Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Hands-on: Unpacking the future of foldables

Two years after the first Galaxy Fold was launched a second time, Samsung has unveiled the third generation of its folding flagship. Much like the early years of the Galaxy S range, we’re still in the stage of foldables where innovation comes thick and fast every year. Unlike its compatriot, which is firmly in the iterative stages of innovative improvements, this year’s Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, feels like a defining point in the range.

Rather than just software gimmicks taking center stage, there’s a host of very welcome hardware improvements, including a smaller, lighter, and thinner design, improved hinge, a massive increase in durability, the first under-display camera on a Galaxy, support for the S Pen and much more. Yet, as we’ve come to expect, the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t have all the improvements I’d have hoped to see.

Unlike previous years, there’s no Galaxy Note to take center stage, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is not One More Thing. Instead, Samsung is going all-in on foldables in a huge way, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is its flagship for the second half of the year. The headliner in a dedicated Unpacked event that also featured the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4, and Galaxy Buds 2, Samsung is banking on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to continue its dominance in smartphone innovation.

Does it deliver? We’ll reserve final judgment for our full review, which is coming soon, but for now, our initial impression is that Samsung might just have a winner on its hands. Here’s our hands-on preview after spending an hour with Samsung’s new flagship.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Design: Thinner, Slimmer and Lighter

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 with leather case on

The original Galaxy Fold reminded me of the Nokia E90 Communicator in that it was an absolute tank. That means it was big and heavy and that heft gave it a reassuring bulk that’s been missing from smartphones for many years. To be fair, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra both delivered in the heft department, but as smartphones began getting slimmer almost 10 years ago — a few years after the launch of the original iPhone — that reassuring feel in hand disappeared rather quickly.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 takes us further in that direction by being slimmer, lighter, and narrower than the Galaxy Z Fold 2, without compromising on the core essence of the foldable form factor. Most of this thinner form factor can be attributed to the improved hideaway hinge, which makes the overall device a bit thinner and closer to the thickness expected from a modern flagship.

Top-down view of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and previous generations, partially folded

Galaxy Fold vs. Z Fold 2 vs. Galaxy Z Fold 3

Folded, it’s 16mm thick, while unfolded, it’s 6.4mm thick. Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, it’s 4.5% thinner when folded, and 8% thinner when unfolded. This might seem like small margins, but as Samsung improves the form factor with each generation, improvements in the heft of the device will become more important. Compared to non-folding phones, it’s 28% thinner than the Galaxy S21 Ultra when unfolded — 6.4mm vs. 8.9mm — and ~14% thinner than the iPhone 12 Pro Max — 6.4mm vs. 7.4mm. Granted, at 16mm when folded, it’s definitely still a bulky device, but as it keeps getting slimmer and more refined, Samsung will settle on the magic dimensions that make it acceptable to most users.

On the weight side, it’s definitely still the heaviest of smartphones out there, which is unsurprising given it unfolds to a fully functional mini-tablet. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 weighs in at 271 grams, which is 4% lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 2 (283 grams). Beyond foldables, it’s 19% heavier than both the Galaxy S21 Ultra (227 grams) and the iPhone 12 Pro Max (228 grams). Yes, it’s heavier, but given the additional screen (and the less-than-stellar cameras in comparison), this weight balances out very well, and presumably, a foldable iPhone would end up weighing in at a similar number.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Displays: improved yet virtually identical

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 unfolded with display on

Beyond these minuscules yet noticeable differences, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is much like its predecessor in that it has a fully functional HD+ Dynamic AMOLED cover display that measures 6.2 inches, and when you unfold it, the main display measures 7.6 inches with QXGA+ resolution. Samsung already makes the best displays on the market, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 looks as good as any other Samsung display.

The refresh rate changes are immediately noticeable and a welcome improvement

The main display measures the same 7.6 inches as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and sports the same 2208 x 1768 pixels resolution. The difference between the two displays isn’t noticeable, although the test will come with things like multitasking which we’ll cover in the full review.

The cover display is also almost identical but slightly narrower at 6.2 inches vs 6.23 inches last year. The aspect ratio is almost identical at 24.5:9 vs 25:9 last year, which is a good thing as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 front display is a joy to use and mostly perfect for one-handed use. During the past year, I’ve used the front display with one hand almost as much as I used the main display with two hands, so I expect the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be just as good, if not slightly easier to use with one hand thanks to the slightly narrower design.

