Google Camera Port Hub: Get the best GCam APK for Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, and other phones!

Google Camera and its post-processing algorithms undoubtedly changed the game in terms of what we expect from smartphone cameras, elevating the Google Pixels to some of the best Android phones you can buy for the camera. That’s the exact reason why Google Camera ports are so highly requested for non-Google devices. With the appropriate ported Google Camera app, you can use Google’s superior HDR+ optimization as well as their Portrait Mode on virtually any smartphone that supports the Camera2API.

How to install and use Google Camera Port

  1. Make sure your device supports the Camera2 API. Here’s our guide on how to check if your Android device supports Camera2 API.
    • Besides the Camera2 API, Google Camera also requires Google Play Services to run. The app will crash if you try to run it on a phone without Google Apps. You can, however, use MicroG or Gcam Services Provider to spoof Google’s proprietary libraries.
  2. Download the most compatible APK file of the ported Google Camera from the next section and install it.
    • Either use one of the suggested versions for your device or pick one of the generic mods.
    • You may need to install additional XML configuration files.
  3. Restart the app.
  4. Success!

WireGuard is getting a native, high-performance port to the Windows kernel

If you frequently use VPNs (virtual private networks), you’ll be excited to hear about a new project called WireGuardNT. For those unfamiliar, WireGuard is a relatively new VPN tunneling protocol that employs modern cryptography standards, has a secure code base, and has great performance. It’s integrated into the Linux kernel with version 5.6, but to date, there’s only ever been a userspace implementation on Windows. That’s where WireGuardNT comes in: It’s a native port of WireGuard to the Windows kernel, and it promises to make things much faster.

WireGuard on Windows currently uses a shared Go codebase with a TUN driver called Wintun. It works in userspace, and as the announcement puts it, it “shepherds packets to and from the Wintun interface”. With WireGuardNT, the whole protocol is implemented directly into Windows’ networking stack, just like on Linux.

While the performance of WireGuard on Windows is already pretty great, the plan is for it to get better with WireGuardNT. This project is still in its early stages, though, but even before additional tweaks and optimizations are made, it’s still faster by being native in the kernel. This can be attributed in part to the reduced overhead and latency from all the context switches happening with the old wireguard-go/Wintun implementation.

But how much faster is the new WireGuardNT implementation over the old userspace version? Over a wired connection, there wasn’t much of an issue even on the old userspace version, but the developers have noticed significant performance improvements over Wi-Fi. For example, a user with an Intel AC9560 WiFi card was getting ~600Mbps without WireGuard, ~95Mbps with the old userspace version over WiFi, and ~600Mbps with the WireGuardNT implementation over WiFi. Basically, the wireless performance hit from the old userspace version has been eliminated thanks to the new native kernel port.

As mentioned, the project is still in the early stages. To get it ready for release, there are three phases to the project in version 0.4.z of the WireGuard for Windows client. The first stage, which we’re in right now, sees WireGuardNT hidden behind the ‘ExperimentalKernelDriver’ registry knob, so if you don’t turn it on, it won’t be enabled. The second phase will see the native kernel implementation enabled by default. The third, and final, phase will see the removal of the old wireguard-go/Wintun userspace implementation from the Windows client, though it will still be maintained to support other apps and uses.

As is the case with experimental releases like this, developer Jason Donenfeld hopes that people will try it out to find bugs and leave feedback. WireGuardNT is part of the WireGuard client for Windows now, and it’s in version 0.4. You can download it here, or you can read more about the project here.

How to run MATLAB on a Chromebook in two easy ways

It’s a common misconception that Chromebooks aren’t capable of running powerful software found on PCs or Macs. If you’re an engineering student, you might need to run some fairly intensive applications on your laptop. Chromebooks are a great solution for students because they’re secure and cost-effective.

If you’re an engineering student using a Chromebook, you probably need to run MATLAB for some of your course assignments. Unlike Mac and PC, MATLAB doesn’t offer a native Chrome OS installation. Luckily, there are still a few easy ways to take advantage of MATLAB’s computing power on a Chromebook or other Chrome OS device. We’ll take a look at the online version of MATLAB, as well as demonstrate how to install a full version of MATLAB using Linux apps on your Chromebook.

Run MATLAB on a Chromebook using the browser

If you only need MATLAB for very basic tasks, like an introductory calculus or linear algebra course, your best bet is running MATLAB in the browser. MATLAB offers a robust online platform for cloud computing with a fair amount of power. To use MATLAB online you only need to sign into your university or organization Mathworks account and choose the online option. If you’re already signed in to your Mathworks account, you can access the online platform directly at matlab.mathworks.com.

The main downside to using MATLAB online is you must store files in the cloud server assigned to you by Mathworks. Using cloud storage is fairly natural on Chrome OS, but it’s a shame you can’t link your Google Drive or Dropbox to your MATLAB drive.

Storage for the MATLAB drive is limited to 5GB if you are using a current license from a university or professional organization. This is still quite limiting. I have well over 1 TB of data consisting of only code and output for my academic research on computational methods for partial differential equations.

Sometimes you need to store large matrices, which can eat up GBs very quickly. Plus, graphics also take up quite a bit of space. If you’re doing serious research in academia or industry you’ll likely need an alternative to running things in the cloud.

Still, for students using MATLAB on assignments, this should get the job done. You can always choose to move files back in forth between MATLAB’s cloud storage and your own Google Drive or Dropbox folder. Obviously this isn’t ideal, but it can get the job done in a pinch. If you have an LTE Chromebook, make sure to turn off auto-sync for the MATLAB drive.

