take a look at one such change, which will allow Google to push new Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband features to users without depending on OEMs to release timely software updates.

According to Mishaal Rahman’s deep dive into Android 13 DP1, Google will make the Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband stacks mainline modules in Android 13. For the unaware, Android’s Project Mainline essentially lets Google take control of critical framework components and system applications, thereby allowing the company to deliver new features and security updates for those components/applications without waiting for OEMs to roll out a software update.

To do so, Google makes use of Mainline modules, which can be updated through the Google Play Services framework and the Google Play Store. In Android 13, Google is making Android’s Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband stacks mainline modules. This will let the company add new features to the Bluetooth and Ultra-wideband stack and get them to users as quickly as possible.

Rahman further reveals that Google is already working on adding new features, like support for the new Bluetooth LE Audio standard, to the Bluetooth stack. In addition, the company is working on a new Jetpack Library and a reference HAL for the Ultra-wideband stack, which, combined with the updateable UWB mainline module, will allow the company to expand the use of UWB hardware for new software features.

Does the Samsung Galaxy S22 series support wireless charging?

Wireless charging is a feature that many consumers look for in their next phones. Personally speaking, charging a phone isn’t the most tedious task out there, but plugging in and removing a cable takes a couple of extra seconds. Using a wireless charger is just so much more convenient, and many high-end phones support the feature. And if you’re wondering, yes, that includes the Samsung Galaxy S22 series.

All three phones in the Galaxy S22 series support wireless charging, including reverse wireless charging (Wireless PowerShare, as Samsung calls it). That shouldn’t be a surprise considering Samsung’s flagship phones have supported wireless charging for a while. There’s no wireless charger in the box, though. How does wireless charging work on the Galaxy S22 series?

Just like most other phones right now, the Samsung Galaxy S22 series charges wirelessly with the Qi standard. This is an interface that transmits power over a short-range wireless connection, allowing you to charge your phone without plugging in a cable. Essentially, all you need to do is place your phone down on a wireless charger (it can be a mat, stand, or just about anything that can fit a charging coil inside) and it’ll begin charging if it’s properly aligned. Qi is pretty much the only wireless charging standard that matters right now, so finding a compatible charger should be easy.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series supports wireless charging speeds up to 15W, which isn’t the fastest out there, but it’s still decently quick. That’s one of the downsides of wireless charging – it tends to be slower than wired alternatives. The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus support up to 25W wired charging, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra supports up to 45W charging, for example. That limitation of wireless charging exists because it’s hard to transmit power wirelessly without generating a lot of heat that could potentially cause damage.

But that’s not all, because the Galaxy S22 phones also support Wireless PowerShare, or reverse wireless charging. Essentially, you can use your phone as a charger for another device. The Galaxy S22 series can provide up to 4.5W of power to another device. While you can try to power up another phone this way, it’s really meant for charging accessories that also support wireless charging, like Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro. Because those devices have small batteries, it’s easy to charge them this way.

Should you get a wireless charger?

Wireless charging isn’t a necessity as much as it is a convenience feature. Like we’ve said, it allows you to just put your phone down on a charger and it will charge, no fiddling with cables required. You can have your phone charging at your desk while you work, or even get a charging stand that holds the phone up so you can easily glance at the screen if you need to. It’s more suited for drop-and-forget situations, so the next time you pick your phone up, you’re in a better position for use in the day.

Another big benefit is that you can use the USB Type-C port for something else while the phone charges. The Samsung Galaxy S22 (like most flagship phones) doesn’t have a headphone jack, so if you want to use wired headphones, you’re going to need that port. With a wireless charger, you can keep the port free for situations like this. You would need to figure out the ideal charger for such a situation though, as many stands would block the port in portrait orientation, while some others may not have correct coil positioning for landscape charging.

Wireless charging does have its downsides, though, since you can’t really use your phone while it’s charging this way. Every time you pick up the phone, it’ll stop charging until you put it back on the charger, and that can be more of an inconvenience than wired charging for some people. Plus, as we’ve mentioned, wireless charging just isn’t as fast as wired charging most of the time, and it’s more expensive, too.
