Visual Studio 2022 17.1 inches closer to release with new Preview 2 build

Visual Studio is one of the most popular integrated development environments (IDEs) around, with support for many different programming languages. The latest available version is Visual Studio 2022 version 17.0.3, but Microsoft is getting closer to the release of 17.1 with a new preview build.

Microsoft said in a blog post, “We’ve continued to iterate on the themes of the Visual Studio 2022 release and have enhanced existing features, brought new productivity improvements, and made it easier for you to make Visual Studio your own. Performance work is never done and we strive to do better every release. In 17.1, we’ve optimized Find All reference searches in C++ projects with up to a 22% improvement.”

The 17.1 update includes new features when working in Git code repositories, such as enhanced detached head support, the ability to compare the current branch to other branches, quickly reviewing pull requests, and checking out commits of any remote branch. When you create a new branch in one repository, there’s also a new option to create the same branch across other repositories. With any luck, you won’t have to reach for the command line quite as often in Visual Studio 7.1, at least when it comes to working with projects in Git.

Visual Studio 7.1 also has a few new features for saving files. You can now automatically run a Code Cleanup profile every time you save a file, available from Tools > Options > Text Editor > “Run Code Cleanup profile on Save”. There’s also a new feature for automatically saving your file when you switch to a different application on your computer. Finally, there are some language-specific improvements for .NET and C++, as well as a new option to set custom tab colors based on the project and file extension, which should help organization when working with multiple projects in the same window.

You can download Visual Studio Code 2022 17.1 Preview 2 from Microsoft’s website. It’s not clear when the final 17.1 release will be available.

AMD Ryzen 6000 Series: Release date, price, and everything you need to know

After a successful run with the 5000 series CPUs, AMD kickstarted its 2022 product launches with a new generation of chips for the notebook market. AMD marked the beginning of a busy and important year with its new Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors. These “Rembrandt” APUs feature up to eight powerful Zen3+ cores and its latest RDNA 2 graphics to deliver reliable performance for day-to-day workloads, gaming, and more. There’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Ryzen 6000 series mobile chips, so we decided to curate all the information in place. The Ryzen 6000 family of mobile processors has ten different SKUs that are divided into two main categories. There’s the U-series which includes 15W-28W hardware to power portable thin and light notebooks, and then there are the H-series with up 35W and 45W+ units for high-end gaming laptops. Together, we’re looking at quite the lineup which AMD says will be used in over 200 premium machines in 2022.

AMD Zen3+ Cores

The AMD 6000 series processors are built on the updated AMD “Zen 3+” core that is optimized to deliver high performance-per-watt. It’s worth pointing out that these are the fastest AMD Ryzen processors yet, with up to 5GHz clock speeds. The new Zen3+ cores have now some advanced power management features to increase the overall endurance of these chips. The new Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors use up to 30% less power than the previous-gen processors in some workloads, which is quite impressive.

AMD RDNA 2 Architecture-Based Graphics

The AMD Ryzen 6000 series mobile CPUs, in case you don’t know, are also the first mobile processors to feature RDNA 2 architecture-based iGPU. RDNA 2 allows the new APUs to perform twice as fast as the last-gen APUs. The Rembrandt APU is the industry’s first APU with hardware ray-tracing, and AMD says it works flawlessly with the help of the company’s Fidelity FX Super Resolution. The new 6000 mobile chips have up to 12 graphics compute units with up to 2.4GHz GPU frequency. This is an upgrade from eight Vega units that we’ve seen in the past from AMD.

With up to 1.5x larger GPU Compute Engines and up to 1.5X more memory bandwidth, AMD is touting the new chips to be able to deliver a truly playable gaming on-the-go experience. The company is promising 1080p gaming at varying graphics settings with just the APU. This means, even the portable thin and light machines should be able to handle your gaming needs, without forcing an to upgrade to a more powerful machine.

AMD has also announced a set of new mobile graphics solutions that allow users to benefit from AMD’s Advantage platform when paired with the new H35+ CPUs. Pairing a Ryzen 6000 series mobile processor with, say, a 6000 series mobile GPU will allow the system to use SmartShift Max for dynamically adjusting power consumption between CPU and GPU for better performance and power efficiency.

DDR5 Support & Microsoft Pluton

As expected, AMD’s new Rembrandt CPUs also have updated memory controllers with support for up to DDR5-5200 and LPDDR5-6400. AMD hasn’t mentioned anything about DDR4 support which makes us believe the new APUs have ditched DDR4 support entirely in favor of the new standard. The new units also jump from PCIe 3.0 to PCIe 4.0 with 8x support for a discrete GPU and 12x split between storage and chipset. There’s also support for USB 4 and WiFi 6E, which means laptop manufacturers can follow Thunderbolt 3 specifications. The USB 4 support is not to be confused with Thunderbolt 4, though.

AMD also briefly mentioned the fact that its Ryzen 6000 CPUs features Microsoft Pluton Support. The first mentions of Pluton processor date back to November 2020 when Microsoft said it’s working with silicon partners including AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, etc., to enable chip-to-cloud security technology using Pluton. This, combined with other security features offered by AMD including AMD Secure Processor and AMD Memory Guard, the Ryzen 6000 series CPUs are touted to be some of the most secure chips on the market.

