Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold makes its way to India at almost twice the price

At the CES trade show in January last year, Lenovo showcased the world’s first laptop with a foldable display — the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold. The device featured a unique design, with a 13.3-inch foldable pOLED display, a leather folio case with a kickstand, and a wireless keyboard accessory that instantly turned the device from a tablet to a laptop. The ThinkPad X1 Fold went on sale in the US in September last year at a starting price of $2,499. Now, it has finally landed in the Indian market, but at almost twice the price.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Hands-On: Foldable PCs are the Future

If you missed our previous coverage of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, here’s a quick refresher. The foldable laptop features a 13.3-inch pOLED display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, a peak brightness of 300 nits, and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. It packs an Intel Core i5-L16G7 processor, 8GB of LPDDR4X 4267 MHz RAM, up to a terabyte of M.2 PCIe-NVMe storage, and a 50Wh battery with 65W fast charging support. For connectivity, it features two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, an optional nano-SIM slot, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold front and back on white background

As mentioned earlier, the ThinkPad X1 Fold features a unique design with a lightweight carbon fiber and magnesium alloy chassis covered in black leather. It’s a bit hefty, measuring half an inch thick (unfolded) and weighing slightly less than 1kg. However, as Ben states in his hands-on review, it’s completely serviceable as a tablet when you get used to the weight. If you don’t want to use it as a tablet, you can fold it in half, and it automatically switches to laptop mode. You can use it as a traditional laptop with the on-screen keyboard or the Bluetooth keyboard that Lenovo sells separately.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is available for purchase on Lenovo’s website at a starting price of ₹3,29,000 (~$4,428), almost twice as much as its price in the US. At this price point, I don’t think Lenovo will sell many units in India. But it may appeal to some buyers who have deep pockets and a thirst to stay on the bleeding edge.

YouTube may soon let you play entire videos right on the home page

The YouTube app currently shows previews of videos when you’re browsing through them on the home page. The previews play automatically as you scroll through the home page, giving you a glimpse of the video before you even tap on it. However, the autoplay previews don’t play with sound, and the app doesn’t give you an option to turn on captions. But YouTube has now started testing a new change that will let you play entire videos on the app’s home page, complete with sound, an option to turn on subtitles, and even a progress bar.

The change has already started showing up for some YouTube users, and it adds two new buttons and a progress bar on videos on the home page. The new buttons appear in the top right corner of the video, allowing you to quickly turn on audio and captions on the home page, while the progress bar at the bottom lets you easily scrub through the video.

As you can see in the attached tweet, the mute/unmute and captions buttons are persistent. So you won’t have to enable/disable them for each video on the home screen. This will let you easily browse through the videos without turning them on or off for each video. It’s also worth noting that the mute/unmute button doesn’t work as intended in the clip, suggesting that the feature is still in its early stages of development.

At the moment, Google seems to be testing the change with a small number of YouTube users. We couldn’t replicate it on any of our devices, which leads us to believe that it isn’t tied to the Android version or a specific device. We’ll update this post as soon as the change starts rolling out to more users.

The Mi 11 Lite is a breath of fresh air from the usual Xiaomi phones, which are always laser-focused on winning the spec sheet race. Instead, the new phone focuses on delivering a thoughtful design and premium build quality.

Xiaomi says the Mi 11 Lite is the slimmest and lightest smartphone of 2021 — the phone is just 6.81mm thick and weighs 157g. It also has a near-flat camera module, with the camera bump protruding just 1.77mm from the back.

Mi 11 Lite in three colors

On the front, the Mi 11 Lite flaunts a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz screen refresh rate, 10-bit color depth, 240Hz touch sampling rate, and HDR10 certification. In addition, the panel is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and has a peak brightness of 800nits.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 732G, paired with 6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 expandable storage. Over on the back, you get a triple camera setup headlined by a 64MP primary shooter and flanked by an 8MP ultra-wide and 5MP macro shooters.

There’s a 4,250mAh battery that charges via a 33W fast charger.

