OnePlus 9R update brings OxygenOS 11.2.4.4 with Bitmoji AOD

The OnePlus 9R, an overclocked version of the OnePlus 8T that’s only available in India and China, is getting a new software update to OxygenOS 11.2.4.4. The update brings the most recent security patch level — July 2021 — and also enhances the Always on Display with new features.

According to the post announcing the update on the OnePlus forums, the latest update for the OnePlus 9R also optimizes the “overheating control management of third-party apps”, updates the preinstalled Google Mobile Services packages to the June 2021 release, and fixes other “known issue[s].” More importantly, the update also adds the Bitmoji AOD feature which recently rolled out to the other devices in the OnePlus 9 series. This feature lets you use your personal Bitmoji avatar on the Always on Display and can be found under Settings > Customization > Clock on ambient display > Bitmoji.

The incremental OTA can only be applied if your device is running the OxygenOS 11.2.3.3 update; otherwise, you’ll need to download the full OTA zip to update to the latest release.

Best wallpaper apps for Chrome OS: Backdrops, Bing, and more

Buying a shiny new Chromebook is an exciting experience. With Chrome OS, you get speed and performance at a lower cost. In fact, many Chromebooks are some of the best laptops you can find under $600. One of the first things you’ll want to do when you boot up your new Chromebook is change the wallpaper. We already have an excellent tutorial for changing the wallpaper on a Chromebook, but it’s also nice to have a list of apps for finding quality backgrounds.

In this article we run down the best apps, extensions, and websites to find wallpapers for your Chromebook or Chromebox.

Use Google’s built-in wallpaper picker

Choosing a new built-in wallpaper is the fastest option. Start by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting the Set wallpaper option. You can also long-press on the screen to set the wallpaper if you have a touchscreen Chromebook. Next, select an image you’d like from the pre-installed list to set it as your wallpaper.

If you don’t mind getting a random wallpaper, check the box next to Surprise me and your Chromebook will choose a wallpaper for you, and show you a new one every now and then.

Google’s built-in wallpaper app has a wide selection of images. You have cityscapes, landscapes, solid colors, and several quality art pieces to select from. There’s a good chance you’ll find a wallpaper for you in this list.

Use Android apps for custom wallpapers

The majority of Chromebooks now support Android apps. Indeed, the versatility to run Google Play apps makes your Chromebook a great education laptop. This also opens the door to several excellent custom wallpaper apps that run on Android.

In this section we’ll take a look at the top three Android apps for choosing a custom wallpaper for your Chromebook. Keep in mind some of the wallpapers in these apps are specifically designed for phones, so a few images may not look the best on the desktop. However, all of these Android apps have a selection of high resolution wallpapers you can use on a Chromebook without issue.

Backdrops

Our personal favorite Android app for wallpapers is Backdrops. With this app you get new custom wallpapers each day, with premium collections available for a small in-app purchase. In addition, creators can upload their wallpapers to share under the Community tab. If you like sleek vector-designed wallpapers, this is definitely an app to check out.

Use Chrome extensions for custom wallpapers

Changing your wallpaper on Chrome OS is incredibly intuitive. Whether you want to switch to a built-in image provided by Google, or find your own custom option, the process only takes a few minutes. If you’re interested in beautiful artistic wallpapers, check out the Android apps suggested below to choose a new background image for your Chrome OS device.

Google Arts and Culture Tab Wallpapers

While not a traditional wallpaper extension, Google’s Arts and Culture extension will change each new tab background in Chrome to a new artistic masterpiece. You can also browse Google’s collection of pieces and choose to set one of those works as your actual desktop wallpaper as well. This app contains art from Van Gogh, Monet, and many popular contemporary artists.

There’s an option to limit the background change to only one per day instead of each new tab, if you prefer to enjoy each new background for a little longer.

Bing Desktop Wallpapers Extension

If you typically enjoy Bing’s image of the day, this extension will set that background as your Chrome OS wallpaper. Your wallpaper will automatically update to align with Bing’s image selection. This particular extension is only for Chrome OS and will not work with the Chrome browser on other operating systems.

The HD Wallpapers extension for Chrome OS offers a beautiful selection of images to use on your Chromebook. You can choose to automatically set HD wallpapers on every restart and refresh every three hours. There’s also an option to manually select and set the wallpaper. This extension is also only for Chrome OS and will not work with the Chrome browser on other operating systems.

