Download: MIUI 12 stable update rolling out to several Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices

MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices that have received their official MIUI 12 stable updates. We’ll update it regularly with fresh builds!

MIUI 12: Features

MIUI 12 was announced in April 2020, following the footsteps of MIUI 11 that gained massive popularity thanks to Xiaomi’s hardware push as well as the feature abundance within the UX.

MIUI 12 Hands-on: 12 interesting new features added in Xiaomi’s Android OS

MIUI 12 brings along a cleaner UI, new animations, changes to navigation gestures, new live wallpapers, and AOD designs, privacy indicators for the microphone, camera, and location usage, improvements to multi-window, and Picture-in-Picture, an in-built sleep tracker, and many more changes throughout the UX!

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.

PlayStation 5 Restocks: When, where, and how to buy Sony’s new gaming console

The PlayStation 5 has, in short, been a nightmare to actually get your hands on, so far. With the limited pre-order stock, site outages, and random seconds-long PlayStation 5 restocks, consumers are being left frustrated and without a (massive) new console to adorn their entertainment center. It’s a frustrating situation for sure, and while we can’t offer you a surefire way to get a PlayStation 5, we can help by gathering everything you need to know in one place. Check out below and happy hunting!

By the way, we also have a restock guide for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S!

When and where will the PlayStation 5 be restocked?

While we believe the information below is accurate, it’s important to note that sometimes restocks don’t happen as planned. Restocks may go up late, websites may break, or retailers may just change their minds. This information is to help you plan as much as possible for possible restocks.

Things might look a bit rough, but there is hope for some PlayStation 5 restocks! Sony has announced via Twitter that more PS5s will come in stock throughout December:

However, the questions of ‘when’ and ‘where’ are still up in the air.

Your best bet at this time will be with PlayStation Direct, who is doing something a little different with their PlayStation 5 restocks. They allow you to enter a queue daily, giving you a chance to order the PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. So far, this seems to be a more effective method of trying for the PlayStation 5, but being in the queue doesn’t guarantee a console.

Amazon and Best Buy have had the consoles come in and out of stock at random intervals. If you check in occasionally, you may get lucky. However, with no way of knowing when they’ll come in stock, it’s hard to recommend them unless you’re also following a bot or Twitter account that follows stock from minute to minute.

Some other retailers had console stock during Black Friday, but have been silent about PlayStation 5 availability for the rest of the holiday season. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon!

Finally, if you don’t mind paying a hugely inflated price, you can pick up a PlayStation 5 from StockX. While it’s not something I’d recommend, if you need a PlayStation 5 in time for your holidays, then StockX will be the better reseller place to buy from. Unfortunately, eBay is rife with misleading listings that can turn your happy holidays into something miserable.

General advice for restocks

Trying to get your hands on something with limited stock is really, really stressful. Make sure to give yourself the best chance you can by following the advice below!

  • Make sure you have an account at the store, and all personal information is updated. Restocks of popular items like the PlayStation 5 put huge strains on websites. On top of that, when it comes to items like this, retailers will only allow you to hold it in your cart for a few minutes. Don’t waste your chance trying to update your address or payment information!
  • Start refreshing the page early. Often, retailers won’t put stock up at EXACTLY the moment they say. It may be a few minutes early or late. Get to the store page of the item you want before the restock time. You might get lucky!
  • Use Ctrl+F5, not just F5. This gives you a hard refresh that doesn’t pull store information from the cache. So, you won’t get outdated information and will be able to see the “Buy” button as soon as possible!
  • It’s usually better to be on the computer, rather than your phone. While that is not always the case, mobile websites aren’t always optimized for fast refreshing. Or optimized for mobile viewing at all, sometimes. However, sometimes you can have better luck on a mobile app than a browser site. It’s not very often, though, so it’s best to start trying with your computer browser, first.

