Coolpad Cool1 with dual-camera setup launched in India

Back in August, LeEco and Coolpad have joined forces and announced the affordable Cool1 smartphone. We are now happy to report that the device will soon be available on the Indian market.

The Coolpad Cool1 will come in two different variants. You'll be able to get your hands on a model with either 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM. Both devices will, however, have 32 GB of storage. The interesting part is that they will share the same price tag — Rs. 13,999. But you'll only be able to order the 4 GB model online from Amazon India, while the 3 GB version of the device will only be available in brick-and-mortar stores.

Online sales start on January 5, while the offline availability hasn't been announced yet. The devices will come in Silver or Gold.

The Cool1 features a 5.5-inch 1080p display and is powered by the Snapdragon 652 processor. Its biggest selling point is probably the 13 MP dual camera setup on the back that utilizes a monochrome and color sensor. The device is quite easy on the eyes and sports a magnesium alloy metal body. It also has a fingerprint scanner on the back, a 4,060 mAh battery, an 8 MP selfie snapper, and ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on board.

What do you think about the Coolpad Cool1 smartphone? Would you consider buying it? Let us know.

LG G6: all the rumors in one place

There are a bunch of smartphones we're looking forward to seeing in 2017. One of them is the upcoming LG G6, which is expected to bring another reboot for the series. But how exactly will the LG G6 look, what will it offer specs-wise, when will it be released, and how much will it retail for? If you're interested in getting answers to these questions, read on.

We have rounded up the all the latest reports regarding the LG G6 release date, price, specs and features. But do keep in mind that most of these reports are just rumors, so take them with a grain of salt. Just as most manufacturers these days, LG doesn't reveal much regarding its flagship phones prior to the official release. We can however, offer some educated guesses.

LG G6: release date

Last year, LG announced its flagship device — the G5 — in late February, during Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The device went on sale in early April, more than a month after it was officially unveiled.

According to the latest reports, LG has a different strategy set up for the G6. The company will probably still announce the device during MWC but will start selling it a full month earlier than its predecessor. This means that the G6 just might hit markets across the globe around late February or early March.

LG has a good reason for speeding things up. The company wants to get its flagship device on the market before everyone else. Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 series of smartphones a bit later than usual next year — in April — which means less competition for the G6 from the start.

The strategy just might work for LG, but on the other hand, people who are really interested in getting a flagship from Samsung or even HTC, which is expected to release the HTC 11 around the same time, probably won't mind waiting for an additional month or two to get it.

LG G6: specs

Let's start with the display. According to some rumors, the G6 will swap the LCD screen found on its predecessor for an OLED display. Its size just might stay the same at 5.3-inches, but as always, there is a chance that LG will go bigger.

But even if it does, the difference in size probably won't be very big. We think that there's really no reason for LG to increase the display size by much as that would push the smartphone into the phablet territory. If consumers want a bigger phone from LG, they can already opt for the V20.

When it comes to the resolution, the G6 will most likely retain the Quad HD resolution but some rumors do suggest that the device might come with a 4K display. Although it looks nicer, a 4K display does take its toll on the battery life, which is an important factor for consumers when buying a new smartphone.

Under the hood, we expect to see the Snapdragon 835 processor, along with at least 6 GB of RAM. This will probably be the norm for most flagship smartphones in 2017.  While the G5 comes with 32 GB of storage, the G6 is expected to offer double that. So that's 64 GB of space for your apps, videos, pictures, and other data. If that's not enough for you, don't worry. The device will most likely retain the microSD slot meaning that you'll be able to expand the storage.

As of now, there aren't many rumors regarding the primary camera. LG G6 is expected to feature a dual camera setup just as its predecessor. The cameras might have more megapixels and come with a larger aperture, which will hopefully make a difference in low light performance.

The front-facing camera is also expected to come with a few nifty tricks. Back in October, LG announced an all-in-one iris scanning module and the G6 might be the first to sport it. The module doubles as both an iris scanner and a front-facing camera and uses a filter changing mechanism to switch between the two functions.

