ZTE Nubia Z11 and Nubia N1 launched in India; registrations open December 16

About six months ago, ZTE announced the Z11 and N1 smartphones under its Nubia sub-brand. Now, the company has said that it's bringing both of the devices to Indian consumers. The Nubia Z11 will be available for Rs 29,999, while you'll be able to get the Nubia N1 for Rs 11,999. Both of the devices will be sold exclusively through Amazon India, with registrations for the first sale starting on Friday, December 16.

As you're able to tell by looking at the price, the Nubia Z11 is the more powerful of the two. It features a 5.5-inch Full HD edge-to-edge display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 processor, and 6 GB of RAM. The device also has 64 GB of storage, a 16 MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture, and a front-facing selfie snapper with an 8 MP sensor. It runs Android Marshmallow and comes with a 3,000 mAh battery.

If you're looking for a more affordable device, the Nubia N1 might be more up your alley. It comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display and is powered by Mediatek's Helio P10 processor along with 3 GB of RAM. The device also boasts a 13 MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, a front-facing camera with a 13 MP sensor, 64 GB of space, and the same version of Android as the already described Nubia Z11. But the biggest selling point of the device just might be its large 5,000 mAh battery.

Are you excited to hear that the Nubia Z11 and N1 will soon be available in India? Which device would you rather opt for?

This year’s most popular Google search terms pretty much sum up 2016

According to this year's most popular Google terms, 2016 was a year filled with unexpected political outcomes and people walking around catching virtual animals.

Google Search can now answer much more complex questions

November 16, 2015

2016 is coming to an end already, and we all know what that means: we get to find out some of the most popular search terms on Google. These top trending search terms mean that they had the highest spike in traffic over a long period of time during 2016 relative to the year before. Well, here they are, the top ten searches of 2016:

  1. Powerball
  2. Prince
  3. Hurricane Matthew
  4. Pokémon Go
  5. io
  6. Olympics
  7. David Bowie
  8. Trump
  9. Election
  10. Hillary Clinton

These ten terms essentially sum up 2016. The January Powerball jackpot was the biggest in the world at $1.56 billion, which was eventually split three ways, and it seems like people were very curious about the jaw-dropping amount. Prince takes the second place. The legend died back in April at the age of 57, may he rest in peace. Hurricane Matthew was the third most popular search term. The destructive tropical cyclone took the lives of 1,600 people, most of them from the cholera-stricken Haiti (smh, UN).

The fourth shouldn't come as a surprise. Pokemon Go. What exploded this past summer died down quite fast, but that doesn't mean it didn't break all sorts of world records. The Internet was overflowing with articles about the augmented reality game: from tips to reckless players catching virtual creatures to their deaths. Welcome to the 21st century.

Among the rest, three are related to the US presidential election, and not surprisingly so. From what felt like centuries of campaigning all the way to the jaw-dropping result, this year's election was a rollercoaster ride. And with the most recent CIA report, who knows how much more traffic these would generate in the next few weeks.

At any rate, there it is, folks – 2016 was a tumultuous year filled with deaths of beloved celebrities (as well as the Galaxy Note 7), devastating natural disasters, political demagogues, and continuing war violence. Here's hoping that 2017 is more about peace, love, and of course, Android.

Here is what we know, and what’s rumored, about the Nokia 2017 comeback

As we end 2016 and look forward to 2017, one of the biggest and most anticipated events of next year will be the return of the Nokia brand to mobile devices. In mid-2016, the Finland-based company reached an agreement with HMD Global Oy, which will launch new smartphones – running Android – with the Nokia brand next year.

In fact, just this week HMD actually announced its first two Nokia-branded phones. Before you get too excited though, these devices are feature phones: the Nokia 150 and 150 Dual SIM. Both will go on sale in parts of Europe, Asia and other markets in the first quarter of 2017.

However, we're more interested in the launch of new Android smartphones with the Nokia name. Here's what we definitely know about those plans (spoiler alert: not much yet) along with the rumors about what we may or may not expect from these new products.

5 things Nokia, and HMD Global, need to do for a successful 2017 Android phone launch

Confirmed

HMD Global has the rights for the next 10 years to release feature phones, smartphones and tablets with the Nokia branding. The first smartphones to use the Android operating system are scheduled to go on sale sometime in the first half of 2017.

HMD is technically a startup, formed just in the last six months and based in Finland, just like Nokia. It's also run by former Nokia executives led by CEO Arto Nummela and President Florian Seiche. Technically, Nokia will have no design input in the making of these new Android smartphones; all of that will be handled by HMD. The phones will be made by FIH Mobile Limited, which is a subsidiary of Foxconn, one of the biggest assemblers of smartphones and the maker of the iPhone.

