Jabra announces the Elite 85t TWS earbuds with ANC alongside an upgrade to bring ANC to the Elite 75t

Jabra on Tuesday announced a new pair of wireless earbuds, the first from the company to ship with active noise cancellation. Available for $229/€229, the Elite 85t looks pretty similar to the previous Elite 75t, with some tweaks to make the latest version more comfortable.

Jabra said the Elite 85t comes equipped with a dedicated ANC chip, which users can control in the companion smartphone app to find their most comfortable listening experience. Users can also control the 85t’s HearThrough feature, allowing them to adjust how much noise from their surroundings filter through. A feature like HearThrough is great when you work in an environment where you want to block out noise but also be aware of what’s going on around you.

The Elite 85t also features a six microphone array (three on each ear, two on the outside, one on the inside) with improved wind noise protection for voice calls, Siri or Google Assistant voice assistant support, and 12mm drivers that promise “big sound and powerful bass.” The internal components are enhanced by the 85t’s tweaked design, which Jabra said is semi-open for improved comfort that relieves ear pressure. The headphones also feature oval-shaped ear gels for a better seal in the ear.

The Elite 85t offers up to 5.5 hours of listening with ANC on, 25 hours total playback with the Qi-certified wireless charging case and ANC on, and 31 hours total playback with ANC off. That’s comparable to Google’s Pixel Buds, which offer up to 24 hours of total listening time with the wireless charging case, although Google’s earbuds don’t offer ANC.

Jabra said the Elite 85t also features an IPX4 rating for water and sweat resistance and will come in titanium/black when they launch in November. They’ll also be available in gold/beige, copper/black, and black and grey beginning January 2021.

In addition to announcing the Elite 85t, Jabra also announced plans to bring ANC to the existing Elite 75t and Elite Active 75t earbuds via a firmware update in the Sound+ app. The company is able to deploy ANC to these earbuds thanks to the company’s “leading ANC know-how” taking advantage of Qualcomm’s digital audio processor. ANC will arrive via a free firmware update in October; the update promises to offer Jabra’s “standard level of ANC,” ensuring noise cancellation on lower frequencies. With ANC enabled, the Elite 75t series will offer 5.5 hours on a single charge.

Microsoft expands its App Assure program to Windows 10 on ARM PCs with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips

At Microsoft’s annual Ignite developer conference, the company announced its latest collaboration with Qualcomm to improve app compatibility for Windows 10 on ARM PCs powered by the latter’s Snapdragon compute platforms. Microsoft and Qualcomm have collaborated to expand the former’s App Assure program to cover Windows 10 on ARM64 PCs.

If you haven’t heard of Microsoft App Assure before, you’re probably not alone. This is a service geared mainly towards businesses and other large organizations, so most developers won’t have any interaction with it.

Here’s a quick summary of what it’s about. A lot of the time, businesses rely on running legacy software. This could be for budget constraints or because there’s no suitable alternative. With App Assure, Microsoft will work to get that software up and running in a modern Windows or Office environment at no additional cost to your business.

Legacy software isn’t the only source of compatibility issues, though. With the increasing popularity of Windows on ARM and Qualcomm-powered “Always On, Always Connected” PCs, there are a lot of programs that just don’t work on this new architecture. Well, starting today, Microsoft is extending App Assure to ensure compatibility with these devices.

If you have a program or app made for x86-based computers and you need it to work on ARM for your business, Microsoft will get it done. That includes having the vendor create a version of their software for ARM.

Of course, there are some limitations to this service. If a program is only designed for 64-bit computers, Microsoft won’t help you. And if the program relies on special drivers that won’t work on ARM or it relies on OpenCL/GL, then you’re also out of luck. But if all you need to be fixed is a simple Office add-in or a basic utility, then Microsoft has your back.

Now, if you’re reading this, you might be wondering how this affects you as an individual. To be honest, it probably won’t change very much for you. Many programs that businesses rely on are either purpose-built for specialized equipment or are only licensed to organizations. But in the long run, it’s possible we’ll see more Windows apps and programs introduce compatibility for ARM. If a vendor creates an ARM variant of a popular app because of App Assure, there’s a good chance it will also be released publicly.

Android 11 is coming to Android TV with better gaming controller support, auto-low latency mode

Android 11 has been released for smartphones after a thorough round of beta testing. The source code is now available, and the new software is now slowly rolling out to smartphones. Other Android-based platforms, such as Android TV, are set to get their taste of the latest release sooner or later. Following the smartphone release, Google has launched Android 11 for Android TV devices with a few key improvements that are essential to improve the TV user experience.

