Facebook introduces new camera for Messenger, adds festive effects

Facebook has updated its Messenger app with a new camera and some Christmas-themed effects. The upgraded camera is "faster, simpler and more fun," than previously, says Facebook, in order to meet increasingly visual messaging needs.

The camera button itself now appears at the bottom-center of the app and is available once Messenger is opened, rather than only in the conversation window.

The new features include AR effects, or "3D masks", which overlay animated content onto videos, as well as "thousands of stickers, frames," and other effects.

"Over 2.5 billion emojis, photos, stickers and videos are sent every day on Messenger," said Facebook, in its announcement. "In some ways the camera is now replacing the keyboard."

Facebook announced the update yesterday, so it should be hitting devices soon. Download Facebook Messenger from Google Play at the link.

Recent updates

Messenger games

November 29, Facebook has rolled out an update which allows users to play classic and current games via Messenger. Tapping the new game controller icon in the app, found below the text box, will bring up a list of the free games for you to play. There are 17 games available currently, from classics like Pac-Man, Galaga and Space Invaders to more recent releases such as Words with Friends: Frenzy.

Android Auto notifications

November 15, Facebook has announced that it has integrated Android Auto support into its Messenger app. While driving an Android Auto-supported vehicle, Messenger will display new message notifications on the screen and users play the message out loud by tapping the speaker icon. There are also two options for responding: one is to press a button that will send a message such as "I'm driving right now; contact me later".  The other is to speak the message they want to send, which will then be transcribed and sent to the recipient as a text.

Deal: $200 off HTC 10 and a free pair of Jabra wireless headphones (US)

We are heading into the holiday season, and HTC certainly is feeling it: the troubled Taiwanese company is offering $200 off its flagship phone in the US and is giving out free Jabra wireless headphones along with it. Hurry though, the offer expires on the 20th of December!

HTC 10 review!

April 14, 2016

HTC loves to give us deals; after all, even though the company saw some moderate success with the Google Pixel phones, its own lineup has been lagging behind considerably these past few years. These deals not only help increase sales but also promote its brand image.

If you're an HTC fan, this may just be the best thing to ever happen this holiday season. HTC is slashing $200 from the original price tag of HTC 10 down to $499. The discount applies to any carrier version (or carrier unlocked) as well as any colour option. That is, you get to choose from Camellia Red, Topaz Gold, Carbon Grey, and Glacier Silver.

The discount applies to any carrier version (or carrier unlocked) as well as any colour option. That is, you get to choose from Camellia Red, Topaz Gold, Carbon Grey, and Glacier Silver.

Just as a quick refresher, the HTC 10 has a 5.2-inch Quad HD screen with a 12-megapixel low-light rear camera. On front is an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with OIS, so you don't have to worry so much about shaky, blurry selfies especially in low light conditions. The phone is powered by Snapdragon 820 and should last you a full day with its 3,000 mAh battery.

The $200 discount runs through the 20th of December, but HTC says the Jabra Move wireless headphones offer is valid while supplies last – so if you're looking to save some money and get a decent pair of Bluetooth headphones (which usually go for $60), then you might want to hurry! Again, the offer limited to the US, and you can find more information on HTC's official website.

Will you be getting the HTC 10? Or is your heart set on another device this holiday season? Let us know by leaving a comment down below!

At first glance, many of the specs here are pretty standard fare, with the Honor Magic sharing the same Kirin 950 as found in the Honor 8. However, things really get interesting when you look at some of the unique extras onboard.

Honor Magic standout features

With the core specs out of the way, we can get to the good stuff. The Honor Magic is supposed to have several interesting additions, many of which are supposed to showcase AI driven features. One of these standout features is the WiseScreen sensor, which combines a sensor in its frame and an infrared sensor in the front-facing camera. What exactly does this do? When the owner of the Honor Magic picks up the phone, the frame sensor and the camera are supposed to recognize the owner's hand and eyes, which then turns on the screen. When the phone is put down by the owner, or put away in a pocket, the screen is supposed to turn off in one second.

