OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are now available for cheaper in the US

Google’s latest Pixel devices — the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro — come with some significant improvements over the Pixel 5. Unlike the previous model, the latest Pixel devices pack flagship hardware, including the more powerful Tensor SoC, impressive high refresh-rate displays, and better cameras. But even with the premium hardware, Google has priced the Pixel 6 series quite aggressively. The regular Pixel 6 starts at just $599 and the Pixel 6 Pro starts at $899. At this price, the Pixel 6 series offers better value for your money than most other flagships launched this year, including the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro. To keep buyers interested in its latest flagships, OnePlus has now slashed the prices for the OnePlus 9 series in the US.

For the unaware, the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro initially went on sale for $729 and $1069 in the US. While the devices have been available at a significant discount several times since launch, they’ve never been as cheap as Google’s latest flagships. So it makes little sense for buyers in the US to opt for a OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro over the latest Pixel phones. OnePlus seems to be aware of this, which is probably why the company has slashed the prices (via Prasham Parikh) of its flagships in the US.

If you’re in the market for a new phone and you’ve not been able to pre-order the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, you can now get the OnePlus 9 on Amazon for $599 and the OnePlus 9 Pro for $799. For $599, you get the 8GB+128GB base model of the OnePlus 9, which features a 120Hz FHD+ display, the Snapdragon 888 SoC, 65W fast charging support, and a triple camera setup. The $799 OnePlus 9 Pro, on the other hand, features the Snapdragon 888 SoC, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, a 120Hz QHD+ display, 65W fast charging support, and a quad-camera setup.

It’s worth noting that OnePlus isn’t offering as significant of a discount on its website. The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are still priced at $659 and $969 on the company’s website. So we recommend that you purchase the devices by following the Amazon links below.

T-Mobile says its 5G now covers almost everyone in the U.S.

Recently, mobile analytics company Opensignal crowned T-Mobile as the fastest 5G network in the U.S. T-Mobile managed to achieve an average of 118.7 Mbps in download speeds, along with 16.1 Mbps in upload speed. It gets even better for T-Mobile users though, as not only is it the fastest network, the carrier has announced that its 5G now covers almost everyone in the U.S. According to T-Mobile, its Extended Range 5G covers 308 million people, and 186 million of those people are covered by the carrier’s Ultra-Capacity 5G. With this news, the Un-carrier edges closer to its goal of providing 200 million people with Ultra-Capacity 5G.

In the same announcement, T-Mobile also revealed a special edition of the Reese’s Take 5 bar — the Reese’s Take 5G. It’s available at “Apartment 5G” locations, where select T-Mobile stores will be converted into trick-or-treating destinations this Halloween.

“T-Mobile continues to expand its 5G footprint at an unparalleled pace, so we partnered with the candy icons at Reese’s this Halloween to help spread the word and give everyone more of what they love — more Reese’s, at ultra-fast 5G speed!” said Mike Sievert, CEO at T-Mobile. “Our multi-layered approach for fast and far-reaching coverage made us America’s 5G leader, so it made perfect sense to partner with THE famously layered candy brand to create the official candy of 5G, the Reese’s Take 5G bar … AND the best trick-or-treating experience. Zero tricks, way more Reese’s … now that’s Halloween on 5G!”  

With this expansion, T-Mobile solidifies itself as the largest 5G network in the U.S, providing Extended Range 5G to 308 million people out of the U.S. population of 330 million. Even better, the network’s Ultra Capacity 5G covers just over half of the U.S. population currently.

Ten visitors to Apartment 5G locations will win a free 5G smartphone, a year of T-Mobile 5G service, and a year of free Reese’s products.

Design

The design of the Pixel 6 series is one of its most interesting aspects. The two phones employ a two-tone design with a black camera bump covering the entire width of the back. The two colors on the back of the phone are divided by this bump. The space above the camera strip can be used to identify the two phones. The phone with more blank space above the camera bar is the Pixel 6 Pro. Google has generally opted for a safe design choice for Pixels over the years but we’re glad that the company decided to go with something more modern and striking this time with the Pixel 6 series.

The standard Pixel 6 has a matte aluminum finish while the Pixel 6 Pro has a light polished stainless steel frame. Both phones have an industrial design with squared-off corners. The metallic frame is flanked with glass on either side. The display is covered with Gorilla Glass Victus on both phones while the back has the same Victus glass only on the Pro. The standard Pixel 6 has Gorilla Glass 6 on the back.

