Xiaomi’s new 20,000mAh (50W) fast charging power bank can charge your laptop, phone, and accessories

Xiaomi India today unveiled Mi Power Bank Hyper Sonic, the company’s latest power bank that lets you charge multiple devices at once, including your smartphone, laptop, and other accessories. The power bank is open for crowdfunding starting today and supports up to 50W fast charging.

Mi Power Bank Hyper Sonic packs in a massive 20,000mAh battery and features a premium matte black design made of polycarbonate + ABC material. Power banks with 20,000mAh capacities are a dime a dozen in the Indian market, but what sets Xiaomi’s Mi Power Bank Hyper Sonic apart from the crowd is support for fast charging and how versatile it is. It offers up to 50W fast charging for phones and up to 45W fast charging via USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 for laptops.

Xiaomi says the 4,500mAh battery on its Mi 11X can be fully charged using the power bank in just 1 hour and 5 min. Meanwhile, a laptop like the Lenovo L480 takes about 2 hours and 27 min to go from zero to full. The power bank itself takes up to 3 hours and 50 minutes to fully charge using a compatible fast charger. It also has a low power mode (enabled by double-pressing the power button) for charging your smartwatch, earphones, fitness band, etc. The power bank also has various battery protection algorithms in place to protect devices from a short circuit, over-current, and overheating.

Mi Power Bank Hyper Sonic looks quite promising on paper. In fact, it’s the only power bank in India that offers such versatility, portability, and fast charging capabilities at this price range.

If you’re sold on the pitch, you can support the crowdfunding initiative for ₹3,499 on Xiaomi India’s website. Crowdfunding will be open for 15 days with a goal of 2,500 units. Orders will start shipping from September 15.

Intel NUC 11 ‘Beast Canyon’ launches with redesigned chassis and CPU options

Intel has introduced a new NUC (Next Unit of Computing) Extreme kit, codenamed ‘Beast Canyon,’ an update to the NUC 9 from last year. The new NUC 11 is pretty interesting as it features the latest 11th-gen Intel processors going up to a Core i9-11900KB and includes the option to add a full-size 12-inch GPU in a brand new 8-liter chassis.

There are some good upgrades from the previous-gen model. As mentioned, there is a new chassis that is longer and makes room for some beefier hardware. The power supply has been updated to an SFX 650W Gold-rated unit which means it is much more capable and reliable when handling high-end hardware. The chassis includes two PCIe Gen-4 slots, one for the compute unit itself and the other for the GPU, potentially up to an RTX 3080. There are also three 92mm fans, so all the hot air exhausts from the top, and there is some RGB lighting with a glowing skull logo at the front. Overall, the system seems to be an excellent choice for someone looking for a small form factor gaming PC.

The NUC 11 can also be configured with a Core i7-11700B, and Intel has also confirmed (via The Verge) that owners of the older NUC 9 can upgrade to these new CPU options. However, there will be certain limitations on the PCIe Gen 4 support and the front panel audio.

Other features that you can expect on the new NUC 11 kit include support for 64GB dual-channel memory, four M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 6E with 2.5-gigabit Intel Ethernet port, and two Thunderbolt 4 HDMI 2.0, and six USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports. At the front, there are two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports as well as an SDXC card slot.

Intel will be selling the Core i7-11700B model at $1,399, while the Core i9-11900KB will be available starting at $1,599. Both models are expected to start shipping in September. For more details, check out Intel’s announcement here.

Xbox Game Pass update hints at possible Android TV support

A big pitch of cloud gaming is cross-device compatibility. All cloud gaming services promise that you can play all your games on multiple devices, including a phone, PC, tablet, laptop, and even in a web browser. However, smart TVs haven’t been on the radar of cloud gaming providers up until recently. Google finally expanded Stadia to Android TVs last month, and now Microsoft is on course to follow suit.

As discovered by Reddit user /el_gonz87, the latest APK of Xbox Game Pass is laying the groundwork for Android TV support. When the Redditor decompiled the APK, he found a banner image for Android TV, suggesting that the app will soon officially arrive on the platform. Android TV apps are required to have a banner image of a specific size in order to show up on the launcher, and that’s what the latest version of the Xbox Game Pass has added.