Most of the improvements you’ll see with this release, at least in regards to Android TV, are not really feature updates but rather under-the-hood platform improvements. The official announcement blog post mentions several performance improvements, such as enhanced memory management, as well as some privacy features like one-time permissions and more. Most of these improvements are also present in Android 11 for smartphones. Some improvements, however, specifically improve the experience of Android TV devices.

We have, for example, better gaming controller support. Starting on Android 11, Android TV devices natively support the Nintendo Switch Pro controller over both Bluetooth and USB, and they will also support the Steam Controller over USB. This also applies to smartphones, but in the case of TVs, this kind of controller support is more essential for playing games as you don’t have any kind of touch input to fall back on. Additionally, Android 11 for Android TV also supports the Auto Low Latency Mode introduced with the HDMI 2.1 spec, which can turn off graphics post-processing and therefore greatly reduce latency. We also have support for low latency media decoding, a new Tuner Framework, and extensions to the HAL implementation of HDMI CEC.

The Android 11 update is rolling out to ADT-3 developer kits (which were also eligible for the developer preview) starting today so developers can get their apps ready for other devices. As for availability on consumer devices, the update schedule is determined by OEMs, so you’ll have to contact your manufacturer to find out if the update is coming to your TV or set-top box.

A new Google Pixel 5 leak confirms it’ll have upper mid-range specs with a premium build

Soon after Google officially teased the Pixel 5, a couple of major leaks revealed the device’s design and most of its specs. Now, thanks to WinFuture, we have a more complete picture of what to expect, with new renders and more specs spoiling Google’s planned September 30th unveiling.

According to WinFuture, the Pixel 5 will feature a 6.0-inch flexible OLED display at 2340×1080 resolution (19.5:9 aspect ratio, 432PPI) and up to 90Hz refresh rate. The use of flexible OLED doesn’t mean the display is foldable but rather means that Google is able to trim down the bezels around each edge. The report also confirms the device will come equipped with Gorilla Glass 6, a one-generation leap over the Pixel 4’s Gorilla Glass 5 protective layer.

In addition to glass, WinFuture says the device is made of 100% recycled aluminum. It will weigh about 151g, which is considerably lighter than some of the hefty flagship smartphones released this year.

A previous report claimed the Pixel 5 would feature a dual-camera setup including a dedicated wide-angle camera. WinFuture corroborates that, saying the new Pixel will feature a 12.2MP main camera with dual pixel autofocus, 1.4μm pixel size, and f/1.7 aperture, and a second 16MP wide-angle camera that offers 107-degree FOV and f/2.2 aperture at 1.0 μm pixel size. The front-facing camera, meanwhile, is still 8MP, but the FOV is being reduced from 90 to 83 degrees. Interestingly, the Pixel 5 may be Google’s first Pixel phone with 4K60 video recording support.

As for the design, WinFuture’s renders match up closely to what we’ve seen before, including the rear fingerprint scanner and single hole-punch cutout. When the Pixel 5 launches, it’ll allegedly feature IP68 water and dust resistance and a 4,080mAh battery that supports 18W wired charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging. 18W wired charging is fairly slow compared to what we see from other flagship devices, but Google doesn’t use any proprietary charging standards that can reduce the longevity of the battery. Fortunately, the battery itself is a major upgrade, as last year’s Pixel 4 only had a 2800mAh cell while the Pixel 4 XL had a 3700mAh one.

WinFuture also confirms Google’s upcoming handset will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The report mentions the Pixel 5 will only support sub-6GHz 5G frequencies, but that detail could be just what’s supported for Europeans. It’s likely at least one model meant for the U.S. will support mmWave 5G. Regardless of region, the Pixel 5 should have dual SIM, dual standby support with its single nanoSIM card slot and integrated eSIM.

Not mentioned in this leak are any new software features. Although we know Google will preinstall Android 11 on the Pixel 5, we don’t know much about the new features it’ll have. There are a few Pixel features we’ve been tracking for a while now, including the “Columbus” double tap gestures on the rear and a new feature in Google Assistant to take over a phone call while you’re on hold, but there haven’t been any leaks suggesting these features will debut on the Pixel 5 in particular.