Samsung Store’s TV sales continue, with discounts on the Q70T, The Sero, and more

If I must be honest, I always dislike trying to find a new TV during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Yes, there is a lot on sale, but it’s overwhelming to work through all the retailers and all the deals to find a TV that fits my space and other requirements. If I do finally find that TV, there’s also a decent chance it’s sold out, being available at insane doorbuster prices for about five minutes. I prefer to take my time when making such a big purchase. Thankfully Samsung understands, and their Samsung Store TV sale continues, offering the Black Friday discounts on a variety of sets.

We’ve already covered The Frame and Crystal TVs during the holiday shopping weekend, and both are still available at a discount here. I guess it wasn’t the last chance to save after all! If you’re looking for a TV set that doesn’t look like a TV at all, The Frame is the way to go. Meanwhile, the Crystal TVs are basic but powerful 4K smart TV sets, and they’ll be great for most average consumers looking for a new set.

But, these aren’t the only sets that are a part of the Samsung Store TV sale! There’s also The Sero, an interesting TV that can switch between landscape and portrait mode. It can easily mirror your smartphone screen, and you can save $300 on it!

Also, the 8K Q900TS smart TV is on sale, which is probably the most advanced Samsung smart TV on the market. You can save an incredible $2,500 on the 75-inch TV set, which Springs the total down to $5,000. That’s still incredibly expensive, but this is the bleeding edge of TV technology, so it’s not too surprising.

No matter what kind of TV you’re looking for, you’ll be sure to find it at the Samsung Store, so give the selection a look!

    Samsung Store TV Holiday Offers
No matter what you're looking for in a TV set, Samsung is sure to have it! Give their select of TVs at their holiday sale a look, and get yourself an early holiday gift.

Samsung Galaxy S20 on Verizon is already getting updated to One UI 3 (Android 11)

Verizon has published support pages for the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, all of which detail an update to One UI 3.0 based on Android 11. The support pages provide users with instructions on how to prepare for the new software.

Shortly after the support pages were published, a number of users on Reddit said their Galaxy S20 device has received the update, so the rollout from Verizon appears to be swift. The update to Android 11 introduces several new features, including conversation bubbles, categorized notifications, and One UI 3.0, which itself comes with its own host of new features.

Samsung has detailed what’s new in One UI 3.0 on several occasions, so check out our previous coverage for a better understanding of what’s new. Basically, One UI 3.0 is all about providing users with an experience that’s simpler and more optimized. “It provides you with meaningful innovations and improves your everyday life, ensuring that you adapt in the ever0changing world,” Samsung previously said.

One of the most exciting new features in One UI 3.0 is the enhanced Quick Panel, which allows users to easily switch back and forth between their music and videos. Users also get more information at a glance thanks to an improved notification panel.

On Verizon’s support pages, the carrier also highlights some of the new features in Android 11, including the improved privacy controls. One of the changes Google introduced is one-time permissions, which allows users to give one-time permissions to apps that need your mic, camera or location. The next time the app needs access to one of these three things, it must ask for permission.

As part of the update to Android 11, Verizon is also rolling out the November 2020 security patch. Verizon estimates that the download should take around 10 minutes. You can visit any of the support pages if need help preparing for the update.

[12/2 Update with Status] Big Changes To XDA Forums are Coming Soon

Update for 12/2: We did it! We made the move, but if anyone tried to use the forums last night (12/1), you know that we had a rocky start with some serious performance issues caused by some database problems. Those performance issues are largely fixed, and the forums are pretty speedy as of now, but there are still a handful of issues we’re actively working on. You can see our bugs/issues thread here, where XDA users are stepping up to help us identify what’s broken and help each other learn how to use the new forum system (hint: “subscribed” forums are now “watched” forums, etc). If you haven’t seen the new forums yet, check it out. Thank you for your patience as we migrate from old, 1990s forum software (vBulletin), and move into the future with a much more robust and modern platform (XenForo).

