Behind the scenes, we saw a larger number of great paid, free, and freemium games than ever before. There were a ton of great releases, but we need to narrow down the best. Here are the best Android games released in 2016!

LG shows off new wireless speakers that you wear around your neck

This post originally appeared on our sister site, Sound Guys.

LG is going to bring a new design idea for wireless speakers to the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. It will show off the LG TONE Studio, a set of speakers that a person actually wears around his or her neck.

See also: The best wireless/Bluetooth headphones for running

The shape of the speakers include two full range units on the top and two vibrating units on the bottom. LG claims that this unique design will give users a "personal surround sound experience", when they watch movies at home, play video games or just sitting back to listen to music. The new TONE Studio also features a Hi-Fi DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) to help recreate the original audio quality of sound tracks. Two LG TONE Studio speakers can also be combined to share the sound from music, movies and more with its Dual Play feature.

LG has also announced the TONE Free wireless earbuds. While they still go inside the ear for listening to music, the product also comes with a neckband that can store those buds when they are not in use. They can also be used to charge the earbuds and they can also vibrate for incoming call or text messages notifications.

LG has not announced a price tag or release date for its new TONE audio products, but hopefully we will learn more next week at CES 2017.

Best of Android 2016 – What is the best smartphone?

What is the best phone? The one that beats all others? The best of the best that money can buy?

If you're a tech aficionado, these are probably questions that you're asked quite often. We know we are. Because we're often asked for advice on what the best phone to buy is, we thought we'd help answer this question for you with the ultimate smartphone comparison.

Welcome to the second annual edition of Best of Android!

What is Best of Android?

With Best of Android 2016, we're trying to give an objective answer to the question "What's the best Android smartphone?"

We'll be looking at several key areas where the best flagship smartphones need to perform, and ranking ten of the finest smartphones in the ultimate shootout. From the quality and clarity of the display and the audio, to the performance, battery, camera, and the overall user experience, we're conducting the ultimate smartphone comparison.

More than ever, 2016 has given us a lot of great Android devices to choose from. While the ten phones on our least are quite different in terms of features or appearance, they all have something in common – each one is pushing the boundaries of good user experience in their own way.

Here are the ten devices that, we think, were the most compelling and representative in 2016:

What we tested

Each phone has a feature that makes it stand out from the rest, but now it's time to find out which is the handset that rules them all. Over the next days, we'll be bringing the ultimate smartphone comparison in a bid to crown the ultimate smartphone.

In Best of Android 2016, we'll be looking at these crucial aspects of user experience:

  • Display
  • Audio
  • Camera
  • Battery life
  • Performance

We've broken down each of these aspects into certain criteria and over the coming days, we'll reveal how each phone performs. The testing was conducted on all of these phones over the past four weeks and although several members of our team were involved, the phones, testing conditions and equipment were the same across all tests.

How we plan to crown the winner

Throughout all the testing, we'll rank each smartphone in order (from 1st to 10th) and we'll be using this rankings to decide the overall winner. For each category, the smartphone coming first gains ten points, second place gets nine points and so on. At the end, we add up all the points and then calculate average scores for each phones across all test. The phone with the highest will be crowned the Phone of the Year 2016!

Over the following days, we'll publish the results of our tests, along with an in-depth explanation of the results and our take on the findings. We're starting with the Display category today, so check back soon. We'll be updating this page every day with each new installment of Best of Android so keep this page in your bookmarks!

Problems with the Huawei Mate 9 and how to fix them

Huawei's Mate series is known for its beautiful designs and construction, fantastic displays, and large batteries, all of which makes for a popular range of smartphones. The latest addition to the series, the Huawei Mate 9, continues to bring all of these signature elements to the table, and more, including an upgraded version of the LEICA dual-camera setup from the P9, and a major overhaul of the software experience. If you are in the market for a large display smartphone, the Huawei Mate 9 is definitely one to consider.

However, as is the case with any current generation smartphone or tablet, the latest high-end offering from Huawei is not without its issues. Which is why, we've rounded up some of the common problems that Huawei Mate 9 owners have faced, and offer potential solutions on how to fix them!

Disclaimer: Not every Huawei Mate 9 will face these issues, and in fact, it is more than likely that you won't come across of these problems at all.