While the displays are virtually identical on paper, the big difference comes in actual usage with both the cover display and the main display, now supporting a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Much like the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the rest of the S21 series, and other Samsung devices that came before it, this means the refresh rate changes based upon the content being shown.

S-Pen Pro in action

Even though we only spent a little time with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the difference in the refresh rate is immediately noticeable on both the cover display and the main display. Scrolling is far smoother and the overall experience on the phone feels buttery smooth, making the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s displays look jittery in comparison. Bumping up to 120Hz refresh rate isn’t a game-changer by any stretch of the imagination, but Samsung would be (rightfully) lambasted if it hadn’t made this spec bump.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Hardware: Finally, a durable foldable

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 folded with display on

If you’d have asked me six months ago what I wanted from the Z Fold 3, there were probably three things I would have asked for: an S Pen (check), vastly improved durability (check), and better cameras. The durability of the Z Fold 3 — and the Z Flip 3 — most definitely checks this box. The key improvements lie in improved aluminum in the hideaway hinge, the same Gorilla Glass Victus found on the Z Fold 2, and IPX8 durability, meaning it’s waterproof.

The Armor Aluminum is apparently 10% stronger than the aluminum used in previous smartphones and the hideaway hinge has been made thinner than last year’s models to ensure there are even fewer areas for dust to get underneath the display. There’s also a change in the type of display material used for the main display, with a new flexible and stretchable PET layer replacing the TPU screen material used last year. Samsung says that all of these changes have resulted in a massive 80% increase in the durability of the main display and it’s so confident that the Z Fold 3 no longer comes with a discounted screen repair as part of the Galaxy Z Premier service.

Samsung Galaxy Fold, Z Fold 2, and Z Fold 3

Likely the durability is helped by the addition of IPX8 water resistance. Without a doubt, this was the biggest addition I was hoping for in this next generation of foldables. For the past two years, I’ve tried to ensure I never used either the Fold or Z Fold 2 in any form of rain and while both devices survived unintentional exposure to random downpours, it also meant neither was completely suitable as the only phone I carried. The addition of IPX8 to this year’s models means they should be as durable from a water perspective as any other flagship smartphone.

Beyond the vast improvements in durability, you also have a flagship specs list, as you’d expect from a smartphone that costs $1,799 and upwards. The Snapdragon 888 processor powers the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage. The whole package is powered by a 4,400 mAh battery and supports charging up to 25W when wired or up to 10W wirelessly. There’s also reverse wireless charging up to 4.5W, which is ideal for charging accessories like the Galaxy Buds 2 or Galaxy Watch 4.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 S Pen: Two new flavors, with important differences

Galaxy Z Fold 3 folded halfway with an S-Pen Pro nearby

The other major addition to the Galaxy Fold line-up this year is the S Pen. Unlike previous years where the Galaxy Z Fold would be the final addition to an Unpacked event featuring the Galaxy Note, there’s no Note this year. Instead, Samsung has expanded S Pen support to other devices, such as the Galaxy S21, and finally brought it to its flagship foldable. Alongside durability, this was one of the things I was hoping to see added to the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The S Pen Pro lets you copy and paste between devices using just the Pen

Yet, it’s not quite as clear-cut as the Galaxy Note range. There are actually two S Pens compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 3 doesn’t support the S Pen. The S Pen Fold Edition effectively acts as the S Pen on the Galaxy Note range a few years ago and only supports basic writing input and button pressing when connected to the device. It doesn’t slot into the Z Fold 3 in any way, with Samsung instead offering a special case that also features a place to house the S Pen Fold Edition.

Then there’s the S Pen Pro, which Samsung is considering as its flagship stylus. Compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, it’s also the only S Pen that’s compatible with every other device that supports the S Pen. It’s considered the master global solution, and as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 operates at a different frequency to other S Pens thanks to the Wacom layer sandwiched in the display, it has a switch that lets you choose which device you’re trying to control.

The S Pen Pro offers all the Bluetooth-powered bells and whistles we’ve come to expect from the S Pen, including air gestures. There’s also onboard memory and a very neat feature that lets you copy on one device and paste on another S Pen compatible device using nothing but the S Pen Pro. This means you could copy something on your Galaxy Z Fold 3 and then paste it using the S Pen connected to your Galaxy Tab S7+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, or Galaxy Chromebook. If you’re all-in on the Samsung ecosystem, this is a nifty feature, and the global compatibility means you also only need one S Pen for all of your devices.