Google Play Services will soon delete your advertising ID when you opt out of ad personalization

Update 1 (07/28/2021 @ 4:49 PM ET): Google has shared an image that shows what deleting your advertising ID looks like in Google Play Services settings on Android 12, and they’ve also revealed a new app set ID SDK for developers. Click here for more information. The article, as published on June 3, 2021, is preserved below.

Google Play Services generates an advertising ID for all users who opt-in for ad personalization. This ID not only helps Google push relevant ads to users, but it also comes in handy for analytics and fraud prevention. When you turn off ad personalization on your account, Google stops using your advertising ID to push personalized ads, but it still maintains it for other purposes. However, that’s set to change soon.

Currently, you can opt out of personalized ads by heading to Settings > Google > Ads or Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Ads on your Android device. Once you do so, Google Play Services will stop pushing personalized ad recommendations to your device, but apps on your phone will still be able to see the advertising ID. But a recent update on the Play Console Help page reveals that Google Play Services will soon delete the advertising ID when you opt out of interest-based advertising. The update states: “Starting in late 2021, when a user opts out of interest-based advertising or ads personalization, the advertising identifier will not be available. You will receive a string of zeros in place of the identifier.”

After this change goes live, apps on your phone will see a string of zeroes instead of your advertising ID if you disable personalized ads. Google Play Services will also alert all apps that have access to your advertising ID and related data, so that any existing data can be deleted. In a notice shared by developer kdrag0n, Google further reveals that “This Google Play services phased rollout will affect apps running on Android 12 devices starting late 2021 and will expand to affect apps running on devices that support Google Play in early 2022. In July, we will provide more details and an alternate solution to support essential use cases such as analytics and fraud prevention.”

At the moment, we don’t have any information about the alternate solution that Google will introduce for analytics and fraud prevention. We’ll update this post as soon as we learn more.

Update 1: More details shared during July 2021 policy update

In the company’s latest PolicyBytes video outlining the upcoming policy changes on Google Play, Google shared more details about what’s happening to the advertising ID and its replacement for analytics and fraud prevention.

For starters, Google showed off what the option to delete your advertising ID will look like, a feature that will roll out to Android 12 devices via a Google Play Services update later this year.

Google has also shared some details on the alternate solution for essential use cases such as analytics and fraud prevention. Called app set ID, this ID is a unique identifier for all apps by the same developer on the device. Google calls this a “privacy-friendly option” to correlate usage or actions across a set of apps owned by your organization, and it must not be used for ads personalization or ads measurement, be connected to any Android identifiers or any personal and sensitive data for advertising purposes, and its collection must be disclosed to the user in a “legally adequate privacy notification, including your privacy policy.”

The app set ID SDK will return an ID unique to the calling app itself if the app was installed from a source other than Google Play, if Google Play Services was unable to determine an app’s developer account, or if the app was installed on a device without Play Services installed. The app set ID is cleared automatically if the API hasn’t been accessed by the group of apps sharing the same ID for over 13 month, if the last app from a given set of apps is uninstalled, or if the user factory resets the device. The developer preview of this feature is now live, though Google warns that due to the potential for changes, the app set ID API shouldn’t be used in production apps.

Samsung Galaxy A52 gets August 2021 security update ahead of schedule

Getting regular security patch updates are vital to making smartphones last longer, particularly as new threats emerge in the realm of cybersecurity. That’s why Google has the monthly security bulletin, the most recent of which was published at the start of July 2021. In these bulletins, Google details a number of security vulnerabilities and their fixes in that month’s patch level, but it’s up to device manufacturers to roll out updates with those patches. The gap between the publication of a security bulletin and the update rolling out can vary, but Samsung is typically ahead of the curve when it comes to this. Now, the SM-A525F variant of the Samsung Galaxy A52 (the 4G version) is already getting the August 2021 security update in Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia.

The update rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy A52 brings software version A525FXXU3AUG4, and it has a pretty short changelog that mentions improving the battery charging algorithm, improving camera stability, and bumping up the security patch to August 2021. Keep in mind that while it appears that Samsung has “beaten” Google at their own game, Google always waits until the bulletin is public at the start of the month before rolling out the update. Plus, they also share the details of the security bulletin with OEMs like Samsung a month or more in advance to give them time to merge the changes. Still, Samsung has been very good at rolling out security patches in a timely manner, and last month, they were one of the first smartphone manufacturers to roll out the July 2021 security update.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 is a pretty recent mid-range phone from Samsung, packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G and up to 8GB of RAM. The phone is one of Samsung’s more exciting mid-rangers, though it certainly has many compromises to bring down costs. A mid-ranger getting timely security patches is always welcome, though. Hopefully, this update will start rolling out for the Galaxy A52 in the U.S. soon, too. Keep in mind that with this update, the bootloader has been bumped from v2 to v3, so a downgrade is not possible.

