Google Phone app rolls out Call Recording for some Nokia phone users in India

The Google Phone app is the default dialer on Google’s Pixel devices, Xiaomi phones sold in the EU, and Android One phones like HMD Global’s Nokia-branded smartphones. Much like other stock apps from the company, it doesn’t offer as many features as other default dialer apps from companies like Xiaomi. This means that Xiaomi users in the EU currently don’t have access to features like automatic call recording and flip to silence which are available on the stock MIUI dialer in other regions. Over the last couple of months, however, Google has been working to add new features to its dialer app in an effort to bring it to the same level as some of its competition.

Earlier this year in January, an APK teardown of Google Phone v43 surfaced evidence which suggested that Google was working on a call recording feature for the app. With the rollout of Google Phone v44 later that month, we were able to fully activate the feature to show exactly how it would work upon release. It seems like the feature is finally ready for prime time, as it’s now rolling out to some Nokia phones in India. According to a recent post on the official Nokia community forums, a Nokia 7 Plus user has already received the feature on their device. The user initially believed that they only got the feature because they were connected to a VPN server in the U.S, but we’ve now seen reports from users on Telegram that other Nokia 7.2, Nokia 8.1, and Nokia 7 Plus users in India have also received the feature.

As of now, the feature is only available for a small subset of Nokia users in the country and it’s unclear whether an app update or server-side config change triggered the feature. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Google is also working to add the flip to silence feature in the Google Phone app. The feature was recently spotted in an APK teardown of Google Phone v47, along with a new feature that will allow users to answer calls with 1-way video.

Google Play Store is getting a Kid section with “Teacher Approved” Apps

Any parent will tell you that managing screen time is a big concern when you have kids. The amount of time kids can spend in front of screens is one issue, but even more important is what is shown on the screen. Now, more than ever, parents are relying on managing screen time for their kids to cope with stay-at-home orders. It can be difficult to find apps and games that are appropriate and educational. The Google Play Store will make this easier with a new Kids tab and a “teacher approved” label.

Google has teamed up with academic experts and teachers across the US to rate kid-friendly content on the Play Store. Apps are rated on a number of factors, including age-appropriateness, quality of experience, enrichment, and delight. You’ll see this information on the app page listed under the “Teacher approved” label with descriptions for why the app is approved.

The Kids tab will be replacing the existing Family tab in the Google Play Store. Once this change is rolled out, there will be a “Teacher approved” section that curates these apps. If you’re a Google Play Pass subscriber, the selection is available within “Apps and games for kids.” These new features will be rolling out in the US over the next few days, and Google will be expanding to more regions in the “coming months.”

Nokia 8 Sirocco and Samsung Galaxy A30s receive stable Android 10 update

HMD Global relies on a number ODMs like Foxconn (and its subsidiary, FIH Mobile) and Longcheer to manufacture its Nokia-branded Android smartphones. While the practice is certainly useful to keep costs down, it has unintentionally exposed the company’s internal firmware hosting servers multiple times. For example, the pre-release Android 10 update packages for the Nokia 5.1 Plus and the Nokia 8 Sirocco have been leaked quite recently. The latter has now started receiving a stable Android 10 update across the globe.

Following the footsteps of the Nokia 3.2 as well as the Nokia 4.2, HMD Global has opted for a staggered update rollout plan for the Nokia 8 Sirocco to ensure a smooth transition. The Android 10 OTA should reach 100% of users across 43 regions that the company currently operates in by April 20th. The build itself (software version V5.120) comes with the April 2020 security patches and is about 1.4GB in size.

The Samsung Galaxy A30s, on the other hand, is also getting a stable Android 10 update with Samsung’s One UI 2.0 software on top. The base version number of the new build is BTD1, which is now available for several regional models of the phone (SM-A307FN/GN/GT) except the American variant, SM-A307G. The Android security patch level (SPL) of this new firmware is March 2020.

The OTA is rolling out in batches, but users can bypass the queue and download the updated builds directly from the Samsung update server using tools like Frija. Samsung has yet to publish the relevant kernel source code on its website, though. They also skipped the bootloader version update so power users still have the freedom to downgrade their phones to older Android 9 Pie-based builds.

LineageOS adds support for the Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, Realme 2 Pro, and drops the Redmi Note 4

LineageOS is one of the most popular custom ROMs available for Android devices, and the team behind the project recently released the first LineageOS 17.1 builds based on Android 10. A handful of Google devices, such as the original Pixel lineup and the Google Nexus 6, couldn’t make it to the initial roster, but eventually secured spots a few days later.  Now, the LineageOS team has extended support for a few more devices, including the Exynos Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, Galaxy Note 9, and the Realme 2 Pro.

Back in January 2020, Samsung rolled out stable One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 to the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy Note 9. Since December of 2019, however, XDA Senior Member abtekk started compiling unofficial builds of LineageOS 17.1 for these phones to satisfy AOSP lovers. Several other members from the community, such as Synt4x.93, CodeFox, and jesec, have joined forces since then, and the devices (to be precise, the Exynos-powered global variants) are now ready to receive a taste of official LineageOS 17.1 under the maintainership of XDA Recognized Developer erfanoabdi.

