LG Wing lands in India with the LG Velvet 4G in tow

After officially unveiling the LG Wing last month, LG has now launched the quirky smartphone in the Indian market. Powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip, the LG Wing features an innovative design with a swiveling main display and a small secondary display hidden underneath. Along with the LG Wing, the South Korean OEM has also launched a 4G variant of the LG Velvet in the country featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chip. Here’s a quick look at the two new devices from LG:

The LG Wing is one of the most interesting new smartphones to hit the shelves in 2020 thanks to its unique design. And even though LG hasn’t had a great run in the Indian market over the last few years, the LG Wing does have the potential to turn things around for the company.

Aside from the sheer wow factor of its swivel mechanism, the LG Wing is a decidedly mid-range smartphone with decent specifications. It features a 6.8-inch FHD+ P-OLED main display and a 3.9-inch G-OLED secondary display. As mentioned earlier, it’s powered by the 5G-capable Snapdragon 765G chip, and it features 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

On the camera front, the device features a triple camera setup on the back with a 64MP f/1.8 primary camera, a 13MP f/1.9 wide-angle camera, and a 12MP f/2.2 wide-angle gimbal motion camera. For selfies, it has a pop-up 32MP f/1.9 camera. Rounding off the specifications is a respectable 4,000mAh battery with QC 4.0+ fast charging and wireless charging support. In terms of software, the LG Wing runs LG UX based on Android 10 with some unique features to make the most of the dual-screen functionality.

The LG Velvet 4G is a slightly modified version of the mid-range LG Velvet that was launched internationally earlier this year. Instead of the newer Snapdragon 765G chip, the LG Velvet 4G features Qualcomm’s two-year-old flagship Snapdragon 845 chip. But the rest of its hardware remains the same as the international 5G variant.

Much like the LG Wing, the LG Velvet comes with a 6.8-inch P-OLED display and LG makes up for the lack of a second screen on the device with a nifty dual-screen attachment. The smartphone features 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, a triple camera setup on the back with a 48MP f/1.8 primary sensor, and a 16MP selfie shooter that’s housed within the teardrop-style notch over at the front.

The LG Velvet packs in a larger 4,300mAh battery with support for QC 3.0 fast charging. The device also features IP68 dust and water resistance, and MIL-STD0810G certification. The optional Dual Screen attachment brings an additional 6.8-inches of screen real estate, with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixels. Much like the LG Wing, the LG Velvet 4G also runs LG UX based on Android 10.

Pricing & Availability

The LG Wing will go on sale in India starting November 9th. The device is priced at ₹69,990, and it will be available in a single Illusion Sky color variant. The LG Velvet 4G will go on sale in the country on October 30th. The device is priced at ₹36,990, and it will be available in a single Aurora Silver color variant. In case you wish to purchase the device with the dual-screen attachment, you’ll have to shell out ₹49,990.

This is Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi Watch Lite smartwatch

Following the launch of the Mi Watch Revolve and Mi Watch earlier this year, Xiaomi is now gearing up to launch an affordable smartwatch called the Mi Watch Lite. The upcoming smartwatch was recently spotted in an FCC certification listing, which gives us our first look at its design and some of its specifications.

As per the listing, the Mi Watch Lite will feature a rectangular dial like MIUI-powered Mi Watch from last year with a 1.4-inch color touchscreen display and a single button on the right edge. Although the render included in the listing isn’t high resolution, it does reveal that the watch will have a silicone strap with a traditional clasp.

The specs list included in the listing further reveal that the Mi Watch Lite will come with built-in standalone GPS, multiple fitness modes, water-resistance up to 50 meters, swimming mode recognition, and support for 24-hour heart rate monitoring.

Additionally, the listing highlights that the watch will go by the model number REDMIWT02 and it will feature a 230mAh battery. The Mi Watch Lite will feature Bluetooth 5.1 for connectivity and it will be compatible with Android 4.4 or iOS 10 and above.

As of now, we have no official information from Xiaomi regarding the Mi Watch Lite. However, the model number mentioned above leads us to believe that it may be launched under the Redmi brand in some markets.

