Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 is now available for the ASUS ROG Phone II

Getting your hands on a shiny new ASUS ROG Phone II might be a difficult task at this moment due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but that didn’t stop the Taiwanese company from releasing the long-anticipated Android 10 update as well as the corresponding kernel source code for this device. Matter of fact, an official bootloader unlock utility for the ROG Phone II does exist, making this beastly phone a feasible choice for tinkering. ASUS went a step further and sent several units of the ROG Phone II to custom ROM and kernel developers, just like they did with the ZenFone 6, i.e. their current mainstream flagship. One of those recipients, XDA Recognized Developer luca020400, has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 for the device.

ASUS ROG Phone II XDA Forums || Buy ASUS ROG Phone II from Flipkart

To try out this build of LineageOS‌ 17.1, all you need is an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery like TWRP installed on your device. While the phone is officially supported by TWRP, you might require an Android 10-compatible unofficial build by the maintainer. Some users are having difficulties to install the current build of LineageOS‌ 17.1 via TWRP, but there is also an alternate way of flashing the package via Fastboot. The developer has also provided a standalone version of the LineageOS recovery image to make things easier.

It is worth mentioning that users don’t have to install a separate Google apps package (commonly referred to as GApps) after installing this particular build, as the developer has decided to ship them inside the same package for the time being. The ROM doesn’t support Air Triggers and the vibrator does not work properly, but fundamental functionalities, including the 120Hz high refresh rate, are working.

XDA Senior Member Freak07, better known as the creator of the Kirisakura custom kernel, has also released a beta build of his kernel for the ROG Phone II running Android 10. If you want to get the most out of the camera, you can check out some Google Camera ports for this phone as well.

ASUS has already done an impressive job by allowing the users of the ROG Phone II to choose between the gaming-inspired ROG UI and the stock-like ZenUI Classic. Now that the aftermarket development work on the phone is gaining momentum, perhaps we might see the official inclusion of this phone within the LineageOS project soon.

Redmi K30 Pro to come with 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, 8K video recording, Dual OIS

The Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro is coming to China on March 24, 2020, and Redmi has already begun its slew of device teasers which detail various aspects of the device in the run up to its launch. The Redmi K30 Pro will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, as well as a single pop-up camera, an improved vibration motor, Game Turbo 3.0 with voice changer, AMOLED display with HDR10+ support, and more. Today, Redmi has revealed the fourth color variant, gray with red power button, as well as dropped a few key details about the camera.

The Redmi K30 Pro is equipped with the 64MP Sony IMX686 camera for its primary setup on the rear. This includes a large 1/1.7″ sensor, 1.6μm after pixel-binning and a 7P lens setup. The sensor will also be capable of 8K video recording (resolution of 7680 × 4320)

The Redmi K30 Pro will also feature dual OIS, which is OIS plus EIS, resulting in steady videos even in sub-optimal situations. The rear camera setup also includes a telephoto sensor capable of 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom.

There a few things which are left unexplored yet. For instance, Redmi has not yet revealed what the other two sensors would be. The front camera is also left unexplored — we just know that it will be a popup camera and have multi-colored LEDs on the side of the popup (unlike the Redmi K20 series which had a single color LED). Redmi has also not clarified the refresh rate of the display, which we continue to presume to be 60Hz only. Battery and fast charging technologies within the phone are also left unexplored, as well as several smaller bits and pieces. We do know that the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack, though. We also do not know what would be the differentiating aspects of the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition against the regular variant. We hope to find all of these soon enough.

[Update: Rollout paused] Hotstar brings Disney+ content to India as “Disney+ Hotstar”

Update 1 (03/20/2020 @ 03:32 AM ET): Hotstar has officially confirmed that the Disney+ Hotstar rollout has been paused. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on March 11, 2020, is preserved below.

Disney is the world’s largest media production house. About a year ago, it announced its entry into the online streaming business with a new cross-platform service to compete with content providers like Hulu and Netflix. Called Disney+, the service went live in November last year, offering exclusive content from Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars as well as The Simpsons franchises under the same roof. While Disney+ is has been restricted to a handful of countries since its launch, Indians can enjoy its exclusive content with homegrown streaming app, Hotstar. The app has now been rebranded as “Disney+ Hotstar” and the content is available to all Premium members without any extra cost.

The online streaming Hotstar is owned by one of India’s largest TV networks – Star India, which was previously owned by 21st Century Fox. When Disney acquired Fox in 2018, all TV channels under the Star TV network as well as Hotstar became to be owned by the former. With the announcement of the new streaming service, it was also confirmed that Hotstar will host the content in India.