The LineageOS team has also extended LineageOS 17.1 support to the BQ Aquaris X, BQ Aquaris X Pro, LeEco Le Max2, and the Yandex Phone. These phones have already been officially supported by LineageOS 16 to date, but their Android 10-based builds are now mature enough to step into the next stage. XDA Recognized Developer Quallenauge is maintaining the two BQ phones together with Team aquaris-dev. The LeEco Le Max2, on the other hand, is being supported by the community since the Android Marshmallow/CyanogenMod 13.0 days.

Next up is the Realme 2 Pro. This phone is getting official LineageOS 16 support due to the efforts of XDA Senior Member shubhambhise. Realme is planning to deliver stable Android 10 to the Realme 2 Pro in June 2020, so it’s possible the phone will get support for LineageOS 17.1 in the near future.

Not all of today’s news is good news, though, as the fan-favorite Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is no longer officially supported by the LineageOS team. The maintainer, XDA Senior Member Aryan Kedare, has dropped support as he doesn’t own the device anymore. Third-party development for the Redmi Note 4 is still on high-gear, fortunately, and users can choose from a number of Android 10-based custom ROMs from our forums to breathe new life into the phone.

Message Forwarder app can forward incoming SMS, MMS, and Call notifications via SMS or email

If you own two or more phones but like to use or carry around just one around at a time, chances are that you miss a lot of notifications. By not being almost always available to attend important calls or notifications, you can risk potential business or personal links. So, we have an app that lets you beat it – “Message Forwarder” automatically forwards alerts about incoming calls, SMS, MMS to another number or email.

To get notifications on another number, the app requires you to configure different scenarios and triggers. The setup process comes with descriptions and hints on each screen that make it very easy. To begin, you create a new set of rules and select the kind of messages and notifications you need alerts for. For now, the app only supports SMS, MMS, and Phone calls, and not any other third-party application like WhatsApp. If you want, you can select only important contacts from your phonebook to avoid receiving alerts about each message or call.

The alerts can be sent to multiple numbers and email IDs separately. Note that for sending the message to another number, standard messaging charges will apply as the app uses the phone which has the app installed. For e-mails, you need to either set up a sender’s email ID or authorize an existing account saved on your phone. Next, you can either choose to send the messages as they are or choose a static message like “Check other phone” and the same message would show for all messages or calls you receive.

You can also add filters to find a specific word or phrase within the contents of the messages. Likewise, you can also block forwarding for SMS or MMS messages that contain a specific keyword. Then you can choose to keep or hide the name of the original sender or caller. Lastly, you can set schedules based on how you use your devices for the Message Forwarder app to run.

Do note that the app works on a freemium model so you’ll either need to buy the premium version or watch video ads to gather credits. I used the app and there was almost no latency but that might also vary with the network on your primary phone.

Download OnePlus 7T Pro custom ROMs: LineageOS 17.1, Resurrection Remix, and more

One of the main reasons behind OnePlus’ popularity is the company’s stance towards the developer community. The company is known for its timely kernel source code releases and promotion of custom ROMs for EOL devices among other things, which makes it a fan favorite in the developer community. Thanks to this, third-party development for its last flagship, the OnePlus 7T Pro (review), took off to a great start. In our previous development update for the 7T Pro, we shared a couple of tools and custom kernels for the device.

However, due to the fact that the device launched with Android 10, which made dynamic partitions mandatory, there’s still no official or stable TWRP port for it yet. This has made development difficult because of the risks of getting the device soft bricked and losing data due to not having a full backup available. Regardless, some custom ROM developers have managed to port their work over to the OnePlus 7T Pro. Here’s a list of all the custom ROMs that you can download for your 7T Pro right now:

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1

An unofficial build of the popular LineageOS custom ROM based on Android 10 is now available for the OnePlus 7T Pro, allowing you to experience pure stock Android on the device without any of OnePlus’ additional features. Download the ROM from the forum post linked below and carefully follow the instructions given in the post to get it up and running on your device. Do note that while the thread hasn’t been updated in a while, the developers are still releasing new builds for the device.

Resurrection Remix

Resurrection Remix is another popular Android 10-based ROM that’s now available for the OnePlus 7T. Unlike LineageOS, which aims to offer a stock Android experience, Resurrection Remix is chock full of customization options that you can use to completely transform your device. The ROM includes a mixed bag of features from other popular ROMs like LineageOS, SlimRoms, Omni ROM, and the original Remix ROM, which means that you can expect to find everything that you might need to customize your device.

Along with these custom ROMs, developers have also released a modded version of the OxygenOS recovery with ADB enabled that you can use to access your OnePlus 7T Pro’s file system from recovery till a TWRP port is released for the device. It’s also worth noting that without TWRP, you’ll only be able to flash the aforementioned custom ROMs by using the fastboot method or using Lineage Recovery.
