Samsung will let you trade in up to 4 devices for the Galaxy Z Fold 3/Flip 3

Samsung has just launched two of its best foldables to date — the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. While the phones are more affordable than their predecessors, they’re not cheap by any means. Starting at $1,799 for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and $999 for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the phones are certainly not for everyone. However, this is Samsung’s biggest push with foldables and they’re aiming at a larger demographic this time around. As a result, there are some enticing offers that you can take advantage of if you’re planning to pick up a new foldable, including additional trade-in value.

Samsung is known to offer good trade-in value for its new flagships but with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, they’re taking it to a new level. The company is allowing you to trade in up to 4 devices with a maximum credit of $900 per device. You can get that maximum credit only on one device, though, with the other three devices getting lesser value. However, if you have 4 decent phones that aren’t too old and are in good condition, you can save a lot of money and get yourself a Galaxy Z Fold 3 or a Z Flip 3 for a big discount. Note that the trade-in values for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are higher than what you would get with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

You can head over to Samsung’s website and input the phones that you have to get the total trade-in value. Samsung will even let you trade in tablets and accessories like smartwatches so you don’t necessarily have to hunt for older phones. We tried to generate a trade-in value using a realistic scenario where one would want to trade in their Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max, an old iPad Pro, an Apple Watch Series 3, and a two-year-old Samsung Galaxy S10+. The total value for these gadgets put together is $1150. This will bring the overall price of owning a Galaxy Z Fold 3 down to just $650.

While the trade-in value isn’t extraordinary, it’s still a nice way to bring the price down a little bit while getting rid of older gadgets that you may no longer be using. Are you planning on getting yourself the Galaxy Z Fold 3? If yes, you might want to check out some of the best deals on the device in case you want to club some other offers with the trade-in benefits.

Google is rolling out a new Material You-inspired time picker UI in its Android apps

Google unveiled the latest iteration of its Material design language — Material You — at I/O earlier this year. Since then, the company has been preparing to update its apps to follow the new design language, adding new elements bit by bit. Over the last few months, we’ve spotted quite a few of these changes in Google Chrome, Google Messages, Google Contacts, and more. The company is now rolling out a Material You redesign for the time picker UI in its Android apps.

As per a recent report from 9to5Google, the new time picker UI features a more touch-friendly design. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the updated UI offers better spacing for hours and minutes fields, making them easier to tap. The AM/PM buttons also have more distinct borders around them.

When you pop open the keyboard to enter the time manually, the new UI makes better use of the available space. Instead of a large “Set time” header, the time fields now take up most of the space. The AM/PM dropdown has also been replaced with more distinct buttons. The highlight on the AM/PM buttons is also more discernable than before. The following image shows the landscape version of the new UI.

The updated time picker UI is rolling out to several Google apps over the last few weeks. It’s available in Google Search when setting Assistant Reminders, and it’s also available on Google Keep version 5.21.301.10. However, it’s yet to roll out to Google Calendar, Tasks, and Clock.

As mentioned earlier, Google has been rolling out several such Material You design changes to its apps over the last few months. You can read more about them by following this link.

Android Auto is testing a new button that surfaces recommended media to play on your drive

Android Auto will soon offer a recommended media button that will give you quick access to media suggestions based on your preferences. The new button has popped up for some users running Android Auto version 6.6.612534. It brings up a new “Media picks for your drive” window with a couple of suggestion cards.

Reddit user u/sccabrian first spotted the new button and shared the following image:

Android Auto media suggestions button 1

As you can see, the button has a music note icon, and it appears right next to the media playback controls. Tapping on it opens a “Media picks for your drive” window with suggestion cards from Spotify and the Google Assistant. Interestingly, the suggested media includes News, along with music from Spotify. The suggestions are likely based on the user’s history and preferences.

While the above image predominantly shows suggestions from Spotify, a few users in the comments of the original thread have revealed that the feature also shows suggestions from other apps. This leads us to believe that the feature will offer suggestions from the app you use the most.

The new button appears to be part of a server-side test, as it hasn’t appeared for all users running Android Auto version 6.6.612534. At the moment, we have no further details about the feature. We’ll update this post as soon as we learn more.

