YouTube will pay you up to $10,000/m to make YouTube Shorts

In September last year, YouTube launched its TikTok competitor, Shorts, in India. The feature rolled out in the US in beta earlier this year, with a worldwide release following in July. Although YouTube Shorts is now available in over 100 countries, it hasn’t managed to gain the same amount of traction as its competitors, TikTok and Instagram Reels. To encourage more people to create for the platform, YouTube has set up a $100 million fund, and it will pay creators up to $10,000 per month for creating short videos for the platform.

We first learned about this $100 million fund back in May this year. But, at the time, YouTube hadn’t shared any details about the program. Now, YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, Neal Mohan, has revealed more information. In a recent episode of The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Mohan revealed that YouTube plans to start the payments this month, and creators have the opportunity to earn up to $10,000 per month for making YouTube Shorts. However, there are some caveats.

According to The Verge“The popularity needed to earn money will depend on just how many people are making and watching Shorts each month, and payouts will also depend on where each creator’s audience is located.” Creators are also required to post original videos to be eligible for a payout, and reuploads or videos tagged with watermarks from other platforms will disqualify their channel for payments. At the moment, YouTube has extended the program to 10 regions, including the US, US, India, and Brazil, among others, with plans to expand to other regions in the future.

YouTube will use the fund to pay creators throughout the next year and eventually replace the Shorts Fund with a “long-term, scalable monetization program.” The company doesn’t plan on running ads on YouTube Shorts, so it remains to be seen how it will generate revenue from the platform.

ASUS ZenFone 7 update brings the Android 12-like one-handed mode from ZenUI 8

ASUS is rolling out a new software update to the ZenFone 7 and ZenFone 7 Pro. The latest update brings along new security patches, fixes bugs, and adds a new Android 12-like one-handed mode.

The update, v30.41.69.89, has started rolling out to the ZenFone 7 family. The most notable change in the latest software is the newer one-handed mode which debuted on the ZenFone 8 series. This version of the one-handed mode looks and behaves a lot like the one-handed mode we saw in Android 12, allowing you to swipe down near the bottom of the screen to bring the screen down.

One-handed mode isn’t actually new to ZenUI or to the ZenFone 7 series, though. Before the Android 11 update, the ZenFone 7 series had ASUS’ older one-handed mode implementation. It was triggered via a double-tap of the home button or from the Quick Setting panel and shrunk the screen both horizontally and vertically — as opposed to the new Android 12-like implementation, which only shrinks vertically.

Check out the new one-handed mode demo in ZenUI 8 from Mishaal’s ZenFone 8 review below. And you can see how closely it resembles Android 12’s one-handed mode here.

Apart from the new one-handed mode, the ZenFone 7 update also addresses video freezing when shooting in 4K 60fps, lag and frame drops in games, and the weather app not syncing properly.

WhatsApp prepares to enable end-to-end encryption for local backups too

WhatsApp has been rolling out new features left and right in a renewed push to catch up with Telegram. Over the last month, the Facebook-owned company has added several useful additions to its instant messaging app, such as new options for sending high-quality photos and videos, multi-device support, a new calling UI for group calls, and auto-expiring media. WhatsApp also recently started testing end-to-end encryption for cloud backups, and now they’re preparing to expand this to local backups.

Although WhatsApp has offered end-to-end encryption for chats since 2014, both cloud and local chat backups are exempt from it. That finally changed when WhatsApp began testing end-to-end encryption support for backups stored on Google Drive and iCloud. And now WABetainfo reports that WhatsApp is looking to apply the same level of encryption to locally stored backups.

End-to-end encryption will prevent unauthorized access to your chat history and media. WhatsApp will ask you to set a password to encrypt your cloud and local backups. You can also generate a 64-bit encryption key instead of a password. The next time when you restore your WhatsApp chats from Google Drive or local backup, you’ll need to enter this password/encryption key.

A word of caution, though: if you lose your phone, encryption key, or forgot your password, you won’t be able to restore your backup, and WhatsApp can’t help you either as the password/encryption key is entirely private and not shared with WhatsApp, Google, Facebook or Apple.

End-to-end encryption for cloud and local backups hasn’t been rolled out to WhatsApp users at large. Last month, WhatsApp attempted a limited rollout of encrypted cloud backups with beta users but temporarily halted it due to connection issues. We’ll be sure to let you know once end-to-end encryption for the cloud and local backups start rolling out widely.

DotOS teases a new Android 12-like theming system for its next release

Developers behind the DotOS (short for Droid on Time) custom ROM project have teased a new Android 12-based dynamic theming engine for their upcoming release. The new system succeeds the team’s “MonetWannabe” feature, their previous attempt at a wallpaper-based theming system which is currently available in DotOS 5.1. As we explained back in April, the developers of DotOS made “MonetWannabe” by “cod[ing] the whole framework from scratch after carefully reversing Google’s implementation in Android 12 and tweaking the underlying algorithms for better flexibility.”

Since the release of “MonetWannabe” in DotOS 5.1, Google released Android 12 Beta 2 and 3, both of which contain their official “monet” theming system. For context, Google’s new dynamic theming engine code-named “monet” generates color palettes based on the colors extracted from your wallpaper, and it then applies those colors to various parts of the system UI and any apps that support it. It’s a major part of Google’s new Material You design language and is one of the most exciting new features of Android 12.

Shortly after the release of Android 12 Beta 2, developer kdrag0n recreated the “monet” theming system from scratch and published the source code for his work. Developer Quinny899 then created a support library based on kdrag0n’s work, dubbed “MonetCompat.” This is what DotOS’s new theming engine is based on — the custom ROM seems to be applying the MonetCompat library to system apps.


