MIUI 12’s latest Geometry and Snow Mountain live wallpapers are now available for download

Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 packs several stunning live wallpapers, and the company keeps adding new options with every other update. Over the last few months, we’ve shared a couple of ports of these wallpapers that let you use them on any non-Xiaomi device. The latest MIUI 12 nightly brings two more additions and, as you’ve probably come to expect by now, XDA Recognized Contributor linuxct has managed to port the latest live wallpapers for use on any Android device.

The latest MIUI 12 live wallpaper port includes two new wallpapers: Geometry and Snow Mountain. As you can see in the attached tweets, the Snow Mountain wallpaper offers a unique unlock animation that zooms out of the peak when you unlock your device. The sky and scenery in the wallpaper change color based on the time of day, and it also features some subtle animations that are triggered when you swipe between pages on your homescreen.

On the other hand, the Geometry wallpaper consists of a set of moving geometric shapes in various colors and opacity. The wallpaper has two versions, a bright one with a light blue background and a dark one with a black background. In both versions, the geometric shapes move around as you swipe through pages on your homescreen. However, unlike the Snow Mountain wallpaper, it doesn’t change colors based on the time of day.

As with all previous live wallpaper ports from linuxct, the latest additions make use of the actual OpenGL code from the original wallpaper for the animations. Therefore, they require a capable device to perform as fluidly as shown above. It’s also worth noting that the port won’t work on certain SoCs, like some Exynos, Kirin, and MediaTek chipsets, due to a different OpenGL ES implementation.

Here are the countries using Google and Apple’s COVID-19 Contact Tracing API

SARS-CoV-2, also known colloquially as just the coronavirus, has wreaked havoc across the world. Many countries shut down large parts of the economy in order to contain the spread of the virus. As countries reopen their economies, many health experts fear a “second wave”, ie. resurgence, of COVID-19. To prevent a second wave, public health experts are advocating that nations adopt contact tracing, ie. tracing all the people who have recently come into contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19 and then undertaking steps to isolate those individuals. Contact tracing is difficult to implement correctly without violating an individual’s privacy. The threat to personal privacy was severe enough for Google and Apple to collaborate on an API that developers of public health agencies can use to implement app-based contact tracing solutions. This contact tracing API, which Google and Apple call the Exposure Notification API, is designed to respect user privacy and security.

Once a user downloads an app that uses the Exposure Notification API and opts in to contact tracing, their device starts generating “proximity identifiers” that are changed every 15 minutes (on average). Via Bluetooth Low Energy, these “proximity identifiers” are periodically shared with nearby devices whose users have also opted into contact tracing. The proximity identifier is then processed on-device and does not reveal information about a user’s location or other personally identifiable information. Once a user confirms a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, they can share their diagnosis with the app they installed, which will then inform other users who have come into close contact with them in the last 14 days. For more information on how the Exposure Notification API works, we recommend reading our initial coverage.

Google first rolled out the Exposure Notification API for Android devices on May 20, 2020, as part of an update to Google Play Services, but its use is restricted to apps that have been developed by official public health agencies (for obvious reasons). However, neither Google nor Apple has made details public about the list of apps that have been whitelisted for using this API, so unless you’re constantly keeping up with the news, it’s hard to know which countries have adopted the API. We’ve previously covered some of the countries that have adopted the Exposure Notification API when we talked about the various open-source contact tracing projects that are out there. In this article, we have compiled a list of official contact tracing apps from designated health agencies from various countries that are using Google and Apple’s Exposure Notification API. Our list contains COVID-19 contact tracing apps that have been released or are currently in development.

We discovered Google’s hidden whitelist of application package names for the API. Subsequently, these package names were traced back to apps, their listing, and the countries they belong to. The information is compiled below in a table for easy reference. We have also added Google Play Store and Apple App Store links, if the app has been publicly released, as well as the source code and the official website link, wherever available. We will update the following tables as more countries/regions adopt the API.

