Redmi Note 8, Xiaomi Mi Note 10, and Mi 10T Lite get Android 11-based MIUI 12 updates in some regions

Xiaomi kicked off its Android 11 update rollout with the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and the Redmi K30 Pro in September last year. The company has since rolled out MIUI 12-flavored Android 11 for a couple of devices, including the Mi 10 Lite, Mi Note 10 Lite, Redmi Note 9 Pro/Redmi Note 9S, and more. Continuing the update flow, the Chinese OEM is now rolling out Android 11 via MIUI 12’s stable channel for the Mi 10T Lite, Mi Note 10, and the Redmi Note 8 in select regions.

Out of the aforementioned devices, the Mi 10T Lite has three unique regions-specific variants. The device is sold as the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G in China and the Mi 10i in India, albeit the Android 11 update is available only for the global variant at this moment. On the contrary, the Chinese variant of the Mi Note 10 (AKA the Mi CC9 Pro) is no stranger to Android 11, but its international counterpart has so far lagged behind. The wait is finally over, as the update is now live for the European model.

The Redmi Note 8, on the other hand, has received the Android 11 update in China. For reference, the mid-ranger debuted with Android 9 Pie with MIUI 10 on top and subsequently received Android 10, which means this is the second major Android OS update for the phone. As such, there’s no guarantee it will get further major software updates.

In case you wish to try out MIUI 12 based on Android 11 on one of these devices, you can download the appropriate update package from the index below and install it on your device. However, before you go ahead and start downloading, do note that you may need to use a custom recovery like TWRP in order to flash the build. Xiaomi still treats these updates as “stable beta”, which is why an authorized Mi Account might be required to sideload. Once the company considers them to be stable enough, they are going to flip a server-side switch that will eventually remove the need for such authorization before flashing.

Samsung’s smart AR glasses concept will let you have your own Iron Man moment

Although AR glasses aren’t as big today as Google may have hoped back in 2013, a few companies are still working on bringing their own Google Glass-alternatives to the market. For instance, OPPO showcased its AR smart glasses at its Inno Day event late last year, and Lenovo launched the ThinkReality A3 AR glasses for enterprise customers earlier this year. Similarly, rumors suggest that Samsung and Apple are also working on bringing AR smart glasses to the market, but we’ve not learned much about these products so far. However, leaked concept videos about Samsung’s AR glasses have now surfaced online, giving us a brief glimpse of what Samsung plans to achieve with the product.

The leaked videos in question come from Twitter user WalkingCat (A_h0x0d_), and they showcase two products — Samsung AR Glasses and Samsung Glasses Lite. The first video is all about the Samsung Glasses Lite, and it highlights all of the features on offer. As you can see in the attached video, the Samsung Glasses Lite will be capable of projecting a large screen in front of a user’s eyes, allowing them to enjoy games or watch videos.

Users will also be able to use this screen as a DeX Display, to make video calls, and even to view a direct video feed from a connected drone. Users will be able to control the glasses using a Samsung smartwatch, and the glasses will also offer a Sunglass mode, which will tint the glass at the touch of a button to improve outdoor visibility.

The second video highlights the Samsung AR Glasses, which seem to be a more premium version of the Glasses Lite. These advanced glasses will let users see digital 3D objects in the real world, letting them create AR workspaces, make holographic calls, and generate holographic simulations like Iron Man. Looks pretty cool, right? Don’t get your hopes up, though, as these glasses are just as real as Iron Man right now and until Samsung releases any official information, they’re going to remain that way.

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12.5 – is finally here. The first incremental update over MIUI 12 has been unveiled at the Mi 11 launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 12, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12.5 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and a handful of new features. We have already extracted the new live wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12.5 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi has yet to launch MIUI 12.5 globally. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12.5 builds listed below are based on either Android 10 or Android 11, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 12 stable releases, you can find those here.