Problem #1 – Issues with using Nova and other third-party launchers

Quite a few users who use third party launchers, and particularly Nova, have found that the device automatically, often after closing an app, reverts to the default stock launcher of EMUI. Users then have to go into the settings and once again set the third party launcher as the default one.

Potential solutions:

  • This seems to have to do with the aggressive RAM management and default battery saving features the tends to kill any apps that are running in the background, including the third party launcher. This is what also causes the notification bug (see below). Until a permanent fix is made available via a software update, there are a few workarounds that can be tried.
  • You can try locking it into the Recent Apps list. Some third party launchers, like Nova, won't show the launcher settings if you are currently using it, so first, set the default launcher to the stock Huawei one. Then open Nova launcher and go to the launcher settings. Press the Recent Apps key and you should see the settings page. Press the small lock icon and lock it in place.
  • Nova launcher also has a setting called "Aggressive Desktop." Enabling this seems to have fixed the issue for some users.

Problem #2 – Performance issues

Some users have reported that the device tends to randomly freeze, and there are quite a few instances of stutter and lag as well.

Potential solutions:

  • Download the Greenify app from the Google Play Store. Here, you can see a list of applications that are active on waking the phone, and you can then change the settings for these apps, which should help with reduce any slowdowns.
  • A rogue app could be the cause for any stutter or lag. Boot the device into Safe Mode (you can find the instructions on how to do so below) and see if the problem persists. If not, an application is the issue. You can then either delete the last few apps you have may have installed before the problem started, or perform a factory reset and start over, even though that is recommended only as a worst-case scenario, since you will lose all your data.

Problem #3 – Battery drain issues

Some users have reported coming across serious battery drain issues, with the device, in some cases, running out of battery in just 6-8 hours, with relatively light usage.

Potential solutions:

  • Keep a track of the battery stats to see if an app is causing the surprising battery drain, and more often than not, that is going to be the case. Then, the only option is uninstall the app or to wait for an update. A good alternative will also likely be available on the Google Play Store which you can use instead. In the case of the Huawei Mate 9, users have found that the battery drain seems to be caused by the Exchange email app, and in some cases, by Google Calendar sync issues.

Problem #4 – Connectivity issues

As is the case with any new device, you may find yourself facing some connectivity issues with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Apart from that, users have also come across problems with connecting to Protected Wi-Fi.

Potential solutions:

Cannot connect to Protected Wi-Fi

  • While the Mate 9 can connect to regular Wi-Fi routers, it seems to have difficulty connecting to those with 802.11 EAP enabled routers. The "Connect" or "Save" button remains greyed out depsite adding the correct user name and passord. The fix for this problem is very simple. All you have to do is change the CA Certificate setting from "Unspecified" to "Do not validate."

General Wi-Fi issues

  • Turn the device and the router off for at least ten seconds, then turn them back and retry the connection.
  • Go to Settings – Power saving and ensure that this option is turned off.
  • Use the Wi-Fi Analyzer to check how crowded your channel is, and switch to a better option.
  • Forget the Wi-Fi connection by going to Settings – Wi-Fi and long tapping the connection you want, then selecting "Forget". Re-enter the details and try again.
  • Make sure the router firmware is up to date.
  • Make sure the applications and software on the device are up to date.
  • Go into Wi-Fi – Settings – Advanced and make a note of your device MAC address, then make sure that it is allowed access in the router's MAC filter.

General Bluetooth issues

  • With issues when connecting to the car, check the manufacturer's manual for the device and the car and reset your connections.
  • Ensure that you are not missing a vital part of the connection process.
  • Go to Settings – Bluetooth and ensure nothing needs changing
  • Go into Settings – Bluetooth delete all prior pairings and try setting them up again from scratch.
  • When it comes to issues with multiple device connection, only a future update will be able to address this problem.

Problem #5 – Issues where the only option is to wait for a software update

There are some issues that users have come across that unfortunately don't have any easy fixes or workarounds. In these cases, the only option is to wait for an official software update. Some of these issues are listed below.

  • No audio controls on lockscreen: Some users have found that there are no audio controls on the lockscreen when listening to music, which means that the phone has to be unlocked each time. This seems particularly prevalent with the Spotify app, but some users have faced this issue with other music players and streamers as well.
  • Touch sensitivity: Some users have found that the touch sensitivity isn't as good as expected, particularly along the left and right sides of the display. An update to fix this problem is rolling out now, and you should receive it shortly.
  • Notification bug: The aggressive RAM management and battery optimizations that cause the issue with third party launchers (mentioned above) also results in notifications not coming through. An update to fix this problem is rolling out now, and you should receive it shortly.