A warning saying Note 20 S-Pen should not be used on Z Fold 3

Fold 3 displays a warning when you try to use a noncompatible S Pen.

The S Pen Pro supports charging through a USB-C port in the tip, and like the S Pen Fold Edition, it features a retractable tip to prevent you from damaging the Z Fold 3’s main display by pressing too hard. This retractable tip, plus the difference in frequency, is also why these two S Pen are the only ones compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3; not even the Galaxy S21 S Pen that was launched as a standalone accessory earlier this year is compatible.

Does this mean the Galaxy Note lineup is gone forever? That’s uncertain, with Samsung holding steadfast that there’ll be a new Galaxy Note next year. However, if a lot of Galaxy Note users end up buying the Z Fold 3 and S Pen Pro as it supports all the same features, then it’s definitely possible the Galaxy Note lineup will end up being retired. Regardless, with both the Galaxy S21 series and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 now supporting the S Pen, there seems to be very little need for a standalone device where the main purpose is an S Pen housed inside the device.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Camera: A new Under Display Camera isn’t enough

Back of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 showing camera

On paper, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has acceptable cameras, but to just look at the cameras on their own doesn’t tell the whole picture. Instead, when considering the cameras compared to the industry as a whole, it becomes the area of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 I’m most disappointed by.

When the original Galaxy Fold came out, it offered three cameras that were close to on-par with Samsung’s own flagships as well as most other devices. However, a year later, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 barely improved the cameras while the industry as a whole moved on. Despite the presence of 100X zoom, 100MP+ cameras, and 4 or more cameras now standard on the best devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 still retains the three 12MP cameras found on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It’s a real shame the cameras haven’t been improved much, although we couldn’t really test them in this controlled environment, so we’ll reserve our judgment for the full review.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

That said, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 does bring a first for the Galaxy lineup — the new Under Display Camera (UDC). The UDC is on the main display and has been designed with video calls in mind, with Samsung itself saying the 10MP selfie camera on the Cover display is designed for taking selfies. Samsung says it opted for a UDC as it fit the use-case for the main display. Most people who buy the foldable range use the cover display’s camera for selfies and the main display’s cameras for video calls.

On paper, the UDC shouldn’t be very good as it’s only a 4MP sensor, but Samsung is using AI to improve the overall quality of the image. There are still pixels above the cameras – in a 4×4 array – and Samsung is using translucent wiring so the camera can see through the pixel. It then uses AI to enhance the image, hoping it can deliver better than 4MP quality photos. Considering a 4MP can deliver QHD resolution on paper, it should suffice for most video calls, although we’ll need to wait until the full review to be able to test this.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Software: Optimization is the name of the game

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 used with two apps

One of the reasons I absolutely love the Galaxy Z Fold range is that Samsung really understands productivity and how to make software that takes advantage of the unique form factor. After more than ten years of perfecting features such as multi-window and Edge panel on the Galaxy Note range, it found the perfect home for all of these in its flagship foldable.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 brings all the same software features from the Galaxy Z Fold 2, including multi-window, the ability to put three windows side-by-side and have more in pop-up chat heads, and native support for things like media players where the video appears on one side of the screen and the controls appear on the other.

This year, there are further optimizations. The Edge Panel can be pinned like the Windows taskbar, so your favorite apps, and app pairs, are always easily accessible. Samsung’s native app windows can also be resized, and likely any developer can also enable support for this. There are also changes so that when you have two apps side-by-side and click on a link in one of them, it opens on the other side of the screen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Flex Mode

Most importantly is the ability to optimize apps even when the developer hasn’t done so. Take Instagram, for example – the app hasn’t been updated to support the unconventional aspect ratios of the screens, and the result was a horrible experience where a story you posted appeared different from how it was viewed on other phones. With the labs feature, you can force apps to conform to a specific aspect ratio or even take them full-screen, meaning you have more granular control over how things work on your phone.

Another example is Netflix, which doesn’t support the foldable experience. The Labs feature allows you to ensure it still works in multi-window and other areas it doesn’t natively support. Labs also lets you force apps to use the Flex mode panel so if you enable it for Netflix for example, the phone will split the controls to one side of the screen and the media to another. These are all features that used to be available in Samsung Good Lock but are now native to One UI.

