Apple’s new iPad Pro has a super-fast M1 chip and 5G support

Apple was widely expected to launch a new iPad Pro during its live event today, and sure enough, we finally have details about the new model. It’s a massive upgrade, bringing features from Apple’s new Macs to a tablet form factor.

The new iPad Pro doesn’t look too different than the existing model at a glance, but there are many changes on the inside. For starters, Apple is bringing its M1 chip (which is now shipping on several Mac computers) to the iPad Pro, giving the tablet yet another performance boost over the competition. The 8-core CPU gives the new model a 50% speed boost over the previous iPad Pro, according to Apple.

The new iPad Pro also has support for 5G (including millimeter-wave 5G), USB 4, and Thunderbolt. Complimenting the upgraded internal hardware is a new 2TB storage configuration, so professional photo and video work won’t involve quite as much cloud storage. Speaking of video and photos, the new iPad Pro has an ultra-wide 12MP front camera and LIDAR support.

Apple is bringing an upgraded mini-LED display to the new iPad Pro, nicknamed the ‘Liquid Retina XDR.’ It has a 120Hz touch-sensing rate, tap-to-wake, a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits, Apple Pencil support, “Extreme Dynamic Range,” a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and factory calibration. Some features may vary between the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros, including the resolution.

The new iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 11-inch model, or $1,099 for the 12.9-inch version. You can pre-order it starting April 30th, and full availability starts in the second half of May.

Apple announces new M1-powered iMac

The iMac is one of Apple’s most important products, and the company has always been rather “safe” in its design. An iMac released in 2020 is indistinguishable at a glance from an iMac released in 2015. That’s changed with this year’s iMac, announced at the company’s “Spring Loaded” event in 2021. This 2021 iMac comes with the new Apple Silicon M1 chipset, which powered the company’s new Macbooks released late last year.

The new iMac has a number of improvements over last year’s model, with the most noticeable change being its all-new design. It’s colored on both the front and the back, with the front being a single sheet of glass covering the surface. The M1 system-on-chip features a smaller logic board, with the thermal system being replaced by two large fans. Apple says it runs extremely quiet, coming in at under 10 decibels. Its overall volume has been dropped by 50%. According to the company as well, it’s an 85-times faster CPU for faster image and video editing over previous models and has 2-times faster graphics in apps like Photoshop and Affinity. The company claims that it can edit up to 5 4K streams in Final Cut Pro at once, or 1 8K stream, without dropping any frames. Apps can leverage the 16-core neural engine in the M1 chipset for faster machine learning as well.

For the display, the company has packed in an expansive 24-inch Retina display, with a resolution of 4480×2520. It has a DCI-P3-wide gamut, over one billion colors, and a brightness of 500 nits. TrueTone support is also present for auto white balance, and there’s a low-reflective coating over the display. Apple says that this is a 4.5K display.

The camera, microphone, and speakers are revamped too. Featuring the “best camera ever in a Mac”, it has a larger sensor than previous models for better low-light performance in 1080p. The M1’s image signal processor (ISP) enables computational enhancements for video, and operates at over 1 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Apple claims that this is the best microphone on a Mac, featuring three microphones for beamforming to eliminate background noise. Finally, the iMac’s sound system has been improved, packing 2 pairs of subwoofers for better bass, balanced with a high-performance tweeter. It’s a 6-speaker system overall and has spatial audio by Dolby Atmos.

For connectivity, the new iMac features 4 USB-C ports, 2 of which are Thunderbolt ports. For power, there’s a 2-meter color-matched woven cable in the box with a small adapter, and an ethernet cable can be plugged in through the power cable.

For the new M1-powered iMacs, you can even pick up new accessories that are color-matched to your iMac. There’s a brand new Magic Keyboard, and you can pick up a newly-designed Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. Both of these devices work wirelessly. The new Magic Keyboard supports new emoji, Apple Spotlight, dictation, do-not-disturb, and a lock key. There is also Touch ID in the top right with fast user switching so that you can quickly switch accounts just by scanning your finger.

The new iMac will be available for pre-order from April 30th and will be available in the second half of May. Pricing is as follows:

Apple TV 4K revealed with A12 Bionic chip and new Siri remote

Apple has been selling TV boxes for a long time, with occiasional hardware and software refreshes that keep it competitive with similar products from Amazon, Roku, and Google. Today, Apple revealed a new Apple TV designed for 4K playback, with both upgraded hardware and software.

The new Apple TV 4K is powered by the same A12 Bionic chip that powers Apple’s current iPhone lineup, giving the new model “a significant boost in graphics performance, video decoding, and audio processing.” HHDR, high frame rates (Apple didn’t give a specific number), and Dolby Vision video are all supported. Many other streaming boxes already support HDR and Dolby Vision, but Apple also allows an iPhone to function as a color calibration tool, which is definitely unique.

The new Siri Remote has a directional pad that also functions as a touchpad. There are also power and mute buttons for your TV, similar to the remotes that ship with most Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices. The remote’s microphone gives you access to Siri for controlling smart home devices, checking sports scores, and more.