Guides: Hard reset, Safe Mode, wipe cache partition

Hard Reset

  • Method #1 – Turn off the device. Then, press and hold the power button and volume down key simultaneously. Release the buttons as soon as the Huawei logo appears. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, go to "wipe data/factory reset" and confirm with the power key.
  • Method #2 – When the device is on, go to the Settings menu. Scroll down to Advanced Settings, then select Backup & Reset. Tap of Factory Data Reset and accept it.
  • Method #3 – When the phone is on, open the phone dialer. Dial *#*#2846579#*#* and from the menu, select "Reset Factory."

Boot into Safe Mode

  • Turn off the device, and then press and hold the power button to restart it.
  • As soon as the Huawei logo appears, release the power button and immediately press and hold the volume down key.
  • Keep holding the volume down button until the device finishes rebooting, and release it when you see "Safe Mode" in the lower left corner of the screen.
  • Restart the device to exit Safe Mode.

Wipe cache partition

  • Turn off the device. Then, press and hold the power button and volume down key simultaneously. Release the buttons as soon as the Huawei logo appears. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu, go to "wipe cache partition" and confirm with the power key.

So, there you have it for this roundup of some common problems faced by Huawei Mate 9 owners, and offer potential solutions on how to fix them! However, don't let these small list of issues deter you from picking up what is otherwise still a fantastic flagship, with a great camera, gorgeous display, great battery life, and more.

2016 in review: 10 defining moments in the world of Android

2016 will surely be entered in the annuls of history as annus horribilis. But for the Android world at least, the tragic lows have been counterbalanced by equally euphoric highs. From the emergence of the outstandingly good Pixel phones at the expense of the Nexus program to the all-too-brief reign of the Galaxy Note 7, the year has been bittersweet. In what can only be described as one of the most tumultuous years for Android on record, here are ten defining moments of 2016.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall

Easily the biggest Android event of 2016, the global sales halt and subsequent total recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was the Android story of the year. It had everything: the world's largest manufacturer of smartphones, explosions, mystery and arguably the best Android phone ever to have graced our pockets. As unfortunate as it was unprecedented, the Galaxy Note 7 recall will remain a black spot on 2016 not only for Samsung but for Android in general.

Google gets in the hardware game and Nexus dies

If you had asked most Android fans a year ago (at peak Nexus 6P popularity) if they'd want to drop the Nexus program in favor of Google-built hardware, you'd probably have been lucky to get more than one hand in ten raised. But Google clearly thought it was a good move and graced us with the Pixel phones this year, sadly at the expense of the Nexus program. Nexus fans are justifiably miffed, but there's no denying the Pixel has proven it was a risky bet that has already paid off in spades.

CyanogenMod breathed its last

Almost as long as there has been Android there has been CyanogenMod, with the custom ROM even pre-dating the Nexus program. But Steve Kondik took some risks that unfortunately didn't pay off as well as Google's Pixel punt. Arguably getting mixed up with folks he would have been better off avoiding, the fate of the various Cyanogen properties has looked grim for a while now. The recent announcement that Cyanogen Inc. will shut its doors by December 31 demolished the infrastructure of CM with it, marking the end of an era. Thankfully the soul of CM will live on as Lineage OS.

"Cheap" phones got redefined, again

The definition of a "cheap" Android phone has been steadily rewritten in recent years, perhaps starting with the game-changing Moto G. That same impulse – offering rock solid performance at a rock bottom price – has officially reached the mid-range too, with more and more "high-end" phones priced like mid-rangers. Despite diminutive price tags, these phones deliver similar specs and performance as their more expensive competition. The honor 8, OnePlus 3 and ZTE Axon 7 are obvious examples in 2016, a year when an awesome phone no longer had to be an expensive phone.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix shows OEMs what users want

Xiaomi has never really been known for its original smartphone design, fitting comfortably into that dated Chinese approach of cloning popular device designs. But all that changed with the Mi Mix, a concept phone that took everyone by surprise, not least because it miraculously avoided being leaked in advance of its announcement. A phone this cool, this futuristic, has been on every Android fans mind for years, and while we've seen similar phones before, the Mi Mix will be remembered as the phone that ushered in the era of the bezel-less smartphone.