Xiaomi’s Mi 11 launches December 28th as the first phone with the Snapdragon 888

A day before Qualcomm unveiled its latest flagship chipset, the company confirmed the names of 14 OEMs who will build devices equipped with the new SoC. Soon after the official announcement, some of these OEMs confirmed plans to launch new smartphones with the Snapdragon 888 onboard. These included Xiaomi, OPPO, and Realme. At the time, Xiaomi had revealed that its upcoming Mi 11 would be “one of the first devices to run on the Snapdragon 888 mobile platform!” But the company hadn’t shared any specific launch date for the same.

While we had assumed that Xiaomi would launch the Mi 11 sometime early next year, the company’s co-founder Mr. Lei Jun has now confirmed that the flagship device will be announced later this month. In a recent post on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Mr. Jun announced that the Xiaomi Mi 11 will be released on December 28th at 7:30 PM. While the post reveals no specific information about the Mi 11, it suggests that the device will pack many surprises.

Recent leaks suggest that Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship, the Mi 11 Pro, could bring major display enhancements, including a high-resolution QHD+ panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and new display features like MEMC, SDR-to-HDR upmapping, and AI upscaling. While none of these features are new to the Android smartphone world, it would be great to see such premium display tech reach more people with Xiaomi’s upcoming flagships.

Since Xiaomi has already jumped the gun and announced the launch of its Snapdragon 888-powered flagship, we expect other OEMs to follow suit in the coming days. OPPO and Realme are likely to make the announcement sometime soon, as the companies have already revealed some details about their upcoming flagships, namely the OPPO Find X3 series and the Realme “Race”. While other manufacturers are yet to make a formal announcement, recent leaks suggest that Samsung will be unveiling its Snapdragon 888-powered Galaxy S21 series on January 14th.

[Update: Crisis Averted] Many websites could potentially break on older Android phones in 2021

Update 1 (12/22/2020 @ 01:01 AM ET): Let’s Encrypt has found a way for older Android phones to continue visiting sites that use their certificates next year. The original article, as published on November 9, 2020, is preserved below.

Although Project Treble has played a major role in improving the distribution of the latest versions of Android over the last few years, fragmentation remains one of the biggest shortcomings of the Android ecosystem. A huge chunk of Android devices currently in use run out-of-date versions of the operating system, and that can lead to a variety of issues. For instance, many websites could potentially break on older Android devices next year due to an expiring root certificate.

When Let’s Encrypt, a non-profit certificate authority that provides free certificates for TLS encryption, first launched several years ago, the organization cross-signed signatures with IdenTrust’s DST Root X3 certificate, a root certificate that has been in use for years and is trusted by the majority of major software platforms, including Windows, iOS, Android, macOS, and many Linux distributions. To date, millions of web domains are protected with Let’s Encrypt certificates, but as pointed out in a recent blog post from Let’s Encrypt, the DST Root X3 root certificate will expire on September 1, 2021.

Let’s Encrypt’s partnership with IdenTrust was necessary for the former’s certificates to quickly be trusted by existing devices, but at the same time, the organization issued its own root certificate (ISRG Root X1) and worked to have it be trusted by most major operating systems. However, some software that hasn’t been updated since 2016 won’t trust the new root certificate, which includes Android devices running versions less than 7.1.1. Therefore, when the DST Root X3 root certificate expires next year, many older Android devices will no longer trust certificates issued by Let’s Encrypt and will thus get certificate errors when visiting websites whose TLS encryption is signed with a Let’s Encrypt certificate.

According to the latest Android distribution statistics derived from Android Studio (shown below), 33.8% of Android devices in circulation as of April 2020 run Android versions older than 7.1 Nougat. This represents around 1-5% of traffic to websites that have a Let’s Encrypt certificate. While the percentage of devices running older Android OS versions will undoubtedly decrease by the time DST Root X3 expires next year, the drop in percentage may not be significant based on current trends.

Android version distribution September 2020

To minimize the impact of this change for end-users, Let’s Encrypt has offered two solutions. The first solution, which is directed at website owners, will introduce a change to the Let’s Encrypt API in January next year so that “ACME clients will, by default, serve a certificate chain that leads to ISRG Root X1. However, it will also be possible to serve an alternate certificate chain for the same certificate that leads to DST Root X3 and offers broader compatibility.”