The front of both phones is in line with pretty much most Android phones. Both phones have a centered hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera to keep the bezels to a minimum. Speaking of bezels, the Pixel 6 has slightly thicker bezels running all around the display. The edges are also flat on the Pixel 6. On the Pixel 6 Pro, Google has opted for a curved display that just blends into the frame on the sides, resulting in smaller bezels. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro also feature in-display fingerprint scanners instead of the rear-mounted one that was found on the Pixel 5.

Overall, the bold and unique design of the Pixel 6 series will certainly help it distinguish itself from other Android phones on the market. With many smartphone makers playing relatively safe with the designs of their phones, it’s nice to see Google leading from the front.

Display

The Google Pixel 6 features a 6.4-inch 90Hz flat display. This is an OLED panel so the color reproduction and viewing angles are going to be great. The Pixel 5 had a hole-punch cutout on the top right corner of the display which has now been moved to the center on the Pixel 6. The display specs are quite normal and are similar to what you would find on some other phones in this price range. There are some other manufacturers who bundle in a 120Hz refresh rate around this price bracket so we wish Google didn’t limit it to 90Hz on the non-Pro model. The bezels are also slightly on the thicker side giving the phone a slightly dated look when seen from the front.

The Pixel 6 Pro, on the other hand, packs a 6.67-inch QHD+ 120Hz curved AMOLED screen covered. The display used is an LTPO panel so the screen refresh rate can vary from 10Hz all the way up to 120Hz depending on what you’re going on the display. This is one of the best display panels that you can find on a smartphone and is similar to the one used on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Being a curved panel, the bezels on the sides are quite minimal. The big display makes the phone quite large but consumers who watch a lot of content on their phones will surely appreciate the extra real estate. The resolution has also been bumped up to QHD+ now from FHD+ on the Pixel 5, giving you a true flagship experience.

SoC, RAM, and Storage

One of the biggest changes with the Pixel 6 series this year is the use of Google’s own Tensor SoC. During the launch presentation, Google time and again mentioned that smartphone chipsets weren’t capable enough to handle Google’s complex AI and ML algorithms. This is why they decided to design their own chip for the Pixel 6 series. Tensor allows Google to run several Machine Learning algorithms on-device without compromising on the performance of the device.

The core configuration of the Tensor chip found on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is as follows –

  • 2x ARM Cortex-X1 clocked at 2.8GHz
  • 2x ARM Cortex-A76 clocked at 2.25GHz
  • 4x ARM Cortex-A55 clocked at 1.80GHz

Google says Tensor is 80% faster than the CPU on the Pixel 5, which used a Snapdragon 765 5G chipset. The integrated Mali G78-MP20 GPU has 20 cores and is supposedly 370% faster than the Pixel 5’s graphics. While we’ll have to test the real-world performance of the chip, Google seems to be heading in the right direction. We’ve seen the advantages of having a homegrown chip on the iPhone given how Apple optimizes the software to run with its own hardware. We hope to see a similar sort of optimization with the Pixel 6 series. Of course, the Tensor chip also brings 5G capabilities with it.

The standard Pixel 6 has 8GB RAM across all storage variants while the Pixel 6 Pro has 12GB of RAM. You can pick up the Pixel 6 in either 128GB or 256GB storage configurations while the higher-end Pixel 6 Pro is available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. The storage used on all variants is UFS 3.1.

Cameras and Camera Features

Cameras have long been a key component of the Pixel lineup. It’s the camera prowess of Pixel phones that drives a lot of buying decisions. That aspect has only gotten stronger with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Until now, Google used to rely heavily on its software and computational photography algorithms to produce great results. Since the first-gen Pixel, all the phones in the series were stuck with a 12MP sensor which was falling behind compared to all the large sensors with big numbers that other brands had been using for a while.

Thankfully, that has changed with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The Pixel 6 comes with a dual rear camera setup — a 50MP primary Samsung GN1 camera and a 12MP Sony IMX 386 ultra-wide lens. The Pixel 6 Pro, on the other hand, has a triple rear camera setup that includes an additional 48MP Sony IMX 586 telephoto lens along with the two cameras from the Pixel 6. When clubbed with Google’s software magic, the new camera hardware should produce some great quality images, but we’ll have to wait to get our hands on the phones before commenting on that. For selfies, the Pixel 6 has an 8MP shooter while the Pro variant gets an 11.1MP sensor.