We also expect that the LG G6 will come with a bigger battery, which won't be removable, a waterproof body, wireless charging, and the latest version of Android with LG's user interface on top.

LG G6: design

In terms of design, the G5 wasn't that well received among consumers, as its aluminum body didn't really feel that good in the hand. That's why the rumors suggest that LG will step up its game, meaning that the G6 will receive a complete makeover.

According to some reports, LG's upcoming flagship just might sport a tempered glass back, which will give it a completely different look. Is opting for glass instead of metal a good or a bad thing? Well, design is a very subjective matter, and as always, some people will hate it while others will love it. So you're going to have to answer that question yourself.

We think that a glass body can look just as premium as a metal one. Just look at the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. But nevertheless, a glass body does have its drawbacks. It's a fingerprint magnet and is not quite as durable as metal.

You're probably also wondering if the G6 will have a modular design like the G5, right? Well, judging by the rumors, this could go either way. Some claim that the G6 will not be modular and will, therefore, say goodbye to the "Friends" accessories. This would make sense as the modular design found on the G5 really didn't boost its sales and was for the most part not well received by consumers.

But then again LG suggested it might try its luck with the modular design one more time. This would make some business sense as the company would be able to increase its revenues by selling expansion modules for the device to consumers.

LG G6: mobile payment service – LG Pay

Mobile payments are becoming more and more popular. There are already a bunch of them available including Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and Apple Pay. It looks like LG will soon join the fray, as the upcoming G6 will reportedly come with the company's new mobile payment service called LG Pay.

The service will use both NFC as well as Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST), which supports older magnetic credit card machines. And, as most card readers are compatible with MST, you'll be able to use the service in most shops, restaurants, and bars.

Keep in mind that the service will probably not launch globally. Launching a mobile payment service in a certain country is no easy task. LG has to get the banks on board which can obviously take quite some time.

LG G6: price

Flagship devices are expensive, and the LG G6 will be no exception. We assume that it will be available at the same price point as its predecessor, which launched in the US for around $650. Over on the Old Continent, the price of the device at launch varied quite a bit among different countries. But in most cases, the LG G5 was more expensive in Europe than in the US, mainly because of higher taxes.

We expect that the LG G6 will be sold at the same price point as the G5 in European countries, but the UK might be an exception. Because of the Brexit and a weaker pound, LG might make up for its losses by increasing the price in the UK. We hope that this won't happen, but it is possible.

This is all the information we have heard so far regarding the upcoming LG G6's specifications, design and release date. Once we hear more, we'll let you guys know by updating this post.

Meanwhile, feel free to tell us your thoughts on the upcoming LG G6. How do you think it will stack up against other flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8? Let us know by posting a comment down below.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 will ‘come into focus’ at CES 2017

Qualcomm looks like it will reveal more info on its upcoming Snapdragon 835 processor next week at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. A newly posted teaser claims that the 835 will "come into focus" at the event.

Beyond phones: Why Qualcomm is betting big on machine learning, VR and 5G

November 24, 2016

The company previously revealed that the Snapdragon 835 would be made with Samsung's 10-nanometer FinFET process. It will also support the company's Quick Charge 4 technology, which is designed to charge the battery of a smartphone with five hours of life with just five minutes of charging time.

So far, Qualcomm has not revealed much in the way of hardware specifics for the Snapdragon 835, such as clock speed and graphics performance. A recent benchmarking result on the GFXBench site for an alleged 835 development board claims the chip has an octa-core design with a clock speed of 2.2GHz and that its Adreno 540 GPU is 30 percent faster than the current Adreno 530 chip. However, online benchmarking results can be faked, and a development board's results might also differ from the final product.

Unconfirmed rumors claim the first phone with the 835 will be none other than the Samsung Galaxy S8, which may be revealed sometime in April.

