Twitter sets up cryptocurrency team, explores new NFT features

Cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are all the rage nowadays. In an attempt to explore crypto, blockchains, and other emerging decentralized technologies, Twiter is setting up a dedicated crypto team called Twitter Crypto.

Twitter describes its new crypto unit (via Engadget) as “a center of excellence for all things blockchain” that will set the “strategy for the future of crypto at (and on) Twitter.” The team will be spearheaded by Tess Rinearson, who has previously worked at multiple cryptocurrency startups such as Interchain, Tendermint, and Chain.

In a series of tweets, Tess explained that Twitter “truly gets crypto” and that her team will try to figure out what crypto can do for Twitter as well as for creators. Initially, the team will be exploring ways to support creators to use centralized apps to manage their virtual goods and currencies. The team will also be working closely with Bluesky to shape the future of decentralized social media.

Twitter’s love for crypto and decentralized currencies isn’t new. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has been quite vocal about his support for cryptocurrencies (in fact, his Twitter bio literally reads just #bitcoin.) The company also recently added a new feature called Bitcoin tips that allows creators to be paid in, well, Bitcoin.

According to prolific reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter is also working on several new NFT tools, including a Collectible profile tab, NFT view, and NFT details view.

Besides Twitter, other social media platforms are also looking to embrace blockchain and NFT technologies. Discord recently announced that it’s planning to integrate MetaMask, a popular crypto wallet, while Reddit is looking to build an NFT platform.

The Xbox app will let you install PC games on any folder you want

Microsoft is reportedly changing the game installation experience for games on the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app for PC, allowing you to install them on any folder you choose. This is a big step in making the Microsoft Store a platform more similar to Steam when it comes to PC gaming. The information comes from The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, but the company has also seemingly corroborated the report.

If you’ve ever tried to look into the apps installed through the Microsoft Store, you’re probably familiar with the infamous WindowsApps folder. This is where all Microsoft Store apps and UWP apps are installed, and it’s a highly restricted folder that requires messing with system settings if you want to make any modifications to it. For games, this means it’s also very hard to back up your installed games in a different folder or drive, for example.

With an upcoming update to the Xbox app for PC, which is reportedly being tested internally, Microsoft will allow users to install their games in any folder or drive they want. This is good news for a few reasons. First off, if you have a slow internet connection, you may be able to back up your games so you don’t have to redownload them if you reset your PC or you run out of space on your internal storage. Even with a fast connection, some games can take up over 100GB, so even decent connections take a while to download files of that size.

The Xbox app is also reportedly adding options to verify or repair a game’s files, so if anything has been broken, it can be brought back to a working state, presumably without having to download the full game again. This is another feature that’s supported in platforms like Steam.

Another benefit may have to do with the modding community. Fans have been modding games to include different assets and whole new content for years, and Microsoft started to embrace this community by allowing modding support in some games on the Xbox app. However, it’s still a somewhat controlled ecosystem. By installing games outside the confines of the restricted WindowsApps folder, users can more easily alter game files to mod the game.

In response to The Verge, Microsoft actually confirmed that it’s taking a more open approach to games on the Xbox. Jason Beaumont, partner director of program management for Xbox experiences at Microsoft, said:

“With great PC games like Back 4 Blood, Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Halo Infinite on day one with Game Pass, we wanted to provide players with more options to customize their experience in the Xbox app.”

Beaumont added that new features would be announced as they’re available, so it’s not exactly clear when users can try out these new features on their Windows machines. It’s also not clear whether this new experience would be exclusive to Windows 11 or if Windows 10 users will also benefit from it.

Want a Pixel 5 with the Tensor chip? Google was probably testing one

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the first Google phones to come with the company’s in-house Tensor SoC. But according to a recent finding, it appears Google started testing the new SoC on the Pixel 5 first.

XDA Recognized Developer Freak07 has uncovered evidence suggesting that the Mountain View giant was testing a Pixel 5 with a Tensor SoC. While digging through the Pixel 6 source, Freak07 came across kernel device tree files for two variants of the Tensor SoC, internally referred to as gs101. The first one is codenamed gs101-b0, while the second one is gs101-b0. We already know that gs101-b0 is the SoC in the Pixel 6 series, but it’s the first time we’re hearing about the gs101-a0.

Further digging by Freak07 shows that the gs101-a0 is related to a Pixel device codenamed Whitefin. Interestingly, Mishaal Rahman last month also spotted evidence of a device codenamed Whitefin. The device had similar specifications as the Pixel 5 but featured a Tensor SoC. This connection leads us to believe that Google was probably testing a Pixel 5 with a Tensor SoC, which never saw the light of day.

While we’ll never know the exact reason why Google decided against using the Tenor SoC on the Pixel 5, it’s likely that the chipset wasn’t ready in time for the launch of the Pixel 5. It’s also possible that Google had developed the Pixel 5 prototype to test the Tensor chip before offering it to the public with the Pixel 6 series.

To recall, the Tensor SoC features an octa-core CPU setup, featuring 2x ARM Cortex-X1 cores at 2.8GHz, two ARM Cortex-A76 cores at 2.25GHz, and 4x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz.  Google claims the new chip offers 80% faster CPU performance and a whopping 370% faster graphics performance than the Pixel 5’s Snapdragon 765 SoC.

