Paranoid Android releases Android 11 builds for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Mix 3, 8 Pro, and 8 Explorer Edition

Paranoid Android is one of the longest-running custom ROM projects, and even though the team has had a few breaks over the years, Paranoid Android is still a popular choice for modders. The ROM currently offers Android 11 testing builds for select devices, and now four more phones have joined the party.

Paranoid Android ‘Ruby’ builds, based on Android 11, are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Mi Mix 3, Mi 8 Pro, and Mi 8 Explorer Edition (the latter two have a combined build). For all devices, the installation process involves flashing the MIUI Android 10 stable firmware, then formatting data, and installing the appropriate .zip file. There are no known bugs for any of the ports right now, but that could change over the coming days and weeks as more people download the releases.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Forums ||| Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Forums ||| Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro Forums

The new ports are labeled as ‘Dev 1’ releases, so while there might be a few rough edges, they should be more stable than Paranoid Android’s earlier alpha-quality Android 11 releases. The ROM is based on the CAF (CodeAurora Forum) base, which has additional optimizations for Snapdragon-based Android devices.

Unlike some other custom ROMs, the Play Store and other Google apps are pre-installed, so you don’t need an extra Gapps zip. However, this also means Paranoid Android isn’t the best choice for a de-Googled phone. If you’re looking to go down that road, LineageOS might be your best option, which has its own suite of applications that can supplement some Google applications (e.g., a mail client and music player).

Paranoid Android has been slowly rolling out Android 11 builds over the past few months. The team started with the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro in November of last year, then expanded to more OnePlus and Xiaomi phones in December. Here’s hoping the team can add more phones to the list soon — if you’d like to help, check the above-linked forum threads for ways you can help and donate.

Xiaomi could be working on a ‘POCO M2 Reloaded’

Xiaomi’s POCO-branded phones have been a hit in India (and some other regions), as they often carry decent specifications at bargain-bin prices. The POCO M2 was released in India only a few months ago, specifically in September 2020, and now it seems a re-release under the name “POCO M2 Reloaded” may be on the way.

Kacper Skrzypek, who goes by kacskrz on our forums and is a well-known Xiaomi tipster, found evidence pointing to a ‘POCO M2 Reloaded’ that’s in development. A string with the model name was discovered in MIUI code, though no other information about the phone is known at this time.

— Kacper Skrzypek (@kacskrz) March 25, 2021

The POCO M2 arrived in September with a 6.53-inch 1080p display, a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage (expandable through a microSD card slot), a 5,000mAh battery with 18W charging support, three rear cameras (plus a depth sensor), and MIUI 11 based on Android 10. It was nearly identical to the Indian variant of the Redmi 9 Prime, though that phone only had 4GB RAM instead of the 6GB on the POCO M2. At launch, the POCO M2 was priced at ₹10,999 (~$149) for the base 64GB model or ₹12,499 (~$170) for the 128GB version.

It’s likely that the updated model would simply be a POCO M2 with new branding, perhaps with a minor hardware upgrade or two. The phone would join POCO’s increasingly-crowded product lineup, which includes the Snapdragon 730G-powered POCO X2 from last February, the POCO F2 Pro with a Snapdragon 865, the cheaper POCO M2 Pro, the POCO X3 NFC, and of course, the original POCO M2.

Fairphone 2 from 2015 now receiving official update to Android 9 Pie

Fairphone has been producing Android phones since 2013, with a focus on repairability and lower environmental impact. The company dedicated itself to supporting its devices for a long as possible, and now the Fairphone 2 is receiving a major software update more than five years after it was first released.

“This year is a milestone for us, and you,” Fairphone said in a blog post, “as it marks 5 years of continuous support of the Fairphone 2. It is also one of the few Android smartphones sold in that year (2015), to still receive continued software support. It might not seem like a big deal, but trust us, it is. This is the only smartphone to receive an upgrade to Android 9 and we had to build the operating system without any support from chip-maker Qualcomm.”

The Fairphone 2 shipped with Android 5 Lollipop, but the company hit a snag a year later when Qualcomm refused to update its drivers for the Snapdragon 801 (the chipset used by the FP2, among many other phones) to work with Android 7.0 Nougat. Fairphone pushed on, and the FP2 eventually received a Nougat update in 2018 with no help from Qualcomm. A beta release for Android 9 Pie arrived in June of last year, and now the completed update is starting to roll out.

Fairphone says updating the FP2 to Pie was a challenge, especially given that the update had to pass “approximately 477,000 Google tests” to be certified for use with the Play Store — something that custom ROMs don’t have to worry about. The blog post mentions that Fairphone “effectively [uses] a DIY style to keep the FP2 going strong, enabling people to increase their phone’s longevity.”