All the new AMD Ryzen 6000 Series processors are built using TSMC’s 6nm process technology. The Ryzen 9 6980HX sits on top of the product stack carrying 8 cores and 16 threads. This particular, as you can see, can be boosted to hit a max frequency of 5.0GHz, making it the fastest Ryzen chip on the market. This is one we expect locking horns with Intel’s Core i9-12900HK as well as the Apple M1 Max chip. The Ryzen 9 6980HS is also just as powerful, although it defaults to 35W, as opposed to 45W+ on the 6980HX.

All the Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 CPUs, as you can see, also have a larger GPU Compute Engine with as many as 12 GPU compute units. This, as we mentioned earlier, is an upgrade from eight Vega units as seen in previous Ryzen APUs. The Ryzen 6000 U-series chips will enable powerful experiences for those who’re looking to buy notebooks with thin and form factors.

AMD Ryzen 6000 CPUs Release Date & Pricing

AMD’s Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs are available to OEMs right now, which means it’s only a matter of time till we start seeing new and improved versions of the existing laptops on the market. A handful of manufacturers including Lenovo, HP, Razer, MSI, Alienware, etc., have already announced a bunch of new laptops powered by the Ryzen 6000 mobile CPUs.

Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 promises better upload performance and improved efficiency

At CES 2022, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced Wi-Fi 6 Release 2, an update to the Wi-Fi 6 standard. The latest release brings several improvements including faster uplink performance, improved power efficiency, and more.

First and foremost, Wi-Fi Certified 6 Release 2 offers greater uplink capacity. It adds support for uplink multi-user MIMO, allowing multiple devices to upload content concurrently to an access point (AP). Uplink multi-user MIMO support enables faster upload speeds and reduces latency for gaming, video conferencing, and IoT devices. In addition, the release also adds new high-speed channels in the 6 GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi 6E, unlocking an even faster and more reliable Wi-Fi experience.

“Wi-Fi delivers advanced capabilities that have driven tremendous global innovation, paving the way for massive growth in Wi-Fi applications that users rely on every day. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 Release 2 furthers Wi-Fi’s evolution to address today’s market needs, and supports more high-performance Wi-Fi scenarios with greater capacity, efficiency, and reliability,” said Edgar Figueroa, president, and CEO, Wi-Fi Alliance.

Another area of focus is power management. The latest release includes some new power and sleep mode enhancements such as broadcast target wake time (TWT), extended sleep time, and dynamic multi-user spatial multiplexing power save (SMPS). These enhancements will allow devices in Wi-Fi Certified 6 Release 6 networks to receive extended sleep periods, specific wake up times for transmitting data, and allow dynamic shut off of redundant chains for improved power efficiency.

New features introduced in Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 will work across all three bands — 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz — supported by the Wi-Fi 6 standard. The new release comes as the adoption of Wi-Fi 6 continues to grow by leaps and bounds. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, nearly 2 billion Wi-Fi 6 devices are set to enter the market in 2022.

Major industry players such as Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm, NXP, and onsemi have already pledged support for the new release. First devices supporting Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 are expected to arrive in the first half of 2022.

Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge with 120W fast charging support launched in India

The past few months in India have been rather quiet with respect to phone launches. The Redmi Note 11T did make its way to India at the end of 2021 but there was nothing really special about it. However, that’s changing now with the launch of the Xiaomi 11i and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge.

Xiaomi reintroduced its ‘i’ series of phones in India with the Mi 10i at the beginning of last year, which offered 5G support and a 108MP camera. Continuing that tradition of introducing new innovations in this series, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is the first phone to come with 120W fast charging in India. It’s accompanied by the more affordable Xiaomi 11i that also charges pretty fast at 67W. Here are all the details about the two devices.

If you went through the specifications of both phones, you would realize that the only difference between the Xiaomi 11i and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is in terms of battery and charging. The standard Xiaomi 11i has a larger 5,160mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. But, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge takes it up a notch with 120W fast charging. The battery capacity has been reduced slightly on the HyperCharge variant, though, and you get a 4,500mAh unit. Given the extremely fast charging, the smaller battery size shouldn’t matter too much. After all, Xiaomi claims that you can charge the phone completely from 0-100% in just 15 minutes which is insane.

Apart from that, both phones share the exact same specifications throughout. Under the hood, there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on the 6nm manufacturing node. It is a mid-range SoC that should ensure great performance on the device. Of course, you also get 5G connectivity with 8 5G bands. The base variant of both devices gets 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded via a hybrid slot, which means you can either use two SIM cards or a SIM and a micro SD card.

Another highlight of the Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge is the 108MP primary camera. Of course, Xiaomi has used this sensor on a lot of its phones already so it isn’t something new. But it ensures that the phones are well-rounded in all aspects from performance to cameras to charging. An aspect where Xiaomi has been doing really well on all its upper mid-range devices is the display. The Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge don’t disappoint in this regard either. The phones get a 6.67-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10 support.