Another new feature is called FaceCode Intelligent Recognition. Any message notifications on the phone will only reveal themselves for pre-registered faces. That means you shouldn't have to worry about anyone picking up the phone and seeing messages that they are not suppose to see.

AI-driven features will be offered as part of the phone, via Honor Magic Live. The company released some examples of how this AI technology will work with the phone:

  • Imagine when you are chatting about movies with your friends on Wechat, Honor Magic will then be able to recommend the latest blockbusters for you.
  • Imagine when you are on the road, Honor Magic automatically recognizes that you are driving and will prompt a reminder for you to switch the device to driving mode.
  • DeepThink – Press and hold the home button and Honor Magic will offer multi-facet information based on the current webpage you visit.
  • Once you use Honor Magic to order a cab, the driver's license plate information will be shown on the display under locked screen mode.
  • Once you arrive at the theatre, Honor Magic will automatically display the ticket booking number.
  • When you approach the parcel collection counter, Honor Magic will automatically display the tracking number.

The Honor Magic is also supposed to activate certain features as needed. For example, when you enter a dark room at night, the phone's auto lock screen will launch the flashlight feature to brighten things up. Finally, the phone is supposed to have what's being called a My Pocket feature, which will allow owners to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to activate the save and share button. This will allow them to access articles, videos and music and share them with others.

Honor Magic design

While the phone's special AI features and sensors are obviously the showcase features here, it's also worth talking about the phone's design. For starters, the Honor Magic has a 5.06-inch 2K AMOLED screen with a curved design. The double 3D glass covers are supposed to reflect bright, shining lights. The phone's home button has been designed to also replace the standard "back" and "overview" smartphone buttons. Users will be able to touch, double tap or swipe on the same home key for all those functions. This is supposed to make the phone's overall screen bigger than normal. The home button also has a fingerprint sensor.

The phone's battery is supposed to be made of a "special graphite molecular structure". Combined with a new charging circuit design, the Honor Magic is only supposed to take 10 minutes to get up to 40 percent of its battery charge, and 20 minutes to charge up to 70 percent of its battery charge. Finally, the phone has a 12MP dual lens rear camera.  One of its lenses is supposed to take black and white image while the other lens takes color photos. This is supposed to offer more detail and more colorful photos compared to the normal smartphone camera set up.

Wrap up

Huawei clearly wants the Honor brand to be a leader in offering innovative smartphone design and features. On paper, the Honor Magic seems to fulfill that goal, but it's too bad that it will only be available in China. We look forward to seeing some or all of these features making their way to more widely available phones from the company in the future.

Europe’s Galileo navigation satellite system goes live with phone support

After years and years of waiting, Europe's long awaited Galileo navigation satellite system went live earlier this week. The system currently has 18 satellites in orbit, with more to be added over the next few years. Smartphones with Qualcomm's 400, 600 and 800 series processors are either able to access the Galileo system now, or can be updated with new firmware to add that support.

Users who can access the free navigation service from the Galileo satellites will be able to determine a specific position by a metre (3.3 feet). An upcoming paid service will offer even more accurate positional info, down to just centimetres.

The system currently works with the Huawei Mate 9, the Mate 9 Pro and the Mate 9 Porsche Edition, along with the BQ Aquaris X5 Plus. According to a post on Reddit, the following phones should be able to support the Galileo system, again with a firmware update:

  • ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe
  • ASUS ZenFone 3 Ultra
  • ASUS ZenPad Z8
  • ASUS ZenFone 3
  • HTC HTC 10
  • HTC HTC One A9
  • Kyocera DuraForce PRO
  • Lenovo PHAB2 Pro
  • LG V20
  • LG G5
  • Motorola Moto Z Force Droid
  • Motorola Moto Z Droid
  • Motorola Moto G Plus (4th Gen)
  • Motorola Moto G (4th Gen)
  • OnePlus 3
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 (US only)
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (US only)
  • Sony Xperia X Performance
  • Sony Xperia X
  • ZTE Axon 7

So far, there's no word on when or if these Galileo satellite system updates for these phones will be released.

TCL Communication to design and manufacture BlackBerry smartphones

TCL Communication may sound unfamiliar, but in fact, you've seen their designs before: the DTEK50 and DTEK60 were both designed and developed by the Chinese company.