Elsewhere, you get dual stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.1, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Wi-Fi 5, and Android 11 with MIUI 12 on top. Unfortunately, the phone skips out on the 3.5mm jack which is quite bold considering the target audience, but for what’s it worth, Xiaomi includes a Type-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter inside the box.

Mi Watch Revolve Active

The Mi Watch Revolve Active is basically a rebranded version of the European Mi Watch that launched last year. The watch comes equipped with a 1.39-inch color AMOLED display with 454 x 454 screen resolution. It offers 117 sports modes and over 110 watch faces. In terms of sensors, you get an optical heart-rate sensor, SpO2 blood oxygen sensor, an ambient light sensor, air pressure sensor, and gyroscope. The watch also has a built-in 12nm GPS chip and supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BDS navigation systems.

Other highlights of the Mi Watch Revolve Active include 5ATM water resistance, 14-day battery life, automatic workout detection, stress monitoring, VO2 MAX, and Alexa support.

Pricing & Availability

The Mi 11 Lite will go on sale in India starting June 28 at a starting price of ₹21,999 for the base model. Meanwhile, the top model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at ₹23,999. Those who pre-order the device can avail flat ₹1500 discount. The phone will be available from Flipkart, Mi.com, and select offline retailers.

The Mi Watch Revolve Active will go on sale from Amazon India and Mi.com starting June 25 at an early bird price of ₹8,999. Once the offer ends, it will retail at ₹9,999.

On top of Xiaomi’s early bird offers, HDFC credit and debit card owners can avail additional ₹1000 discount on the Mi 11 Lite and ₹750 on the smartwatch.

XDA Basics: Are wireless chargers waterproof? Can I safely use them when wet?

Wireless chargers are gaining mainstream popularity as more smartphone makers launch devices with support for them. There are hundreds of them on the market right now. Consumers looking to buy a wireless charger often have a lot of questions. In this article, we’ll try to address one such question – are wireless chargers waterproof? Practically all wireless chargers currently on the market don’t have any kind of water resistance, so the answer is a fairly big “NO”.

No, Wireless Chargers are not waterproof or water-resistant

You have to be really careful with water around wireless chargers as you would be around any other electrical device connected to a power outlet. You could end up electrocuting yourself as well as damaging your appliances if you attempt to use a wet wireless charger, and we strongly dissuade you from doing so.

If your wireless charger somehow ends up getting wet, make sure that it’s completely dry before using it again. Treat it the same way as you would your wired charger. If your smartphone is wet, dry that as well before putting it on a wireless charger.

Keep in mind that charging pads use magnetism to transfer electricity to the device. While we haven’t seen any waterproof wireless chargers from a major manufacturer, it’s possible that such devices may arrive in the future. However, for now, it still is a good idea to keep the entire apparatus away from water as you are connected to the wall outlet. Best not to risk it until and unless a manufacturer can provide some form of guarantee on the safety of their accessory.

How do Qi Wireless Chargers work?

RAVPower Magnetic Wireless Charger

Qi wireless chargers are relatively uncomplicated pieces of hardware. They use inductive charging to transfer power from a charger to your phone. The wireless chargers mainly include two key components – a PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) and a coil. Apart from these two things, the wireless chargers also need a power adapter that is used to convert the AC current from your wall outlet to the DC current for the charger.

The PCBA in the wireless charger takes the DC current from the power adapter and uses the coil to create an alternating electromagnetic field. This field creates power in the receiver coil of your phone and the same is fed to the battery. During this process, some of the power is lost in the form of heat, which is one of the reasons why wireless charging is slower than the wired charging. You’ll notice this heat on your phone as it’ll become hot while charging. This is normal and it isn’t too much heat. Also, the wireless chargers come with safeguards that’ll stop the charging process if they detect excessive heat.

The Qi wireless chargers typically offer a minimum charging speed of 5W. You’ll also see chargers in the market that offer 7.5W, 10W, and 15W charging speeds. For charging speeds faster than 15W, manufacturers normally use proprietary technology. Thus, such chargers are only able to offer these higher speeds to very select devices. Before buying any wireless charger, make sure you know what charging speeds your phone can support.