The phones adopt flat sides along the edges reminiscent of the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 design. The frame is made of polycarbonate while the back is glass. Xiaomi has opted for a nice-looking design for the Xiaomi 11i series and the color options complement it well. For those wondering, both the 67W charger for the Xiaomi 11i and the 120W charger for the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge are provided within the box itself.

The Xiaomi 11i starts at ₹24,999 for the base variant while the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge starts at ₹26,999. The higher RAM variants are priced at ₹26,999 and ₹28,999, respectively. You will be able to purchase the phones from Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Home Stores, and official retail partners.

Google brings back Cast volume controls for Pixel phones with January 2022 update

With Android 12, Google quietly removed one important feature: the ability to control the volume of Cast-enabled devices using your phone’s volume buttons. On Android 11 and earlier versions you could change the volume of an ongoing Cast session by simply pressing the volume buttons from any screen. But that convenience is gone in the latest version of Android — you now have to open the relevant app to adjust the volume. Earlier in November Google said it had to temporarily disable the feature due to a legal issue and that it would bring it back in Android 12L. But it appears we won’t have to wait till the next Android release to get the feature back.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, Google has seemingly re-enabled Cast volume controls for Pixel phones running Android 12 with the January 2022 security update. That means you can once again control the volume of your Cast session using the volume keys from any screen.

As you can see in the screenshot above, when you’re streaming something to a Cast-enabled device, pressing the volume key will bring up the familiar Cast volume slider.

It’s unclear whether Cast volume controls will make their way to other Android 12 devices anytime soon. For now, it seems the feature is only coming to Pixel phones running Android 12. The January 2022 update was released earlier this week and is currently rolling out to the Pixel 3, Pixel 4, and Pixel 5 series. Meanwhile, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will get it sometime later this month.

Anker shows off its new 100W GaN charger, AIO webcam, and Android TV projector at CES

CES is a notable event for the tech industry, where companies get to show off their latest products and technologies. This year’s event is no different, as we’ve witnessed the reveal of some exciting products. Some of the noteworthy highlights of CES 2022 come from Anker. The company has shared details about its upcoming devices — including a 100W GaN charger, AIO webcam, and an Android TV projector.

Anker revealed a new 100W gallium nitride charger at CES (via The Verge). It features one USB type A in addition to two USB type C ports, and it supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 PPS. This wall charger allows power delivery at up to 100 watts. However, it’s worth mentioning that if you have more than one device plugged into it, then it’ll divide the 100W between them accordingly. The company states that this Anker 736 Nano II is “the world’s smallest 100W gallium nitride wall charger,” and it will be available in stores next March for $79.

Another handy product that Anker announced at CES is an all-in-one (AIO) webcam (via The Verge). The B600 Video Bar is the go-to in the era of remote work and endless Zoom meetings. It features a 2K sensor that can capture at 30FPS, adjustable field of view, autofocus, AI-powered zooming, and more. Additionally, its microphones are capable of reducing background noise so others can hear you more clearly.

In addition to that, this AOI webcam comes with speakers and a light. The latter can supports MagicSight — which adjusts the lighting automatically — and can be further controlled through an app. This makes the Video Bar the ultimate online conferencing tool. You won’t have to deal with separate devices to get the correct lighting, upload your live video stream, and listen to what people are saying on their ends. You can grab one starting January 25 for $220 only.

In addition to the charger and webcam, Anker also revealed at CES a new Android TV projector that comes with built-in speakers (via The Verge). The Nebula Cosmos Laser 4K runs Android TV 10.0 and includes a “4K streaming dongle” to mirror content from your phone. As its name suggests, it can project 4K images at 2400 ANSI lumens. This makes it a decent projector for dark environments. Additionally, it includes a pair of 30W speakers to make it convenient to move your setup around. The company states that it’ll be available on Kickstarter starting January 11 for $2,199, with shipping aimed at March.

Samsung’s YouMake Project aims to take product customization to the next level

During its CES 2022 keynote, Samsung unveiled a host of new products, including the Samsung Freestyle projector, a new range of Micro LED, Mini LED, and Lifestyle TVs, and several new 4K monitors. In a press release highlighting the YouMake Project, Samsung notes that it empowers consumers to “choose and customize products based on what matters most to them, so they can enjoy a more personalized experience across devices.” The initiative takes Samsung’s Bespoke vision to the next level and will give buyers the option to customize everything from home appliances to smartphones and other products from the company.

During the keynote, Samsung said that the YouMake Project will launch on its website later this month, giving users a chance to personalize their Samsung smartphones, TVs, refrigerators, wearables, and more. The project’s website also includes a virtual showroom that helps users experience customized products before purchase.

It’s worth noting that Samsung has offered customization options for home appliances under the Bespoke banner for a while now. The company recently expanded the Bespoke range to include the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Watch 4. The YouMake project aims to take things a step further and include all the other products from the company. At the moment, we’re not sure whether Samsung plans to merge its Bespoke range with the YouMake Project or not. However, that seems unlikely as Samsung also showcased a couple of new Bespoke products during the keynote, including Bespoke options for the Family Hub, French 3-Door and 4-Door refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and over-the-range microwaves, Jet vacuum, and Washer and Dryer.
