[Update 2: Sprint 5G Model] OnePlus says the 7 Pro 5G will get Android 10 in Q1 2020

Update 2 (3/20/20 @ 11:40 AM ET): OnePlus is rolling out Android 10 with OxygenOS 10 to the Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.

Update 1 (3/3/20 @ 11:40 AM ET): The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is finally getting its Android 10 update with OxygenOS 10.

We’ve been talking a lot about the OnePlus 7T series lately, which initially launched without a separate 5G model. That was surprising considering OnePlus was one of the first to launch a 5G phone. We now know the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition will be launching with 5G on T-Mobile, but we’ve also got some good (and bad) news for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G on EE. It’s getting Android 10, but OnePlus says it’ll happen next year.

OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10 was released for the non-5G OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 over a month ago. However, the 5G variant was left out in the cold, which certainly didn’t make owners happy. There’s a lengthy complaint thread over on the OnePlus Forums about the device. A OnePlus Community Manager took to that thread to share the news that they plan to release Android 10 for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G EE in Q1 2020.

As a reminder, this is the changelog that OnePlus included with the OxygenOS 10 update for the 7 and 7 Pro (non-5G):

System
- Upgraded to Android 10
- Brand new UI design
- Enhanced location permissions for privacy
- New customization feature in Settings allowing you to choose icon shapes to be displayed in the Quick Settings
Full-Screen Gestures
- Added inward swipes from the left or right edge of the screen to go back
- Added a bottom navigation bar to allow switching left or right for recent apps
Game Space
- New Game Space feature now joins all your favorite games in one place for easier access and better gaming experience
Smart display
- Intelligent info based on specific times, locations and events for Ambient Display (Settings – Display – Ambient Display – Smart Display)
Message
- Now possible to block spam by keywords for Message (Messages – Spam – Settings – Blocking settings)

“Q1 2020” puts the release date somewhere between the first of the year and the end of March. It should also be noted that the Community Manager explicitly mentions the EE model, so we have no idea when Android 10 will arrive for OnePlus 7 Pro 5G models in other parts of the world. That’s a pretty big bummer as the 5G model costs more and has received a lot less support.

Update 1: Rolling Out

As promised, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G sold by EE in the UK and Elisa in Finland is now getting Android 10 with OxygenOS 10. The company said the device would get the update in Q1 and they have followed through. This is the same update with the same changelog as outlined in the original article above. Update 2: Sprint 5G Model

Google Messages 5.9 adds an image markup tool

Messages is Google’s main messaging app right now and the company is pushing it as hard as they can. Most of their efforts have been toward bringing RCS support to as many people as possible. Features are obviously important as well, and Google is now adding an image markup tool to the app.

The image markup tool in Messages is currently in beta testing. This is very similar to the Markup tool we’ve seen in Google Photos and built into Pixel devices. You can access the editor by attaching an image to a message and tapping on the image before sending it. There will be a squiggle and text icon in the top right corner that allows you to draw or add text to the image.

There are a few different pen options, including highlighter, pen, and marker. The text can be resized and dragged and rotated around the image, but there aren’t any font options. There are nine colors to choose from for the drawing and text. Once done with your editing, simply tap “Done” and “Attach” and it will be added to the message.

The markup tool is available in Messages version 5.9 beta. Sign up for the beta in the Play Store to try it out right now. Features like this are really important if Google wants the Messages app to compete with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Both of those popular services are chock full of features like this. People want to be able to add personality to messages.

OnePlus’ Instant Translation feature shows up in the latest OxygenOS betas for the OnePlus 7/7T

During the launch of the OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus teased an “Instant Translation” feature that will allow users on live video calls to translate speech between one another. Since the initial teaser, we haven’t seen any indication of when the feature would launch to the public, but now there’s strong evidence it could be soon. The latest OxygenOS Open Betas for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series quietly added the Instant Translation app, even though it isn’t mentioned in the official changelog. We’re not sure why it wasn’t mentioned, but here’s your first look at the feature anyways.

Once you install the latest beta build, you can access Instant Translation from Settings > Utilities > OnePlus Laboratory. If you enable the toggle at the top of the Instant Translation settings page, you’ll have access to a Quick Settings tile that toggles the service. In the Settings page, you can also choose which two languages you want to translate between. Currently, you can select English, French, German, Hindi, or Chinese. Lastly, you can also enable a toggle that will cause the service to only translate speech from the other party.

