Android TV gets Google Play Instant Apps, PIN code purchases, and more

Android TV is Google’s platform for smart TVs, boasting of more than 7,000 apps for Google Play on Android TV. The platform has seen steady success despite stiff competition from other homegrown alternatives. Android TV now boasts of 80% YoY growth in monthly active users, alongside adoption by 7 out of the top 10 smart TV OEMs around the world and over 160 TV operators. Google recently had announced the Android 11 Developer Preview for Android TV, and today, as part of its 11 Weeks of Android series, Google is highlighting the changes and improvements that the latest update to Android TV will bring to smart TVs. What’s even better is the fact that most of these features will be made available to older versions of Android TV (9 and 10) as well.

Android Instant Apps were first showcased at Google I/0 2016. With Instant Apps, users could try out apps without the hassle of actually installing them. Instant Apps worked by breaking down a native app into small parts, which could be loaded faster and downloaded, then executed quickly. It displayed the UI screen for an app, and as soon as it was closed, it was removed and did not need to be uninstalled, because it hadn’t been installed in the first place.

Now, Google is bringing the Instant Apps experience to TV with Google Play Instant. Developers for Android TV apps can now allow users to try out their apps instantly on Google Play with Google Play Instant on TV. Users can choose to install the app after they have experienced it. This should come in handy as smart TVs usually come with limited storage capacities as compared to smartphones.

Google is also making it easier for developers to test their apps as the official Android TV emulator now supports Google Play. Developers will now be able to test subscriptions faster through the emulator instead of needing to test on a real device all the time, which would have been fairly cumbersome on TVs.

PIN Code Purchases

Google Play on Android TV will now make it easier for users to make purchases by allowing them to input PIN code instead of a password.

Gboard TV

Gboard for Android TV is now getting new layouts and features that make better use of speech-to-text and predictive typing. This should make it easier to input data, especially through remotes that aren’t designed to be used heavily for typing.

Auto Low Latency Mode

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) was first spotted in June 2020 as a feature for the upcoming Google “Sabrina” Android TV dongle. Auto Low Latency Mode is a feature of the HDMI 2.1 specification that allows the device to send a signal to the connected TV to get it to disable any post-processing features that might add latency to displaying the video. A lot of televisions will market this feature as a “Game Mode” because it’s most useful for reducing lag when gaming.

As Google mentions, in Android 11 and later, a window can request that auto low latency mode or game mode be used, if available, by requesting minimal post-processing. This is particularly useful for game and videoconferencing applications, where low latency is more important than having the best possible graphics. Google also clarified to us that this is the only feature that is exclusive to Android 11 on Android TV, and it further needs to be adopted by device makers individually.

App developers can prepare their apps by including the ALLM option in their Android Manifest or branch their code by OS version (see example below), and then the OS will automatically use ALLM if it is available or operate normally if it isn’t.

Leanback Library Improvements

The latest leanback library focuses on simplifying app navigation and compatibility with improvements such as simpler top tab navigationpaging through media titles and shared codebases across mobile and TV.


As mentioned before, only Auto Low Latency Mode is an Android 11 exclusive feature. Other features will be made available to Android TV based on Android 9 and Android TV based on Android 10 as well.

TWRP is now available for the Motorola One Zoom, Motorola One Action, and Huawei P8 Lite 2017

TWRP recently added a bunch of new devices to its build roaster, including the Moto One Vision, Realme C2, LG V20, and more. Now, three more devices have joined the list: the Motorola One Zoom, Motorola One Action, and Huawei P8 Lite 2017 making it easier for owners of these phones to try out their favorite custom ROMs, kernels and mods.

The Motorola One Zoom was launched last year as a mid-range offering in the Moto One lineup, packing a 6.2-inch full HD+ LCD, Snapdragon 675 SoC, a 48MP primary camera and a 4,000 mAh battery. The TWRP build for the Moto One Zoom is maintained by kaneawk, the same man who brought support for the Moto One Vision earlier this week and also maintains many other Motorola phones. Assuming your Motorola One Zoom already has an unlocked bootloader, you should be able to successfully flash the TWRP recovery with a few simple fastboot commands from your PC.