The current “MonetWannabe” theming system in DotOS only recolors some parts of the system UI — mainly the Quick Settings panel. With “MonetCompact,” however, DotOS will extend dynamic theming support to more parts of the system, including various Settings pages, the “About phone” screen, the floating volume panel, and more. The team says the new Battery Manager and the OTA app will also be updated to support dynamic colors. Here are some screenshots showing the new wallpaper-based dynamic theming system in action.

The new Android 12-based theming system will be available in the upcoming DotOS 5.2 release. Once it becomes available, users can enable the new theme engine under Settings > Customizations and selecting “Wallpaper Colors”. There’s no ETA for when the team plans to release the new builds of DotOS with the revamped dynamic theming engine, but as always, it’s good etiquette to not ask for an ETA when one isn’t provided.

WhatsApp is rolling out its “View Once” disappearing media feature to everyone

Last year we learned that WhatsApp was working on an auto-expiring media feature that would allow users to send photos and videos that disappear automatically once viewed. Earlier in June, WhatsApp started testing the feature with a small set of users. After spending over a month in beta testing, the auto-expiring media feature is finally going live for all users.

In a blog post on Tuesday, WhatsApp announced the wider rollout of the “View Once” feature. As the name suggests, the feature lets users send a photo or a video that disappears after the recipient opens it once. Media sent with the View Once feature won’t be saved in the recipient’s gallery and can only be viewed once. Similarly, you also can’t star or forward a disappearing photo/video. If you don’t open a disappearing message within 14 days, it will automatically expire.

The View Once feature comes quite handy if you want to share something sensitive like a password, for example. However, WhatsApp notes that recipients can still take screenshots or a screen recording before the media expires, so users are still advised to be careful when sharing something sensitive.

When sharing a photo or video with someone, you will see a small “View Once” icon beside the send button. When you tap on it, a pop-up appears on the screen that reads “Photo set to view once.” The View Once icon at the bottom also turns green to indicate that you’re sharing disappearing media. Of course, WhatsApp is not the first to offer a disappearing media feature; it’s merely catching up to Telegram and Instagram in this regard.

Vivaldi update adds a “stay in browser” option and lets you turn off tab groups

Towards the end of last month, the developers behind the popular Vivaldi browser rolled out version 4.1 of the browser for desktop. The update introduced several new features, including Accordion tabs, Command Chains, and more. The developers are now rolling out a similar update for Vivaldi on Android. Here’s everything new in the latest update for the Android version of the browser:

Vivaldi 4.1 for Android brings a new setting that lets you open external links within the browser. The setting, called “Stay in browser,” essentially lets you open links that would otherwise redirect you to a different app. For instance, clicking on a YouTube link in a browser window opens up the link in the YouTube app. But with this setting enabled, the YouTube video will open in the browser itself.

The new setting is particularly useful in cases where the external handler is set to an app that a user doesn’t have on their device. So, instead of forcing the user to install the app, the setting lets them open the link in the browser itself.

The update also includes a couple of new tab settings that make working with tabs more easy and efficient. The new tab settings let users open a tab from these four options:

  • After Related Tabs: The new tabs will share a “parent-child” relationship – if a link is opened in the current tab, the new tab will open next to its “parent”
  • After Active Tab: Opens new tab next to the current active tab (this is the default)
  • As Last Tab: Opens new tab at the end of the tabs
  • As Tab Stack With Related Tab: Opens a new tab stack with the active tab and the new tab

In addition, the update brings a new setting to disable Tab Stacks (or groups) that let you easily organize tabs in the browser. The feature works a lot like Tab groups on Google Chrome, allowing you to group multiple tabs into a stack to declutter the Tab Switcher. But if you don’t like it, you now have the option to disable it. The update also includes support for Accordion tabs, allowing you to quickly expand Tab Stacks with just a click.

Xiaomi reportedly overtook Samsung as the number 1 OEM in Europe in Q2 2021

Xiaomi is now the best-selling smartphone brand in Europe. According to a recent market study report from Strategy Analytics, the Chinese OEM overtook Samsung to take the top spot in Q2 2021. Although Xiaomi often tops the charts in markets like India, this is the first time the company has shipped more phones than Samsung in the European market.

As per the report, Xiaomi had a 25.3% market share in Europe in Q2 2021, and it shipped just under 13 million units in the quarter. In comparison, Samsung had a 24% market share with 12 million units shipped. The Chinese OEM recorded a YoY growth of 67.1%, while Samsung’s sales declined by 7%. Xiaomi’s tremendous growth in the region can be attributed to strong sales in Russia, Ukraine, Spain, and Italy.

Talking about Xiaomi’s massive success in the region, Boris Metodiev, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “The European markets for smartphones had a strong quarter driven by Covid recovery, following the crash in 2020. The highlight of the quarter is Xiaomi emerging as the number one vendor in shipment terms for the first time. Xiaomi shipped almost 13 million units on the continent to displace longtime leader Samsung. Xiaomi has seen great success in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy among others and found customers eager for its Mi and Redmi series of feature rich, value smartphones.”

Other Chinese OEMs also saw tremendous growth in the region during the second quarter. OPPO, which took the fourth spot on the list, had a market share of 5.6% and 180% YoY growth. Realme also secured a spot on the list with a 3.8% market share and a YoY growth of 1800%, thanks to the success of its Realme 8 series. Apple retained the third spot on the list, with a market share of 19.2% and 15.7% YoY growth. The company managed to ship almost 10 million units in the quarter.