Beyond these improvements, Samsung has also worked closely with Google and Microsoft to ensure that certain top apps support the next generation of experiences. YouTube and Google Duo have been further optimized to offer dual-screen, drag and drop, and resizable windows. The Microsoft suite of Office apps now all support multi-window annotations using the S Pen and drag and drop between the apps so you can select a chart in Powerpoint and drag it over to Office to paste it into a word document. Samsung has also worked directly with developers to optimize the top 50 apps to support these foldable-specific experiences.

Galaxy Z Fold 3: A compelling first impression

Z Fold 3 cover screen

For the past two years, I’ve been all-in on foldables. I firmly believe we’re witnessing firsthand the future of smartphones and beyond. I’ve used the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Flip, RAZR, Huawei’s Mate Xs, and even Lenovo’s folding laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Fold. Trust me when I say the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the most mature foldable on the market, at least based on my first impressions.

I've used both the Fold and Fold 2 religiously, and the Z Fold 3 has me more excited than any other smartphone

As we saw with the original Galaxy Fold, however, the real proof is in the review. Given how durable the revamped Fold and the Z Fold 2 were for me, coupled with all the changes Samsung has made to vastly improve the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 suggests it can deliver on its abundance of promise. Yet, at a starting price of $1,799, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the most expensive smartphone you can buy today and not much cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which started at $1,980. Despite this huge price tag, you don’t get a charger in the box; charging tops out at 25W wired, and this is slow charging compared to where the industry as a whole is.

Will the cameras be good enough in a world where the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s cameras were already lagging behind? Is Samsung’s first attempt at an under-display camera good enough to serve its primary aim of having great video calls? Is the new slightly reduced price tag enough to result in the widespread adoption of what is still a very expensive smartphone?

These are some of the questions that remain unanswered, but for now, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has left an incredible first impression, and I’m more excited than I was even for the past two generations.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 bring several improvements at a more affordable price

Samsung today lifted the covers off its latest foldable smartphones — the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, alongside the new Galaxy Buds 2, Galaxy Watch 4 series, and the S Pen Pro. The new foldable smartphones feature several improvements over their predecessors, including design changes, durability improvements, and, of course, new hardware. Here’s a brief overview of Samsung’s latest foldables.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the third smartphone in Samsung’s flagship foldable lineup. While it isn’t as big of an improvement as the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was over the original Fold, it does bring some significant changes to the table. For starters, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a bit smaller, slimmer, and lighter than the Z Fold 2, and it features a more rounded frame. It has a simpler camera island design on the back, it’s the first foldable phone to come with IPX8 certification for water resistance, and it has a more durable build.

Along with the minor design changes, Samsung has also equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with newer hardware. The phone packs a 6.2″ 120Hz HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display over on the front, a massive 7.6″ 120Hz QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED display on the inside, Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip, 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 standing upright on the floor

Samsung hasn’t made any major changes to the rear camera setup on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It features the same triple camera setup as its predecessor, comprising of a 12MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP 2x telephoto camera. Over on the cover screen, it has the same 10MP selfie shooter as the Fold 2. However, its inner selfie camera has received a significant improvement. Instead of a 10MP sensor, the inner selfie camera now uses a 4MP sensor, and it’s housed underneath the display. This makes the Galaxy Z Fold 3 the first phone from Samsung to feature an under-screen camera sensor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 open full in hand

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 still features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a USB Type-C port. It packs a stereo speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support, a 4,400mAh battery, 25W wired fast charging support, 10W wireless fast charging support, and 5G capabilities (Sub6+mmWave). The phone runs Samsung’s One UI skin based on Android 11 out of the box, which comes with a few additional features to help you make the most of the folding form factor.

As seen in previous leaks, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 also features S Pen support. Samsung has launched two S Pen models for the device — the S Pen Pro and the S Pen Fold Edition. The S Pen Fold Edition is a compact stylus that supports air gestures, button input, and more. On the other hand, the S Pen Pro is an active stylus that offers additional Bluetooth functionality, copy/paste support between devices using the onboard memory, and more.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 colors: Green, Black, Silver

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 comes in three colorways — Phantom Black, Phantom Green, and Phantom Silver — and it’ll go on sale starting from August 27th. The device will be available at a starting price of $1,799 in the US. Samsung will also offer a Thom Browne edition of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the third compact foldable from Samsung that offers a clamshell design. It too, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, brings several minor improvements over its predecessor. Starting with the design, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a bit more compact than the Z Flip 5G. It features a 4x larger cover screen, and it’s more durable, thanks to the Armor Aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus on the back.

