One UI 3.1 update with Android 11 rolls out for Galaxy M30s and Galaxy A60

Samsung has been doing a phenomenal job at distributing the One UI 3.1 software to its smartphone portfolio. From the top-of-the-line flagships to cheap, budget-friendly offerings, Samsung has been spreading the One UI 3.1 love across all segments. Late last month, we saw the One UI 3.1 rollout going live for the Galaxy A51, Galaxy A21s, and Galaxy M21. Now, two more Galaxy phones are joining the club. Samsung has started seeding the stable One UI 3.1 update to the Galaxy M30s and Galaxy A60 in several markets.

As reported by several Galaxy M30s users on Samsung Community, the stable One UI 3.1 rollout is currently underway for the device. The screenshots shared by the users who have received the update show the update carries build number M307FXXU4CUD1 and weighs 744MB in size. Besides One UI 3.1, the new update also brings along the updated security patches from March 2021.

A screenshot taken on Galaxy M31 showing the One UI 3.1 update prompt

Notably, the Galaxy M30s has already received Android 11 via the One UI 3.0 update back in February. The One UI 3.1 update is currently rolling out to Galaxy M30s users in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It should be making its way to other regions soon. If you live in the aforementioned markets and haven’t received an update notification on your Galaxy M30s yet, head over to Settings > Software update to check if it’s available for you.

Separately, SamMobile reports that Samsung is also seeding a fresh update to the Galaxy A60 that finally brings Android 11 to the device. It’s unclear whether it’s a One UI 3.0 or One UI 3.1 update, but going by Samsung’s pattern of skipping the One UI 3.0 version on many recently updated phones, we’re inclined to believe it’s the latter. In any case, the update is identified by the build number A6060ZCU3CUD3 and also carries the March 2021 security patches. At the time being, the Android 11 update has only gone live in China. Samsung will probably expand the rollout to more markets in the coming weeks.

Google Chrome 90 brings HTTPS as default, support for AV1 encoder, and more

Google Chrome 90 is now rolling out on the stable channel. The latest release incorporates many features and improvements that were being previewed in the stable channel, including support for AV1 encoder, forwarding users to HTTPS versions of websites by default and more.

First and foremost, the address bar in Chrome 90 (via Android Police) now defaults to the HTTPS version. What this means is that when you enter a URL in the address bar, Chrome will forward you to the HTTPS version by default. It will fall back to the HTTP version only if it can’t find the HTTPS version. Besides improving security and privacy, this new change will also speed up the initial page loading time on encrypted sites as Chrome will no longer have to redirect from http:// to https://, which was the default behavior in the earlier versions. Chrome has been testing this change since the start of this year, and Google promised last month that it would finally implement the new behavior with the stable Chrome 90 release.

Moving on, Chrome 90 is also gaining support for the AV1 encoder that will substantially boost video quality in WebRTC-based video conferencing apps on super slow internet connections. Support for the AV1 encoder was added to Chrome 90 beta last month, and it’s now live in the stable version. Google says the AV1 encoder will allow users to use video calling apps on a connection as slow as 30Kbps.

Another interesting change that Google is testing in Chrome 90 is the ability to copy and paste files on websites. Instead of relying on the drag and drop functionality or manually navigating to the file path using the file picker, the new feature will let you copy a file to the clipboard (Ctrl+c) and then transfer it to a webpage by pressing Ctrl+v. In simple words, you’ll be able to attach and upload files on websites just like how you copy-paste files across folders. For example, if you want to attach a PDF to your email, just copy the file and hit Ctrl+v in the email window. This feature is currently not live in Chrome 90 out-of-the-box but can be tried out by enabling the flag: Chrome://flags/#clipboard-filenames.

Besides the above changes, Chrome 90 also brings numerous improvements and changes for web developers, such as a new value for the CSS to prevent overflow, renaming Feature Policy to Permissions Policy, a new way to implement Shadow DOM in HTML, and more. You can read about all of these developer-facing changes at length in the official blog post.