Xbox Game Pass Android TV banner

Although the Xbox Game Pass app is available on the Google Play Store, there’s no official version available for Android TV at the moment. Since Android TV is still, well, Android, it was always possible to sideload the Xbox Game Pass app onto an Android TV device such as Chromecast. However, anyone that’s tried it can tell you it’s not worth the effort because the layout is poorly optimized for TV, the app can’t be easily navigated with a controller, and streaming can be buggy. The official version will likely fix these issues as it will have a TV-optimized layout and proper remote/controller support. Moreover, with the official Android TV app, users won’t have to go through the hassle of sideloading the APK.

Separately, 9to5Google found that when they sideloaded the latest Xbox Game Pass APK on a Chromecast, it showed up on the homescreen. However, the app is still not listed on the Google Play Store for Android TV.

Of course, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed yet that they’ll support Android TV, but with Stadia recently launching an official app for the platform, it’s only natural that Microsoft would like to do the same. It also ties into Microsoft’s recent push to integrate its game streaming services directly into newer smart TVs. The Redmond firm recently confirmed it’s also working on its own Xbox game streaming device.

Facebook thinks you’ll buy its smart glasses if it has Ray-Ban branding

In March this year, Facebook showcased new wristband controllers for future AR systems. The wristband controllers aimed to provide a more natural and intuitive method to control the company’s upcoming AR glasses. While Facebook didn’t share any details about the AR glasses at the time, Mark Zuckerberg has now confirmed some details.

During an earnings call this week, Zuckerberg said, “Looking ahead here, the next product release will be the launch of our first smart glasses from Ray-Ban in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses have their iconic form factor, and they let you do some pretty neat things. So I’m excited to get these in people’s hands and to continue to make progress on the journey towards full augmented reality glasses in the future.”

Although Zuckerberg didn’t reveal any info about the “neat things” the upcoming glasses would be capable of, Facebook has previously confirmed that the glasses won’t feature an integrated display, and they won’t be classified as an AR device (via The Verge). This leads us to believe that Facebook’s upcoming Ray-Ban branded smart glasses would rely on a companion app, like the original Snap Spectacles, the Razer Anzu, and the Amazon Echo Frames.

The Ray-Ban partnership will, most likely, help Facebook’s upcoming smart glasses stand apart. Although a lot of us won’t go out and buy the glasses just because of the Ray-Ban branding, many people will. And Facebook is banking on that. This is why, instead of revealing any technical details about the upcoming smart glasses, Zuckerberg shared info about the Ray-Ban partnership during the earnings call.

What’s your take on Facebook’s decision to partner with Ray-Ban for its upcoming smart glasses? Do you think the Ray-Ban branding will help the glasses achieve mainstream success? Let us know in the comments below.

AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 XT is made for 1080p gaming and costs $379

AMD has added a new member to its Radeon RX 6000 series of graphics cards targetting gamers looking for a capable 1080p GPU. The new RX 6600 XT sits below the RX 6700 XT, making it the fifth card in the series based on the RDNA2 architecture. The latest GPU comes with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, 32 Compute Units, and a peak single precision compute performance of 10.6 teraflops.

We were expecting AMD to launch a mainstream 1080p desktop GPU soon, especially after the launch of the Radeon 6000M series mobile gaming chipsets, which include the Radeon RX 6800M, RX 6700M, and the RX 6600M. Notably, AMD’s card comes a good five months after NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060, giving Team Red an advantage in understanding and positioning its new card for the right set of audiences. As per AMD, the RX 6600 XT is the best GPU for 1080p gaming and can beat the RTX 3060.

AMD also emphasized the importance of a 1080p card, suggesting that about two-third of monitors shipped around the world are still 1080p. Having a 2359 MHz game clock speed and 160W rated power consumption, the card uses a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. The new RX 6600 XT graphics card offers up to 15 percent higher performance on average with max settings across select AAA titles compared to the competition and 125 FPS on average across a range of modern AAA titles.

AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT specs

With a starting price of $379, the Radeon RX 6600 XT seems like a promising GPU for gamers looking at a fairly inexpensive option for 1080p gaming. It will go on sale starting August 11th, with board partners including ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, SAPPHIRE, XFX, and Yeston expected to launch their products on the same date. Pre-built systems and system integrators are also expected to offer the GPU beginning August 2021.

ASUS Radeon RX 6600 XT GPU models

ASUS is one of the first board partners that has already announced two models based on the  Radeon RX 6600 XT. The ROG Strix and ASUS Dual AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT graphics cards will be available at the above-mentioned date. The ROG Strix will be the more lucrative option featuring RGB lighting, four heat pipes for cooling, and the option to optimize performance with two different fan and power profiles, using the onboard dual-BIOS switch.

Motorola Edge 20

The Motorola Edge 20 is in the middle of the pack and features nearly the same camera system as the Pro model, but it has a slightly downgraded telephoto lens. It has the upper mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G, but retains much of the same features and even design of the Pro model. The battery is also slightly downgraded — from 4,500 mAh in the Pro to 4,000 mAh in this model.

Motorola Edge 20 Lite: Specifications

Motorola Edge 20 Lite

The Motorola Edge 20 Lite is the most budget-oriented of the trio, and it packs the MediaTek Dimensity 720 in place of a Qualcomm chipset. The ultra-wide camera is also dropped, though the rest of the specifications manage to stay mostly the same. The display refresh rate drops down to 90Hz, but it’s still HDR10+ and full HD+. The battery is slightly bigger at 5000mAh, which is nice.

Software

In a communication blunder, Motorola initially told Android Authority that the company will only guarantee one major software update and two years of security updates, but they have since backtracked and told the publication that the Motorola Edge 20 series will get two major OS updates. That means the Motorola Edge 20 series will get updates to Android 12 and Android 13. Two years of OS updates is a lot more reasonable than one year, especially given the price of these phones, though it’s certainly nowhere near the best.

All three devices are launching with support for Motorola’s “Ready For” platform, which is the company’s equivalent to Samsung DeX.

Pricing and availability

The Motorola Edge 20 series will be available for purchase in Europe in the following configurations:

  • Motorola Edge 20 Pro: Available August at £649.99/€699.99 in Midnight Blue, Blue Vegan Leather, or Iridescent White
  • Motorola Edge 20: Available August at £429.99/€499.99 in Frosted Gray, Frosted Emerald, or Frosted White
  • Motorola Edge 20 Lite: Available September at £299.99/€349.99 in Lagoon Green or Electric Graphite

The Motorola Edge 20 series is also coming to Asia and Latin America. In the Middle East, the Edge 20 Lite and Pro models will be available. One of these devices will come to North America this fall, though Motorola hasn’t confirmed yet which one will make it stateside.

CarbonROM releases Android 11 builds for 16 phones from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others

The CarbonROM team has announced the first stable builds of CarbonROM 9.0 (CR-9.0) based on Android 11. CarbonROM is undoubtedly a little late to the Android 11 party, but if you are a fan of the ROM and were waiting for a stable release, you can finally try it out on your phone — assuming your device is on the official list. In the first wave, the stable builds of CarbonROM based on Android 11 are live for 16 smartphones, including the OnePlus 6/6T, OnePlus 7 series, Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi Note 7, Essential Phone, and more.

CarbonROM, just like other AOSP-based ROMs, sticks close to the stock Android experience but comes with added features and customizations which many custom ROM users cherish. The team says all known features from CarbonROM 8.0 have been carried over to this release, including the Font engine, which allows users to apply their own custom fonts. This can be done by uploading your font files to fonts.corbonrom.org and generating a resource APK that can be installed on your phone. On top of this, some new features have been added as well, like Powershare and proximity checks for double-tap to wake feature on supported phones.

Here’s the complete list of devices that have received the official build of CarbonROM 9.0:

More devices are slated to receive an official build of CarbonROM based on Android 11 soon. Although the builds are labeled “WEEKLY,” there won’t be weekly releases. Instead, new builds will be released on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The team says this allows them to incorporate new monthly security patches early while still leaving room for fixing bugs and adding new features.

If you’re interested in trying out the latest build of CarbonROM based on Android 11, follow the links embedded above in the device list.
