Google’s Pixel Pass bundles key services into one subscription for U.S. Pixel 6 customers

Google has just launched the long-awaited Google Pixel 6 series. There’s a whole lot to love about both devices, but the company has been working on more than just its smartphones. The Pixel Pass is seemingly the company’s answer to Apple One with a carrier plan rolled into it as well. The difference is that you must purchase a device along with it.

Google revealed that the Pixel Pass will contain key first-party services such as Google One, Play Pass, YouTube Premium, and network coverage through Google Fi. You can sign up for it with the purchase of a new Pixel device through either the Google Fi website or the Google Store. You’ll also get an extended warranty for your new Pixel smartphone with the Pixel Pass.

The Pixel Pass is essentially an avenue to avail of ad-free YouTube, on-demand games from the Play Store, and extended cloud storage through Google Drive. It’s the ultimate Google experience for your smartphone, packing the best of Google’s services into one package. Even better, you get coverage on Google Fi too, meaning that your carrier plan is rolled into it as well.

Prices start at $45 a month for the Pixel 6 and $55 for the Pixel 6 Pro. After two years, subscribers can upgrade to a new smartphone. Customers can cancel their subscription before the end of the two-year period, but they’ll need to pay off the rest of the phone and they will lose access to their subscription services. It does not include a carrier plan by default, but you can get it via Google Fi. Google’s Pixel Pass page is live

Google Pixel 6 series comes with 5 years of software updates

Google has just launched the long-awaited Google Pixel 6 series. There’s a whole lot to love about both devices, such as both of them being the first to incorporate Google’s new Tensor chipset. With that Tensor chipset comes something even more interesting for a lot of users — five years of software updates. The Google Pixel 6 series packs five years of security patches. That means not only will it be one of the first to get Android 13 next year, but it’ll be the first to get Android 14 and Android 15 as well. After that, it will then get two more years of security patches.

Google’s support window is the longest for any Android smartphone yet, beating out update windows from the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi. Google’s smartphones get major upgrades before any other device manufacturer and also get the latest developer previews and betas of new Android versions. Google says this is “thanks to Tensor”, and that it is “at least” five years of security updates. That leaves some wiggle room for the company to extend the support window of the Pixel 6 series in the future. It’s a shame that Google doesn’t guarantee a longer support window for major updates, as some people would like to hold onto their smartphones for a long time.

Even still, security patches for five years is impressive, and still a cut above a lot of the competition. Apple’s iPhones get six years of updates, but in the Android realm, this makes the Google Pixel 6 series one of the best.

The Pro model looks identical to the regular Pixel 6 in terms of the overall design, but it packs a bigger, better display, a more versatile camera setup, and a larger battery. The Pixel 6 Pro features a bigger 6.71-inch LTPO AMOLED display with QHD+ (1400 x 3120) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The front and back are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. The phone is powered by Google’s in-house octa-core Tensor chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.1 flash storage.

While the regular Pixel 6 has a dual-camera setup, the Pro model features triple cameras on the back. The primary Samsung GN1 50MP and Sony IMX386 12MP ultra-wide cameras are the same as the regular Pixel 6 but there’s a third 48MP telephoto lens that offers up to 4x optical zoom.

The Pixel 6 Pro also has a larger 5,000mAh battery compared to the 4,600mAh cell on the regular Pixel 6. The phone supports fast charging via a 30W charger and fast wireless charging up to 23W.

On the software front, the Pixel 6 Pro runs a near-stock version of Android 12 out-of-the-box, with Google promising up to three years of OS updates and five years of security updates. Other notable highlights of the Pixel 6 Pro include stereo speakers, an under-display fingerprint reader, ultra-wideband (UWB) support, IP68 water and dust resistance, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2.

The Pixel 6 stands out from the current crop of Android smartphones with its striking two-tone design. It has an aluminum matte finish and squared-off corners. The huge camera module that covers the entire width of the back lends the Pixel 6 its unique identity and character.