Chrome 90 has started rolling out to the stable channel on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android.

Google Photos’ upcoming search filters will help you find photos quickly

After rolling out a new advanced video editor in Google Photos last month, Google is now preparing to add search filters to the app. Once the feature is live, these search filters will appear right beneath the search bar and let you refine your search with a single tap.

As you can see in the following screenshot shared by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane), Google Photos will let you combine multiple search filters to help you quickly find the exact photo you’re looking for. The app already lets you refine your search based on location, people, and things. And these filters will add another layer of refinement to the app’s search capabilities and look for selfies, videos, archived photos, and motion photos with specific people or things.

You’ll also be able to club these new search filters with the Places filter to find pictures clicked at a particular location. All photos that meet the criteria will then appear right beneath the search bar. In its current state, the feature offers four new search filters. However, Google may add more filters by the time it rolls out with a future update.

Google hasn’t shared any official information about these new search filters in the Google Photos app so far. But since the feature looks to be near completion, it should start rolling out to users in the next few weeks. We’ll update this post as soon as the feature begins rolling out on the stable channel.

Over the last few months, Google has rolled out several new features for Google Photos. These include tighter Google Lens integration, a new Explore tab and Favorites shortcuts for the web client, new gestures to zoom in on videos, and more. You can learn more about these features by following the respective links.

Microsoft is killing cross-device syncing from the Timeline feature on Windows 10

Windows may be one of the most popular desktop platforms, but not every part of the OS sees as much popularity or use. A case in point is the Timeline feature on Windows 10 that was added in the April 2018 update to the OS. The feature aims to show you current and past activities across a time period on devices connected to the same Microsoft account, and is accessed through Windows + Tab key combination. Microsoft is now killing the cross-device syncing function on the Timeline feature with the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build.

With the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21359, Timeline will no longer upload new activity to the associated Microsoft account (via Thurrot).

If you have your activity history synced across your devices through your Microsoft account (MSA), you will no longer have the option to upload new activity in Timeline. AAD-connected accounts won’t be impacted. To view web history, Edge and other browsers have the option to look back at recent web activities. You can also view recently used files using OneDrive and Office. Note: Timeline and all your local activity history still remain on Windows 10.

Timeline and all local activity history will remain on Windows 10, it’s just that you will no longer be able to use the advertised “pick up where you left off” functionality with Timeline. This cross-device history and activity syncing was one of the highlighting features of Timeline, spanning across Windows 10 computers and Android devices using the Microsoft Launcher. But Timeline was removed from the Microsoft Launcher in 2020, and now this particular change makes it a shell of the intended vision behind the feature.

Considering the fact that most people do not even recall that such a function used to exist, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Microsoft does end up axing Timeline as a whole. For now, if you do use the feature, you will have to contend with the fact that cross-device syncing will go away when the update hits the stable channel.

The best laptops under $600 to buy in 2021: HP, Microsoft Surface, Acer and more!

Laptops today come in all shapes and sizes, as well as different price points. Honestly, it isn’t very difficult to get a decent notebook today even if you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Today we’ve got a very specific list of recommended laptops that are available under $600. Now you might say there are loads of options, but to make things interesting, our recommendations only include options that priced between $500-$600.

At that price point, you aren’t going to get a mighty powerful machine, but it hits the perfect spot for an entry to mid-range laptop that can attend to most of your everyday needs, especially if your work doesn’t go beyond typing, making presentations and light photo editing. We’ve added a good mix of options from Microsoft, HP, and even a Chromebook from Acer. Check them out!