How to install Windows 11 in a VM to try out the new features

The Windows 11 announcement was very exciting for Windows fans, as Microsoft is finally bringing a breath of fresh air to Windows. Many of us are eager to try out the new features and design changes in the new OS, but there’s some risk involved. Windows 11 is only available for Insiders right now, and that means it can be unstable. Because of that, replacing Windows 10 isn’t a good idea if you’re worried about losing your data. You can still try Windows 11 using a virtual machine (VM), though.

Virtual machines are a great way to test software without damaging your computer. They create an isolated environment so that any files handled inside a VM can’t affect the host operating system. VMs also make it easy to boot up and shut down an operating system when you want to try it, so you don’t have to reboot your PC or have another one at hand.

There are many programs that allow you to create virtual machines, but in this case, we’re going with Hyper-V. This feature is built right into Windows, but it’s an optional feature you’ll need to enable. Officially you’ll need a Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition of Windows 10, but it’s possible to install it on Home editions with some tinkering.

How to enable Hyper-V in Windows 10

First things first, you need to make sure you have a PC compatible with Hyper-V. Running a VM is not a lightweight workload, so you’ll need at least 4GB of RAM on your host PC. In fact, for Windows 11, you’ll want even more, because the VM you’re creating should have 4GB to itself in order to support Windows 11, according to the system requirements. There are two other things you’ll need:

• A 64-bit Processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT).
• CPU support for VM Monitor Mode Extension (VT-x on Intel CPU’s).

Most modern processors should support these features, but it’s always best to make sure. You can check if your computer can support Hyper-V using Command Prompt or PowerShell. Here’s how to do it:

• Right-click the Start icon or press Windows key + X, then choose Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin). Which option shows up depends on your version of Windows 10.
• Type systeminfo.exe in the Command Prompt/PowerShell window and press Enter.
• Check the Hyper-V requirements section at the end. All the items should say Yes for Hyper-V to work.

If Virtualization Enabled in Firmware says No, you can enable it in your computer’s firmware/BIOS settings, but those vary by device. Finally, you’ll need to make sure Hyper-V is enabled as an optional feature. To do this, follow these steps:

• Open Start and type Control Panel, then press Enter.
• Click Programs, then Turn Windows features on or off.
• Hyper-V should be one of the first options. Make sure it and its additional features are all enabled, as seen below:

With all that sorted out, you’re almost ready to create a virtual machine. The last thing you need is an ISO you’ll use for it. You have a few options here:

• Download the latest stable version of Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool and then joining the Insider program in the virtual machine and downloading Windows 11.
• Download the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO which is already enrolled in the Dev channel, then update to Windows 11.
• Create your own Windows 11 ISO if you’re comfortable doing that. We’d recommend one of the other two options, though.

Creating a Windows VM in Hyper-V

Creating a VM in Hyper-V isn’t as scary as it might initially seem. Here’s what you need to set up a VM with Windows 10 or 11:

• Open Start and type Hyper-V. Press Enter to launch Hyper-V Manager.
• If it’s the first time you’re launching it, you may need to click your PC’s name on the left-side menu first.
• On the right-side menu, click New, then Virtual machine.
• The Virtual machine Wizard will launch to guide you through the process. Click Next, then choose a name for your Windows 11 VM.

• A VM is saved as a file, and you can change where the file is saved if you want to. Once you’re done, click Next.
• Here, you’ll be asked what generation of VM you want to create. For new versions of Windows, like Windows 10 or 11, you’re going to want to use Generation 2.

• Next, you have to specify how much memory you want to assign to the virtual machine. As mentioned before, you’ll need at least 4GB of RAM, so enter 4096MB or more. Also, make sure to leave the Dynamic Memory option enabled.

• In the next step, change the connection type to Default Switch. This will allow your VM to access the internet, which you’ll need to download the Windows 11 update.