WhatsApp beta update brings new visibility option to let you hide your information from specific contacts

WhatsApp has been testing a new visibility option to let you hide your information from specific contacts for a while now. The feature was first spotted all the way back in September. At the time, we learned that it would let you hide your Last Seen, Profile Picture, and About info from contacts of your choice. The feature has now finally started rolling out with the latest WhatsApp beta update, and you can try it out if you’re enrolled in the WhatsApp beta program.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta v2.21.23.14 for Android introduces the new visibility option for a few users. To use the feature, you’ll first have to download the latest release from the Play Store or APK Mirror. Then, you can navigate to the Privacy Settings and select the new “My Contacts Except…” option to add contacts you want to block. The visibility option is available for your WhatsApp Status, Last Seen, and About info.

Once enabled, selected contacts won’t be able to see your WhatsApp Status, Last Seen, and About information. However, if you disable Last Seen for a contact, you won’t be able to see it on their profile either. This limitation is not applicable to the WhatsApp Status and About information.

WABetaInfo notes that the feature is currently available for a limited number of beta testers, so you might not see the new visibility option even with the latest beta update. But since it has already started rolling out to some testers, it shouldn’t be long before WhatsApp rolls it out to more users.

WhatsApp has been testing several new features of late in an attempt to retain users. The messenger is currently testing a new Community feature, Novi integration for payments, a new UI for contact info, and much more.

Samsung Android 12 Tracker: Here are all the official One UI 4.0 beta builds to download and install

It’s that time of year again when Google releases the new version of its mobile operating system! The stable version of Android 12 is finally here after a long few months of beta testing, and a range of smartphone makers have already announced that they plan to roll it out to their users. Being one of the largest Android OEMs, Samsung is also busy finalizing the features exclusive to its custom skin, One UI, on top of the new version of Android in preparation for an eventual rollout of One UI 4.0 via the stable channel.

When it comes to beta testing, the Korean OEM kicked off the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series back in September. Samsung has yet to announce an official list of eligible Galaxy devices to get the Android 12 update, but the company will likely bring a handful of other devices into the beta phase, including older flagships and even some mid-rangers, before the eventual stable release. The public beta initiative is being conducted through the Samsung Members app, hence Galaxy device owners are advised to check the schedule for their region by opening the app and heading to the “Notices” section.

This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Samsung devices that have received their official Android 12 updates in the form of One UI 4.0, including both the public beta and the stable builds.

Since none of the Galaxy devices participated in Google’s Android 12 Developer Preview program, we will solely follow Samsung’s nomenclature of build numbers in the index below for the sake of simplicity.

You can find download links of One UI 4.0 public beta and stable releases below. These builds are first sorted with device names, and then according to their regions/SoC variants and release. Notably, the concept of a downgrade ROM isn’t applicable here. It is also worth mentioning that you can’t cross-flash a firmware that is intended for a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC-based Samsung Galaxy model (e.g. the USA variant) on its Exynos-powered counterpart (e.g. the European variant) or vice-versa.

Buying a PlayStation 5 isn’t going to get easier anytime soon

Sony’s latest game console, the PlayStation 5, has been in high demand ever since its launch. The console isn’t readily available in many regions, and the occasional restocks sell out in mere seconds. Although we expected Sony to ramp up the production to meet the overwhelming demand, it now seems like buying a PlayStation 5 won’t get easier anytime soon.

According to a recent Bloomberg report, Sony has reduced its PlayStation 5 production for this fiscal year due to supply constraints and logistics issues. Sources familiar with the matter have told the publication that Sony has cut the production from 16 million units to 15 million units. Sony’s CFO, Hiroki Totoki, reportedly told investors that logistics issues and parts shortages have grown more severe in the last few months, and PlayStation 5 sales have taken a significant hit.

In Q3 2021, PlayStation 5 sales were weaker than Sony’s expectations. Although the PlayStation 5 was Sony’s fastest console to reach 10 million sales, it has now fallen behind the sales pace of its predecessor. Sony is yet to release an official statement on the matter, so we can’t be sure if PS5 availability will improve in time for the upcoming holiday season.

Google releases Project Relate, a voice recognition app for people with speech impairments

To help people with speech impairment communicate more easily with Google Assistant and other people, Google has announced a new Android app called Project Relate.

As Google notes in a blog post, there are millions of people out there whose speech has been affected due to conditions like ALS, Cerebral Palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or Parkinson’s disease. As a result, these people often face difficulty being understood by other people and voice recognition services. The Project Relate app, currently in beta, aims to tackle these challenges. The app has three main features: Listen, Repeat, and Assistant.

Project Realte app features: Listen, Repeat, Assistant

  • Listen: Through the Listen feature, the Relate app transcribes your speech to text in real-time, so you can copy-paste the text into other apps, or let people read what you want to tell them.
  • Repeat: You can use the Repeat feature to restate what you’ve said using a clear, synthesized voice. We hope this can be especially helpful in face-to-face conversation or even when you want to speak a command to your home assistant device.
  • Assistant: Speak directly to your Google Assistant from within the Relate app, so you can take care of different tasks, such as turning on the lights or playing a song, with ease.

Google is currently looking for English speakers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US to try out the app and receive feedback. Testers will be asked to record 500 phrases, which will be used to better understand the user’s unique speech patterns and give access to the above features.

Google says for creating the app, it worked closely with many people with speech impairments, including Aubrie Lee, a brand manager at Google, whose speech is affected by muscular dystrophy.

Project Relate builds upon the efforts and research of Project Euphonia, a broad effort from Google’s Speech and Research teams to make voice recognition technology more accessible to people with speech impairment.