Run MATLAB on a Chromebook using Linux apps

For those that can’t make do with the online solution, there’s another convenient option. Modern Chromebooks now support Linux apps. With Linux support, you can install the Linux version of MATLAB. To attempt this, you need some basic familiarity with the Terminal.  Those needing a quick refresher on Linux on Chrome OS can check out my full guide to Linux apps on Chromebooks.

Should you choose to install MATLAB via Linux on your Chromebook, I highly recommend installing an older version of MATLAB. I’m running MATLAB 2016b on my ASUS Chromebook CX9 at the moment. Over the years, MATLAB has gotten a bit more bloated with features.

Select Matlab version online

Older versions of MATLAB tend to run much smoother inside the Linux container on Chrome OS. In addition, some newer versions of MATLAB have some graphics acceleration incompatibility issues with certain Chromebooks.

You won’t lose much installing an older version of MATLAB on your Chromebook. The core feature set of MATLAB hasn’t changed for quite a few years. You will lose some fancy upgrades in graphics and toolboxes. However, for core scientific computing and testing, 2016b works fine for me. Let’s talk about how to actually install MATLAB on your Chromebook.

Download from Mathworks

The first step is to download your desired version of MATLAB from Mathworks. To do this, you will need your Mathworks login information associated to your university or company email address. Head to the Downloads section on Mathworks’ site and choose the version you wish to install. Again, I am using 2016b, but I think anything before 2019 would be okay on a Chromebook. Make sure you choose the Linux download and download the file to the Linux apps folder on your Chromebook.

Unzip the download

Next, you need to open a Terminal window to unzip the install package. If you haven’t enabled Linux apps yet, you’ll need to go read my tutorial and do that first. To unzip your file, type the command:

unzip matlab_R2016b_glna64.zip

Here, replace ‘matlab_R2016b_glna64.zip’ with the name of your downloaded install package.This process will take a short time and you will see several file names scroll down the Terminal window. When the process completes you will see username@penguin on the command line again.

Launch MATLAB installer

We’re ready to launch the MATLAB installer. To do this, run the command:

xhost +

Followed by the command:

sudo ./install

This will launch the MATLAB install window outside of the Terminal window. You will now need to use your Mathworks account to login and verify the associated license to download and install MATLAB.

The installer will ask which folder you wish to use for installation. I would recommend using the default folder suggested. You may receive a popup stating that you may not have enough space in the desired folder.

As long as you verify that there is enough storage on your Chromebook, you can ignore this warning and click Yes.

Choose packages and finish installation

The final step for installation is to choose which packages you wish to install. If you only want basic MATLAB, you can uncheck all options and just select the first checkbox.

If your university or organization pays for optional toolboxes, it’s probably worth downloading all of them. Toolboxes are incredibly expensive to obtain later if you want them, after leaving school for instance.

Installation will take quite awhile as the download size can be quite large. If you choose all toolboxes, you’re looking at a download size between 6-10 GB, depending on the version of MATLAB.

After the installation completes, MATLAB will verify your license by connecting to the Mathworks server. After verification, you can launch MATLAB from the command line with the simple command:

You’re all set, that’s the entire process for installing MATLAB on your Chromebook or other Chrome OS device. I was actually quite surprised how smoothly MATLAB runs in the Linux container on my Chromebook. It’s really a pretty nice experience. Google teases the Pixel 6 series with its custom Google Tensor chip

It’s no surprise that Google is preparing to launch the Pixel 6 series later this year, and in now typical Google fashion, the company has shared a plethora of details about its new phones weeks ahead of their launch. Google today confirmed the names, design, expected launch date, and many of the specs of its upcoming Pixel 6 series. Here’s a summary of everything they teased.

Meet the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Thanks to leaks, we knew that Google was working on two phones in its 2021 Pixel lineup. What we didn’t have confirmation on was the name. Many assumed the larger and more premium model would be called the Pixel 6 “Pro” rather than the Pixel 6 “XL”, and while some leaks pointed towards the latter being the name, Google today confirmed that they’re going with “Pro” to signify the ultra-premium model.

Both the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro will debut this fall, though Google didn’t specify exactly when they’ll launch the two phones. The launch will probably happen in mid-October, though, if their previous history is anything to go by. At the launch, we’ll hear more about the new features, tech specs, pricing, and availability, but Google’s preview today still reveals a lot of exciting information.

For starters, Google talks up the design of the new Pixel 6 series. Both phones have an “industrial design”, with the Pro having a “light polished aluminum frame” and the non-Pro having a “matte aluminum finish.” Interestingly, the non-Pro will seem to be available in more fun color options, while the Pro will be available in three staid colors.

In a major departure from previous Pixel phones, the Pixel 6 series will have a massive camera bump to house its multi-camera setup. For the first time in a Pixel phone, the Pixel 6 Pro will have three rear cameras — a main wide-angle camera, a secondary ultra wide-angle camera, and a tertiary telephoto camera. The Pro’s telephoto camera offers 4X optical zoom, which seems a bit less than what the Google Camera APK hinted at but without knowing the exact sensor and optical details, we can’t comment on the discrepancy. The regular Pixel 6 skips out on the 4X telephoto camera, but it’ll have the same main and ultra wide-angle cameras.

Google Silicon 101 (GS101) is officially “Google Tensor”

With this year’s Pixel phones, Google has been rumored to ditch Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips for the company’s in-house chips co-designed by Samsung. Those chips were reportedly code-named “whitechapel” and numerous references to the new custom chip appeared online in the form of “GS101”, where “GS” likely refers to “Google Silicon” and “101” indicating the first chip in the Google Silicon lineup. Google today confirmed that its new custom chip will be marketed as “Google Tensor.”
