Early leak highlights Samsung’s tablet and TWS earbuds lineup for 2022

Soon after Samsung wrapped up its last Galaxy Unpacked event for 2021, leaks about the company’s next-gen flagship smartphones popped up online. We’ve seen multiple leaks about the upcoming Galaxy S22 series in the weeks since, showcasing the updated design and highlighting key specifications. While we’re still a couple of months away from the Galaxy S22 series launch, a new leak highlighting Samsung’s production schedule for 2022 has now surfaced online. The leak reveals that Samsung will launch four variants of the Galaxy Tab S8 next year, along with successors to the Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy Buds Live.

According to information obtained by The Elec (via @FrontTron), Samsung’s wireless business division has shared its business plans for 2022 with about 30 major partners. The plan reveals that Samsung is prepping four models in its upcoming flagship tablet lineup — the Galaxy Tab S8 Lite, Galaxy Tab S8, Galaxy Tab S8 Plus, and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. The company plans to kick off production of the high-end variants by Q2 2022, while the Lite model will go into production by Q4 2022. In addition, Samsung is planning to launch two Galaxy A series tablets, the Galaxy Tab A8 and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, next year.

Samsung seems to be betting big on the Galaxy Tab S8 Lite, Galaxy Tab A8, and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, as it plans to produce 1.6 million units of the Tab S8 Lite and 11 million units each of the Galaxy Tab A series models.

Furthermore, the report reveals that Samsung will begin production of the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Buds Live 2 in Q3 2022, with plans to produce 4.8 million and 3.3 million units, respectively. A successor to the Galaxy Buds Pro is also in the works, and the company aims to kick off production of 3.1 million units in Q2 2022.

Discord brings custom backgrounds to video calls, tests new account switcher

Discord is one of the most popular platforms gamers use to interact online. It’s a feature-rich communication tool that allows users to socialize via text and audio/video calls. This powerful service also enables friends to watch YouTube videos together, join Clubhouse-like audio rooms, and listen to music as a group. You can use most of its prominent features for free. However, the company includes an optional subscription that unlocks more perks. The latest additions to this platform are custom backgrounds to video calls and a new account switcher in beta.

Custom background in video calls

Discord tweeted yesterday that it’s bringing custom background support to video calls. The feature already exists on some popular video conferencing apps, such as Zoom and Google Meet. By default, all users will be able to choose from a collection of illustrations. A blur option is also included as part of the free package. Users who want to upload their own pictures to use as backgrounds have to upgrade to Nitro — the service’s premium subscription.

Last month we reported that Discord may soon let you switch accounts within the app. The wait is over – for some, at least. As Redditor u/SilentBlade999 has shared, the company is currently beta testing the new switcher with select users. The Redditor received the new feature on the web version of Discord. However, other users have reported in the comments section that they’ve also received it on the mobile app. It’s unclear whether Discord will fully roll out the feature soon or stick to a small percentage of users for the time being.

XDA Basics: How to use the Hide My Email feature on iOS 15

Apple revealed iOS 15 back in June, during its opening WWDC21 keynote. This release was then made available to the public in September, after months of beta testing. One of the new features that it brings is Hide My Email. It’s an exclusive feature for iCloud+ subscribers using the latest Apple OS. Hide My Email allows users to create random aliases that forward mail to their original iCloud email address, allowing you to avoid forwarding your main id for random activities. It’s a great privacy feature that makes avoiding spammy websites and people easier, but it may be a little difficult to find if you didn’t really know if the feature existed or where it exists. So, here’s how to use Hide My Email on iOS 15.

How to use Hide My Email on iOS 15

There are three ways to take advantage of this feature, two available for all iOS 15 users and one only on iOS 15.2 (currently in beta) and later.

Through the Settings app on iOS 15.0 and later

  • Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.

using hide my email on iOS 15 1

  • Click on the header with your name on it at the very top.

using hide my email on iOS 15 2

  • Hit iCloud.

using hide my email on iOS 15 3

  • Click on Hide My Email.

using hide my email on iOS 15 4

  • Tap on Create New Address.

using hide my email on iOS 15 5

  • iOS will display a random alias. Click on Continue or go for Choose Different Address if you want another alias.

using hide my email on iOS 15 6

  • Once you click Continue, you have to give it a Label and leave an optional Note.

using hide my email on iOS 15 7

  • You can then choose to which email address added to your Apple ID you want it to forward mail to.

And that’s it. You can now share this new email forward, without compromising on your main email.

  • To deactivate it and stop receiving mail through it, you can click on the alias you’ve created and do so there.
  • Then you will have a new section in the Hide My Email options that allows you to reactivate or permanently delete an alias.

Through Apple Keyboard suggestions on iOS 15.0 and later

  • Go to a website to sign up for an account.

using hide my email iOS 15 1

  • When clicking the email text filed, a Hide My Email suggestion should appear on your Apple Keyboard. Click it.

using hide my email iOS 15 2

  • You will be presented with a random alias. If you want another one, hit on the refresh button to its left. Otherwise, click Continue.

using hide my email iOS 15 3

  • Adjust its Label and add it an optional Note.
  • Hit on Use.
  • You can later view and adjust the alias in iCloud settings, as mentioned in the previous section of this tutorial.

Through Apple Mail app on iOS 15.2 and later

  • Launch the Mail app on your iPhone.
  • Create a new email as you would usually do.

Hide my email in mail app iOS 15.2 beta 2

  • Click on the From field and choose Hide My Email.

Hide My Email is also a great way to create several accounts on the same website. It also works as a privacy tool against spammers — humans and websites alike. It’s bundled with iCloud+ — which start at $0.99/month in the US.