Samsung’s experimental smart skincare products will be shown off at CES 2017

Samsung will be showing off a number of experimental electronic devices next week at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. One of them is called Lumini, a skin care scanner device that links with a smartphone app.

The company says that Lumini can take a picture of a person's face, which then analyzes the skin with its own program. That info is sent to a smartphone app, which can inform the owner of any skin problems and how to solve them. The app can even let people chat remotely with a dermatologist or a skincare specialist for even more ways to fix any problems, along with recommendations on any skin care products or makeup tips.

Lumini is part of Samsung's C-Lab division that was formed in 2012 with the goal of fostering more innovative technology ideas. Aside from Lumini, the company will also show two more C-Lab projects at CES 2017. One is called Tag+, a kid-friendly connected button that can connect to toys or a smartphone app. The button can launch different features within a toy or app depending on how it is pressed and used.

The other C-Lab project is yet another skin care product, S-Skin. One part of the product is a microneedle patch designed to enter the skin to deliver effective ingredients and enhance absorption. The other part is a portable device created to measure the hydration, redness, and melanin of the skin while using LED lights to take care of a person's skin.

Google Play Store lists a couple of games with the price of just $0.01

The Google Play Store frequently has discounts on many games and apps, but for the first time a couple of Android games in the store are currently being sold for the price of just $0.01. Yep, that just one US penny.

The two games in question are Lost Journey, a space-based puzzle adventure game from publisher DreamSky, and the oddly named Armpit Hero: VIP, an action-RPG from publisher Candy Soft. Both are participating in the the Google Play Store's Year End Deals sales discount event.

A paid game has never been sold on the Google Play Store for the price of just a penny, but for the moment, that is the only price you will pay for these games. It's highly likely that the low, low price tag may have been put in place in error. The Lost Journey listing says its normal $0.99 price has been reduced down by 90 percent as a result of that sale, but some simple math shows that should not equal a price cut down to a penny.

Still, if you want to get two games that are priced at next to nothing, you might want to just check out these listing below before the prices change again.

Google to roll out January’s Android security update next week

Google may be getting ready to release the latest Android security update next week, but slightly later than usual. Support pages on Verizon Wireless for its Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones show that the upcoming patch could go live for those devices on Tuesday, January 3.

The support pages show that the build number for the new security patch will be NMF26U. Normally, these kinds of updates begin to roll out on the first Monday of each month, which in January's case is on January 2. However, due to the officially observed holiday of New Year's Day, that may explain why the Verizon support pages show the update is being pushed back to Tuesday, January 3.

In any case, this new over-the-air update is likely to be a small one for the Pixel and Pixel XL compared to the updates they received in December, which also included the new Android 7.1.1 Nougat version. The security updates will likely roll out to a larger number of Android smartphones throughout the month of January.

Are you happy with the pace of security update for Android, or should they be launched more often or less often? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Nexus 6 will get Android 7.1.1 Nougat update in early January

If you happen to be a Nexus 6 owner and have been waiting patiently for your Android 7.1.1 Nougat update, we've got some good news for you. A statement from Google confirms the over-the-air update will be provided to the Nexus 6 with the latest Nougat version sometime in early January 2017.

Android Nougat update: when will you get it?

According to a new report, Google said the delay for the Android 7.1.1. Nougat update for the Nexus 6 was due to "a last minute bug that was specific" to that particular device. There's no word on what kind of bug was causing the delay but the company added that issue has since been fixed, so the OTA update will commence very soon. It's likely that the update isn't being pushed out now due to the current holiday time period.

Since the Nexus 6 was first launched in November 2014, it's also likely that the Android 7.1.1. Nougat update could be the last major one for the smartphone, aside from monthly security patches. Even with its slower rollout, the Nexus 6 will still be one of the few smartphones that are currently active with any form of Nougat at all, much less one with the latest version.

We're still not sure of an exact date that the Nexus 6 will get its update, but we'll be sure to keep you informed.