For end-users who have a device running an older version of Android, Let’s Encrypt suggests installing Firefox to circumvent this issue. Unlike stock browser apps, which rely on the operating system for the list of trusted root certificates, Firefox ships with its own trusted root certificates list. The latest version of Firefox for Android includes an up-to-date list of trusted certificate authorities, and it will allow users with an outdated version of Android to open websites that have a Let’s Encrypt certificate.

Update 1: Older Android Device Compatibility Extended for Let’s Encrypt Certificates

As announced today in a blog post, older Android devices running Android versions prior to 7.1.1 will be able to visit sites that use Let’s Encrypt certificates after their original cross-sign partnership with IdenTrust expires next year. It turns out that Android doesn’t “enforce the expiration dates of certificates used as trust anchors.” Because of this, IdenTrust has issued a 3-year cross-sign agreement for Let’s Encrypt’s ISRG Root X1 certificate from their DST Root CA X3, even though the latter will expire next year.  As such, there will be no impact on users with older Android phones, avoiding the potential breakage of many websites on those devices.

Select Dyson air purifiers and robot vacuums get Google Assistant support

Dyson products are probably sitting under a lot of trees right now as gifts for the holidays. To gear up for the season of giving, Dyson has announced Google Assistant is now compatible with a small selection of its appliances.

Once you link Google Assistant with your Dyson account, you’ll be able to control your smart Dyson purifier, humidifier, and robot vacuum with just your voice. You can also create routines that will automate how your Dyson appliances work with other devices in your home. So, you can say good evening, and have your lights and your humidifier turn on.

You can control your Dyson products using the Google Home app or an Assistant-powered Smart Display, including the Nest Hub. You’ll be able to say things like “Hey Google, turn on my purifier,” or “Hey Google, set the fan speed to five.”

Here are the Dyson appliances compatible with Google Assistant:

  • Dyson Pure Cool purifying fan (with smart connectivity)
  • Dyson Pure Cool Link” purifying fan
  • Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link” purifying fan heater
  • Dyson Pure Cool purifying fan
  • Dyson Pure Hot Cool purifying fan heater
  • Dyson Pure Humidify +Cool purifying humidifying fan
  • Dyson 360 Eye robot vacuum
  • Dyson 360 Heurist robot vacuum

Dyson appliances were previously compatible with Alexa and Siri, so it’s nice to finally see Google Assistant support. Dyson said the new functionality works on devices with Android 6.0 and higher, which is the majority of Android phones these days. Let’s face it, if you own a Dyson product, you probably own a relatively new Android phone.

Android Police notes that the control through the Google Home app is pretty limited at the moment, with only the ability to turn your Dyson air purifier on and off. Right now, it looks like you’re better of either using the Dyson app or simply instructing Google Assistant to do the work for you.

Samsung TV Plus expands to 12 countries across the globe

Samsung has announced plans to expand its TV Plus service to 12 countries across the globe. The expansion makes the service available in Australia and Brazil, joining existing markets such as U.S., Canada, U.K., and others.

The free Smart TV video service now offers 742 channels and brings access to over 60 million people worldwide. What makes the service such an interesting option is it’s completely free, offering access to news, sports, entertainment, and more. You don’t need a subscription or credit card to use it; just an internet connection and a compatible Samsung TV.

According to Samsung, TV Plus partners with around 300 of the world’s leading broadcast networks, content platforms, and digital creators. The expansion arrives following the launch of TV Plus on select Galaxy devices in the U.S.

“Throughout the pandemic, we have seen how consumers spend time at home and how much they value access to great media content,” said Seline Sangsook Han, Senior Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We have seen TVs become the center of entertainment – from being a source of news to a streaming on-demand partner. With our latest expansion into new markets and content line-up, we hope that TV Plus continues to be a premium at-home destination for Samsung Smart TV users all over the world.”

According to Samsung, TV Plus currently boasts 15 million active users, and with the service available to even more consumers, that number will likely grow. After’s today’s expansion, Samsung said it plans to bring TV Plus to Mexico, India, Sweden and more European countries in 2021.

Samsung said Galaxy device owners can also expect “added functionality and additional devices to become available in the coming months.” Hopefully that includes access to TV Plus on Galaxy devices outside the U.S. If you want to see which Galaxy devices are supported by TV Plus, follow this link.

That’s a $50 savings for a basic monitor that’ll get the job done!