The Apple Watch SE gets a $60 discount, the biggest this year

The Apple Watch SE (GPS, 40mm) is one of the few fitness trackers out there that are both feature-rich and affordable. This watch is just over one year old and runs the latest watchOS 8. When it comes to its hardware, this compact tracker includes most of the features Apple Watches are known for. You’re only missing out on ECG, always-on display, blood oxygen monitoring, and a few other gimmicks. This watch costs a couple of hundred dollars less than the latest Series 7, making it budget-friendly, without missing out on much. The best part? It just got a $60 discount, the biggest this year, making it even more affordable. You can own it for $219 only, while this Black Friday deal lasts.

    Apple Watch SE (GPS, 40mm)
This Apple Watch packs a lot of power and features, despite its low price tag. You can own it now for a mere $219, while this deal lasts. At $60 off, this is the biggest discount the Watch SE has seen this year.

I’ve been personally using the Apple Watch SE every single day since its release late last year. It’s my favorite fitness and iPhone companion. I use it to check notifications on the go, control music playback when jogging or commuting, and — obviously — track my activity. I also depend on it to check my heart rate when I’m stressed out and do breathing exercises. As a water-resistant watch, I keep it on at all times, even when showering or swimming. In fact, it can track your swimming exercises, both in pools and open sea. That’s not to mention being able to FaceTime and iMessage your beloved ones, even when your iPhone is off or away.

While the Series 6 and 7 are more feature-packed, none of what they offer is tempting to me. I can confidently say that the SE does what I need and more. I never find myself thinking about upgrading to a newer model, and I don’t see this changing anytime soon. Its battery life is great and sometimes lasts me over a day, and it runs the latest watchOS version. The only reasons I’d want to upgrade eventually would be its battery significantly degrading, no longer receiving OS updates, or Apple releasing a completely redesigned model.

Will you be buying this affordable Apple Watch? Let us know in the comments section below.

Tile to be acquired by Location Sharing app Life360, as competition with AirTag intensifies

Tile — the pioneer of Bluetooth tracking — popularized locating personal belongings through its expanding network of connected devices. However, earlier this year, the company found itself facing a serious rival with an even larger network — Apple. AirTags have a prominent advantage that Tile struggles to compete with. The coin-sized Apple trackers integrate into the Find My Network, making them discoverable through other Apple devices, such as iPhones. The location sharing app Life360 has shared that it plans to acquire Tile next year.

As reported by The Verge, Life360 has announced its plans to acquire Tile for $205 million. The AirTag competitor will still operate with its own brand identity. However, it will tightly integrate with Life360’s services to further expand its network and features. As a result, this acquisition is expected to contribute to both companies’ international growth plans.

For the unfamiliar, Life360 offers location sharing services, similar to those of Apple’s Find My Friends. However, the former is platform agnostic, which gives it an advantage over Apple’s services. Both Tile and Life360 support Android and iOS, and the integration will only further grow their covered network. Life360 is active on 33 million smartphones, and it’s expected to expand Tile’s Finding Network by around 10 folds.

Life360 Tile perks

The deal is excepted to close in the first quarter of 2022, and Tile will retain its current team and leadership after the acquisition. Afterwards, customers of both services will get perks, such as free Tiles when upgrading to Life360 Platinum and vice versa. This will encourage people to use both services, which will only make them more popular. Chris Hulls — Life360’s cofounder and CEO — states:

… we believe the launch of the Apple AirTags is the tipping point where all the devices you care about will become location-enabled. While it may sound counterintuitive, or even a bit corporate-speak, that competition from a platform giant is a good thing, we genuinely believe it is one of the best things ever to happen to Tile.

He adds:

And, as an important sub-point, once this category fully emerges, Android users will demand a solution too, and as of now, we are the only real cross-platform game in town.

Whether this acquisition will stop Apple from dominating the Bluetooth tracking field or not is yet to be seen.

Do you use any Bluetooth tracking devices? If so, which? Let us know in the comments section below.

Google and Samsung’s efforts on Wear OS seem to be paying off

At I/O 2021 in May, Google announced that it was giving Wear OS a much-needed revamp in partnership with Samsung. We got our first look at the updated Wear OS soon thereafter when Samsung rolled out its latest Galaxy Watch 4 series, and it was a big improvement over the previous release. It seems like consumers also love Wear OS 3, as it has seen a massive jump in market share in Q3 2021.

This is what Wear OS 3 with One UI Watch is like on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

According to Counterpoint’s latest market study report (via 9to5Google), Wear OS’ market share grew to 17 percent in Q3 2021, up from just 4 percent in Q2 2021. The strong growth looks to be a direct result of Samsung’s adoption of Wear OS on its latest smartwatches. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series reportedly made up nearly 60 percent of smartwatch shipments in North America and Europe during the third quarter. While Apple maintained the top stop in the smartwatch segment, its share fell 10 percent YoY due to the delayed launch of the Apple Watch Series 7.

Q3 2021 Global smartwatch shipment share

“Thanks to the launch of the Galaxy Watch 4 series, Samsung achieved its highest quarterly shipments, narrowing the gap with Apple and reclaiming the second place from Huawei. From this smartwatch series, Samsung has expanded its app ecosystem by using Android-based Wear Os instead of Tizen. The brand has also broadened users’ range of choice by launching two models – basic and classic. The newly added body composition feature has also fetched a good response,” Counterpoint noted.

Q3 2021 Global smartwatch OEM shareWe expect Wear OS’ market share to rise further as more companies offer new smartwatches with the latest update. Fitbit will likely be one of the key players to boost market share in the coming months, along with Fossil and Mobvoi. The company is currently working on new watches with Wear OS, which should hit the market soon.

Do you own a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic? What do you think of the new software update? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