BlackBerry DTEK50 and DTEK60 head to India

November 8, 2016

Essentially, the announcement of this long-term licensing agreement between the two companies is an extension of their already-existing partnership. It builds upon their work together on the two obscurely-named BlackBerry handsets we saw in the past: the DTEK50 and DTEK60.

From now on, BlackBerry will – as announced before – focus on software development and its service suite, and TCL Communication will design, manufacture, sell and provide support for all BlackBerry-branded devices:

BlackBerry will continue to control and develop its security and software solutions, serve its customers and maintain trusted BlackBerry security software, while TCL Communication will manage all sales and distribution and serve as a global distributor of new BlackBerry-branded mobile devices along with dedicated sales teams.

It seems like at least for the foreseeable future, TCL Communication will be the sole and exclusive hardware partner for the troubled Canadian company. TCL Communication is a subsidiary of TCL Corporation, a multinational Chinese electronics company, and is the fourth largest handset manufacturer in North America and top-10 globally according to IDC.

As Ralph Pini, Chief Operating Officer at BlackBerry, explains, this long-term agreement might benefit BlackBerry since it doesn't need to waste its resources on the hardware side of things but instead can focus on its forte: software and security. Pini claims that the agreement with TCL Communication "represents a key step in our strategy to focus on putting the 'smart in the phone' by providing state-of-the-art security and device software on a platform that mobile users prefer and are comfortable with."

This long-term agreement might benefit BlackBerry since it doesn't need to waste its resources on the hardware side of things but instead can focus on its forte: software and security.

He further adds that given the success the company saw with TCL-designed DTEK smartphones and TCL Communication's vast global reach and consumer access, and given BlackBerry's "unparalleled expertise in mobile security and software," he is "confident that BlackBerry-branded products developed and distributed by TCL Communication will address the needs of BlackBerry users and expand the availability of BlackBerry Secure products throughout the world."

How important is mobile security to you? Is BlackBerry the only way or do you use other services like Samsung's KNOX? Let us know by leaving a comment down below!

Deal: Snag the Moto 360 Sport for just $100 at B&H Photo

Good news – Motorola's Moto 360 Sport smartwatch is now extremely affordable.  Both the white and "flame" (orange) versions of the Android Wear-based device, which launched a year ago for the price of nearly $300, are now on sale at B&H Photo for just $99.99. That's a big $100 savings from its previous normal price tag, as listed on Motorola's own site

The Moto 360 Sport, as the name implies, is marketed to the fitness and athlete audience. It includes a optical heart rate monitor, a GPS, a AnyLight display so you can see what's on the phone in broad daylight, and of course IP67 certification for dust and water resistance, to make sure it doesn't stop working when you sweat.

Again, this sale is just for the white and flame versions; the discount apparently does not apply to the black version of the Moto 360 Sport at B&H Photo. The site adds that there are only a limited number of each watch model available to purchase, so you might want to act quickly if you want to pick one up for yourself, or perhaps for someone else as a holiday gift.

Google previews three upcoming Android Wear 2.0 standalone apps

The biggest single new addition for Google's Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch OS is the ability for apps to be installed and used without a link to a smartphone. Today, the company revealed three such standalone apps that are in the works for Android Wear 2.0.

Here are the three things Android Wear needs to succeed

One of the apps is for the video messaging service Glide. Users will be able to broadcast live from their Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch, and they can go into a conversation just by tapping their contact shortcuts from the watch face. Yes, that means Dick Tracy's wrist phone is going to become a reality.

Another app in the works is for Foursquare. The developers of the app claim that it will offer faster search and better overall performance so that users can spend less time looking at their smartwatch and more time checking out the best places to eat, drink or be entertained.

Finally, the food and health service Lifesum is working on an Android Wear 2.0 app that will give users a quick way to track their water use and their daily meals, again without having to access its smartphone app.

Google released the fourth developer preview version of Android Wear 2.0 earlier this week, and the company indicated there will be at least one more preview build before the final public version is released sometime in early 2017.