It’s worth noting that Google recently announced an Android Auto beta program to give users early access to new features. If you’re interested in trying out new features like this ahead of the stable rollout, you can enroll in the beta program by following this link.

Fairphone 4 gets certified with Android 11 and 5G support

Almost exactly a year ago, Dutch brand Fairphone launched the Fairphone 3+. The sustainable smartphone was pretty much the same as its predecessor, for the most part, featuring the same design and hardware. However, it made use of 40% recycled plastics and included upgraded camera hardware. Now, Fairphone is gearing up to launch its next device, the Fairphone 4, and it has been spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s website ahead of the launch.

The certification listing reveals (via WinFuture) that the device will offer 5G support and run Android 11 out of the box. While the listing doesn’t shed light on any of the device’s specifications, it does confirm that the Fairphone 4 will feature a Qualcomm SoC. Since the previous model featured the mid-range Snapdragon 632 chip, it’s fair to assume that the upcoming phone will also feature a mid-range Snapdragon 5G chipset.

At the moment, we have no further information about the Fairphone 4. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we learn more.

If you’re not familiar with the Fairphone brand, here’s a quick refresher. Fairphone is one of the few smartphone manufacturers that designs modular Android phones that are easy to repair. The company’s last release, the Fairphone 3+, featured a modular design with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 chipset, a 5.65-inch FHD+ LCD, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage. Despite its modest specifications, the device was priced at €469, with the new camera modules going for €59.95 and €34.95. You can learn more about the Fairphone 3+ by following this link.

Galaxy A52s leaks reveal Samsung’s next mid-range standard-bearer

Update 1 (08/12/2021 @ 11:58 PM ET): A new leak has shed more light on what to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy A52s. Click here for more information. The article, as published on August 5, 2021, is preserved below.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A52 5G and A52 4G in March. Nearly five months later, the South Korean smartphone giant is gearing up to add a new model to the lineup in the Galaxy A52s. The phone has been making rounds in various leaks over the past couple of weeks and recently got certified by FCC, hinting at an imminent launch. Now some newly leaked renders have given us a closer look at the phone’s design.

Twitter user @_snoopytech has shared fresh renders of the Galaxy A52s, showcasing the overall design and color options of Samsung’s upcoming mid-ranger. Quite unsurprisingly, the Galaxy A52s looks identical to the Galaxy A52, featuring a centered hole-punch display on the front and a rectangle camera module on the back that seems to house four camera sensors and an LED flash. As per the leaker, the phone will come in a single 128GB storage configuration and will be priced around €450 in Europe. Based on the renders shared by the leaker, it looks like the phone will be available in at least four colors: White, Black, Violate and Mint.

While other specs of the Galaxy A52s aren’t known, we don’t expect it to differ wildly from the current Galaxy A52 5G/4G. To recall, the Galaxy A52 comes with a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel, Snapdragon 750G (Snapdragon 720G on the 4G model), quad cameras headlined by a 64MP primary sensor, a 4,500mAh battery, stereo speakers, and an IP67 rating. The Galaxy A52s will likely pack similar hardware with some minor upgrades.

In other news, Samsung is holding its mega Galaxy Unpacked event next week where the company is set to unveil a bunch of new hardware, including new foldables — which you can already reserve for free with special early-bird offers, the Galaxy Watch 4 series, the Galaxy Buds 2 and the Galaxy S21 FE.

Update 1: Samsung Galaxy A52s specs revealed in new leak

The ever-reliable Roland Quandt over at WinFuture has cleared up some of the mystery surrounding the Galaxy A52s. We were wondering how the new phone would differ from the original Galaxy A52 series, and now we know thanks to a leak of its specifications. According to WinFuture, the Galaxy A52s has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128 or 256GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The rest of the specs remain the same as the Galaxy A52, however. That includes the camera, display, battery, charging, IP rating, and software.

According to Quandt, the A52s will be released at the end of this month at a starting price of €449. It will be available in the previously leaked black, green, blue, and purple colors.

Android 12 can show a status bar chip with the duration of an ongoing call

Update 1 (08/12/2021 @ 11:38 PM ET): The Google Phone app is rolling out support for showing a status bar chip with the duration of an ongoing call on Android 12. Click here for more information. The article, as published on June 14, 2021, is preserved below.

