Android 10 rolls out to the Motorola Razr with new Quick View features and more app integrations

The rebooted Motorola Razr launched in February and had a rockier start than the company hoped. There were some hardware concerns and it was quickly overshadowed by the similarly priced Galaxy Z Flip with better specifications. Another point in favor of the Z Flip was Android 10, whereas the Razr launched with Android 9 Pie. That changes starting today, and Motorola is further emphasizing one of the Razr’s advantages as well.

Android 10 for the Motorola Razr adds many of the goodies you’re familiar with. That includes gesture navigation and the fan-favorite system-wide dark mode. More importantly, though, it brings a number of updates to the Quick View display. The large display on the “outside” of the Razr is one of its big advantages over the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola is packing it with more abilities.

With Android 10, you can now swipe right from the Quick View to see a grid of favorite contacts and a dialer. You can make a call quickly without ever opening the phone. Swiping left on the Quick View will open the selfie camera so you can quickly snap a photo or video.

The biggest change to the Quick View, however, is how it displays notifications. Swiping up will open a full-color list of notification cards that look similar to what you’d see in the full notification shade. It’s still limited to a select number of apps, but it looks more like something you might see on a smartwatch now. You can even type out responses to emails with a full keyboard.

On top of the improved notifications, Motorola is integrating more apps with the Quick View display. You can access Google Maps turn-by-turn directions and control music from Spotify, YouTube Music, and Pandora from the Quick View display. All of this works alongside the existing Moto Display.

Android 10 for the Motorola Razr is rolling out globally today. According to Michael Fisher, the company has also said Android 11 is coming.

TWRP is now officially available for the Exynos Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE, and Mi Translator

Android 10’s recovery implementation and the introduction of the “super” partition containing multiple dynamically resizable partitions has considerably slowed down the process of porting TWRP to devices running Android 10 out of the box. However, older non-Pixel phones that have been updated to Android 10 via OTA are not affected by those changes because they are not required to migrate to the new super partition scheme. Owing to this, XDA Recognized Developer corsicanu has brought official TWRP support for the Exynos Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with full compatibility with the One UI 2.0/Android 10 firmware. In addition, XDA Senior Member TingyiChen has brought support to the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Mi Translator devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Official TWRP Support

Owners of the Exynos variant of the 2018’s stylus-dwelling Samsung flagship can grab the ODIN-flashable TAR archive, while one can also pick the raw IMG file to flash from an existing TWRP environment. According to the developer, the current build works with the Android 9 Pie-based firmware as well. The U.S. and Canadian Galaxy Note 9 models with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, however, are still unsupported because their bootloaders cannot be unlocked.

Thanks to their internal similarities, the Exynos Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have also received updated TWRP builds alongside the Galaxy Note 9 from the same developer. The Galaxy S9 duo did receive official TWRP support back in 2018, but the former maintainer kind of abandoned them for a long time. Corsicanu is now the official TWRP maintainer for these phones, and he has created a common discussion thread for the S9/S9+.

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 originally debuted with Samsung Experience 9.0/9.5 based on Android Oreo, which means both of them have already received their second major Android OS update. While the chances of them getting future major software updates from Samsung is slim, the availability of official TWRP, as well as official LineageOS support, does extend the potential lifetime of these devices if you’re willing to tinker a bit.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Mi Translator Official TWRP Support

On that note, developer Isaac Chen, also known as TingyiChen on our forums, has ported TWRP to the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and Mi Translator. Both of these devices are only available in China, though, and the latter isn’t even a smartphone. Despite not being available globally, the Mi 8 SE has a surprising amount of activity on our forums, so we encourage you to check out the official TWRP build if you’re interested in flashing a custom kernel or AOSP-based custom ROM.

Huawei P30 Pro New Edition launches with Google apps support in a new Silver color

Ever since Huawei was placed on the US government’s “Entity List,” the company has not been able to release a phone with Google apps. Phones that were previously released can still use Google apps, though, and Huawei is taking advantage of this detail. As previously reported, the Huawei P30 Pro New Edition is a re-release of the phone from 2019 in a new color.

Huawei P30 Pro XDA Forums

Since this is only a re-release, which it needed to be in order to keep Google apps, there aren’t many differences. The P30 Pro New Edition is available in the new “Silver Frost” color from the P40 Pro (along with the old black and Aurora). The specifications are identical to the “old” P30 Pro, but you only get one storage option: 256GB.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Huawei P30 Pro, the device features a 6.47-inch OLED display, Kirin 980 SoC, 8GB of RAM, quad rear cameras with 5X optical zoom, and a 4,200 mAh battery. It’s certainly still a very solid device in 2020, even if some of the specifications are being surpassed by other smartphones.

The last difference is the price, which you would expect from a re-released smartphone. The P30 Pro New Edition will go on sale in Germany on May 15th for €749 ($810). Anyone who buys the device will get a free pair of Huawei FreeBuds 3 and an offer to buy the Watch GT 2 for €99. The device will only be available for around a month as supplies are limited.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 rumored to have a 120Hz display with true variable refresh rate support

There’s no question that high refresh rate displays are a hot trend in smartphones. This year, we’ve seen an explosion in the popularity of 90Hz displays among flagships and even some mid-range devices. Some devices are even sporting 120Hz refresh rate displays while others go as high as 144Hz. Samsung is no stranger to bleeding-edge display technology, owing to the fact that the company’s display subsidiary is one of the best in the industry, so it should come as no surprise that the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series is rumored to feature impressive new display technology.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series was the company’s first smartphones with 120Hz refresh rate OLED displays. However, these devices only operate 120Hz at FHD+ resolution, not the maximum WQHD+ resolution that is possible with the display. This is likely due to the power consumption required as Samsung is trying to mitigate battery drain as much as possible on these devices. However, the company may have solved this problem with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series.

