Zoom may expand beyond videoconferencing with a Calendar and Email service

Zoom has become the dominant force in the videoconferencing space, and with more people working from home, the company apparently has ambitions to move in on other territory.

The Information reports Zoom is exploring ways to expand beyond videoconferencing with an email and calendar service. If true, the company could potentially pose greater competition to companies like Google and Microsoft, both of which offer a suite of enterprise software.

Zoom’s email service will allegedly be web-based and may be ready to test as early as next year. The company’s calendar service, meanwhile, is reportedly much farther off, with no timetable attached to the project. Both services will likely have deep integration with Zoom’s videoconferencing app, which put the company on the map this year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic

Offering a full suite of productivity software could make Zoom increasingly competitive in a market dominated by Google and Microsoft. It’s a smart move on Zoom’s part, too. With COVID-19 vaccines slowly being distributed, companies may order employees to return to the office in 2021, which could see usage of Zoom’s videoconferencing app decline.

Zoom has enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2020 as people have been forced to work from home. Once just another videoconferencing app, it’s now one of the most used services in the world, allowing people to video chat with friends, family, and colleagues. Over the last several months, the service has only gotten better, rolling out end-to-end encryption and support for devices like the Google Nest Hub Max.

Email and calendar services are a dime a dozen, but Zoom already has a massive presence in the market. If the company can introduce new services that are comparable to what’s offered by Google and Microsoft, then 2021 could be very interesting. Testing for Zoom’s email service is rumored begin next year, so hopefully we’ll learn official details soon.

OnePlus 9 “Lite” rumored to feature similar hardware to the OnePlus 8T

OnePlus’ smartphone lineup this year has covered just about every price point you can imagine, from high-end flagships to devices that are just a few hundred dollars. Based on a new report, we could see the company continue that trend.

According to Android Central, OnePlus will launch three OnePlus 9 models early next year. Apparently, the company is planning to introduce the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro, and a OnePlus Lite, the latter of which will feature similar hardware to the OnePlus 8T.

The device will reportedly come equipped with a Snapdragon 865 chip and 90 or 120Hz AMOLED panel. Android Central also claims the OnePlus 9 Lite will support 65W fast charging. The device is also expected to share the same camera optics found in the OnePlus 8T.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 9 Lite may feature a plastic back “and more mainstream design to differentiate itself from the costlier OnePlus 8T,” Android Central said. Outside of that, the report doesn’t have any other concrete details about hardware, but does speculate the device may launch for $600.

The Snapdragon 865 processor rumored for the OnePlus 9 Lite is a year old at this point, but it still offers good performance. Using the older chipset will allow OnePlus to keep the device’s cost down while still offering a flagship experience. The mid-range segment has become more competitive than ever with devices like the Galaxy S20 FE, Pixel 5, and even Apple’s recent iPhone 12, so the OnePlus 9 Lite will have to bring its A game.

Recently, there was a report claiming OnePlus would release a device called OnePlus 9E, and it’s possible the OnePlus 9 Lite is that device. It’s unclear if the name has been changed or if Android Central simply got its facts wrong, according to Max Jambor on Twitter.

In addition to the OnePlus 9 Lite, we’re also expecting to see the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, the latter of which could debut at around $1,000. These devices will offer the latest advancements in technology, but if we’re being honest, we’re more excited to see how OnePlus can makes “lite” phone stand out from the crowd.

The OnePlus 9 series is expected to launch sometime in Q1 2021, so it won’t be much longer before we have official details.

Amazon Echo Show can now stream movies and shows from Netflix

Amazon has announced the availability of Netflix on the Echo Show. According to the company’s announcement, users can now watch their favorite movies and TV shows from the streaming service and expect some new video features on the device as well. This is similar to what Amazon offered last year where it allowed users to stream content from Prime Video right on to their Alexa equipped smart display.

