MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

1. Local Update method:
   1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
   2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
   3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
   4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
   5. Wait for the update to install.
2. Recovery method:
   1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
   2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
   3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
   4. Wait for the update to install.
   5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

ASUS is bringing back the headphone jack with the ZenFone 8

After launching the ROG Phone 5 lineup earlier this year, Taiwanese smartphone OEM ASUS is gearing up to launch its much-awaited ZenFone 8 series. The company will host a virtual launch event for the flagship lineup early next month, but it has already started sharing some key details about the upcoming devices.

Just a couple of days ago, ASUS shared a teaser on Twitter that gave us a sneak peek at the design of one of the phones in the lineup. The teaser revealed that at least one of the phones in the ZenFone 8 series would feature a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera, which led us to believe that the company may drop its iconic flip camera mechanism from the upcoming devices. Now, ASUS has shared yet another teaser on Twitter, which reveals that the headphone jack will make a comeback on the ZenFone 8 series. It’s worth noting that ASUS was one of the few manufacturers that offered a headphone jack on its flagship smartphones as late as 2019. However, the company removed the feature from its flagship ZenFone 7 last year. ASUS told us in a briefing that it wasn’t able to include the headphone jack on the ZenFone 8 due to the lack of PCB space as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865’s Snapdragon X55 modem wasn’t integrated into the SoC. But now that the Snapdragon 888 features an integrated modem-RF system, the company is bringing back the headphone jack on the ZenFone 8.

In case you haven’t been keeping up with our coverage of the ZenFone 8 series, we’ve previously learned that the lineup will include a new compact flagship with a 5.9-inch 120Hz display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chip. While the compact device likely won’t feature the flip camera mechanism, recent leaks suggest that one of the phones in the lineup, called the ZenFone 8 Flip, may retain the unique solution. At the moment, we haven’t seen any other concrete info about the ZenFone 8 series. But we’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we learn more.

Apple iMac 2021 with M1 goes on pre-order, here’s where you can book one

The iMac received a well-needed upgrade this year as Apple announced a slick new version at its special event earlier this month. Powered by the company’s in-house chipset, the M1 Silicon, you can now pre-order the new iMac from Apple.com, Amazon, or Best Buy. Additionally, Apple has also started pre-orders for the new M1-powered iPad Pro range.

Pricing and availability

Pre-orders for the new 2021 iMac begin today, April 30, with shipments expected to arrive in the second half of May 2021.

The new iMac is being offered in three configurations starting at $1,299 (₹1,19,900) for the 8-Core CPU, 7-Core GPU option that features 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage. Moving up, you can opt for the 8-Core CPU and 8-Core GPU option for $1,499 (₹1,39,900). This one also comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. The top-variant featuring an 8-Core CPU, 8-Core GPU, 8GB RAM and 512GB storage is priced at $1,699 (₹1,59,900).

The new iMac comes in a variety of colors reminiscent of the iMac G3 from 1998. It is extremely thin, at just 11.5mm, and is powered by Apple’s ARM-based M1 chipset that is being used on the MacBook Pro 13, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and recently, the new iPad Pro.

There is a new 24-inch Retina display, with a 4.5K resolution of 4480×2520 which makes it super sharp. It also has a DCI-P3-wide gamut, over one billion colors, 500-nits of brightness, and TrueTone support for auto white balance. The new design brings a total of seven new colors including Blue, Green, Pink, Silver, Yellow, Orange, and Purple. The entire system rests on a thin aluminum stand and can be tilted at various angles. On the inside, the M1 chipset is embedded on a tiny logic board, along with a dual-fan cooling system. The new iMac offers excellent performance over previous models offering 2x faster graphics performance on Adobe Photoshop and Affinity and the ability to edit up to five 4K streams in Final Cut Pro at once, or an 8K stream, without any drop in frames. Apple is offering the iMac with up to 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD, although Apple’s official product page does mention options of 1TB and 2TB as well.

Apple has also updated the camera experience as there is a new camera that supports 1080p resolution with a larger sensor and improved low-light performance. Paired with ISP (image signal processor) on the M1 SoC, users can expect the best quality while doing video calls. The new iMac also includes a triple microphone setup along with noise cancellation for improved audio quality while making calls. There is also a new six-speaker setup with two pairs of subwoofers along with high-performance tweeters and spatial audio by Dolby Atmos.

There are a total of four USB-C ports on the iMac two of which support Thunderbolt and for power, there is a single cable that runs down to a power brick that can also accommodate an ethernet cable.