Fairphone 2 Forums

Fairphone currently sells two phones, the FP3 and FP3+, both with a Snapdragon 632 chipset, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (plus microSD support), and a 3,060mAh battery. The plus model offers higher-resolution cameras and is built with 40% post-consumer recycled plastics.

Motorola’s Moto G50 sports a budget 5G chip and a low price

Motorola has announced the Moto G50, a 5G device that is set to launch in European markets for €249.99. The device has popped up more than once over the last few weeks, so today’s announcement isn’t much of a surprise. But we have all the juicy details for the 6.5-inch device.

The first thing you need to know about the Moto G50 is it comes equipped with a Snapdragon 480 5G chip. The 8nm chip, which was introduced at the beginning of this year, offers a pair of Cortex-A76 derived cores, which Qualcomm said is double the CPU performance of the Snapdragon 460.

Image: Motorola

The Moto G50 also features a 6.5-inch display with a resolution of 720p and a refresh rate of 90Hz. We would have liked to see the resolution bumped up to 1080p, but if you want a little more power, you could always check out the Moto G 5G. The display features a water drop design and it said to feature a device ratio of 85 percent.

On the inside the Moto G50 includes 4GB RAM, up to 128GB of storage (expandable to 1TB) and a 5,000mAh battery; the device comes with a 10W charger in the box (the device supports 15W charging). It’s by no means the most powerful device you’ll find, but at this price point it’s more or less par for the course. The device is outfitted with a USB-C port and supports Bluetooth 5.0.

Here’s where we start getting into the nitty-gritty. Motorola is launching the Moto G50 with Android 11 out of the box. Motorola said it’s committing to at least one major OS update, so we can expect the device to get Android 12 later this year or in early 2022.

Like it has done in the past, Motorola has created a set of tools called My UX that builds on the Android experience. The app allows users to apply custom settings to things like music, videos, games, and device themes. The device also debuts new gestures, including “swipe to split,” which allows users to split the screen to use two apps at once.

Moto G50 portrait camera sample provided by Motorola

Finally, the Moto G50 offers a triple camera setup headlined by a 48MP sensor. The module appears to be the same one found in the Moto G10, which means no 4K recording. The second sensor is a 5MP macro, and the third is a 2MP depth sensor. Meanwhile, the front of the device features a 13MP selfie camera, which supports HDR, Pro mode, and other features.

While the device lacks some high-end features, you’ll be happy to know it sports a 3.5mm headphone jack, water resistant design, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

According to Motorola, the G50 comes in single-SIM and dual-SIM variants depending on your region. The single-SIM model includes a slot for a NANO SIM and a microSD; the dual-SIM model features 2 NANO SIMs or 1 NANO SIM and a microSD. There are no shortage of options, and the price will vary depending on where you buy the device.

The Moto G50 comes in Steel Grey and Aqua Green, and will be available in the coming weeks. We’ll let you know as soon as a launch date is announced.

Hulu’s Android TV app finally allows 1080p streaming on NVIDIA SHIELD TV

Hulu has never seemed to pay much attention to Android TV devices. Hulu’s Android TV app finally received an overhaul in 2019, with the same updated interface that other platforms already had, but there was still one frustrating limitation: many devices were stuck playing content at 720p. No, really.

For years, Hulu subscribers have complained that the Android TV Hulu app seemingly refused to stream at the highest-available resolutions. The issue has mostly affected NVIDIA SHIELD TV devices, as some other Android TV products had no problem streaming at 1080p (or 4K, if the content supported it). My own Nebula Capsule II can stream Hulu content at 1080p, and there are reports that the Chromecast with Google TV also plays Hulu at 1080p without any issues.

Thankfully, a new update first spotted by some Redditors is rolling out to the Hulu for Android TV app and it appears to enable 1080p streaming on the SHIELD TV (via 9to5Google). It’s not clear if the change occurred with a server-side update or not, but APKMirror reports a new version of the app started rolling out around March 23.

It’s not all good news, though — the older 2017 SHIELD still seems to be capped at 720p streaming. Hulu’s support website says Live TV streaming is still only at 720p/60FPS on all Android TV devices. If you want to watch live programming in 1080p, you’ll need a Chromecast, Apple TV, Fire TV (Stick), game console, or a compatible Samsung smart TV.

The Hulu app for Android TV still sits at a 1.7-star rating on the Google Play Store, with the vast majority of reviews having only one star. Many of the reviews were from the multi-year gap in updates, but there are many recent issues too, including slow performance with Live TV and streams not starting properly. Even with the recent fixes, it’s clear Hulu still has a long way to go before its Android TV app is comparable to Hulu on other platforms.