You can download the latest beta of MIUI 12.5 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

Chrome for iOS to bring Face and Touch ID security for Incognito tabs

The Incognito mode on Chrome is a great option if you want to visit sensitive websites and at the same time, avoid leaving a trace behind in the browser’s history. However, if you forget to close these tabs, chances are that someone can simply pick up your unlocked phone and get access to these Incognito tabs. To avoid that, Google’s Chrome team is working on a new privacy feature for iOS users. In a new beta update, Chrome now lets you lock Incognito tabs with your iPhone’s Face ID or Touch ID authentication.

As per the Google Chrome Beta for iOS 89 release notes, “You can add more security to your Incognito tabs with Touch ID or Face ID. When you return to the app, your Incognito tabs will be blurred until you confirm it’s you.” Once a user enables Face ID or Touch ID-based locking, Chrome for iOS will no longer let you see any of the opened Incognito tabs without first unlocking them. Once the Incognito mode is unlocked, you will no longer have to authenticate with Face or Touch ID until the browser is closed and opened again.

How to enable authentication for Incognito tab privacy on Chrome for iOS

The new feature is only available on the latest beta version of Chrome for iOS. This means that you need to first install the Beta that will replace the existing version of Chrome on your device.

  • To get Chrome Beta, install Apple’s TestFlight iOS app on your iOS device.
  • Visit TestFlight invitation URL for Chrome Beta
  • Agree to the license agreement and install the Beta.
    • In case you get a notification suggesting that the Beta is full, you might have to wait until a new invite is available from Google’s Chrome Beta site.
  • After installing the Beta for iOS 89 app, enter chrome://flags in the address bar and search for ‘Device Authentication for Incognito’  and enable the flag.

chrome beta 89 flags incognito security

  • Close and reopen the app
  • Head over to Settings > Privacy and enable ‘Lock Incognito Tabs when you close Chrome’
  • If you want to disable this feature, go back into chrome://flags and disable the setting.

As of now, there is no such security feature available for Android users. But considering that the feature is being tested in beta, we should soon see it arriving for the Android version of the Chrome browser.

Chromium developers are also said to be experimenting with different widths of tabs on the desktop version of Chrome when the tab scrolling feature (also in testing) is turned on. This feature makes it so your tab bar doesn’t look so squished together when you have multiple tabs open at once. Firefox and Safari have similar features, so it’s nice to see Google following suit on its browser.

Lawnchair launcher is making a comeback this year

Lawnchair launcher is making a comeback after lying dormant for well over a year. The launcher last received a significant update back in November of 2019, which added several key features to the app. However, its lead developer has since moved on to other projects, and it’s now being taken over by a new team.

According to recent posts on the launcher’s official Telegram channel, a new team of at least seven developers is now working on the project and has released updates to two existing versions of the app. Additionally, the posts reveal that the team is working on merging recent code changes from AOSP Launcher3 for the next major release. Check the section below for a list of changes included in Lawnchair 9.1 Alpha 2 and 10.0 Alpha 8.

Lawnchair updates

As we work towards a release with the latest Launcher3 at its core, we’re thrilled to share with you updates to the two existing major versions of Lawnchair.

But first, we’re introducing a new versioning scheme. The major version number reflects the Android release whose home app version a build is based on. For example, the major version of Lawnchair based on Launcher3 from Android 10 is called Lawnchair 10. And we call our next major release Lawnchair 11. We hope you enjoy today’s builds!

Lawnchair 9.1 Alpha 2 addresses an issue with At a Glance where adding calendar events as a data source would show the weather instead.

Lawnchair 10.0 Alpha 8:
• Addresses an issue with At a Glance where adding calendar events as a data source would show the weather instead.
• Resolves crashes on Android 11.
• Introduces the Android 11 app closing animation on devices with a recent version of Launcher3 installed.

As you know, our founder – Tillie Kottmann – will no longer be leading Lawnchair. This is a good opportunity to express our gratitude.

You can follow the links below to download the latest Lawnchair launcher releases on your device. As of now, the app’s Play Store listing hasn’t been updated with the new releases.