If other rumors are to be believed, the Pixel 5 should retail for €629 in Europe when it becomes available, presumably in early October. It is expected to be available in black and green colors. Google has an event planned for September 30, where the company is also expected to unveil the Pixel 4a 5G, a new Nest speaker, and a Chromecast with Google TV. There was also a recent rumor that claimed Google may introduce a more affordable Nest router, so we’ll be on the lookout for that as well.

The Fire TV Stick Lite could be Amazon’s next cheap streaming TV dongle

While cutting the cord has become more and more popular over the years, COVID-19 has dramatically boosted how much media people are streaming from the Internet at home. Cheap streaming TV devices like Amazon’s Fire TV lineup are the most popular gateways to cutting the cord, as these devices allow you to watch all of your favorite TV shows and movies from your streaming services of choice without any hassles. The Fire TV Stick 4K costs just $50, for example, and it offers basically everything the average consumer could ask for. While that’s already pretty cheap, Amazon seems to be preparing an even cheaper model, potentially called the Fire TV Stick Lite, to replace the standard 1080p Fire TV Stick (which is not available anymore at the time of this writing).

Images of the device come from German leaker Ronald Quandt over at WinFuture, and the device itself looks very, very similar to the standard Fire TV Stick, but with a few key differences. The stick itself has a simplified Amazon arrow logo like the 4K model does, and the remote, while looking very similar, does away with buttons like on/off while adding new ones like a television button at the bottom, though we’re not yet sure what that does exactly. Otherwise, the layout is very similar to what we’ve seen before.

As for the Fire TV Stick Lite itself, we don’t have any technical details to share right now, but given that it’s likely one tier below the existing Fire TV Stick 4K, we’re guessing it will only support up to 1440p or, more likely, 1080p content. The device comes with a power brick, a micro USB cable, an HDMI extension, and two AAA batteries for the controller. So overall, pretty standard stuff. As for pricing, the Fire TV Stick 4K is $50, so we’re expecting this Fire TV Stick Lite to be priced below that, making for a great bargain for those that want a cheap streaming TV stick. OnePlus 8T specs leak on Amazon: 65W Warp Charge, 6.55″ 120Hz display, 48MP quad rear camera, and more

The OnePlus 8T is coming. After a brief round of leaks and rumors, the smartphone company has confirmed the existence of the device and has now begun to tease it on their social networks. It will be announced on October 14th, as confirmed yesterday by the company. The 8T will serve as the late-year revision to the OnePlus 8, and we’ve already gotten to learn several details about it. We know how it will look, and we know most of its specs. Now, a prematurely-published Amazon listing has further confirmed some of the OnePlus 8T’s specs (via 91Mobiles).

First up, the listing states the device will have a 6.55-inch “Fluid Display”. OnePlus’ first phone with a 120Hz display was the OnePlus 8 Pro, while the OnePlus 8 had a more conservative 90Hz refresh rate. Tthe OnePlus 8T, however, will have a 120Hz refresh rate panel to match the 8 Pro, though it’ll be a lower resolution at FHD+ rather than QHD+. This was further confirmed by OnePlus themselves in a tweet and forum post as it will be one of the headlining features of this smartphone. In the forum post, OnePlus confirmed more of the OnePlus 8T’s display specs, including its touch sampling rate of 240Hz, its JNCD of around 0.3, 100% of DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, HDR10+ support, the presence of a flicker-detect sensor, 8,192 levels of brightness adjustment, and enhanced blue light filtering with “the same E3 luminescent material as the 8 series.”

Apart from the display, the Amazon listing also confirms support for 65W Warp Charge. This tech would actually be a first for OnePlus phones, as their proprietary Warp Charge technology, as of now, supports only up to 30W charging speeds. Other BBK-owned entities such as OPPO already use 65W charging on some of their phones, such as the OPPO Reno4 Pro, so 65W Warp Charge will likely be similar if not the same technology.

On the camera side, the OnePlus 8T will be packing a 48MP primary sensor in a quad-camera array, with a 16MP ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP monochrome sensor. This array doesn’t seem all that impressive compared to the one on the OnePlus 8, but if the main image sensor is the same one as found in the OnePlus 8 Pro, then that’ll be a big upgrade over the 8.

Out of the box, the OnePlus 8T will run OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11, the company’s latest Android-based software with a design inspired by Samsung’s One UI.

Finally, the listing suggests that the device will be priced at €699 for the 12GB + 256GB model, with the base model going down to €599. While this could be accurate, it’s not uncommon for pre-release retail listings to have the wrong price, so this bit should be taken with a bit, or rather a huge bag, of salt.