Complementing the new iMac, Apple also announced color-matched accessories including the new Magic Keyboard with support for new emoji, Apple Spotlight, dictation, do-not-disturb, a lock key, and built-in Touch ID for quick sign-in. There is also the newly-designed Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad that comes with similar color accents that are available on the new iMac.

Apple iPad Pro with M1 now available for pre-order from Apple.com, Amazon and Best Buy

Apple’s latest and most powerful iPad ever, the new iPad Pro powered by the Apple M1 Silicon chip, is now up for pre-orders. You can head over to Apple’s official website, or alternatively, book one from Best Buy or Amazon. Announced at its ‘Spring Loaded’ event on April 20, the new iPad Pro series continues to come in 12.9-inch and 11-inch sizes. These also come with a bunch of new upgrades, including support for Thunderbolt and USB4, a mini LED display, 5G connectivity, and up to 2TB of storage.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders for the new iPad Pro series begin today, April 30, with shipments expected to arrive in the second half of May 2021.

The biggest change on the new iPad Pro range is the M1 chip. Just like its new Mac lineup, Apple is now using its most powerful chipset on the iPad Pro. The in-house chipset comes with an 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores along with an 8-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple will be offering the new iPad with 8GB of RAM on 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options while the 1TB and 2TB storage options get 16GB of RAM. This makes it as powerful as MacBook Pro 13, but running on iPadOS 14.

The larger 12.9-inch model also introduces a new type of display. The ‘Liquid Retina XDR’ makes use of a mini-LED panel that uses tiny LEDs as the backlight source. According to Apple, the display has over 10,000 mini LEDs offering up to 1600-nits of peak brightness, making it one of the brightest displays on an iPad. The smaller 11-inch model gets a standard display capable of 600-nits of brightness.

The update also includes the Ethereum hash rate limiter, which was previously introduced during the launch of the RTX 3060 GPU, and was ‘accidentally’ removed by NVIDIA via a beta driver update release.

However, this time, NVIDIA has tweaked the limiter so that future RTX 3060 cards will require this particular driver (or newer) to run efficiently and prevent them from using older drivers that might allow them to bypass NVIDIA’s hash limiter. This means that RTX 3060 cards that are shipped after mid-May will be fully restricted against Ethereum mining at full speeds. NVIDIA is obviously very quiet about how the restriction is implemented. However, AnandTech suggests that the company has most likely blown an eFuse or two so that the fresh batch of RTX 3060 GPUs can’t be used with older BIOSes. By doing so, NVIDIA can have the newer BIOS enforce the newer driver requirement, thereby enforcing the Ethereum mining limiter.

Right before hitting stores in February, NVIDIA had announced that the RTX 3060 would include a restriction for Ethereum crypto mining. The company added this restriction to make the graphics card less attractive to crypto miners, who have apparently been stocking GPUs amidst the high demands and low supplies. Sadly the plan backfired when NVIDIA released the GeForce 470.05 beta drivers through the Windows Insider Program, which did not include the above-mentioned limiter and was easily exploited by miners and alike. Hopefully, NVIDIA’s second attempt at nerfing the mining capabilities on the RTX 3060 will be more successful.

New Chromebooks will soon come with Meet and Chat apps preinstalled

Google’s Meet and Chat apps will soon come pre-installed on Chrome OS devices. The company is currently working on adding this functionality to Chrome OS, which will automatically install Progress Web Apps (PWAs) for both these services on new Chromebooks.

9to5Google recently spotted a merged commit on the Chromium Gerrit highlighting two new feature flags. The commit’s description reveals that the upcoming feature flags will preinstall “Meet and Chat PWAs on Chrome OS.” While users can currently install Android apps for Google Meet and Chat on most Chromebooks, pre-installing the Android apps would leave users with less storage space on their new Chromebooks right from the get-go. Therefore, Google is opting to install PWAs on Chrome OS devices, which should help prevent storage bloat.

As of now, it isn’t exactly clear how users would be able to change the aforementioned feature flags before setting up their Chromebooks. But we suspect that these flags will be enabled by default when the change goes into effect. Once the change is live, new Chrome OS devices and those that have been factory reset will have both apps preinstalled by default. In case you don’t use Google Meet and/or Chat, you’ll also get the option to uninstall the PWAs after you complete the setup process.

The report further reveals that the change is scheduled to be completed in time for Chrome OS 92, which is set to release late in July this year. However, it may not roll out with Chrome OS 92 if the developers hit a snag. If it does, new Chrome OS devices with Chrome OS 92 or those reset after the update should have Chat and Meet preinstalled. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as the change is live on a stable Chrome OS release.
