Download: MIUI 12.5 Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices [Update: July 2 builds]

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12.5 – is finally here. The first incremental update over MIUI 12 has been unveiled at the Mi 11 launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 12, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12.5 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and a handful of new features. We have already extracted the new live wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12.5 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi has yet to launch MIUI 12.5 globally. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

Since 5G is all the rage currently across the globe (if only for the marketing hype), brands are cashing in by launching 5G phones that are slightly pricier than 4G phones and are pitching them as future-proof. In India, 5G is still a long way off so if you’re going to change your phone in the next two years, getting a 4G-enabled phone, for now, seems like a smarter option.

Even then, if you still want a 5G smartphone and are going to use your phone for more than three to four years, the Realme 8 5G is a good option. It has the Dimensity 700 chip from MediaTek that’s quite powerful, a 90Hz IPS LCD display, a 5000mAh battery, and a 48MP triple camera setup. As you can probably tell, apart from the SoC, the rest of the specifications aren’t that impressive which is a compromise you make to get 5G at an affordable price. If you really want 5G and a chipset that performs the best at this price range, go for it.

Poco has been launching great value for money smartphones in the Indian market be it the Poco F1 from back in the day that came with a flagship SoC, or the Poco X3 Pro that was launched a few months back targeted towards mobile gamers looking for a powerful phone under Rs. 20k. The Poco M3 Pro is also one such smartphone that aims to democratize 5G connectivity (albeit the fact that there are no 5G networks yet in India). The Dimensity 700 handles CPU duties and does a fairly good job at it. There’s a 90Hx IPS LCD display with a punch-hole cutout.

The back house three cameras out of which you would probably use just the primary 48MP shooter. A 5000mAh battery is what powers everything with support for 18W fast charging. On the software side of things, there’s MIUI 12 running on top of Android 11. Given that this is a phone from Poco, MIUI is relatively cleaner with no ads. There are phones in this price range that offer better specs and value so we would recommend the Poco M3 Pro 5G strictly only to someone looking for a 5G phone that they plan to use for the next 2-3 years since that’s when 5G will actually be available to use on a large scale in India.

You can get a Full HD+ AMOLED display which is quite rare in this segment along with a 48MP camera quad-camera setup that can shoot some good pictures. The build quality is also solid on the Redmi Note 10 thanks to a glass back.

One area where the Redmi Note 10 slightly falls short is in terms of performance. You get a Snapdragon 678 chip which is fine for day-to-day activities and social media apps but starts to struggle a bit when pushed with some heavy games. The 5000mAh battery ensures good all-day battery life and you get a 33W fast charger in the box which is a bonus. If you consume a lot of content, you are going to love the Redmi Note 10, especially for its display. This is easily one of the best Android phones in India in this price bracket.

Google removes nine apps for stealing Facebook users’ logins and passwords

Google has removed nine apps from the Play Store after it was found these apps stole user’s Facebook login credentials. All apps offered legitimate services and were downloaded more than 5 million times.

As uncovered by security researchers at Dr. Web (via ArsTechnica), these malicious apps used a special mechanism to trick users into handing over their Facebook credentials. The apps lured users into disabling in-app advertisements by linking their Facebook profiles. When the user went to link their profile, they saw a genuine form asking them to enter their Facebook username and password. The Facebook page loaded into Android WebView itself was legitimate. However, the researchers discovered that hijackers also loaded malicious JavaScript into the same WebView to steal user data.

As researchers at Dr. Web describe:

This script was directly used to highjack the entered login credentials. After that, this JavaScript, using the methods provided through the JavascriptInterface annotation, passed stolen login and password to the trojan applications, which then transferred the data to the attackers’ C&C server. After the victim logged into their account, the trojans also stole cookies from the current authorization session. Those cookies were also sent to cybercriminals.

These are the nine apps caught stealing users’ Facebook logins and passwords:

  1. PIP Photo (5,000,000+ downloads)
  2. Processing Photo (500,000+ downloads)
  3. Rubbish Cleaner (100,000+ downloads)
  4. Inwell Fitness (100,000+ downloads)
  5. Horoscope Daily (100,000+ downloads)
  6. App Lock Keep (50,000+ downloads)
  7. Lockit Master (5,000+ downloads)
  8. Horoscope Pi (1,000 downloads)
  9. App Lock manager (10 downloads)

And these are the five malware variants that Dr. Web identified inside the apps.

Google has since removed these apps from the Play Store and has also banned the publishers of all nine apps from the platform, so they can’t publish any new apps. If you have installed any of the above-listed apps on your Android device, uninstall them immediately. Also, make sure to reset your Facebook password and enable 2-factor authentication just to be on the safer side.