Hotstar’s Android app has recently been updated with a new user interface, logo, and splash screen. The update UI also exudes a Disney+ Hotstar branding along with a color scheme in line with Disney+. While Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame have been available on Hotstar since its release on Disney+, new titles are now being added to the app. Gadgets 360 compiled a list of titles now available on the platform and these include:

While Hotstar operates with a freemium model and has three tiers of subscription. Besides the free tier, there’s Hotstar VIP, which mostly has Indian content but without any ads, and Hotstar Premium, which has paid Indian content along with international hits like Game of Thrones. Disney+ content will only be available for Hotstar Premium users and the membership for the same costs ₹199 ($2.70) a month or ₹999 ($13.50) a year.

We can also expect localization of content through audio dubbing in Indian languages as more Disney+ content is made available on the platform. While the majority of Disney’s content is now destined to be available via Hotstar, some short-form content also continues to be available on JioCinema.

Update: Hotstar officially pauses rollout of Disney+ Hotstar

Within 24 hours of the content first being spotted, Hotstar had already pulled back Disney+ content from its app and rolled back to the previous state. Now, the company has officially confirmed that it is pausing the rollout of Disney+ Hotstar.

Mr. Uday Shankar, President at The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman at Star & Disney India, released a statement:

“We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon.”

The rollout has thus been paused indefinitely. The decision to postpone the IPL 2020 season was taken in light of COVID-19, and consequently, the same has now pushed back this launch.

OnePlus experimented with a marble OnePlus 7T, but you can’t buy it

The OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro were launched back in May 2019, and while we are still a month and half away from completing a year from that launch, reports suggest that the government is gearing up for a device announcement on April 15, 2020. While we wait for OnePlus to make an official announcement for the launch date, the company has shared alternative CMF experiments that it did on past smartphones.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau shared on Twitter photographs of OnePlus smartphones that are a tad bit different from the phones that consumers could buy.

Pete Lau captioned the photos:

We do more testing with colors, materials, and finishing (“CMF”) than you could imagine, because that’s what decides the overall feel of a phone. We’ve got more to share soon, but until then, what’s your favorite out of these past devices?

OnePlus CMF Concepts

OnePlus is no stranger to concept phones, as it recently showcased the OnePlus Concept One to enthusiasts around the world. The OnePlus Concept One primarily showed off the invisible camera technology, but it also set the ground for showing off an alternative CMF of leather with faux stitching for the rear panel. But with these CMF experiments, the core idea was to try out different colors, materials, and finishing firsthand on products that are intended to reach the mass market but may not be completely ready just yet.

OnePlus CMF Concepts

In the pictures, we can see a few familiar faces in different avatars. There’s the regular OnePlus 7T, but also one with a marble finish sporting a camera design that was seen in one of the earliest leaks. Next, we see three different OnePlus 6‘s: one with a glossy white-and-cyan gradient, one with a matte white finish (different from the Silk White variant), and one with a denim blue color and rough gradient (but hard to determine from just images if its a wood-like finish). And then there’s the matte white OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, which is the second phone among the six pictured that customers could buy. It does appear that the company used some of the learnings from the white-and-cyan gradient phone to make the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T.

We are close to the OnePlus 8 series launch, and this curious share by Mr. Lau does pique our interest. Will we see any of these CMF alternatives adopted for the upcoming phones? Guess we will have to wait to find out.

Google Messages gets RCS support for everyone in Spain

Google has been taking RCS matters into its own hands as of late. After trying to work with OEMs and carriers to get greater support, Google started pushing RCS on its own last year. The Messages app got RCS support in the UK and France last summer and now Spain is joining the fun.

Everyone in Spain who uses Google’s Messages app should now have RCS. Google reached an agreement with carriers Orange, Másmóvil, Telefónica, and Vodafone to make RCS available to everyone in the country. As with the rollout in previous places, users only have to agree to enable “Chat” features when the pop-up appears.

RCS brings typing indicators, larger group chats, larger file transfers, chat over Wi-Fi, and more. It’s basically a much more modern version of SMS. You can tell if both people in a conversation are using RCS by the “Chat message” text in the edit box.

HMD Global announces the Nokia 8.3 global 5G phone, Nokia 5.3, and the Nokia 1.3 budget phone

The technology world continues to march on and today HMD Global announced a slew of new phones. The headliner is the Nokia 8.3 5G, the company’s first 5G phone. It also announced the Nokia 5.3 and the budget Nokia 1.3 (also the Nokia 5310 feature phone if you’re into that sort of thing). Let’s take a look at these latest Nokia devices.

Nokia 8.3 5G

HMD Global is a little late to the 5G game, but that’s not a bad thing. The company says waiting has allowed it to support a wide range of 5G bands from the start. It’s calling the Nokia 8.3 5G the “first truly global 5G smartphone,” which means it should eventually support 5G roaming across more countries.

5G aside, the other big thing that HMD is touting is the cameras. The Nokia 8.3 5G has four cameras arranged in a circular array centered on the back. The main shooter is 64MP, while the others are a 12MP wide-angle, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor. There is also a 24MP selfie camera on the front in a hole-punch.