According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+ will feature “LTPO” (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) backplane technology which will be used with newer OLED panels. The result is big power savings (according to IHS Markit, yielding about 5-15%) and enable support for true variable refresh rate switching. That would mean the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+ will be the first smartphones with an LTPO-backed OLED panel (the two Razer Phones and Apple’s iPad Pro support variable refresh rate with LCDs owing to the use of IGZO driving transistors).

The support for variable refresh rate switching is key here. Currently, Android smartphones with high refresh rate OLED panels can only switch between a few preset display modes consisting of fixed resolution and refresh rate combinations. True variable refresh rate switching would allow the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 to ramp up and down the refresh rate in a much more dynamic manner, improving power consumption in the process.

Mr. Young’s tweets also lay out some specifications for the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+. He says the Note 20 will have a 6.42-inch display at 2345 x 1084 resolution (404 PPI) and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The Note 20+ will have a 6.87-inch display at 3096 x 1444 resolution (497 PPI) and 19.3:9 aspect ratio. He goes on to say there will not be a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra model, “but the Galaxy Fold 2 will be your Ultra.”

Thanks to XDA Display Analyst Dylan Raga for his input.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ is now supported by Bixby Routines

There are a lot of great services out there for creating “routines” with your gadgets. If you’re in the Samsung ecosystem, Bixby Routines is a decent option. It has many of the Tasker-like features you would expect from a routines service, including integration with devices. The recently launched Galaxy Buds+ are now supported as well.

Previously, the Galaxy Buds+ could only be used for “If” actions, like any other Bluetooth device. That means you could automate actions when your buds connect to your phone. A recent update to Bixby Routines, however, added “Then” clauses for the Buds+. Now you can use the Galaxy Buds+ as the receiving end of a routine, so “if” something happens, the Buds+ can perform an action.

Reddit user madn3ss795 provided a few examples of what you can do with the Galaxy Buds+ in Bixby Routines:

  • Gaming Mode only when gaming
  • Ambient sound on when you’re outside your house
  • Equalizer Clear when using a news app
  • Enable/disable reading notification only at a set hour and/or place

You can quickly see how Bixby Routines can be a handy addition to the Galaxy Buds+. Having features like Gaming Mode and Ambient sound can be great, but ultimately if you find it cumbersome to switch them on and off, you’re not going to use them. The screenshot above is from the Galaxy S20+ with One UI 2.0.

Google Pixel 4a launch may be delayed until June

We’ve been tracking the Pixel 4a since the end of 2019 and we’re finally getting close to the official announcement. We first spotted the “Sunfish” codename for the Pixel 4a in February, but the leaks really started pouring in when the device showed up in a hands-on video in March. It’s now looking like the Pixel 4a could finally be announced next month.

Google Pixel 4a Forums

It was widely assumed the Pixel 4a would still be announced at the time of Google I/O, which would have been this week. However, according to a new report, the information from Vodafone’s database, the launch has been delayed. The device was originally listed with a launch date of May 22nd, but it was later reset. The launch date is now listed as June 5th.

Caschys Blog speculates that this delay could be to announce the phone during the Android 11 Beta Launch Show, which just happens to be on June 3rd. This is purely speculation, but it does make a lot of sense. Google’s teaser for the event mentions revealing “a whole bunch of other stuff we’re not ready to tell you about yet” and “Let’s hope that doesn’t leak.”

Of course, it’s entirely possible that Google will simply send out a press release any day now and announce the phone. The delay in Vodafone’s system could be only for the European launch. Google typically launches products on the same day internationally, but you never know. Regardless, we should be seeing the Pixel 4a very soon.

Rumored Google Pixel 4a Specifications

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 730
  • GPU: Adreno 618
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Internal storage: 64GB UFS 2.1
  • Display: Single hole-punch 5.81-inch display, 2,340 x 1,080 resolution, 443 dpi, 60Hz refresh rate
  • Rear camera: 12.2 MP Sony IMX363, f/1.73 aperture, 1.4µm pixels, OIS, EIS, LED flash, 4K video recording, Autofocus
  • Front camera: 8.0 MP Sony IMX355, f/2.0 aperture, 1.14µm pixels, EIS, Fixed focus
  • Connectivity: 4G, Dual SIM, GPS, WiFi 5, Bluetooth, GLONASS
  • Ports: USB Type-C, 3.5mm headphone jack

[Update: May 11 builds] Download the MIUI 12 Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices

Update 1 (05/11/2020 @ 9:30 AM ET): MIUI 12 closed beta download links refreshed with newer releases (compiled on May 11). The article as published on April 28, 2020, is preserved below.

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12 – is finally here. The company has dropped the curtain yesterday, alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 11, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and many new features. We have already extracted the new wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi and Redmi devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. The beta MIUI 12 builds listed below are based on either Android Pie or Android 10, depending on the device.

Download: MIUI 12

You can download the latest beta (20.5.11) of MIUI 12 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.