The front of the Pixel 6 is occupied by a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that refreshes at 90Hz. Under the hood, the Pixel 6 is powered by Google’s in-house Tensor chip,  The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of flash storage.

The camera hardware has finally received a significant upgrade as well, as the Pixel 6 finally ditches the age-old 12.2MP Sony IMX363 sensor and opts for a brand-new 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor. The primary camera is joined by a 12MP Sony IMX386 ultra-wide sensor. As always, Google has baked plenty of camera tricks into the new Pixel to enhance your photography experience. Some of the newly introduced camera features include manual white balance adjustment, Magic Eraser, and Face Unblur.

The Pixel 6 packs a 4,600mAh battery, a step up from Pixel 5’s 4,080mAh cell. It supports up to 30W fast wired charging and 21W fast wireless charging.

The Pixel 6 is the first smartphone to ship with Android 12, with Google promising up to three years of OS updates and five years of security updates. Other highlights of the phone include an under-display fingerprint reader, IP68 dust and water resistance, stereo speakers, ultra-wideband (UWB) support, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2.

Razer launches new Seiren V2 microphones for streamers

Razer has consistently been releasing new products for gamers and streamers alike, and it’s been trying to cover more and more ground in terms of price ranges, too. A recent example was the launch of the Ripsaw X and Kiyo X, affordable versions of its video capture card and webcam, respectively. Today, Razer is announcing new microphones, the Seiren V2 Pro and V2 X.

These are successors to the original Razer Seiren Pro and Seiren X, with one being aimed at more professional streamers with a higher budget, while the other is meant for those just starting out who don’t want to spend as much.

Naturally, the Razer Seiren V2 Pro is the more impressive of the two, featuring a dynamic microphone capsule that delivers better sound quality and clarity. Plus, it has features like an analog gain limiter to prevent distortion during more intense moments (such as screaming or yelling), and a high pass filter that prevents certain low frequencies from being recorded.

Meanwhile the Seiren V2 X is still using a condenser capsule, specifically a 25mm one. It still has features like an analog gain limiter and the frequency response is the same for both models, too (20Hz to 20,000Hz). It also uses a supercardioid pattern that’s designed to only pick up the user’s voice. It does miss out on the high pass filter, however.

Aside from that, the two microphones are very similar. They have a 24-bit bit rate, shock absorber (with the Pro also having a built-in windsock for the microphone), mic monitoring via a 3.5mm headphone jack, and they connect via a USB Type-C to Type-A cable.

Samsung is one of the few manufacturers that actually tries with Android tablets. The company released its new Galaxy Tab S7 series earlier this year, including a new ‘Fan Edition’ model that serves as a mid-range alternative. Now you can get the Galaxy Tab S7 FE for $450 at multiple retail stores, a discount of $80 from the original price, and the lower-end Tab A 8.0 is also on sale again.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a 12.4-inch Android tablet, with a 2560×1600 LCD screen, a Snapdragon 750G SoC, 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage (plus an SD card slot), a 10,090mAh battery, 45W fast charging support (but the charger in the box only reaches 15W), and an S Pen stylus. The tablet ships with Android 11, and it should receive Android 12 and 13 once they become available, at the very least.

We reviewed the Galaxy Tab S7 FE when it was first released, and while it is a capable mid-range Android tablet, the original price of $530 was not competitive at all. With the current discount, the Tab S7 is now cheaper than the cheapest Apple iPad, though an iPad will still give you better performance if you’re willing to go with an iOS device.

Meanwhile, the smaller Galaxy Tab A 8.0 is once again on sale for $129.99 at Amazon, a savings of $70 from the original price. This is Samsung’s answer to the Amazon Fire Tablet series and other low-end Android tablets, but unlike Fire Tablets, this has all the Google apps and services you could want. It has a Snapdragon 429 chipset, an 8-inch 800 x 1280 display, 64GB of internal storage, and 2GB RAM. The tablet originally shipped with Android 9.0 Pie, and it can be updated to Android 11. Samsung probably won’t roll out another major update to the Galaxy Tab A 8.0, but it will continue to receive security patches for a while longer.