The OnePlus Watch release date has allegedly been postponed

OnePlus has forayed into a lot of fields that are not just flagship smartphones. Now, we have mid-range phones under the Nord sub-brand, TWS earbuds, and even TVs sold under the OnePlus brand. But one that we’ve been looking forward to for quite a while is a smartwatch from OnePlus. This year, the rumor mill started talking about a device called the OnePlus Watch. This device, with a circular design, should have been released this month, but alas, OnePlus announced the OnePlus 8T and later on two new Nord phones, the Nord N10 5G and the Nord N100, and there was no mention whatsoever of the OnePlus Watch’s launch in any of the two announcements. Renowned leaker Max J has an explanation for this, though.

According to them, the launch of the OnePlus Watch was postponed indefinitely, and there is no revised date of announcement available just yet. They didn’t explicitly say that the device was shelved, though, just that it’ll come at a later date, and it is being guessed that this is because of a production or software issue. At the OnePlus 8T event, the company basically confirmed that they were working on a smartwatch, but did not unveil any other details about the device. It’s a considerable change of plans as the leaker had previously said that the device was gearing up for an October release, which clearly didn’t happen. So whatever happened with the device that considerably postponed its launch must have arisen quite recently.

We don’t know yet when the OnePlus Watch might get launched. It could be headed for a quiet launch before Christmas shopping kicks off. My guess would be that the phone might be launched together with the OnePlus 9 next year, which is seemingly headed for an earlier launch than usual. It would be the perfect chance for launching it as a companion device to the new flagship lineup, which would be presumably comprised of the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro. Only time will tell, though.

The Amazfit GTS 2 and GTR 2 are premium smartwatches with Amazon Alexa integration

After launching the affordable Amazfit Bip S and Bip S Lite earlier this year, Chinese wearables manufacturer Huami has now unveiled the new Amazfit GTS 2 and Amazfit GTR 2. The new smartwatches are upgraded versions of last year’s Amazfit GTS (review) and Amazfit GTR (review), with a slightly modified design and a couple of useful new features. The Amazfit GTR 2 has a circular dial that packs in a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 450 nits. The classic variant of the watch features a stainless steel body and a leather strap, while the sports model has an aluminum alloy body with a silicone strap. For fitness tracking, the smartwatch currently supports 12 sports modes, and Huami plans to add support for up to 90 modes in the future.

The smartwatch features Huami’s proprietary BioTracker 2 PPG heart-rate sensor for continuous heart rate monitoring, built-in GPS, and GLONASS for positioning, NFC, and support for SpO2 monitoring. The smartwatch also includes Huami’s OxygenBeats blood oxygen engine and SomnusCare sleep engine. The smartwatch is water-resistant up to 5ATM, it offers 3GB of onboard storage for up to 600 music files, you can use it to answer phone calls, and it even includes Amazon Alexa support.

The Amazfit GTS 2 features a rectangular dial like its predecessor, but it’s thinner and lighter than the first-gen model. While it looks pretty much the same at first glance, Amazfit has made some minor design changes that give the watch a more premium look. It packs in a 1.65-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 450 nits and an anti-fingerprint coating.

The smartwatch offers 5 ATM water resistance, blood oxygen monitoring, 24-hour heart rate monitoring, support for receiving calls, 3GB of onboard storage with music playback support, and built-in GPS and GLONASS. In terms of fitness features, the Amazfit GTS 2 features 12 professional sports modes, and Huami plans to add up to 90 more modes in the future. Much like the Amazfit GTR 2, the GTS 2 also comes with Amazon Alexa support.

Both the new smartwatches are built around the Personal Activity Intelligence (PAI) health assessment system, which delivers a personalized PAI score to help users easily monitor their health and activity goals. Furthermore, the smartwatches now also support third-party apps like Strava to let users migrate their fitness data to their favorite fitness apps. In terms of customization, both the Amazfit GTR 2 and Amazfit GTS 2 come with over 50 digital watch faces.

Huami claims that both the new Amazfit smartwatches also offer better battery life than their predecessors. The Amazfit GTR 2 is rated for 14 days of typical use and 38 days of basic use. The Amazfit GTS 2, on the other hand, is rated for 7 days of typical use and 20 days of basic use.

Pricing & Availability

The Amazfit GTR 2 comes in two variants — a Sport Edition with aluminum case and silicone strap and a Classic Edition with a steel case and leather strap. The watch goes on sale on October 30th at a starting price of $179/£159. The Amazfit GTS 2 comes in a single variant priced at $179/£159, and it goes on sale in the US on November 1. The watch will be available in the UK starting on November 15th.

