OPPO Reno 5 4G Global version detailed in a hands-on video

Hot on the heels of the OPPO Reno 5 series launch in China earlier this month, OPPO is now gearing up to launch the Reno 5 4G for global markets. The phone was spotted on multiple certification websites including NBTC, EEC, and TKDN a few weeks ago, hinting at the imminent launch, and now a hand-on video released by an Indonesian YouTuber has given us our first look at this upcoming smartphone.

An Indonesian tech YouTube channel called Nextren Grid has posted a hands-on video of the OPPO Reno 5 4G (Global) variant which shows off the overall design and display of the smartphone. As you can see in the video, the design of the OPPO Reno 5 is very identical to the Reno 4 but the YouTuber mentions OPPO has made several subtle changes to the material which makes for a very different hand feel — in particular, he mentions the back of the Reno 5 4G feels more textured and rougher than the Reno 4. The phone will be available in at least two colors: Starry Black and Fantasy White.

Although the video didn’t get into other nitty-gritty of the hardware, a separate leak from well-known leaker Sudhanshu Ambhore has revealed some key specifications of the Reno 5 4G. As per Sudhanshu, the Reno 5 4G will feature a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz screen refresh rate. It will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset and offer 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage. In the camera department, the Reno 5 4G will have four rear cameras comprised of a 64MP primary, 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP depth, and 2MP macro sensors. Finally, the phone will pack a 4,310mAh battery with 50W SuperVOOC fast charging support, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and will run Android 11 out-of-the-box with ColorOS v11.1 on top.

Overall, the Reno 5 4G doesn’t seem to be a whole lot different than the Reno 4 Pro Global, which launched in July, with the only difference between the two being the primary camera, battery, and charging speed.

OPPO hasn’t yet shared any information on when it plans to launch the Reno 5 4G in global markets. However, seeing that the phone has already reached into the hands of some YouTubers, it shouldn’t be long before we hear an official announcement from OPPO.

Xiaomi’s Mi Home app for smart home management gets a UI redesign in v6.0

Apart from a vast portfolio of smartphones and smart TVs, Xiaomi sells a variety of smart home products in various markets around the globe. To manage its smart home products, the company has the Mi Home app which works fairly well, integrates with Android 11’s power menu, and is now getting a brand new update. The Mi Home app v6.0 has made its way to the Google Play Store that introduces a UI redesign. Apart from the visual changes, the new version of the app also brings some new functionality.

The Mi Home app lets you connect all of Xiaomi’s smart home devices like their range of air purifiers, smart lighting, Wi-Fi routers, home security cameras, and many more. Compared to the previous version of the app, the new update brings a cleaner UI with larger text and toggles, making everything more accessible. The app also shakes off the sea-green color scheme limiting it only for the icons and power-button of each device that you have added to the app.

 

Other than that, most of the functionality seems to be the same, but there are some new changes that have been added to Mi Home v6.0:

• You can now access “Messaging” from the “Mi Home” tab by tapping the bell icon rather than going to Profile and tapping the Messaging section.
• Managing/changing your rooms in the “Mi Home” tab now opens up in a pop-up dialog rather than a full-screen dialog.
• The “Logs” section has been moved from a separate section in the “Automation” tab to a button up top.

The Xiaomi Home app is necessary to set up the vast portfolio of the company’s connected devices. Considering their pricing and sheer diversity of products, smart products from Xiaomi are often a no-brainer decision for people looking to start building towards a smart home. That places the Xiaomi Home app in the enviable position that grants it wide popularity at the get go. The app also appears to be transitioning into a newer name (Mi Home -> Xiaomi Home) with a slightly different icon background, if the Play Store listing is any clue.

Vivo V20 2021 launches in India, replaces two-month-old Vivo V20 (2020)

Vivo has silently refreshed its Vivo V series in India with the launch of the Vivo V20 2021, a follow up to the Vivo V20 (2020) that launched just two months ago. As expected there aren’t many major hardware upgrades to talk about here, with the only major change being the new Snapdragon 730G chipset. But beyond that, the new phone is identical to the last model in every respect.

Pricing & Availability

The Vivo V20 2021 is already up for sale on Amazon India at ₹24,990 ($339), as spotted by GSMArena. It only comes in an 8GB/128GB variant and you can pick it up in either Sunset Melody or Midnight Jazz color. As for what will happen to the Vivo V20 (2020), it looks like Vivo will discontinue the older model in favor of the new one, as per a report from Moneycontrol.

In terms of specifications, the Vivo V20 2021 has a 6.44-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 2400 x 1080. On the back, you’ll find a rectangular camera module housing a triple camera setup consisting of a 64MP f/1.89 primary sensor, 8MP f/2.2 wide-angle camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. On the front, there’s a 44MP selfie shooter which also supports 4K shooting. On the inside, the Vivo V20 2021 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset, a step up from the Snapdragon 720G on the last model, paired with Adreno 618 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB flash storage.

