Samsung is discontinuing Bixby Vision’s augmented reality features

Samsung’s virtual assistant Bixby offers a Google Lens-like feature called Bixby Vision. The feature allows users to translate words, look for products online, identify landmarks, and much more. Bixby Vision also includes a dedicated AR Zone which offers a couple of interesting features, like the ability to create AR emoji and AR stickers, check out home decor in real-time, apply makeup, measure objects, and more. However, according to a recent Android Police report, these AR-powered features may not be around for much longer.

Bixby Vision AR Zone notice Samsung

Samsung is reportedly pushing a notice to users trying to access Bixby Vision through the stock camera app, which states that the company is dropping support for the AR features by the end of this month. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the notice states:

“Thank you for using Bixby Vision. The AR features (Places, Makeup, Home Decor, Styling) on Bixby Vision will no longer be supported starting from the end of October. The AR features that have been supported by each country may be different. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Thank you again for using Bixby Vision. We appreciate your continued interest and support.”

As of now, it isn’t clear if Samsung plans to remove all of the features available in the AR Zone or if some of the more useful ones, like Quick Measure, are going to stick around.

Samsung only mentions four of the nine features currently available on my device, including Places, Makeup, Home Decor, and Styling. So there might still be hope for some of the remaining features. It’s also worth mentioning that Samsung is only dropping support for Bixby Vision’s AR features, and this move shouldn’t have any effect on the other features offered by the service, like the recently added Quick Reader, Scene Describer, and Color Detector accessibility features.

Google Camera Go adds Night Mode and HDR for better budget phone photography

Google Camera Go is a trimmed down version of the Pixel’s Google Camera app. The app was released earlier this year in March with the Nokia 1.3, a Snapdragon 250-powered entry-level device that runs Android 10 Go Edition. As you’d expect, the app is quite barebones, and it doesn’t include most of the cool features that you’d find on the full-blown Google Camera app. However, Google has been working to bring new features to the app to give entry-level smartphone users a taste of its computational photography prowess. Earlier this year in April, we learned that the company was working to bring HDR support to Google Camera Go. But while the feature is yet to make it’s way to users, Google has now announced that it’s introducing Night Mode to the Google Camera Go app.

In a short video on the matter, Google Camera Go’s Product Manager Pranay Bhatia revealed that the Night Mode feature has started rolling out to the Nokia 1.3, Wiko Y61, and the Wiko Y81 with its latest update. With the new Night Mode, users will now be able to use Google Camera Go to click high-quality images even in low light without using the flash. As with the Night Mode feature on the full-blown Google Camera app, the mode for entry-level devices makes use of burst photography to capture multiple frames of a scene and merges them to get a brighter image. Check out the video embedded below for some sample shots taken with the new feature:

The video also confirms that Google is working to bring HDR support on Google Camera Go, which will allow users with entry-level devices to click images with a better dynamic range. But the company hasn’t revealed a release timeline for the HDR feature yet. If you’re interested in learning more about Google Camera Go and its capabilities, do check out our hands-on review of the app by following this link.

Fossil Gen 5E are new Wear OS smartwatches with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100

Fossil on Monday introduced the Gen 5E series, a lineup of new Wear OS smartwatches that start at just $249. The new wearables are essentially paired-down versions of last year’s Gen 5 series, and come in two different sizes and a variety of colors.

The Fossil Gen 5E is available in a new 42mm size with smaller bezels and the same 1.19-inch OLED display with 416×416 resolution, and also three new 44mm styles. No matter which size you choose, the smartwatches start at the same price — and you get many of the same features as the Fossil Gen 5 wearables.

That includes features like sleep tracking, activity tracking, and a heart rate sensor. You can also use the Fossil Gen 5E smartwatch to make and receive phone calls, so long as it’s tethered to your Android or iOS device. The smartwatches also support Google Assistant and Google Pay.

Because the Gen 5E series is similar to the Gen 5, that means you get last year’s specs, including the Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor. The Gen 5E series will also have 1GB of RAM, a 300mAh battery, and water resistance rated at 5 ATM. The price is kept low because the Gen 5E doesn’t have an ambient light sensor or standalone GPS. Internal storage has also been halved to 4GB, while the crown on the right side doesn’t rotate for navigation.

The price is certainly attractive for Fossil’s new lineup, but it arrives shortly after Mobvoi introduced the TicWatch Pro 3 with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform. It may be worth waiting for Fossil’s upcoming Gen 6 smartwatches to see if they feature Qualcomm’s latest silicon, because we’re found that it dramatically improves performance. Still, if you’re on the market for a stylish Wear OS smartwatch, the new Fossil Gen 5E is one of the better options out there.

Fossil said the Gen 5E will ship sometime early next month, but you can pre-order it now on Amazon for $249.

The 44mm Gen 5E smartwatch is a stylish new option from Fossil. It features a stainless steel body and ships later this month.

    Fossil Women's Gen 5E Smartwatch (42mm)
Looking for a smaller version of the Gen 5E? The 42mm case size is slightly more compact yet packs all the same features as the 44mm option.

Android Version Android 10 with ROG UI or ZenUI

In terms of gaming, the ROG Phone 3 offers a lot of features that elevate the experience, including X-Mode, GameGenie and AirTrigger gestures, AeroActive Cooler 3, Bypass Charging, and more. These features combine to offer an incredible gaming experience — and if you pair a controller with the phone (like the ROG Kunai 3), you’ll never see mobile gaming the same way again, especially with services such as Stadia on the market.

We reviewed the ROG Phone 3 over the summer and concluded that not only is the device the king of gaming smartphones, but it’s among the best smartphones overall. About the only complaint we had is the fact that the device doesn’t feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, which the company said it eliminated in order to accommodate the extra PCB space needed for the external Snapdragon X55 5G modem.

The device runs ROG UI based on Android 10 out of the box, but the stock OS and kernel can be swapped after unlocking the bootloader. ASUS has sent several ROG Phone 3 units to developers on our forums, so if you’re interested in modding this gaming phone, keep an eye out on our forums in the coming weeks.