Much like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 also comes with upgraded displays. On the outside, the phone features a 1.9 inch Super AMOLED cover screen, which is four times bigger than the one found on the previous model. The bigger screen can display up to four lines, it now has 6 useful widgets, and can also be customized to match the Galaxy Watch watch face.

On the inside, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 features a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display that offers a peak refresh rate of 120Hz and adaptive refresh rate support. The inner display has a resolution of 2640 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of 425 PPI. Unlike the Z Fold 3, the Flip model features a hole-punch cutout on the main display for the selfie camera.

As with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Samsung hasn’t made any changes to the camera setup on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It still features a dual-camera setup on the back, consisting of a 12MP primary camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP selfie camera on the inside. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 chip, coupled with 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 also packs a stereo speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing. The phone packs a 3,300mAh dual-cell battery that supports 25W wired fast charging. On the software front, the device runs Android 11 out of the box with Samsung One UI on top. It also comes with a couple of additional software features to help you make the most of the foldable display.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 comes in seven color schemes — Phantom Black, Cream, Green, Lavender, Gray, White, and Pink — but the Gray, White and Pink variants are Samsung.com exclusives. The device is priced starting at $999 in the US, and it will go on sale from August 27th. Samsung will also offer a Thom Browne edition of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Everything you need to know about Samsung’s latest foldable flagship

Samsung launched its first foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, back in 2019. Although the company showcased the phone early in the year, it took quite a while to hit the market due to an unfortunate series of events. Samsung re-launched the phone with some improvements later in the year, but it still had a fair few flaws. A year later, Samsung launched its successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which addressed some major issues. Thanks to the improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 went on to become the best foldable phone of 2020. Samsung’s latest foldable flagship, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, is now finally here, and it brings several improvements over its predecessor.

The all-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 features an updated design and the latest flagship hardware, yet it’s a bit more affordable than the Galaxy Z Fold 2. That’s one of the main reasons we believe many more people will be interested in getting one for themselves. If you’re interested in picking one up and want to know all about the device before hitting the buy button, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, we’ll share everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to help you make an informed decision. Let’s kick things off by taking a look at its specifications.

Design & Build

The Samsung Galaxy Z fold 3 features several small improvements on the design front. The phone is a bit smaller, slimmer, and lighter than its predecessor. It has a more rounded frame, which should make it a bit more comfortable to hold. And it features a new camera module design. The phone’s folding mechanism looks to be the same as the one found on the previous model, but Samsung has somehow managed to make it thinner and water-tight. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first foldable phone to offer IPX8 water resistance.

Along with the IPX8 certification, Samsung has made a couple of other changes in the latest Fold to make it a bit more durable. The phone features an “Armor Aluminum” frame that Samsung claims is 10% stronger than before, Gorilla Glass Victus on the outer display and back panel, and a new protective film for the inner screen that’s 80% more durable than the older model.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also comes with one other noteworthy change. Instead of a hole-punch camera on the inner display, Samsung has included an under-display camera sensor on the latest Fold, making it the first phone from the company to feature the new technology. Sure, the camera sensor itself isn’t anything extraordinary, but we’re glad that Samsung has finally jumped on the under-screen camera bandwagon, and we can’t wait to see what the company has in store for us for its upcoming Galaxy S series lineup.

Displays

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 features a 6.2-inch outer display with a resolution of 2268 x 832 pixels and 387PPI pixel density. Although it has the same dimensions and resolution as the outer display on the Z Fold 2, Samsung has included some improvements on the newer model.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 folded shut

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 uses a 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED panel for the outer screen instead of a 60Hz AMOLED panel and offers adaptive refresh rate support. Additionally, the outer screen gets Gorilla Glass Victus protection.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 with S Pen

On the inside, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 features a massive 7.6-inch with a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels and 374PPI pixel density. It’s a flexible Dynamic AMOLED panel with a 120Hz peak refresh rate and adaptive refresh rate support. It’s pretty much the same panel as the one on the Z Fold 2, but it has a redesigned protective layer on top that makes it 80% more durable than before. Furthermore, the inner screen is now 29% brighter than the one on the previous model.