HP Pavilion x360 14

HP Pavilion x360 14 2021

The new Pavilion x360 series recently got an update with HP bringing the latest Intel 11th-gen processors. It comes with a smaller footprint than before with a width of 209mm down from 221mm, which means there is also a drop in the overall weight, from 1.61kg to 1.5kg. The base model comes with a Core i3-1125G4 with 8GB of memory and 256GB of SSD storage, which is priced at $550. For that price, you are also getting a 14-inch touchscreen display with a full-HD resolution, a fingerprint scanner, an HDMI port so you can connect it to a monitor, a USB Type-C port, and Wi-Fi 6. HP also gets marks for sustainability as it makes use of post-consumer recycled and ocean-bound plastic along with recycled aluminum.

    HP Pavilion x360 14
The HP Pavilion x360 14 should be your pick if you are looking for a premium 2-in-1 laptop at this price range.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

The most affordable and lightest Surface laptop offered by Microsoft, the Surface Laptop Go is a tiny workhorse that is great for students and basic professional use cases. Now it does make sense to go for the higher tier model that comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, but if you are on a tight budget or just need a solid laptop for your kids, then the base variant should serve just as well. It comes with 4GB of memory with 64GB of storage, but you do get an Intel Core i5-1035G1 quad-core processor and a fingerprint reader embedded in the power button for quickly signing into the laptop. You also get a comparatively good design language since most laptops in this range feature a sub-par build to cut costs.

    Microsoft Surface Laptop Go
Suited for light productivity and basic browsing and multimedia consumption, the Surface Laptop Go is a neat looking laptop that is great for students or even your kids trying to cope up with learning from home.

HP Laptop 15

HP Laptop 15 2021

HP’s entry-level laptops aren’t bad for the price especially since the company has started offering the laptop with the latest 11th-gen Tiger Lake processors with Iris Xe graphics. Notably, it is also one of the only laptops that we could find offering a Core i5 processor under $600. The laptop comes with a 15.6-inch IPS anti-glare display with a full-HD resolution, 256GB of PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, and 8GB of memory. HP claims a battery life of up to 7 hours when being used for productivity and up to 9 hours of video playback. Apart from offering fast Wi-Fi 6, the laptop comes loaded with an SD card reader, a full-size HDMI port, a USB Type-C port, and two standard USB Type-A ports. It does come with a plastic build, but that is a given at this price range.

    HP Laptop 15
The new HP Laptop 15 is one of the only laptops on the market priced below $600 that offers you the latest 11th-gen quad-core Intel Core i5 processor.

Acer Chromebook Spin 713

acer chromebook spin 713

The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 has been rated as one of the best Chromebooks you should buy if you are looking for top-tier performance. It is also on our list of the best laptops to buy in 2021. The good thing is, the base model is available under a budget of $600. Of course, being the base model, there are some sacrifices that need to be made as you get 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 10th-gen Intel Core-i3 processor. You do however retain the 13.5-inch sharp 2256 x 1504 resolution touchscreen display with a 2-in-1 form factor. The laptop also meets Intel’s “Project Athena” standard which brings you features like quick wake and long battery life.

Microsoft Surface Go 2

Microsoft Surface Go 2

Another Surface product from the house of Microsoft and this is the smallest one under the company’s portfolio. The tiny 10-inch tablet is super convenient to carry around or you can easily slide it into your bag, as it honestly doesn’t take up a lot of space. Since it is a very compact PC, it does offer limited performance as it comes with an Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y processor. But the good thing is that Microsoft is offering the base model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which sounds like a pretty solid deal. You do need to note that the price you pay is only for the Surface Go 2 tablet as the Type Keyboard cover costs an extra $130. The Surface Go 2 also offers full support for the Surface Pen so you can quickly scribble down your notes or just casual doodling.

    Microsoft Surface Go 2
The Surface Go 2 is the smallest Surface product from Microsoft that shrinks down the experience of the original Surface Pro into a compact 10-inch form-factor.

We also have a list of some of the best cheap laptops that you should buy in 2021, and if you are looking into budget gaming laptops, make sure you check our recommendations on that too. Also, we are now slowly moving into the 5G era, so that gives us the perfect opportunity to list some of the best laptops that support 5G connectivity.
