Twitter update adds live video integration from Periscope

The latest Twitter update has officially added live broadcasting functionality into the Twitter app itself. According to a blog post announcing the addition, "starting today, you can create and tweet live video from the Twitter app, powered by Periscope". The live video feature is available in the Twitter update to version 6.26.0, available now in Google Play.

All you need to do is hit the Compose tweet button, then tap the camera icon. At the top of your gallery you'll see a new icon for Live. Tapping that will bring up the pre-broadcast screen, where you can frame up your shot, compose your tweet and then hit Go Live to start broadcasting.

If you are prompted to install Periscope after tapping the Live icon in your gallery, this is just a temporary fix while Twitter rolls out the integrated live video feature.

Do note that your live tweet is visible to anyone on Twitter or Periscope though: not just your followers. You will have the opportunity to create a group for your live video in the pre-broadcast screen though. Just tap the drop down at the top where it says Public. When you're watching a live video on Twitter you'll be able to heart it and comment by tapping the screen.

Twitter live video is a pretty bold move for the company that throws down the gauntlet to the likes of Facebook Live, Snapchat and Instagram Live Stories. But whether adding live video last out of the major social platforms will be enough to get everyone on board remains to be seen. Perhaps this is why Twitter was so happy to kill off Vine recently?

Comment ranking system

November 29: Twitter updated its app to implement a new comment ranking system, replacing the chronological approach with the comments Twitter thinks you'll want to see first based on a new popularity algorithm. While seeing comments from your friends and followers first makes sense, there is no way to go back to the old system. The asme update also added a Direct Reply counter on tweets.

QR codes

November 17: Twitter made getting new followers and following others easier by adding QR codes to the social platform. Simply swipe open the nav drawer and tap QR code. You can then use the reader to scan someone else's QR code or bring up your own code to let someone else follow you in an instant.

Twitter app for Android TV

November 16: Twitter officially launched its Android TV app for streaming live Thursday Night Football games and watching Periscope videos. While it is also possible to browse Twitter using the Android TV app, it is not possible to compose tweets with it. Twitter already has an app on Apple TV, Fire TV and Xbox One.

Silencing the trolls

November 15: Twitter cracks down on online harassment, with a new suite of tools aimed at weeding out the less-than-friendly types in your Twitter feed. The new tools include the ability to mute hashtags and specific words, phrases and even emoji you don't want to see in your feed. It's a small step, but definitely one in the right direction.

Google’s Top 10 trending games of 2016 includes slither.io, No Man’s Sky and Overwatch [US]

Alongside its list of the top ten trending searches of 2016, Google has also posted more specific results relating to the biggest trends in gaming. Of the featured titles – most of which will be household names – the top two most trending searches are both Android compatible and feature similar gameplay.

slither.io and agar.io are massively multiplayer games in which players take control of a single entity (a cell in agar.io and a worm in slither.io) and must consume food to grow in size and score points. Surrounding players are competing to do the same with the aim of becoming the highest scorer – and maintaining their place there.

The success of these games has no doubt been helped by the number of let's play videos covering them on YouTube and the fact that they're available for free on iOS, Android and browsers.

Google's use of "trending" means topics that maintained the highest number of searches over the longest period of time in 2016 when compared to their popularity in 2015.

Other titles on the list include Overwatch, Warcraft and Call of Duty, which arrive from the joint forces of Activision Blizzard, and Madden 17 and Battlefield 1 from publishing giant EA (Electronic Arts). Open world survival title No Man's Sky, from British indie studio Hello Games, also made the list at number 9.

Amazon Prime Video now available in more than 200 countries across the globe

Amazon has made a big announcement today. The company is expanding its Prime Video service to more than 200 countries around the world. By signing up, you'll be able to watch the popular Grand Tour show starring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May as well as other Amazon original series including Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, The Man in the High Castle, and others.

The service costs $2.99/€2.99 per month for the first six months. After the initial promotional period, the price gets bumped up to $5.99/€5.99 per month. Either way though, it's a lot cheaper than Netflix. Amazon is also offering a seven-day free trial, so you're able to test out the service before you decide to subscribe to it.

Users can access the Prime Video service on their Android or iOS devices, Amazon's Fire tablets, a few smart TVs from Samsung and LG as well as online at primevideo.com. The good thing about it is that you can download all the content that's available, so you can watch it even when you don't have internet access. The shows are in English, with French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish subtitles. Dubbed versions are also available.

Prime Video is a direct competitor to Netflix, which expanded its operations to 130 countries at the beginning of the year. And although Amazon's service is now available to a larger audience, Netflix still offers more content than its rival.

Lenovo K6 Note launched in India; on sale from December 17

Back at IFA 2016, Lenovo announced the K6 family of smartphones — the K6, K6 Power, and K6 Note. The company already released the K6 Power in India last week for Rs. 9,999 and now, Lenovo has announced that the K6 Note will soon be available for purchase as well.

The device will start selling on Saturday, December 17, in around 15,000 retail stores across the country. It will be available in two different variants. You'll be able to get your hands on a model with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage or a slightly more powerful version that has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of space. The devices will retail for Rs. 13,999 and Rs. 15,499 respectively.

The device also features a 4,000 mAh battery, runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and has a fingerprint scanner located on the back, below the camera. It will be available in Dark Gray, Gold, and Silver.

CyanogenMod 14.1 now supported on Galaxy S3, Moto X Play and more

CyanogenMod 14.1 nightlies have arrived to another handful of Android devices. The latest CyanogenMod version, based on Android 7.1 Nougat, was introduced in early November and since has been rolled out to a number of popular devices.

Snapchat update adds long-awaited group messaging feature

In the latest Snapchat update, Snap Inc. has added group messaging functionality to its photo messaging app. Though it was previously limited to one-on-one conversations, Snapchat's new group messages allow for up to 16 people to take part in chats. This feature appears in the Snapchat update to version 9.45.0.0.

As with a regular Snapchat message, group Snaps can be opened once and played once before they are deleted and will remain available in the group for 24 hours after being sent. The new interface also allows you to tap another members' names to jump into an individual conversation with them.

Additionally, the latest Snapchat update introduces a 'Scissors' tool which lets users cut out part of their Snap to create a sticker for their sticker drawer. This feature will appear on iOS first, with the Android rollout arriving later.