SoC, RAM, & Storage

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a flagship device and, as such, it packs Qualcomm’s latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 chipset. The 5nm SoC includes one Kryo 680 prime core (ARM Cortex X1-based) clocked at 2.84GHz, three Kryo 680 performance cores (ARM Cortex A78-based) clocked at 2.4GHz, and four Kryo 680 efficiency cores (ARM Cortex A55-based) clocked at 1.8GHz. It also includes an Adreno 660 GPU.

The Snapdragon 888 on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is paired with 12GB of LPDDR(?) RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1  storage. Unfortunately, the phone doesn’t have a dedicated microSD card slot for expansion, so make sure you purchase the higher-end 512GB variant if you need the extra storage.

Cameras

As previous reports suggested, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 doesn’t feature an overkill camera system like the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Instead, Samsung has opted for a more modest camera setup on the device, presumably to keep the camera module relatively slim. Interestingly, the rear camera setup is one of the few areas where Samsung hasn’t introduced any improvements. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 retains the same triple camera setup as its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 laid out on a leather table

The phone features a 12MP f/1.8 primary camera with Dual Pixel Auto-focus and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 123° field of view, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with PDAF, Dual OIS, 2x optical zoom, and 10x digital zoom.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Phantom Black half open

Another thing that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has in common with the Fold 2 is that it has two selfie cameras. The phone features a 10MP f/2.2 selfie shooter housed within a hole-punch cutout on the outer display and a 4MP f/1.8 sensor on the inside. But unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the inner selfie camera on Samsung’s latest flagship foldable is placed under the display. This explains why Samsung went with a lower megapixel count for the inner selfie camera. The under-screen camera is placed at the top of the right half of the inner display.

Battery & Charging

Another area where Samsung hasn’t made any improvements is the battery. In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 features a slightly smaller 4,400mAh dual-cell battery, while the Fold 2 featured a 4,500mAh unit. But that’s to be expected, as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a bit more compact than the older model.

As far as charging is concerned, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 features 25W wired fast charging support and 10W wireless charging support. But you’ll need to purchase a 25W charger separately, as the phone only comes with a USB Type-C to Type-C cable in the box.

Connectivity

Thanks to the integrated 5G modem on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 offers 5G support. It supports both Sub6 and mmWave 5G (SA/NSA). It also features 4G LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2. Other connectivity options include a USB Type-C port and NFC.

S Pen Support

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is Samsung’s first foldable to offer S Pen support. It features a Wacom layer for Universal Stylus support, and it supports both the new S Pen Pro and the S Pen Fold Edition. While Samsung had mentioned the S Pen Pro during the Galaxy S21 series launch event earlier this year, the S Pen Fold Edition is a completely new product.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 with S Pen

The S Pen Fold Edition is smaller, more compact, and can be stored with the phone using a compatible case. It supports writing input, air gestures, off-screen memos, etc., but it isn’t an active stylus like the Pro variant. The stylus features a retractable tip to prevent damage to the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s inner display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 S Pen Case with S Pen

On the other hand, the S Pen Pro is a bit larger and offers a host of additional features. It’s an active stylus that can be charged via the USB Type-C port on the top, and it supports Bluetooth controls, air gestures, a new copy/paste functionality using the onboard storage, device switching, and more. It also features a retractable tip like the S Pen Fold Edition.

It’s worth noting that the S Pen Fold Edition is only compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and it won’t work with older Samsung smartphones. That’s because it operates at a different frequency. However, the S Pen Pro is backward compatible.

One UI

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs Android 11 out of the box with Samsung’s One UI skin on top. It offers all the features you get with Android 11, along with a couple of extras that will help you make the most of the foldable display. These include UX  optimizations for Samsung’s stock apps, the option to pin Edge Panels to the screen for easier access to apps, optimizations for split-screen view, etc.

In addition, Samsung has included a couple of S Pen-specific features in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 as well. When using the S Pen Fold Edition with the phone in Flex Mode, you can press the button on the S Pen and double-tap the screen to open up the Notes app.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 used with two apps

In the Browser app, you can use the S Pen to text feature to directly write within the address bar to perform a search. Furthermore, when writing with the S Pen, you can correct incorrect spacing between letters with an “attach” gesture, delete words by striking them out, and draw a “V” between words to add a space.