Known issues we’re actively working on:

  1. Missing threads for some users
  2. Pagination that doesn’t let you properly pick a page
  3. Some development threads not working
  4. Need to launch new XDA app asap (we’re targeting 12/3 or 12/4)
  5. More stuff (we’re reading every comment!)

Update for 11/15: we’ve been hard at work on bringing the next era of the XDA forum to life. The migration has taken a bit longer than we expected due to difficulty in setting up and configuring our new server cluster (because of high cloud infrastructure demand (thanks 2020!)). You can see our original announcement below, but we have the following updates to share:

  • The name for the new forum template will be XDA 2021
  • The forum migration will now take place on 11/30/20 and will result in several hours of downtime (we’ll communicate a precise timeline as we get closer to 11/30)
  • After hearing from many developer, we have decided that we will continue to maintain the resource necessary to keep XDA Labs running as an app distribution platform, though development on the app will be suspended until we establish a new development team (hopefully by mid 2021), and the forum component of the app will cease to work (though we’ll be introducing our new XDA forum app around 11/30/20)

Update for 11/30: The XDA Forums will be entering read-only starting 0400 GMT Dec 1st as we make our migration. Please be patient with us as this is a major project.

The original announcement follows:

Today we have some news to share: over the coming weeks, we will be launching a ground-up forum redesign, which we’re calling XDA 2020. We’ve outgrown vBulletin (which was never designed to handle a community our size) and are moving to XenForo, a more modern platform that powers some of the biggest and best forum communities that you might already be a part of. While it’s difficult to pick an exact date for such a large project, we’re currently targeting mid-October 2020 to make this change and we’ll communicate more specifics as we get closer to the date.

While we’ll be gaining a lot with XenForo, including a new forum design with multiple templates from which to choose (two dark modes, two light modes, and even a “classic” template that is similar to the look of the forum today) and overall much better performance, there are a handful of XDA features and products that we’ll be sunsetting. Doing so ensures we can confidently take a step into the future and make a break with some of the more resource-intense features of the past that our small technical team is unable to support. Some of these features you may not have heard of, which is fine; many of them launched without fanfare and aren’t used much.

  • All DevDB threads will revert to regular threads. DevDB Downloads will be removed, and we are significantly increasing the max file size for the attachment system on Xenforo. Any files uploaded via DevDB should be downloaded as they will be removed by 12/31/2020. To help ease the transition, we’re working on a mechanism to contact developers that have files on DevDB to provide download links and suggestions on hosting files elsewhere.
  • Real Life Review will be imported and flattened with no interactivity for now. We have some exciting future plans for reviews in the community that we’ll share a later date.
  • Our current search system, powered by Algolia, will be replaced by Threadloom, which is built for forums, and in our view gives a better search experience.
  • The main XDA app on the Play store will undergo a major update in the coming weeks to work with the new forum backend. Support for XDA Labs is tentatively ending at the end of this year, but we’re exploring options to keep it going, because we know that a small handful of developers use Labs to distribute their app.  We’re hoping to open source and find a team to take the reins and continue development, and if you’re a developer that wants to work on Labs, send a PM to svetius. We’d be delighted if Labs could continue, but as a small technical team and we don’t have the resources to maintain it. Over the coming weeks we will be taking steps to inform any developer that is actively using Labs about this change so they can plan accordingly.
  • All Tapatalk integrations (our legacy app for older versions of Android & integration into the main Tapatalk app) will cease to work. We recommend any Tapatalk users download the new XDA forum app once it’s available.
  • Authentication for Swappa, Xposed, etc will no longer work, but we plan to reintroduce XDA authentication shortly.
  • Our Forum API will be migrated to the XenForo built-in API

Attached to this post you’ll find a handful of screenshots that should give you a good sense of what XDA 2020 will look like, though they’re subject to change as we continue to refine the look and feel of the new templates. Undoubtedly, the migration won’t be perfect as it involves many moving parts. We expect 6-12 hours of downtime when we make the move, during which time we will have the forum in “read only” mode for as long as possible.