Pokemon Go takes the world by storm

To say Pokemon Go has had a troubled childhood would be an understatement. If it were a teen idol it would've been in rehab twice by now. But despite a painfully slow global rollout, launching in a bizarre half-finished state with nowhere near enough server infrastructure, requiring a permanent connection to a battery pack and offending its most dedicated fans at almost every turn, Pokemon Go was the game of 2016. Augmented reality has been around for years, but it wasn't until Pokemon Go that regular folks fully understood what it was. That, and it made $600 million in a couple of months.

Nokia sells its brand to HMD Global

Nokia finally gave up the hardware ghost after a misguided OS bet on Windows Phone that resulted in Microsoft selling off the company for spare parts in early 2016. Fortunately, the branding rights to the Nokia name went to a newly-formed company called HMD Global Oy, a hastily constructed mishmash of Nokia veterans committed to keeping the flame alive. With tons of experience and a deep-seated love for the Nokia of old under their belts, HMD is promising new Nokia-branded devices in 2017. They'll be running Android and will have the whole world watching when they are eventually unveiled at MWC 2017.

BlackBerry sells its brand to TCL

With the Priv, BlackBerry presented itself as a potential Android manufacturer to pay attention to. But the Priv didn't quite fly and the next couple of Android-based follow ups were equally overpriced. With one last BlackBerry-built device planned for 2016, the company has now sold its naming rights to TCL Communications, meaning come 2017 there will be no more BlackBerry-designed devices from the iconic Canadian company. BlackBerry will now focus on software, security and enterprise and TCL will take a punt at getting BlackBerry-branded hardware up and running on Android.

OnePlus returns to form, twice

When OnePlus' follow up to the breakout OnePlus One failed to even outdo 2015 flagships, it looked like the company's "flagship killer" promise might have been misguided. But with lesson in humility learned, OnePlus returned with a vengeance in 2016, delivering outstanding phones in both the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. OnePlus offended a lot of its core fans by releasing an updated device just a few months after the first, but OnePlus has practically turned stepping on toes into an art form. And when the results are as good as the OnePlus 3T, a few bruised toes are a small price to pay.

Project Ara dies and modules face an uncertain future

For a while it looked like 2016 might be the year of the module. With Project Ara on the horizon, the LG G5's modular slot design and the Moto Z's magnetic version, modules had officially arrived. But then no one bought the G5 or its Friends, Project Ara got scrapped entirely and Moto Mods found themselves the only residents left in an overpriced graveyard populated by ghosts. Lenovo may now be the best company doing modules, but it might also be the only company doing them next year.

Bonus mention: Android apps on Chrome OS

This may not have registered too highly on most folks' radar this year, but bringing the million-plus Android apps to Chrome OS devices suddenly made Chromebooks even more compelling. Already massively popular for offering great performance at an almost laughably low price, Chromebooks have already become the default option for education and business, with Chromebooks outselling Macs for the first time in 2016. With Google Play's massive app library now available, Chrome OS and Chromebooks are only going to get bigger.

Wrap up

2016 was a year of game-changing events: from the end of CyanogenMod, Nexus and Project Ara to imminent rebirths for BlackBerry, Nokia and Lineage OS. Affordable phones held their own against expensive rivals better than they ever have before and finally all major flagships raised the bar on camera performance. Google Now/Now on Tap essentially got supplanted by Google Assistant, AR and AI was everywhere and tablets and smartwatches were nowhere.

Qualcomm became reliable again, Alphabet was briefly the most valuable company in the world and Samsung's crown prince finally ascended to the board of directors before losing face in the wake of the South Korean presidential impeachment scandal. Nougat arrived, the Note 7 departed and we all looked like idiots in VR headsets (when we weren't busy talking to our speakers that is).

HTC, Sony and Moto largely dropped off the radar, only to be replaced by Pixel, Huawei and Xiaomi. Headphone ports became an endangered species, smartwatches saw signs of life with Google promising new Android Wear 2.0 watches in early 2017 and everyone and their dog ran beta previews for Android 7.0. It was a wild rollercoaster of a year, no doubt, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

What did we miss and what are you predicting for 2017?