Apart from the usual improvements to the camera, Google announced several software features that have been added to the Pixel 6 thanks to the Tensor chip. These features help you take better shots or improve the overall image output from the phones. Here are some of the camera features that Google announced and are coming to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro –

Battery and Charging

The standard Pixel 6 has a 4,600mAh battery which is quite large especially given that the phone isn’t as huge. Also, given that Google is using its own silicon, the battery optimization should ideally be better as opposed to using an SoC from a different company. Combined with the software optimizations, the Pixel 6 is expected to have great battery life.

The same applies to the Pixel 6 Pro. The larger Pro model has a 5,000mAh but also has a considerably larger screen. The LTPO panel, however, can lower its refresh rate to just 10Hz to conserve battery whenever required which should hopefully help the phone last longer. Apart from bigger batteries, Google has also improved the charging tech found on the Pixel 6 series.

All pIxel phones released prior to the Pixel 6 series only supported fast charging at up to 18W which feels dated in 2021. Thankfully, Google has fixed that by giving the Pixel 6 series support for 30W fast wired charging. There’s also support for fast wireless charging at 21W. Google will also sell you its new Pixel Stand later this year which supports fast wireless charging. As for the wired alternative, Google isn’t shipping chargers inside the box of the Pixel 6 series so you’ll have to purchase it separately.

Software

On the software front, Android 12 is what you get out of the box with both the Pixel 6 and the 6 Pro. The new Android version comes with the Material You design language and the wallpaper-based UX theming. It also packs a privacy dashboard to show which apps are using your phone’s camera, microphone, or location. Additionally, you get a bunch of new, redesigned widgets, and a number of other useful features that work in tandem with the new Tensor chip.

The Tensor chip enables Google to provide some exciting new features including Live Translate that can translate messages, or even spoken sentences in real-time. Google also said that they’ve made major improvements to voice typing and call screen with the help of Tensor. It’s now faster, smarter, and understands your commands better.

Google also announced that it will provide software support to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro for up to five years. However, this only includes security patches while Android version updates seem to be limited to just three years. While it’s great news that the phones will remain secure for up to 5 years, it’s also slightly disappointing since we were expecting Google to match Apple’s 5-year update window for the iPhone with the Pixel 6 series.

Google claims that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are some of the most secure smartphones out there thanks to the Titan M2 security chip that works alongside the Tensor SoC to keep all your data safe. A lot of the processing and Machine Learning happens on-device with the Pixel 6 series so you don’t have to be worried about your data being sent to remote servers. As for biometrics, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have in-display fingerprint scanners but there’s no face unlock.

Both phones have stereo speakers and are IP68 water and dust-resistant. As expected, there’s no headphone jack on either device.

Official Cases and Accessories

Google generally makes some nice cases available with every phone release and that’s the case this time too. However, the iconic fabric case for the Pixel seems to have gone now and there’s just a single official case with a translucent design. Qualcomm’s new ultraBAW RF Filter tech promises to improve your phone’s 5G and Wi-Fi 6E performance

Back in early 2020, Qualcomm had announced its ultraSAW filter technology alongside the launch of the Snapdragon X60 modem. Today, the company is expanding on the available RF Filters with the announcement of the Qualcomm ultraBAW RF filter technology for bands up to 7GHz.

Radio Frequency (RF) Filters are a fascinating piece of technology, something that we don’t actively think about but one that is crucial for the smooth functioning of our digital lives. As the name would imply, an RF Filter filters out the noise and reduces interference from external signals, ensuring that only the needed frequencies are transmitted in the best possible way. Within the context of phones and phone-adjacent mobile equipments, an RF Filter will isolate radio signals from the different spectrum bands that phones use to receive and transmit information.

Qualcomm’s previously announced ultraSAW RF filter (Surface Acoustic Wave) worked to filter frequencies from 600MHz to 2.7GHz, and offered several key features that allowed for a more efficient RF path in 5G and 4G multi-mode devices at a lower cost point, compared to competing solutions. Long story short, ultraSAW RF Filter-driven RF performance helped device makers make 5G devices with superior connectivity and battery life to consumers.