Huawei may halve its smartphone production this year

Huawei has been in a tight spot ever since it was placed on the US Commerce Department’s Entity List in 2019. Although the company has made several efforts to survive against all odds, things have come to the point that it has had to sell some of its assets to stay afloat. For instance, the company sold its budget-friendly sub-brand Honor to a consortium of agents and dealers late last year, and it’s reportedly in early-stage talks to sell its Mate and P series as brands. On top of that, a recent report suggests that the company may also halve its smartphone production this year to keep costs low.

According to Nikkie Asia, Huawei has notified its suppliers that its smartphone component orders will be cut by more than 60% this yearThe report cites sources from multiple suppliers, who have revealed that the company only plans to order components for 70 million to 80 million smartphones in 2021. That’s over a 60% decline from the 189 million Huawei smartphones shipped last year. A few suppliers indicate that the figure could potentially fall to nearly 50 million units.

The report further reveals that Huawei’s orders are limited to components for 4G smartphones, as it lacks the US government’s permission to import components for 5G devices. While Huawei hasn’t released an official statement on the matter, it’s quite clear that the US restrictions are taking a toll on its global smartphone business. Last year, the company lost its second spot on the list of top smartphone manufacturers to Samsung, and it may slip down even further this year. Unless the US government eases sanctions on the company this year, which seems unlikely at the moment, Huawei may be forced to exit the smartphone business altogether in the near future. We’ll update this post as soon as we learn of any further developments.

Xiaomi’s new audio gear in India includes an ANC neckband and 16W Bluetooth speaker

Xiaomi on Monday expanded its audio portfolio with two new additions: the Mi Neckaband Pro and Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker. The Mi Neckband Pro is a follow-up to the Mi Neckband earphones, which were launched in 2019. While the Mi Neckband aimed at delivering an affordable wireless audio experience with modest features, Xiaomi is positioning the Pro variant as a premium offering. To that end, the Mi Neckband Pro does bring substantial improvements to the table, ranging from better battery life and updated design to Active Noise Cancellation capabilities and improved audio performance.

The Mi Neckband Pro earphones feature a classic rubber collar design with wires shooting through the plastic modules and running to the earcups. All controls are placed on the right side, while the left module has a discreet Mi logo printed on the outer side. Xiaomi says the earphones have an anti-cerumen design and anti-blockage speaker net, both of which help prevent ear-wax and small dust particles from clogging the speakers. A 10mm driver unit is fitted inside each speaker unit and claims to deliver bass-driven audio. The Mi Neckband Pro works on Bluetooth 5.0 protocol with support for AAC and SBC codecs.

Mi Neckband Pro

The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is the main highlight of the Mi Neckband Pro, with the earphones claiming to provide up to 25db reduction in surrounding noises. Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC) is also on board and is said to bring down to 90% environmental noises when taking voice calls. The battery life is rated for up to 20 hours on a single charge, and you also get an IPX5 rating for sweat and splash resistance.

Available in Black and Blue variants, the Mi Neckband Pro Bluetooth earphones are priced at ₹1,799 (~$25) and will go on sale from Mi.com and Amazon India starting today at 1 PM IST.

Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker

The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker is the latest entry in Xiaomi’s wireless speaker range. It’s already available in some markets, but it’s only now making its way to India. The Mi Portable Bluetooth speaker features two 8W drivers to deliver a powerful wireless audio experience on the go. It offers dual EQ modes, normal and bass, which can be toggled via a button. You can also set up two Mi speakers to create a stereo sound.

There’s a 2,600mAh battery inside that charges via a USB Type-C port. On a single charge, the Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker can last up to 13 hours. It also has a built-in microphone for taking voice calls and summoning your voice assistant. The speaker works on Bluetooth 5.0 and is IPX7 waterproof.

The Mi Portable Bluetooth Speaker comes in Blue and Black colors and will be available from Mi.com starting today at ₹2,499 (~$35).