There’s a 4,000 mAh battery with 33W FlashCharge support. On the software front, the phone runs Android 11 with Vivo’s Funtouch OS 11 on top. Other highlights of the package include an in-display fingerprint scanner, Bluetooth 5.1, a 3.5mm audio jack, dual SIM support, and microSD card expansion support.

Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Pro leak again, revealing price, battery life, and more

Over the past few weeks, we’ve learned a lot about the Galaxy Buds Pro. We know the design will be more rounded, and that the earbuds will include a spatial audio feature similar to the AirPods Pro. Now, just a few weeks ahead of their rumored debut, even more details are being revealed.

Leaked images shared by WalkingCat on Twitter purports to show some of the Galaxy Buds Pro’s key details. The biggest one is the price: Apparently the earbuds will retail for $199 when they launch. But that’s not all.

The slide reveals the Galaxy Buds Pro will also include 2-way speaker like the Galaxy Buds Plus, along with more powerful active noise cancellation. Samsung is calling the feature intelligent noise cancelling, and will provide users with greater control over the experience. The earbuds will reportedly feature a conversation mode, ambient sound, and ANC with level control.

As noted before, the Galaxy Buds Pro will also feature spatial audio, plus IPX7 water resistance. One of the slides also mentions a new Galaxy Buds widget for Samsung devices, although it isn’t clear what the widget will offer.

Finally, it looks like the Galaxy Buds Pro will feature battery life that’s similar to the Galaxy Buds Plus and Galaxy Buds Live. The earbuds will get 8 hours of play time and 4.5 hours of talk time; playtime with the case will offer 28 hours, while the case will offer 15 hours of talk time. That’s not quite as good as the 11 hours of talk time the Galaxy Buds Plus offers, but it matches the Galaxy Buds Live.

At $199, the Galaxy Buds Pro sound like a pretty good value. They offer a high-end design, decent battery life, and a new spatial audio feature for more immersive sound. Samsung is expected to hold an Unpacked event on January 14, so it won’t be much longer until we know more about the wireless earbuds.

Zoom’s latest update adds a call end chime when users disconnect abruptly

Zoom has introduced a new update for the platform on Android, which includes a number of new features like enhanced cloud contact integration and enhanced nonverbal feedback. The platform has also introduced plenty of new features and fixes for users on desktop.

One of the more interesting new additions for Zoom is a call end chime.

“Users will hear a chime and see a notification when a call ends abruptly, typically from poor network connection or the other caller ending the call,” Zoom said in its release notes.

Here’s the full changelog for Zoom on Android version 5.4.7:

  • Enhanced cloud contact integration for chat/call features
    Contacts imported through the contact integration can now be easily added as a Zoom contact. Once approved as a Zoom contact, you will have the ability to call or meet with them and see their Zoom status.

    Nonverbal feedback options are moved to the Reactions button, and all reactions will be shown in the corner of the participants’ video. The host will see each participant’s reactions in the participant list, as well as the aggregate numbers of each reaction at the bottom of the list.

Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook 2 could cost $699 and feature a QLED display

A press render for the Galaxy Chromebook 2 leaked earlier this week, and now it looks like specs for the device have been revealed.

The latest leak comes courtesy of WalkingCat on Twitter, who shared an image of what appears to be an internal slide for the Galaxy Chromebook 2. One of the things that stands out is what Samsung is promising for battery life.

According to the slide, Samsung is targeting 12-plus hours of battery life, which is a major step up from the original Galaxy Chromebook’s eight hours. In practice, the original laptop got roughly four hours of battery life, so any improvement would be welcome.

The leaked slide also reveals the Galaxy Chromebook 2 will feature a 13.3-inch QLED display — a first in the Chromebook market — plus an ultra slim profile that weighs in at 2.75 pounds. The device will also allegedly feature a 10th-gen Core i3 and improved sound (apparently 178% louder than the initial model).

Samsung has already made the switch to QLED display in its laptops, so the move wouldn’t be unprecedented. The company’s original Galaxy Chromebook came equipped with a 4K AMOLED display, which likely had an adverse effect on battery life.

With all of these changes, the base model of the Galaxy Chromebook 2 may retail for $699. That’s much more affordable than the Galaxy Chromebook, which launched for $999 and featured a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor, 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and a 13.3-inch 4K display.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2 will allegedly be available in February 2021 at Best Buy and through Samsung’s website. Samsung is expected to hold an Unpacked event on January 14, where we may learn about the Galaxy S21 series and Galaxy Buds Pro. That may also be a good time to reveal details for the unannounced Chromebook, which means an official announcement is just around the corner.