OnePlus 8 series gets OxygenOS 11 Open Beta 3 with Canvas AOD

OnePlus today began rolling out the third open beta of OxygenOS 11 for the OnePlus 8 series, introducing a handful of fixes and enhancements. Among the new features, OnePlus has introduced Always-On Display support to its Canvas feature, which we detailed at the end of last month.

If you’re unfamiliar with Canvas, the feature essentially draws a wireframe picture based on a lock screen photo on your phone. It looks tailor-made to support the Always-On feature in OxygenOS 11. OnePlus said it also optimized the animation effect with Canvas, making the unlock experience smoother.

The latest open beta for OxygenOS 11 also optimized the UI smoothness of calls, fixed the issue that saw text blocked in some games, and updated the Android Security Patch level to October 2020. OnePlus also fixed an issue in Zen Mode where some UI elements stopped running when the mode was activated.

OnePlus has already rolled out the stable version of OxygenOS 11 for the OnePlus 8 series, which brings the aforementioned Always-On Display, improved one-handed use, and standard Android 11 features like bubble notifications support, Device Controls in the power menu, and a Conversations section in notifications.

Google Home 2.30 rolls out with full Nest Thermostat controls

Google today began rolling out an update for its Google Home app that introduces support for the latest Nest Thermostat. Google previously said the Home app would be the primary way to control the company’s newest smart home thermostat.

With the version 2.30 update, users will no longer need to rely on the Nest app, like when setting up the thermostat. Previously, the Google Home app only let you change the temperature and cool mode of your Nest Thermostat. To change any other setting, you had to open the Nest app.

In addition to being able to adjust temperature and other settings, the update will also allow users to see their energy dashboard. On the thermostat’s main screen, users will see the current temperature, which they can adjust by dragging the dial or pressing the plus or minus buttons. There are also buttons for different modes, temperature presets, hold temperature, and fan. If you click on the temperature preset option, you’ll see settings for Comfort, Eco, and Sleep temperatures, which can be edited at any time.

Google Home 2.30 is rolling out now on the Google Play Store, but it’s also available on APKMirror for those who want to sideload it.

T-Mobile’s unveils its TVision Live TV service alongside an Android TV dongle

T-Mobile has launched a live TV service called “TVision” that’s set to be available on November 1, and it starts at $40 per month for the most basic bundle of channels. The new service is available alongside a new Android TV dongle called the TVision HUB, which will be available for $50.

T-Mobile’s TVision Live TV features three tiers: TVision Live TV, TVision Live Plus, and TVision Live Zone. TVision Live TV is the most basic package and is available for $40 per month. It features roughly 30 channels, including ABC, NBC, and Fox. The bundle also offers some news and sports channels, along with general cable options such as TBS, TNT, and Cartoon Network.

TVision Live TV Plus costs $50 per month and includes roughly 40 channels, including regional sports. T-Mobile notes that its Live TV Plus option costs $15 less than YouTube TV while offering a similar bundle of channels. T-Mobile is also offering TVision Live Zone for $60 per month, which includes all the channels of the other two bundles plus ten additional channels, including NFL RedZone.

No matter which bundle you choose, the service offers 100 hours of cloud DVR and access to over 10,000 programs on-demand. Subscribers also get up to three concurrent streams for TVision Live, making it an excellent option for families.

Today’s announcement also includes two other streaming options. TVision VIBE features comedy, lifestyle, and drama content and costs just $10 per month for over 30 channels, including Hallmark and HGTV. The final option is called TVision Channels and allows customers to pick and choose what premium channels they want to subscribe to, including Starz ($8.99), Showtime ($10.99), and Epix ($5.99). If you want, you can combine TVision Live services, so you can subscribe to both TVision Live TV and TVision Vibe.

As for the TVision HUB, the HDMI streaming TV dongle runs Android TV and can be used to download your favorite apps like Netflix. The TVision HUB features support for Bluetooth headphones and game controllers and comes with a remote that can quickly access Google Assistant.

T-Mobile’s new service is entering a crowded market, going up against services like YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, and AT&T TV, just to name a few. But it’s trying to shake up the status quo by offering its bundles at a lower price, especially its TVision Vibe package. While the prices are affordable at launch, it’s worth noting that many of the top services on the market have raised their prices over the years, so we’ll have to keep an eye on TVision Live’s prices a year from now.