Other noteworthy features include Cover Screen mirroring, an open pop-up window at location gesture, a multiview mode for several apps, picture-in-picture mode, and an easy swap button.

Along with the One UI optimizations, Samsung has partnered with app developers to optimize their apps for the foldable form factor. Apps like Spotify, TikTok, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Google Chrome, YouTube, and Google Duo will have an optimized layout for the foldable display. Samsung plans to add more apps to the mix going forward.

Samsung S Pen Pro: Everything you need to know about Samsung’s ultimate stylus

During the launch of the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year, Samsung announced support for the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Samsung had also announced it will be launching an S Pen Pro later this year that will bring additional functionality to the S Pen. While we hadn’t heard about it in months, Samsung has now finally launched the S Pen Pro alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 at its Unpacked event. Since the Note line-up has now been officially discontinued, the S Pen Pro can be a great accessory for people who take notes or sketch on their device. If you’re one of them and are planning to pick up the new S Pen Pro, here’s everything you need to know about it.

S Pen Pro: Price

S-Pen Pro (left) and S-Pen Fold Edition (right)

The Samsung S Pen Pro is a universal tool that can be used across multiple devices and comes with some nifty features that make it pricier than the regular S Pen that Samsung offers. The S Pen Pro will be available to purchase for a price of $XX. While it’s higher compared to the normal S Pen, you get additional features that can make it worth it depending on your kind of usage and requirements.

Release Date

S-Pen Pro

The S Pen Pro, just like most products announced at the Unpacked event will go on sale starting August 27th. This is several months after Samsung first revealed the S Pen Pro. If you’ve been waiting all this time to pick one up, it’s finally time to do so.

S Pen Pro: Specs and Features

Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an S-Pen Pro

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 has a separate Wacom layer underneath the screen that allows users to use a universal stylus like the S Pen Pro (though there are good reasons why you should stick with Fold-compatible styluses with the Fold). The keyword here for the purposes of the S Pen Pro is a universal stylus.

The S Pen Pro is going to be compatible not only with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 but also with other Samsung devices that have a special digitizer on the display that supports stylus input. This includes the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+, Galaxy Book, and future Galaxy devices as well. The S Pen Pro can operate at two different frequencies which makes it compatible with older as well as newer devices. The conventional S Pen from the Note series operates at a different frequency which is unsupported by newer devices like the Z Fold 3.

S-Pen Pro in action on the Z Fold 3

The S Pen Pro has a 0.7mm precision tip with 4,096 pressure points. Artists and graphic designers will appreciate this fact since more pressure points mean better precision and control while using the S Pen Pro. The stylus has been designed in a way that it can be used on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 without damaging the screen, as the tip will retract back into the casing of the device if you apply too much pressure.

Unlike the older S Pen that Samsung launched with the Galaxy S21 Ultra or the S Pen Fold Edition, the Pro has Bluetooth connectivity. It connects to your phone and gives you extra controls along with features like on-screen gestures, air gestures, and even the ability to connect to multiple devices at once and switch between them seamlessly. There’s also onboard memory on the stylus which will allow you to copy something on one device and paste it on another device. This is something that will surely improve your workflow. The S Pen Pro charges via a USB-C port, so you can just use the cable that came with the phone/tablet to charge the stylus as well.

Size and Weight

The tips of the S-Pen Pro and S-Pen Fold Edition

The S Pen we’ve been seeing through the years with the Note series has been relatively small and could easily fit into the body of the phone itself. While the S Pen Fold Edition is similar to that, without the ability to be stored inside the phone, of course, the S Pen Pro is considerably larger. It resembles a typical writing instrument like a pen and is not really meant to be stored along with the phone.

The S Pen Pro weighs in at 14g compared to the 8g on the Fold Edition stylus. Samsung will also sell a case that can house the S Pen Fold Edition but there’s nothing like that for the Pro version since it’s bigger. It can however magnetically attach to some devices.

S Pen Pro: Compatible Devices

S Pen Pro: Who is it for?

S-Pen Pro and S-Pen Fold Edition

If you’re a digital artist or you take down a lot of notes, and you own a Galaxy Tab/Book from Samsung that supports the S Pen Pro and you’re also getting the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the S Pen Pro might prove to be beneficial to you. If you’re just going to be getting the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and you don’t have any of the other devices, the Pro version might be overkill for you and you should be just fine with a standard Fold version S Pen.
