Google Chrome is testing a new “Shortcuts” widget on Android

Google Chrome for Android is testing a new widget in the latest Canary release that lets you add Chrome shortcuts to your home screen. The new widget is available in Chrome Canary v93.0.4555.0, but you’ll need to enable an experimental flag to access it.

According to Chrome Story, you can try the new widget by heading over to chrome://flags and enabling the “Quick Action Search Widget” flag. Following that, you’ll have to restart the browser and then check the Widgets menu on your phone for the new widget. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the widget adds a search bar and four shortcuts to your home screen. However, it isn’t functional at the moment.

A new commit on the Chromium Gerrit suggests that the widget will officially be called “Shortcuts Widget” upon release. A separate commit reveals that one of the buttons on the widget will be a Dino button, and it’ll launch Chrome’s offline Dino game. It’s worth noting that a similar widget is already available on Chrome v90 for iOS.

According to MacRumors, Chome for iOS offers three such shortcut widgets. The Quick Actions widget offers a search bar, a shortcut to open an incognito window, a voice search shortcut, and a shortcut to open a QR code scanner. In addition, Chrome for iOS has two single tile widgets that let you perform a quick search or launch the Chrome Dino game.

Currently, we’ve only seen the large Quick Action widget in Chrome for Android. But the aforementioned reference to the Dino button suggests that Google may release the single-tile Dino widget on Andriod as well. We’re not sure if the Android version will get the single-tile Search widget or not.

As mentioned earlier, the new Shortcuts widget isn’t functional in the latest Chrome Canary release. So, it’ll probably be a while before it shows up on the stable channel. We’ll update this post as soon as the new widgets start rolling out to users.

Google is also testing a new Material You-inspired design for Chrome on Android. The redesign includes a minor facelift for Chrome’s overflow menu and adds Android 12‘s bouncy scrolling to the browser. You can read more about it by following this link.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 may be offered in a “Classic” model

Samsung will launch a new Galaxy smartwatch later this year. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen quite a few leaked renders and promotional images of the upcoming smartwatch. And Samsung recently confirmed that it would run One UI Watch — a new interface based on the new platform developed in partnership with Google. While Samsung is yet to reveal any information about the Galaxy Watch 4’s hardware, we’ve now spotted evidence suggesting that the company may offer two variants — Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

Previous leaks suggested that Samsung would call the smartwatches Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 4. We also saw leaked renders of the supposed Galaxy Watch Active 4. However, leaked promotional material recently confirmed that the renders showed the regular Galaxy Watch 4. This led us to believe that Samsung may only launch one model this year. But we’ve now found references to a second model, called the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, on Thailand’s certification authority NBTC’s website.

The certification listing confirms that Samsung will launch at least three models of the Galaxy Watch 4, two of which will go by the Galaxy Watch 4 Class moniker. The regular Galaxy Watch 4 will have the model number SM-R875F, while the Classic models will have the model numbers SM-R885F and SM-R895F. While the certification listing doesn’t reveal much about the upcoming smartwatches, it confirms that all three models will offer WCDMA/LTE support.

Although we don’t know much about the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic at the moment, it might be a slightly different version of the regular Galaxy Watch 4 with a more traditional watch-like design. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we learn more about the upcoming Galaxy smartwatches.

As mentioned earlier, Samsung hasn’t revealed any official information about the Galaxy Watch 4 series yet. But the company has shared some features you can expect to see in the new One UI Watch operating system. You can learn more about it by following this link.

2. Download the most compatible APK file of the ported Google Camera from the next section and install it.
   • Either use one of the suggested versions for your device or pick one of the generic mods.
   • You may need to install additional XML configuration files.
3. Restart the app.

Carrier suspected of injecting ads into two-factor SMS messages

An unidentified carrier in Australia is suspected of injecting advertisements into two-factor SMS messages, according to Chris Lacy, the developer of Action Launcher. The text shows a Google sign-in verification code in the Google Messages app, which funnily enough, even flagged the text as spam.

This is possible because SMS messages are unencrypted, and therefore, your carrier can read all of them. Injecting advertisements into 2FA texts ensures that the end-user will actually see the advertisement, as it’s assumed they’ll need to use the code to access whatever service they are trying to log in to. While it’s absolutely a scummy move, it’s made possible because of how poorly protected SMS is. A number of employees from Google have chimed in to say that this is definitely not done by Google and that it’s likely the work of whatever carrier Chris Lacy is using. While using SMS for two-factor authentication is technically insecure, for most people, it really does not matter. It’s an extra level of security that’s easily accessible and simple to use for most people, and it’s better than nothing. Most people will not be able to conveniently use hardware-based two-factor authentication, which is why SMS-based 2FA is still so widely used. While SIM swap attacks exist, for most people, they aren’t something they will ever need to worry about. If anything, though, it’s impressive that the Google Messages app still managed to pick up that the message was spam, even though it was sent from a Google phone number.

We have reached out to Google for comment as it was their two-factor message that was tampered with, and we will update this article if we get a response. Chris Lacy is electing not to name the carrier “for privacy reasons”, but it’s important to note that this could happen on any carrier if you’re using SMS. Once RCS is widely adopted and end-to-end encryption for text messages becomes the norm, this will no longer be possible as carriers won’t be able to determine which messages contain two-factor codes and which do not.

Users get Windows 11 running on a Lumia 950 XL and Raspberry Pi 4

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the first Windows 11 preview build to Insiders. For most people, you’ll need to download the latest build through Windows Update using a Windows 10 PC. But a few creative users have gotten the new build running on more unconventional devices. The Raspberry Pi 4 and the Lumia 950 XL have both been spotted running Windows 11, and we expect more to come.

For the Raspberry Pi 4, we’ve only seen a few images shared by Reddit user theSPEEDCAT. The user got the latest build running on the 4GB variant of the Raspberry Pi 4, and they claim performance is better than Windows 10 running on the same hardware. To install Windows 11, theSPEEDCAT simply downloaded the ARM64 version of Windows 11 from UUPdump. Then, they flashed the ISO onto an SD card, following the same procedure you’d use to install Windows 10.

There isn’t much more to it other than the images provided by the user, which show that Windows 11 does in fact seem to run.

If you’re more interested in Microsoft’s old Lumia phones, though, Gustave Monce shared an interesting video on Twitter, too. Monce is known for his attempts at porting PC versions of Windows 10 to the Lumia 950 XL, and in this video, we see he got Windows 11 running on a Lumia 950 XL.

It looks pretty much how you’d expect it to look. It has all the basic Windows 11 features, like the new taskbar, Start menu, and settings app. Even Snap layouts work on the Lumia’s tiny screen. Of course, performance isn’t ideal, but it’s interesting that it runs nonetheless.

It’s impressive to see this device still get support from the community considering it’s almost six years old. And on top of that, Lumia smartphones weren’t even that popular in the first place. However, the fans that were there are clearly passionate enough to keep it alive.

Since Microsoft has released an official ARM64 build of Windows 11, it’s not too surprising to see it get ported to the Raspberry Pi 4 or the Lumia 950 XL. Still, it’s cool to see users jumping through the hoops to actually make it work.