Android 12 Beta 2 is officially here. We have already taken a deep dive into the new software and uncovered all the new features and changes that Google has made since Beta 1. The second beta is a big step forward as it brings many of the marquee features of Android 12 to life that were hidden or work-in-progress in the previous builds. For example, the new privacy dashboard that Google showcased at Google I/O 2021 is now fully functional in Beta 2. In addition, Material You’s dynamic theming capabilities are also live, along with the new notification redesign and a revamped power menu.

Since this is beta software, after all, some features are still a work-in-progress and not user-accessible. One such in-development feature is a new status bar indicator for calls. We spotted this feature while digging into the code of Android 12 Beta 2. This feature is actually enabled by default, but since the Google Phone app doesn’t support it yet, it’s not visible to end-users. But thanks to Android developer @kdrag0n, we now have our first look at Android 12’s new ongoing call chip.

To test this feature, kdrag0n implemented the new Notification.CallStyle in his Android 12 Extensions app.

As you can see in the screenshots above, when a call is going on, and the user leaves the main calling screen, Android 12 will show a prominent chip in the status bar that shows the duration of the call. Android 11 currently doesn’t show the duration of your ongoing call in the status bar. To check the call duration, you have to either return to the main calling screen or pull down the notification tray.

As mentioned above, the new call chip feature is already supported in Beta 2. Once Google updates the Google Phone app, it should go live for everyone.

Update 1: Google Phone app adds support

Tipster @panduu221 reached out to us recently stating that they’re seeing the ongoing call chip in the status bar. The user was running Beta 3 with version 68.0.388241074-publicbeta of the Google Phone app. If you see the feature, do let us know in the comments below!

Spotify now lets you download music and podcasts to your Wear OS watch

Update 1 (08/12/2021 @ 11:19 PM ET): Following the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 series, Spotify has announced that it is rolling out an update to its Wear OS app. Click here for more information. The article, as published on May 18, 2021, is preserved below.

The future of Wear OS is set to take an unexpected turn later this year, with Google and Samsung set to collaborate on revamping the software. But before any of that happens, Spotify is showing its commitment to the platform with a welcome new feature.

During the Google I/O 2021 presentation on Tuesday, Spotify’s Jessika Malmcrona revealed that its Wear OS app will soon support the ability to download music and podcasts. This will allow users to leave their phone at home but still play audio.

“We believe that wearables will be more and more important in the future, and we see our investment in Wear as absolutely essentially for Spotify,” Malmcrona said.

Clearly, Google’s pledge to reinvigorate Wear OS has struck a chord with developers. Spotify is the largest music streaming service on the market, so seeing the company further improve its app bodes well for the future. Google said that, in general, the future of development for Wear OS will be easier.

“New tools, like a Tiles API and a watch face design editor built by Samsung, make it a breeze to develop new experiences on wearables,” Google said in a blog post. “New and rebuilt apps from developers like Strava, Adidas Running, Bitmoji and many more are coming to the platform.”

Hopefully, other developers will be inspired to re-evaluate Google’s wearable platform, potentially created greater competition for Apple’s watchOS, which is far and away the best smartwatch software available.

Google and Samsung have a history of collaborating, and the unification of Wear OS and Tizen is an exciting prospect. The search giant is already claiming that app start-up is 30% faster on the revamped platform, and battery life is also improved. The improved performance should apply to all smartwatches that run Google’s new Wear OS. OEMs will also be able to add a customized user experience on top of the platform, so it won’t just be Galaxy Watch devices that run this unified software.

Once Spotify updates its app for Wear OS with the ability to download music and podcasts, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Update 1: Spotify update rolling out

In a blog post, Spotify has announced that it is rolling out an update to its Wear OS app that brings the ability to download all of your favorite music and podcasts to your smartwatch. Premium users can download content to listen offline, while Free users can still stream content in Shuffle Mode through a WiFi or cellular connection or download podcasts directly to the watch. This feature is available by searching for the music and podcasts you want to download to your watch, tapping on “download to watch”, and waiting for the download to complete (indicated by a green arrow next to the name).

This update is rolling out to smartwatches running Wear OS 2.0 or higher over the coming weeks.