Motorola Moto One Action

The Exynos 9609-powered Motorola One Action (review) has also received an official build of TWRP, courtesy of kaneawk. Huawei P8 Lite

Lastly, the Huawei P8 Lite from 2017 has also been added to the TWRP build roaster. The build is maintained by XDA Recognized Developer / Contributor DarkJoker360. If you’re still holding onto a Huawei P8 Lite and want to explore the world of custom ROMs and mods, hit the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to replace your stock recovery with TWRP. OnePlus’ HydrogenOS 11 comes with redesigned Weather app, Always-On Display, and more

During a live-streamed event earlier today, OnePlus unveiled the latest version of its custom Android skin for China — HydrogenOS 11. The software is based on Android 11 and it brings a ton of new features for OnePlus devices, including Always-on Display functionality, smart gallery, voice notes, multi-user Zen mode, an improved dark mode, and more.

As per a recent report from ITHome, HydrogenOS 11 adopts a new inclusive design that is expected to improve user experience. According to OnePlus’ Creative Director Zeng Xi, HydrogenOS 11 makes use of the simplest elements to create an inclusive design that will help users easily grasp information on the screen at a glance. The new wallpapers in HydrogenOS 11 also echo this design approach and serve to provide relevant information like the current weather conditions and time of day.

As mentioned earlier, HydrogenOS 11 includes quite a few new features alongside the new design. The company has finally included always-on display functionality in the OS, a new smart gallery with integrated image/video editing features, voice notes with support for AI-powered speech-to-text conversion, a one-handed mode, and a multi-user Zen mode to help users disconnect with friends and family.

HydrogenOS 11 also features an improved dark mode that makes use of different shades of black to highlight important information on the screen. The dark mode also comes with a quick settings toggle and support for time-based activation. It’s also worth noting that the new dark mode has passed the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) Double A certification, which means that it will provide a better dark mode experience to users with visual impairments.

Furthermore, HydrogenOS 11 brings a new ORM memory management system that’s expected to improve memory utilization, run more applications while using the same amount of memory, and reduce the chances of an app being killed in the background.

As ITHome points out, the software update will be available for all OnePlus devices launched after the OnePlus 5T. OnePlus has already started rolling out the first HydrogenOS 11 beta build for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, and the first developer preview build is expected to be released sometime next month. The stable version is scheduled to reach supported devices in Q4 2020. We’ll be posting download links and flashing instructions, along with the complete changelog, for the first beta release shortly.

Amazon will rebrand Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming, in line with other Amazon products like Prime Music and Prime Video

Amazon acquired Twitch, the video live streaming service, back in August 2014. Twitch has flourished since then and continues to be a market leader in the realm of video game live streaming despite competition from YouTube. Back in September 2016, Twitch had announced Twitch Prime, a service that provided premium features to Amazon Prime subscribers. These premium features included ad-free streaming, free add-on content, and even game discounts. Now, news has emerged that Amazon might finally look to rebrand Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming, bringing its branding inline with other Amazon products and services such as Prime Video and Prime Music.

According to an email sent by Twitch to its partners, and as accessed by industry insider Rod ‘Slasher’ Breslau, Twitch and Amazon will be rebranding Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming to “make it clearer” to members, and bring the service branding in line with other Amazon products such as Prime Music and Prime Video.

After four years, Twitch Prime will be rebranding to Prime Gaming to make it clearer for Prime Gaming members to discover all the gaming benefits their membership offers, including must-have content for the world’s most played games, and free monthly subscriptions to help you grow your audience from the millions of worldwide Amazon Prime members.

So what does that mean for you? More opportunities!

It means more chances to grow your viewership across all types of gamers from the Amazon Prime member base and opportunities to be featured in future Prime Gaming promotions.

Apart from the rebranding, there does not appear to be any other real change. With this, all the services that are available under Amazon Prime membership will be self-explanatory to new subscribers. Prime Gaming would thus co-exist alongside Prime Video and Prime Music in selected regions, along with the options of free and fast shipping from Amazon under the Prime membership.

Qualcomm reportedly wants to sell its 5G Snapdragon chips to Huawei

Last week, Huawei dropped an ominous announcement that the Huawei Mate 40 will likely be the last smartphone with a HiSilicon Kirin chip. Contract chipmakers have been barred from using US-developed tech to fabricate chips for Huawei after September 15, 2020, thus effectively barring TSMC from fabricating Kirin chipsets. Now, it appears that Qualcomm is lobbying for a license to sell its 5G Snapdragon SoCs to Huawei for use in its flagships and other lineups.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, US-based Qualcomm is lobbying the Trump administration to roll back restrictions on the sale of advanced components to Huawei. Qualcomm presents that the export ban will not stop Huawei from obtaining necessary components, and instead, it will hand over billions of dollars of Huawei sales to other competitors. Qualcomm presented Huawei as a customer for $8 billion worth of orders. And because of the license requirements upon US firms, this business now potentially goes to “two foreign competitors”, referring to Taiwan’s MediaTek and South Korea’s Samsung. Denying Qualcomm a license will help Qualcomm’s foreign competitors while hardly affecting Huawei as it can source components elsewhere. Granting a license would generate billions of dollars in sales for Qualcomm and help it fund development fo new technologies, Qualcomm argued.