    Anker PowerWave 15 Pad

    Universal fast charging

The Anker PowerWave 15 Pad comes with 5W, 7.5W, and 15W wireless charging modes. If your phone supports faster wireless charging, this Anker charger will be able to provide it. However, it doesn’t come with a power adapter.
    Belkin 3-in-1 Wireless Charger

    For three devices

When single and dual chargers aren’t enough, you can get this Belkin 3-in-1 charger. It can charge your Qi-compatible phone, earbuds, and smartwatch at the same time. The charger supports up to 7.5W charging for the phones and 5W for other devices.
    Spigen wireless charger

    A convertible

Prefer the stand mode on some days, and the flat mode on the others? The Spigen Wireless Charger can do both for you. It also supports up to 15W fast wireless charging. Moreover, there's a non-slip pad on it to prevent your phone from slipping while charging.

Hopefully, we were able to answer your question about whether wireless chargers are waterproof. If you would like to know more about wired fast charging, make sure you explore our detailed explainer on the topic. We’ve also published a list of the best fast chargers for Samsung Galaxy S21 on the market right now — do check that out as well.

It’s not just you: Google App is crashing for many Android users

If you have noticed the Google app on your Android phone suddenly crashing and freezing, you are not alone. It appears a recent update to the Google app has introduced a bug that completely renders the app unusable.

The issue seems to be widespread, with multiple Android users reporting they’re unable to use the Google app after installing the most recent version. The app keeps showing a “Google keeps stopping” pop up every few seconds, and everything from Google Assitant, Search, Google Lens, and so on fails to start.

If you’re affected by this buggy update, uninstalling the latest update should fix the issue. To do so, head to “Apps” or “Applications” from your device Settings, scroll to the Google app and uninstall its latest updates by clicking on the three-dot menu located in the top right corner. If the problem persists, also try clearing app data and cache.

Meanwhile, if you’re not affected yet, it’ll be a good idea to disable auto-updates for the Google app from the Google Play Store.

The crashing issue doesn’t seem to be limited to any particular brand or device. It’s also not limited to the beta version of the Google app, as many affected users are running the stable version.

We have reached out to Google for a comment and will update this article if we hear from the company.

Apple has reportedly ended production of the iPhone 12 Mini

Writing has been on the wall for some time now. Apple’s attempt to revive the small phone market with the iPhone 12 Mini has not met with overwhelming consumer demand. Following multiple reports about the iPhone 12 Mini’s poor sales performance, the Cupertino giant has reportedly stopped manufacturing new units of the device.

A new report from Taiwanese research firm TrendForce has revealed that the smaller iPhone 12 is no longer in production anymore. The device reached End-of-Life in the second quarter following disappointing sales performance, the report says.

Apple is expected to focus on driving sales of the three non-mini models in the iPhone 12s series in view of the fact that the iPhone 12 Mini (which reached End-of-Life ahead of time in 2Q21) suffered disappointing sales performances compared to other models in the iPhone 12 family.

As the report points out, the smaller phone didn’t fare well as its bigger siblings, such as the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, leaving Apple no choice but to discontinue its production. This doesn’t come as a big surprise, though. Earlier reports suggested that the iPhone 12 Mini only accounted for just 5% of total iPhone 12 series sales and that Apple might stop producing new units by the second quarter of 2021 if things didn’t improve much.

Apple iPhone 12 Mini Hands-on: It’s so tiny

The iPhone 12 Mini was launched alongside the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. It was targeted at users who preferred a small form factor but didn’t want to compromise on performance or camera quality. It’s also cheaper, starting at $699 as compared to the standard iPhone 12, which retails for $799. Apple even released a new Purple color variant for the iPhone 12 Mini in April.

Apple still has the phone listed on its website, so it should continue to be on sale till the inventory lasts.

Although the iPhone 12 Mini didn’t perform as well as Apple hoped, rumors have it the Cupertino giant still plans to press forward with four iPhone models, including a Mini model for the iPhone 13 release.