The Apple TV 4K will become available for pre-order on April 30th, with full retail availability starting in the second half of May “in more than 30 countries and regions.” It will cost $179 in the United States, and if you want to upgrade your existing Apple TV with the new remote, that will be available separately for $59.

Apple announces AirTag for finding your lost items

After months — no, years — of rumors, Apple has finally unveiled AirTag. The location tracking puck is designed to help people find their lost devices; you can attach AirTag to everything from keys to backpacks to a camera strap. Track anything and everything. AirTag launches on April 30 for $29, or you can get a four pack for $99.

AirTag integrates with Apple’s Find My App and Find My network.

iPhone 12 will get a new purple color on April 30

Apple is hosting its long-awaited launch event today for several products, but the company’s first announcement today wasn’t something entirely-new. There’s a new purple color for the iPhone 12, and it will be available soon.

During today’s event, Apple revealed that the iPhone 12 will get a new purple color, joining the existing black, blue, green, and red designs. The purple color has a “precision-milled back design,” according to Apple.

The new color will be available for pre-order this Friday, April 30th. Apple didnt’ mention pricing, but it will presumably follow the same MSRPs as the other colors: $729 for the iPhone 12 Mini, $829 for the regular iPhone 12, $999 for the iPhone 12 Pro, and $1,099 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones now available in limited edition Silent White

Sony has announced a limited edition white version of its WH-1000XM4 headphones. The new headphones are set to launch in May and coincide with Sony’s 75th anniversary. You’ll be able to find them across Europe for €430/£400 while supplies last.

According to Sony, the new “Silent White” WH-1000XM4 headphones are designed to “reflect the concept of silence and serenity,” offering the same noise cancelling technology we’ve come to expect from the company. The headphones feature a pearlescent finish to the topcoat, which Sony claims creates a sense of depth and a luxurious touch. The extra coat of paint apparently makes the new headphones even more stain-resistant than other colors in the same lineup.

Similar to the black and silver WH-1000XM4, the new headphones feature the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 with Dual Noise Sensor Technology, which Sony said now includes a new algorithm. The headphones also feature a new Bluetooth audio System on a Chip that adapts to noise, music, and acoustic characteristics in real time. And the headphones also feature Edge-AI and DSEE Extreme, which promise to improve the quality of audio that’s digitally compressed.

In addition to slightly tweaked internals, the WH-1000XM4 in white offer 30 hours of battery life and support hands-free operation with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. There’s also support for adaptive playback, so the headphones know if they’re being worn or not. Finally, there’s an Adaptive Sound Control feature that can sense where you are and what you’re doing and adjust the ambient sound settings accordingly.

The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones are among the best on the market, and they look great in the new Silent White color. The fact that these are limited — Sony is only selling them between May 2021 and August 2021 — will likely make them highly sought after, so jump on them quick. Unfortunately, Sony makes no mention of the new headphones launching in the U.S.

Android 11 with One UI 3.1 arrives unofficially on the Samsung Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30

One UI 3.1 looks to be the best version of Samsung’s custom Android skin yet. With a number of new productivity features and several UI/UX enhancements, the Korean OEM’s flavor of Android is looking better than ever. If that has you excited, then you’ll be happy to know that you can flash an unofficial port of the One UI 3.1-based Android 11 firmware right now on the Samsung Galaxy M20 and the Galaxy M30, courtesy of XDA Senior Member VDavid003.

Dubbed as “TreeUI+,” the One UI 3.1 port is based on the Exynos-powered Samsung Galaxy S20’s G980FXXS6DUBA build of Android 11, and it requires your Galaxy M20 or Galaxy M30 to have TWRP installed before you can flash it. If the name of the ROM sounds familiar, it’s because the same developer previously ported Android 11 with One UI 3.1 to the Galaxy A7/A8/A8+ 2018 under the “TreeUI” moniker. The updated version of the port not only supports all these devices but also comes with a plethora of fixes as mentioned below:

• Headphone jack fully fixed
• Probably fixed AROMA freezes
• Added Photo and Video editor
• Fixed S Notes
• Fixed WiFi QR codes
• Removed Super Fast Charging, only left Fast charging in place, since we don’t have Super Fast Charging
• Added experimental VoLTE
• Added Dual Messenger
• Fixed booting on non-treble Canadian and Korean A8

Since this is a port, we are expected to see some features work while others do not. For instance, the stock Samsung Camera app is still broken. Face unlock and the torch intensity control are buggy as well. Regardless, you’ll be getting a lot of new goodies in the latest One UI build, so if you’re interested, download it below.

Download TreeUI+ based on Android 11: Galaxy M20 ||| Galaxy M30

It’s common for us to see vanilla AOSP ports created for various smartphones, but this is something entirely different. Both the Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 debuted with Samsung Experience 9.5 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo, hence the One UI 2.0 release based on Android 10 was their second major Android OS update. There’s no guarantee the devices will get further major software updates from Samsung, which is exactly why the unofficial Android 11 port with One UI 3.1 is quite a significant aftermarket development for the owners of the Galaxy M20/M30.