I enabled the Instant Translation service via the Quick Setting tile on my OnePlus 7 Pro and started a Google Duo video call to my OPPO Find X2 Pro, but I did not see any translation subtitles. The introduction to the feature mentions the service works during video calls, but I’m not sure exactly which applications are supported. I did a quick examination of the APK and found that it uses Google Translate to handle translations, but I couldn’t find much else. Given that OnePlus hasn’t made any announcements about the inclusion of this service, though, it’s possible that Instant Translation wasn’t meant to be included in this release. If OnePlus does make an announcement, or if we manage to get this feature working, we’ll update this post.

OnePlus 7/7 Pro get OxygenOS Open Beta 11 while OnePlus 7T gets Open Beta 2

The previous OxygenOS Open Beta builds for the OnePlus 7/7 Pro and OnePlus 7T series were released last week. Today, the company is releasing a new Open Beta update for these devices. Open Beta 11 is rolling out to the OnePlus 7/7 Pro and Open Beta 2 is rolling out for the OnePlus 7T.

The changelogs for both Open Beta builds are the same. OnePlus fixed the frame rate issue with screen recording, optimized adaptive brightness, fixed the issue of the keyboard randomly switching to Gboard, and included the March 2020 security updates. Scrapped Essential Phone 2 and 3 get shown off by a former Essential designer

Essential jumped onto the smartphone scene in 2017 with the Essential Phone PH-1, riding on the reputation of its founder, Andy Rubin, better known for co-founding Android. The company got to release only one smartphone, before it was unceremoniously shut down in February 2020. This came as a surprise to a fair few people, as the company had been exceptional with the software support it afforded to its singular device, with regular monthly security patches and major Android OS updates released right after Google (including Android 11 Developer Preview 1 through a GSI). Now, a former Essential designer has shared images of what would have been the Essential Phone 2 and Essential Phone 3.

Mr. Kevin Hoffman worked with Essential as a lead designer and had the opportunity to guide the company’s product lineup. In a brief post on his website, which has since been locked down, Mr. Hoffman has shared images of the unreleased devices.

Essential Phone 2 / PH-2

The Essential PH-2 would have followed closely along the design cues laid down by the PH-1. We can see the flat rear panel with the dual cameras and the dual magnetic pin attachments and the fingerprint sensor. The visible change is along the metal frame, which is now rounded off a bit. The back glass also appeared to be matte this time around.

“PH2 was a project I overtook as lead designer during a team reorganization. I contributed to early conceptualization, form & detail iteration, creating visual presentations, collaborating with Chinese vendors and meeting for product builds, CMF/PRD documentation for manufacturing, CMF approvals, etc.

This phone had a semi-round side profile for considered ergonomics and “slim border” look, a dual camera system, SUS321 ultra-fine bead blasted frame, 2.5D front cover glass, matte chemical etched back cover glass, IP68 rating, 84% screen to body ratio, and supported the “Essential click connect” system. Among others, all these features combined for a competitive mobile device (at the time).”

Essential Phone 3 / PH-3

The Essential Phone 3 would have been obviously in earlier stages of development than the other phone, but the company was working on it as recently as this year. Mr. Hoffman shared a few different designs, with the basic idea being housing an existing OLED display with defined dimensions and accomodating a triple camera setup on the rear.

“Essential PH3 was a project I led as a designer in an effort to create an inclusive phone with contemporary tech & aesthetic, at a low price point. The design was constrained to low BOM costs using a preexisting OLED display with defined dimensions, bead-blasted machined aluminum, and 2.5D cover glass.

Noteworthy design detailing is expressed in the back triple camera system: A polished stainless steel camera housing holding a flash module and 3 camera lenses. This exaggerated, bold treatment accentuates a high performance camera story in an age where consumers prioritize phones with exceptional cameras. Additionally, chemical etched back cover glass created further contrast with the camera, and the flat side wall treatment paid homage to the original PH1 Essential phone design language.”

Essential GEM

The Essential GEM with its bizarre design was teased by Andy Rubin back in October 2019. Obviously, with Essential shutting down, the GEM will no longer be released in any form. Nonetheless, Mr. Hoffman shared some insight into the product:

“Noteworthy industrial design features include a 3D molded glass unibody (a manufacturing feat that has never been done before with the help of Corning Glass), a MX resistant coating with striking color effects, and a slim form factor & OLED display that refocuses how we interact with mobile devices.”

With Essential now essentially dead, these planned products just provide a window of insight into a future that could have been.