Extennsion of microacoustic filter technology

The new Qualcomm ultraBAW RF filter (Bulk Acoustic Wave) targets performance between 2.7GHz to 7.2GHz for both 5G and Wi-Fi solutions. UltraBAW also supports channels of up to 300MHz, and co-existence for 5G and/or Wi-Fi networks. For Wi-Fi, ultraBAW provides support for critical bands like 5GHz and 6GHz for Wi-Fi 6E and future Wi-Fi standards. The focus is on providing performance in the form of better transmission rates and location services, and do it power efficiently, both indoors and outdoors. UltraBAW filters use thin-film piezo material micro-acoustic technology within a small footprint and a thermal module that helps with efficiency.

The new Qualcomm ultraBAW RF filters join Qualcomm ultraSAW and numerous other RF front end components in Qualcomm Technologies’ antenna-to-modem RF solution portfolio. UltraBAW will be integrated across the company’s product line, including power amplifier modules, diversity modules, Wi-Fi (modules/extractors/filters), and discrete filters. Products enabled with Qualcomm ultraBAW filter technology are currently sampling to customers (B2B). Commercial devices featuring the technology are expected to launch in the second half of 2022.

Discord may soon let you switch accounts within the app

Discord for Android may soon let you sign in to multiple accounts, making it possible to switch between your different accounts on the fly. Right now, if you’re signed into the Discord app and want to switch to a different account, you have to first log out from your current account. But it looks like Discord for Android may soon let you sign into more than one account and easily switch between them without having to through log out and re-login exercise.

Discord 98.6 recently rolled out on the Google Play Store, and it contains some new strings that suggest that the app will make it easier to switch accounts.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Facebook could no longer be called Facebook as of next week

Facebook wants to change its company name as soon as next week, according to a new report from The Verge. The new name will reportedly reflect Facebook’s focus on building the metaverse, a concept that has quickly become a buzzword in the tech world in recent times.

Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about the name change at the upcoming annual Connect conference on October 28, but it could be revealed sooner, the report says. The rebrand will likely position Facebook as a separate product under a new parent company that also oversees other products like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. The move would be similar to what Google did back in 2015 when it set up a new parent company called Alphabet.

We will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company,” Mark Zuckerberg told The Verge back in July. He also previously said that the metaverse is “going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet.”

The report says that the new name is a closely guarded secret and is not known among even Facebook’s senior leadership.

Facebook has ramped up its efforts on building metaverse in recent months. Last summer, it set up a dedicated metaverse team. A few days ago, Facebook announced plans to hire 10,000 new people in Europe to work on metaverse. The company also recently invested $50m in funding programs and external research to help “build the metaverse responsibly.”

Facebook describes metaverse as “a set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who aren’t in the same physical space as you.”

After Google, OPPO is looking to develop its own chips

After months of leaks and rumors, Google finally unveiled its highly-anticipated Pixel 6 series yesterday. The latest Pixel phones are the first from the company to feature a custom chip, called Google Tensor. Google claims that the chip offers significant performance improvements over the one on the Pixel 5, and it also enables a wide array of AI and ML features on its latest flagships. Inspired by Google’s decision to offer custom silicon on the Pixel 6 series, OPPO is now reportedly developing its own chips.

According to Nikkei Asia, OPPO has started working on high-end mobile chips for its premium smartphones. The company aims to gain more control over core components with its custom chipset and reduce reliance on other semiconductor manufacturers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

While OPPO hasn’t revealed any details about its in-development chips so far, two people familiar with the matter told Nikkie Asia that OPPO plans to bring its custom SoC to the market by 2023 or 2024. The report further reveals that OPPO is looking to use TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process for its custom chips. Along with the SoC, OPPO is also working on custom AI algorithms and ISPs for its smartphone cameras.

It’s still a bit too early to say whether OPPO will manage to bring its custom SoCs to the market or not. Developing custom chipsets is an arduous task, so it might be a while before we hear anything official from the company. As of now, it hasn’t confirmed this revelation. In a comment on the matter, OPPO only told Nikkie Asia that “Any R&D investment is to enhance product competitiveness and user experience.”

It’s worth noting that OPPO isn’t the only Chinese OEM to develop custom SoCs. Huawei has offered custom HiSilicon Kirin chipsets on its devices for quite a while now. Xiaomi also joined the fray back in 2017, but it has switched focus to ISPs since then.