HMD talked a lot about the video capabilities of the cameras, especially the wide-angle camera. It can shoot video in 4K and in 21:9 aspect ratio. The Nokia 8.3 5G can shoot video in log format (similar to shooting RAW photos), which is great for people who like to edit videos after the fact.

The Nokia 8.3 5G has a 6.81-inch FHD+ display and they’ve included an Iris display chip from Pixelworks. The “PureDisplay” has always-on HDR, enhanced picture quality, the ability to adjust brightness for ambient light, and “absolute color accuracy.”

Other specifications include the Snapdragon 765G SoC, 6/8GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, and a 4,500mAh battery. It has USB-C for charging, a headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner built into the power button, and NFC. It will ship with Android 10.

Nokia 8.3 5G Specifications

Nokia 5.3

The Nokia 5.3 is a mid-range device and a follow-up to the Nokia 5.1. HMD has bumped it up from a single camera to a whopping four cameras: 13MP, 5MP wide-angle, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor. That’s a lot of cameras for a phone in this category. There is an 8MP camera on the front in a waterdrop notch.

Some of the other specifications found in the Nokia 5.3 include a 6.55-inch HD+ display, Snapdragon 665 SoC, 3/4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. It has USB-C for charging, a headphone jack, rear fingerprint scanner, and NFC. It will ship with Android 10.

Nokia 1.3

Lastly, the company announced the budget-friendly Nokia 1.3. This device has a 5.71-inch display, the Snapdragon 250 SoC, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a removable 3,000mAh battery. As you can tell from the specifications, this is an extremely low-end device. I can’t remember the last time I saw a phone with only 1GB of RAM.

The Nokia 1.3 has a single 8MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera up front. The one interesting thing about this device is the inclusion of Google’s new “Camera Go” app. This means the Nokia 1.3 can take advantage of Google’s photography algorithms and features like Portrait Mode. It applies the depth-of-field effect only using software and suggests ways to clear up space when storage is low.

Other specifications include microUSB for charging, a headphone jack, Google Assistant button, and no NFC. The Nokia 1.3 runs Android 10 Go Edition and HMD Global’s Juho Sarvikas says it will get Android 11 Go and Android 12 Go.

Nokia 1.3 Specifications

  • Single / Dual SIM
  • 8MP rear camera with LED flash
  • 5MP front camera
  • 3.5mm jack, FM Radio, Google Assistant Button
  • Dimensions: 147.3 x 71.2 x 9.35mm; Weight: 155g
  • 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, micro USB
  • 3000mAh removable battery with 5w charging

Pricing & Availability

The Nokia 8.3 5G is expected to go on sale this summer. It will retail for €599 (~ $650) for 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, or €649 (~ $695) for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will be available in “Polar Night” blue/green.

The Nokia 5.3 will be available in April. Pricing will start at €189 (~ $205) for the 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage model. The phone will come in three colors: Charcoal, Cyan, and Sand.

Google Camera Go brings Portrait Mode photography to budget Android Go smartphones

Earlier today, HMD Global announced a trio of new smartphones: the Nokia 8.3, the Nokia 5.3, and Nokia 1.3. While the Nokia 8.3 and Nokia 5.3 run regular Android 10 with a handful of HMD Global’s customizations on top, the Nokia 1.3 runs Android 10 (Go Edition), a special version of Android that’s optimized for budget smartphones with a weaker processor and lower RAM capacity. Although the Nokia 1.3 has the low-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 and only a single 8MP rear camera, the Nokia 1.3 can actually take portrait mode shots. That’s because the Nokia 1.3 has the new Google Camera Go app, a stripped-down version of the Pixel’s camera app for Android Go devices.

Google Camera Go on Nokia 1.3

Google Camera Go on the Nokia 1.3

The typical Android Go device only has a single rear-facing camera, a low-end SoC, and other hardware compromises in order to bring the price down to the sub-$100 mark. Because of these design and hardware choices, Android Go devices are wildly popular in emerging markets around the world; in fact, Google says there are now over 100 million active Android Go devices. However, the camera experience is usually very limited on these budget smartphones because of the low-end SoC and lack of additional cameras. That’s where the Google Camera Go app comes in.

Google is leveraging its machine learning prowess to bring portrait mode photography to the masses with the Camera Go app. The app can apply depth-of-field effects using only software. The app is “deeply integrated” into the OS, meaning it’s “not just photo filtering on top,” according to Arpit Midha, a lead product manager for Android. According to The Verge, Camera Go even tracks device storage to suggest ways to clear up space if the remaining storage space is running low.

Camera Go is currently only available on the newly announced Nokia 1.3, but we can expect it to arrive on future Android Go devices. By enabling portrait mode on Android Go devices with Camera Go, Google is democratizing portrait mode photography.