If Qualcomm is allowed to sell chips to Huawei, it can fill in the large shoes needed in the absence of a Kirin flagship. The next generation of Kirin SoCs to be used in the Huawei Mate 40 have already been fabricated, but flagships and other lineups beyond are now in a limbo. Huawei is already experimenting with high-end MediaTek Dimensity chipsets in a few devices, so that could be the direction for the future. The Snapdragon flagships offer the best performance in the Android space, so it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds if Qualcomm is allowed to sell to Huawei.

OPPO Reno4 Z 5G and OPPO Reno4 Lite get certified for a possible global launch

Following the launch of the Snapdragon 720G powered Reno4 Pro (global) late last month, Chinese OEM OPPO is now gearing up to launch the 5G-enabled Reno4 (CPH2091) and Reno4 Pro (CPH2089) globally. The Snapdragon 765G powered mid-range devices, which were launched in China earlier this year in June, recently received Global Certification Forum (GCF) certification. This leads us to believe that the device will be launched in global markets in the coming weeks.

OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G

Along with the Reno4 5G and Reno4 Pro 5G, OPPO has also filed for certification for two new Reno4 series devices — the OPPO Reno4 Z 5G (CPH2065) and the OPPO Reno4 Lite (CPH2125). Certification filing for Reno4 Z 5G (CPH2065) has been spotted on the FCC, with the listing showcasing the design of the back panel.

A Bluetooth SIG filing for CPH2065 reveals that the device will feature a 6.57-inch HD+ display, a 4,000mAh battery, a 2.0GHz MediaTek octa-core processor, and it’ll run ColorOS 7.1 based on Android 10. Considering the given specifications, we believe that the Reno4 Z 5G will be powered by a low-end MediaTek Dimensity 5G chipset.

OPPO Reno4 Z

The OPPO Reno4 Lite (CPH2125) has also been spotted in a Bluetooth SIG filing, which reveals that the device will feature a 6.43-inch HD+ display, a 4,000mAh battery, a 2.0GHz MediaTek octa-core processor, and it’ll run ColorOS 7.2 based on Android 10.

Another device with the model number CPH2123 has been spotted on the FCC website, which might be a variant of the upcoming Reno4 Lite. The FCC listing doesn’t reveal much about CPH2123, but it does specify that the device doesn’t have 5G band certification. The Reno4 Lite will, most likely, feature a higher-end MediaTek Helio chipset. As of now, OPPO hasn’t released any official information about the devices mentioned above. We expect to learn more from the company in the following weeks.

Xiaomi Mi 10i revealed as possible Indian Mi Note 10 Lite

Xiaomi launched the Mi Note 10 Lite back in April as a stripped-down version of last year’s Mi Note 10. The Mi Note 10 Lite is a photography-centric device with its 64MP quad-camera setup and features a premium-looking glass design. Xiaomi may be thinking of bringing over the Mi Note 10 Lite to India, but only after rebranding it as the Mi 10i.

XDA Member and frequent Xiaomi tipster kacskrz had found evidence that Xiaomi was working on a new smartphone for India with the codename “tocoin”, back in June 2020. This codename was spotted alongside the marketing name of “Mi 10i” indicating that the device will be rebranded to this name in India. The codename “toco” belongs to the Mi Note 10 Lite, and “tocoin” belongs to the Mi 10i, indicating that this is the rebranding that we will see for India for the same device. Twitter user the_tech_guy brought this news back to the spotlight.

Xiaomi India meanwhile has not shared any indications of the device actually coming to the Indian market, so we might have to wait for a while for the device to actually land here.

Mi Note 10 Lite

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite is a 4G-only device, which should not be any problem for India as the country is still some months and years away from reliable consumer-friendly 5G. Instead of 5G, the Mi Note 10 focuses on photography without breaking the bank, featuring a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor in the primary camera on the back as compared to the 108MP sensor on the Mi Note 10. It is powered by a Snapdragon 730G  chipset. The two variants of the smartphone include 6GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB. The phone’s glass sandwich design and an AMOLED display with curved edges make it a good choice for a phone that also looks premium. The Mi Note 10 Lite also has a beefy 5260 mAh battery and a charging rate of 30W. Most of these features should be retained when the device comes to India as the Mi 10i, though we could see some variations in the RAM and storage capacities.