Currently, owners of the Echo Show have access to video services like Prime Video, Hulu, NBC, and more. The addition of Netflix should be available on the first and second-generation Echo Show as well as the Echo Show 5, and Echo Show 8. Users will now be able to search, browse, pause, resume, and stream movies or TV shows available on Netflix. Since the Echo Show comes with Alexa built-in, users will be able to give voice commands for a hands-free experience. For instance, you can call out and say “Alexa, show me horror movies on Netflix” or “Alexa, find comedy movies on Netflix.”

Additionally, Amazon has also introduced new video features to enhance the user experience. There will be a new video home page that would provide customized recommendations for what to watch next. By saying “Alexa, open video home” you will get to see all your recommended videos including TV shows and movies. The new video detail pages will also offer information on the selected series or movie at a glance.

Amazon is a bit late to the party as Google enabled support for Netflix on its range of smart displays back in July. Notably, Google does offer a wider range of video streaming apps including Netflix, NBC Peacock, HBO Max, Disney+, CBS All Access, Sling TV, Hulu, SHOWTIME, and more. Nevertheless, it is great to finally have the feature at hand, and hopefully, we can expect more services to be added to the list soon. Amazon also recently added the ability to initiate one-command group calls.

Samsung opens an Android 11 beta with One UI 3.0 for the Galaxy M31

Back in October, Samsung kicked off the One UI 3.0 beta program for its flagship Galaxy S20 series. The update brought all the new features introduced in Android 11 to the devices, along with some minor improvements to Samsung’s own Android skin. Shortly thereafter, the program was extended to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Z Flip 5G, S10, and Note 10 series. And now, after the update started rolling out to a number of devices via stable channel, the Galaxy M31 has made it to the beta-list, making it the first mid-range Samsung smartphone to get a taste of Android 11.

According to a recent post on Samsung’s Community forums, the One UI 3.0 beta program is now publicly available for the Galaxy M31 (model number SM-M315F) in India. Matter of fact, those who registered for the beta have already started receiving the beta version of Samsung’s latest software update on their devices. The first One UI 3.0 beta build for the Galaxy M31 is carrying version number M315FXXU2ZTLH, and it comes with the Android security patches for December 2020.

In case you have a Galaxy M31 and want to give One UI 3.0 beta a try, you can register for the beta program by heading over to the Samsung Members app and tapping on the One UI beta banner. On the following screen, tap on the enroll button and wait a few minutes for the app to process your enrollment. After that, head over to the software update section in your device settings and tap on check for updates to download the open beta release.

FCC docs confirm Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra will support S Pen

The hype around Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S21 series is real. Thanks to a steady stream of leaks over the past few months, we know pretty much everything there’s to know about the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra, including their specifications and probable pricing. We have also been hearing rumors that Samsung might do away with the Galaxy Note series altogether, giving way for the Galaxy S and the new Galaxy Fold series to lead the charge.

To that end, reports have also been pointing at Samsung bringing one of the most defining aspects of the Galaxy Note series to the Galaxy 20 Ultra: S Pen support. This was later backed up by Dr. TM Roh, Samsung’s Head of Mobile Communications, when he hinted that the company would “add some of its most well-loved Galaxy features ” to other Galaxy phones. Now, an FCC filing (via Android Authority) has revealed that the Galaxy 21 Ultra (model number SMG998B) will indeed support S Pen. As per the listing, the phone will also offer the Hover feature similar to the Galaxy Note series, allowing users to display a pointer or preview text/images by simply holding the S pen over the screen.

The S Pen likely won’t be part of the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s in-box contents and will be sold separately, as per the previous reports. There also won’t be a cavity within the device to hold the S Pen but Samsung will offer some special cases which will let you store the stylus.

Apart from S Pen support, the FCC filing has confirmed the Galaxy S21 Ultra will boast Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) functionality, NFC, reverse wireless charging, and Wi-Fi 6E. As a quick recap, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be the most feature-packed smartphone in the Galaxy S21 series, packing a 6.8-inch QHD+ AMOLED curved display, quad cameras, Exynos 2100 or Snapdragon 888 chipset, up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, a 5,000mAh battery, and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.