We ask for your patience and understanding as we make this big change. Once launched, we will make a feedback thread for issues, bugs, and comments.

We will follow-up once we have a confirmed launch date, and as always, thanks for all of your support.

Google News Showcase to provide free access to select paywalled stories

Google will soon provide readers with free access to paywalled stories in News Showcase, a service that supports news publishers by paying them to curate high quality content. The announcement is part of a broader commitment from Google to help the public find quality news.

Google said it will pay participating partners to provide readers with limited access to paywalled content for News Showcase users. “In return, users will register with the news publisher, providing a way for the publisher to build a relationship with the reader,” Google said. When Google’s News Showcase program launched, the search giant said it would pay $1 billion to news publishers in licensing fees.

News Showcase is also introducing a new type of panel, which will include a list of important articles selected daily by their favorite publishers. For example, if you follow a news outlet that covers local stories, the new panel will show daily updates on the most important local stories as selected by that newsroom. It’s a way for users to find valuable content from the news organizations they trust.

National and local publications will also now be shown within the For You feed. Google is also adding a dedicated area to discover new News Showcase publications with Newsstand on Google News. As part of a way to reach more people, Google said News Showcase will soon come to news.google.com and Discover.

Google also announced that since launching News Showcase in October, the number of publications that have signed on has doubled. There are now close to 400 news publications in countries such as Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, France, U.K., and Australia, Google said. The search giant said there are ongoing conversations to sign even more publications from other countries.

“As 2020 comes to a close, it is heartening to witness the progress of News Showcase and the enthusiasm from both publishers and readers around the world,” Google said.

Developers boot Windows 10 and Linux via virtualization on Apple Silicon Mac

Ever since Apple announced its custom ARM-based chipset for the Mac lineup, the Apple M1 SoC, modding enthusiasts have waited for the platform to be blown wide open. Users have theorized for a long time now whether it would be possible to boot Windows or standard Linux distributions on ARM Macs. After all, the mainline Linux kernel and Windows 10 are no strangers to the ARM world. All that’s left is the blood, sweat, and tears of developers interested enough in deciphering Apple’s custom ARM implementation. Now, thanks to the efforts of multiple developers, it is possible to boot Windows 10 as well as Linux on the Apple Silicon Mac, albeit via virtualization.

Alexander Graf, an engineer from Amazon on AWS, has been fiddling with the popular open-source machine emulator and virtualizer QEMU to add Apple Silicon support. He has put a ton of work into making the necessary Hypervisor framework patches to the QEMU codebase in order to run both Linux and Windows as guests on M1 Macs. We’re now at a point where almost all basic functionality, including virtualized audio and network interfaces, work. What’s even more interesting is that traditional Win32 apps built for the x86 architecture work just fine on the guest Windows 10 VM, thanks to the WoW for ARM64 emulation layer.

Several developers have banded together to fix the remaining bugs and make the installation process more user-friendly. Installing a virtualized instance of Linux or Windows 10 on your Apple Silicon Mac does not remove the main OS installed on it, so you don’t need to worry about breaking anything. If you want to get started with Windows 10 on your shiny new ARM Mac via QEMU, check out the video tutorial below.

There are still significant barriers before we’ll see Windows or Linux natively booting on ARM Macs, though. According to Linux creator Linus Torvalds, the closed nature of the integrated GPU and other components in the M1 SoC makes the porting process a bit complicated, “…unless Apple opens up“. While Apple isn’t planning to support Boot Camp on M1-based Macs, the idea of Linux or Windows running on a power-efficient, yet extremely capable ARM platform is utterly intriguing for anyone who prefers Apple’s build quality but doesn’t want to limit themselves to macOS. We’ll definitely keep an eye on the modding scene to see how these developments progress, and hopefully how it ends up benefiting the x86-to-ARM transition phase in computing.