• Now, you have to set up a virtual hard disk. This will be the storage available for your VM, and you can choose any value you want as long as your host PC has that space free. However, you have to remember that Windows 11 requires 64GB of storage, so that’s the bare minimum you’ll need to choose. You can also change where the virtual hard disk is stored and change its name, but this is completely optional.

• This is where you’ll need the ISO file you downloaded before. Choose Install an operating system from a bootable image file, then click Browse to search for the ISO file you downloaded.

• Click Next, then Finish.
• In the Hyper-V Manager window, right-click the VM you just created, then click Settings….
• Click the Security section on the left-side menu and make sure the Enable Secure Boot and Enable Trusted Platform Module options are both enabled. You’ll need these for a Windows 11 VM. Also enable the option that says Encrypt state and virtual machine migration traffic. Click Apply before continuing.

• Switch to the Processor section on the left-side menu and increase the number of virtual processors to two or more. This is another minimum requirement for running Windows 11, so your VM needs to match. You can choose as many as you want, as long as you have a powerful enough processor.

• Click OK.

You’re now ready to use your Windows 10 VM, which you can upgrade to Windows 11. Double-click your newly created VM, then click Start. You’ll have to set up Windows 10 as a brand-new PC.

Install Windows 11 on your VM

From here, installing and setting up Windows 10 works just like a clean install on a real PC. Once it’s all set up, you can join the Insider program and download Windows 11. Here’s how to do that:

• Choose your language and region settings. The default settings should be fine, so you can click Next. On the next page, click Install now.
• Enter a product key if you have one at hand. You can choose to skip this for now, but you’ll need it later.
• Choose the edition of Windows 10 you want to install. You have to choose an edition that matches the product key you used.

• Accept the license agreement, and then choose Custom: Install Windows only (Advanced).
  
• You’ll now have to create a partition to install Windows. Simple click Drive 0 Unallocated Space, then click New. Use the default size, then click Apply, and then OK. Multiple partitions will be created.

• Click Next to begin the installation, and you’ll soon be running Windows 10.
• Now you’ll set up Windows 10 as you would on a normal PC. Just follow the instructions on the screen to configure it to your liking until you’re on the Windows 10 desktop.
• Once you’re on the desktop, open the Start menu and then the Settings app.
• Open the Update & Security section, then choose Windows Insider Program from the left-side menu.
• Click Get started, then Link an account. You’ll need to sign in with a Microsoft account in order to join the Insider program.
• Next, you have to choose the Windows Insider channel you want to join. Windows 11 is only available in the Dev Channel for now, so that’s the option you have to choose. Click Confirm twice, then click Restart Now to finish setting up your PC for the Insider program.

• Once your VM restarts, you can download Windows 11 using Windows Update. Open the Settings app and go to Update & Security.
• Click Check for updates, and Windows 11 should start downloading. You may see other updates, too.

• Once the update finishes downloading and installing, restart your VM to finish setting up.

You’ll now be running Windows 11 in your VM. There may be further updates to download in Windows Update if you want to get the latest features. Vivaldi’s latest update includes Accordian Tabs and Command Chains

Today, Vivaldi is releasing version 4.1 of its browser. The two key new features are Accordian Tabs and Command Chains.

Tab Stacks aren’t a new feature in Vivaldi 4.1. You can already use them in two different styles: Compact and Two-level, the latter of which is the default. You can create a Tab Stack just by dragging a tab on top of another, and then if you click on the group, the browser creates a second row of tabs for the ones in your Stack. With Compact, it just shows bars on top of the tab that let you cycle between them.

With Accordian Tabs, your Tab Stack will expand when you click on it. When you click on an outside tab, the group will collapse. You can also manually collapse it by clicking the little arrow next to the group. You can also keep it open after switching away from it by double-clicking on it.

You can change your Tab Stack settings by going to Settings -> Tabs.

Next up are Command Chains. The idea is pretty self-explanatory. You can set up a sequence of browser commands. For example, you can turn on Fullscreen and Reader modes at the same time to create an immersive experience.

You can create a new Command Chain by clicking the plus icon, and there are over 200 commands to work with. Then, you can either access it via Quick Commands (or by pressing F2), or you can create your own keyboard shortcut for it. They’re also available in the customizable menus, and Vivaldi says that the possibilities are “literally endless”.

There are a few smaller updates, such as a minute-counter in Reader View that will tell you how long it will take to read content. Also, Vivaldi 4.1 adds seamless updates on Windows, so the browser will just update in the background. Here’s the full changelog for Vivaldi 4.1:
