Chrome OS login screen gets fresh Material Design look

This year has seen Google work on a number of new features for Chrome OS, including a browser tab search, an improved Holding Space, and better handwriting recognition. Now, it looks like Google is ready to rollout a small visual change to complement the new features.

Android Police highlights an update in Chrome OS Canary that introduces a Material Design login screen.

The login screen is now even more reminiscent of the design found in older versions of Apple’s macOS. Unlike the old UI, the text field is now filled and translucent—as opposed to fully transparent with an underline—and uses a rounded corner radius. Characters typed into the area will now be center-justified, and the “dots” are slightly larger and more visit to the user.

Overall, the change appears focused on making improvements to readability. Android Police shared a video of the changes in action, which you can watch by following the source link. It’s not the biggest change to Chrome OS, but it’s a welcome tweak that makes the experience feel more consistent across the software.

Google has been relatively slow to implement tweaks to the design of Chrome OS, but they are coming. For example, Chrome OS users have been requesting a Dark Mode for a while now, and although we’ve seen the feature in testing, we’re still waiting for it to become available in a stable build.

Earlier this year, Google also began testing a Material Design look for the Files app. Bringing Material Design flourishes to smaller corners of Chrome OS has been a slow but steady approach, and it looks particularly nice worked into the login screen.

It’s unclear when the tweaked design to Chrome OS’ login screen will make its way into a stable build, but hopefully it’ll come sooner rather than later.

OnePlus Nord N10 5G gets OxygenOS 10.5.8 with improved network, camera, and power consumption

OnePlus has begun to roll out OxygenOS 10.5.8 for the OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which includes a number of important fixes. The company calls today’s update incremental, and the changelog definitely reflects that.

The update is rolling out in Europe and North America; the versions are 10.5.8.BE89BA and 10.5.8.BE86AA, respectively. Below is the full changelog:

  • System
    • Optimized power consumption of the system
    • Updated Android Security Patch to 2020.12
    • Updated GMS package to 2020.09
    • Improved system stability
  • Camera
    • Improved the shooting experience with the camera
  • Network
    • Improved connection stability of mobile network to improve the experience

With the holiday period finally here, the update features some timely improvements. OnePlus says it has optimized the power consumption of the system, which will hopefully lead to improved battery life. Meanwhile, the update also includes an improved shooting experience with the camera, which will be nice for taking photos of your new presents.

The OnePlus Nord N10 5G has still yet to receive an upgrade to Android 11, and as we already learned, the device will only receive one major Android update over its lifetime. That’s hugely disappointing for the device because it means it has a much shorter lifespan compared to other affordable Android handsets.

OnePlus Nord N10 5G Forums

Still, there’s a lot to like about the Nord N10 5G. The device features a 6.49-inch 90Hz display, 6GB of RAM, 4,300mAh battery, and a quad-camera setup, highlighted by a 64MP main lens. When the Nord N series was unveiled, OnePlus said the goal was to make cutting-edge technology more accessible to a wider range of users.

As always, OnePlus is soliciting feedback related to today’s update. If you notice anything wonky, you can let OnePlus know. Otherwise, OnePlus Nord N10 5G owners should hopefully enjoy an improved experience thanks to the update. It’s still unclear when the OnePlus Nord N10 5G will receive Android 11.

Here’s our first look at the Galaxy Chromebook 2, Samsung’s next high-end Chrome OS laptop

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to unveil a sequel to this year’s Galaxy Chromebook, and we already have our first look. The device was first rumored earlier this month, although very few details have been revealed.

The leaked press image of the Galaxy Chromebook 2 comes courtesy of Evan Blass on Voice. If you glance quickly, the new model looks very similar to what we saw earlier this year. I don’t think anyone will be complaining, because the Galaxy Chromebook featured a terrific design, highlighted by its 4K display.

While Blass doesn’t reveal what kind of changes we can expect, they’re likely to primarily be internal.

Very similar in appearance to the initial Galaxy Chromebook—rearranged ports and color patterns (the sides are now the same hue as the rest of the body, for instance) are the only differences noticeable to the naked eye—it’s hoped that the biggest changes will be internal.

The original Galaxy Chromebook launched with a 10th generation Intel Core i5 processor with up to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM, up to 1 TB of SSD storage, and a 13.3-inch 4K AMOLED display. The device launched for $999 for the entry-level model.

The Galaxy Chromebook was a nice device. The lightweight design and high-end specs gave it a very premium feel, and we’re expecting the same from the Galaxy Chromebook 2.

What we don’t know is when the device will be announced. Samsung is reportedly planning to hold an Unpacked event on January 14, where the company will unveil the Galaxy S20 series and maybe new Galaxy Buds. It seems like the perfect opportunity to also share details for the Galaxy Chromebook 2, considering the original model was also introduced in January.

With the first image of the laptop now in the wild, it’s very possible we’ll see even more details drop over the next few weeks.

Best Buy’s Last Second Savings Event has you saving $200 on select MacBook Pros, today only

I am definitely a procrastinator, although I normally get my holiday shopping out of the way early. There are definitely some people to wait until the last minute to pick up holiday gifts, though, and I normally say ‘good luck’ to them. But, well, since it’s officially my job to find you last-minute shoppers some good deals on good gifts, I guess I am the good luck this year. Best Buy also feels for the procrastinating shopper in all of us, too, with the Last Second Savings Event.

Running until Thursday, Best Buy’s latest sale offers nice discounts on all sorts of great gifts. They also have some great daily deals, and today’s deal is saving $200 on select models of the MacBook Pro. While the sales event is until Thursday, this particular sale is only until the end of the day. No procrastinating on this deal!

One important note is that this deal is not for the MacBook with the new M1 chip in it. These MacBooks are still 2020 models, but they’re laptops with the Intel Core i5 chips in them. If that’s not a deal-breaker, then you have a great deal on your hands!

The MacBook Pros on sale are the 13-inch models, os the price difference comes from the internal memory. You can choose between a 256GB or 512GB SSD, with a $200 difference between them. My personal recommendation would be to get the 256GB model and supplement it with an external SSD or HDD, but whether you want that extra hassle to save on space is up to you!

No matter what, once you’re done deciding, head over to Best Buy’s sales page without delay!

    MacBook Sale at Buy Buy
Need a new MacBook? The Intel Core models of the new MacBooks are $200 off today at Best Buy! This sale only lasts until the end of the day, so don't sleep on it.

If you’re looking for more deals, head on over to Best Buy’s Last Second Savings Event landing page. Maybe you’ll find a gift for yourself!

ProtonMail’s secure calendar service is now available as an Android app

Many of you are probably not well acquainted with ProtonMail, but it is, in very simple terms, one of the best services you should sign up for if you care about the privacy of your emails. It’s an end-to-end encrypted email service, which means that content is encrypted before it’s sent to ProtonMail’s servers and is unencrypted at the recipient’s end when the email arrives. This means that your email’s contents are never accessible by ProtonMail or any other third party, offering a huge advantage over other email services such as Gmail. The team behind ProtonMail recently released an encrypted calendar app called Proton Calendar earlier this year, and it’s now available for Android devices.

Just like ProtonMail, the Proton Calendar app and service offers the very same end-to-end encryption security that’s a headline feature from the email service, and it also means that you get the same privacy advantages as the rest of Proton’s services. That also includes the aptly named Proton Drive, an encrypted cloud storage service. No one but you can access all your essential events and critical information about them. Proton Calendar allows you to migrate all your existing calendar events and information from other calendar services, and it also allows you to manage up to 10 calendars. The app will also sync with the regular web app as well.

As it belongs to the same ecosystem as ProtonMail and Proton Drive, you get all the same security features on all three of them. The event title, description, location, and participants for every event are encrypted on your device before they reach ProtonMail’s servers. ProtonMail believes fiercely that you, and only you, should have access to your personal information, so they apply the same philosophy to all of their services.

Proton Calendar—both the app and the service itself—is currently available as a beta and it’s limited to paid users only, so if you’d like to check it out, make sure to check out ProtonMail’s paid plans as well.

Here are the Motorola phones that will get an Android 11 update

Motorola has announced which of its phones will receive an update to Android 11, along with some of the new features to expect. The list of phones is long; if you purchased a Motorola device in the past 12 months or so, chances are you’re covered.

Here’s the full list:

  • moto g9
  • moto g9 play
  • moto g9 plus
  • moto g9 power
  • moto g8
  • moto g8 power
  • Lenovo K12 Note

According to Motorola, Moto users should expect features like Chat Bubbles, streamlined device and media controls, and improved privacy settings. We also confirmed earlier this month that as part of Motorola’s Android 11 update, some of its phones will support a new Desktop Mode.

It’s unclear which Motorola devices will support the new mode, but we got a brief glimpse at it possibly running on the Moto G 5G Plus. Either that or it was the company’s upcoming Snapdragon 865-powered “nio” handset.

The plan right now is for Motorola to roll out Android 11 “in the coming months.” Unfortunately, we have no exact dates, and Motorola warned that its current plans could change.

“This information communicated is not a commitment or an obligation to deliver any product, product feature, software update or functionality and Motorola Mobility reserves the right to change the content and timing of any product, product feature or software release,” Motorola wrote in a blog post.

Motorola said that the rollout of Android 11 is also influenced by partner support. Hopefully, we’ll see Motorola release Android 11 sooner rather than later. There’s a long list of devices expected to get the update, and we’re hoping Motorola can hit every one on the list.