The company has also hired Pekka Rantala to be its chief marketing officer. He was not only a former senior vice-president of marketing at Nokia, he also served as the CEO of Rovio Entertainment, the creators of the Angry Birds mobile game franchise. Rantala has a ton of experience in getting people interested in mobile brands and may be the perfect choice to help relaunch Nokia's name in the mobile phone market.

HMD has also selected Mother, one of the world's biggest ad agencies to handle its global launch of Nokia smartphones. Mother's clients include Target, Calvin Klein and many more major companies and brands.

So far, HMD has only offered vague statements about what their Nokia-branded smartphones will be like. They claim the phones will offer consumers "innovation, quality and experience" and will combine that with Nokia's previous reputation of offering iconic "design, robustness, and reliability". HMD reportedly plans to spend $500 million in marketing over the next three years to support the sale of the new Nokia phones.

Believe it or not, that's all that Nokia and HMD have confirmed so far for their mobile phone return. But what about all the rumors about what those first Android smartphones might actually be like?

Rumored

HMD Global will be attending the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain in late February, and most of the online, but unconfirmed, rumors claims that the company will make the first official reveals of its Android smartphones at that event. We certainly think MWC 2017 is the perfect venue for the Nokia relaunch – it's just a question of whether they will be ready by then.

As far as the actual smartphones that the company may announce, things are much more foggy. One site that claims to have info on those phones is a fan site called NokiaPowerUser, via "unnamed sources". Keep in mind these reports are highly suspect and should be taken with a big grain of salt, but here they are for your evaluation.

NPU says that the first Nokia branded phone will be called, rather unimaginatively, the D1C . This sounds more like a code name than one that might actually be used for a shipping product, so even if that part of the rumor is true, it's likely that name will change between now and the official reveal.

The site says that there will be two variants of the first Nokia-branded phone from HMD. One will reportedly have a 5-inch display, 2 GB of RAM and a 13 MP rear camera, while the other will have a 5.5-inch screen, 3 GB of RAM and a 16 MP rear camera. Both variants are supposed to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor inside running at 1.5 GHz, along with 16 GB of onboard storage, along with an 8 MP front-facing camera and Android 7.0 Nougat pre-installed. Pricing for the 2 GB version is supposed to be around $150 while the 3 GB version is rumored for about $200.

There have also been some alleged screenshots and renders of this phone floating around the Internet, but quite frankly, they are of even less legitimacy than the hardware specs we have just mentioned so we won't even post them here. Again, we want to emphasize the fact that the above specs have not been confirmed in any way, shape or form and they may turn out to be way off from the final product. They are presented here just to represent the latest rumors about the new Nokia smartphone.

Challenges

While HMD will have a lot of good will from many fans of Nokia, it will have many challenges to overcome. There is a lot of stiff competition in the Android smartphone space already, and even though it has a lot of experience behind it HDM is still a very young company. It will have to prove itself right out of the gate that it can go up against established businesses like Samsung, Lenovo, LG, HTC and others for the smartphone audience.

Nokia must also offer innovative features for its phones that make them stand out from the crowd, yet also make them affordable enough so that consumers will give them more than just a passing look. Finally, HMD needs an absolutely killer marketing campaign that will combine nostalgia for the Nokia brand with the new beginning for its smartphone products.

What do you want to see in HMD's Nokia branded phones and do you think the name came be resurrected in the industry in 2017? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Google makes it easier to swap iOS for Android with Drive

Google has rolled out new features to its cloud storage service, Google Drive, to help transfer content from iOS devices to Android. Google announced on Twitter yesterday that Drive now supports photo, video, contact and calendar event transfers, enabled through the iOS Drive app.

To make use of the service, iOS users must first install Google Drive to their iPhone and navigate to the Backup page in the Settings menu. After selecting the content they want to keep, hitting Start Backup will begin the sync process to the Cloud. Once it's complete, users can open Drive on their new Android handset and their files will appear there.

Amazon Prime Video service launches in India; brings regional content in several languages

After a long wait, Amazon has finally launched the Amazon Prime Video service in India. The premium video service is available to Amazon Prime subscribers and allows you to stream movies and TV shows (including Amazon Original Series).

Launched in July this year, the Amazon Prime subscription in India is available at an introductory price of ₹499 ($7.5) for a year (expected to go up to ₹999 per year). Amazon Prime Video directly competes with Netflix which launched in India earlier this year, and has plans starting at ₹500 per month and local player, Hotstar which has a freemium model with premium plan available for ₹199 per month. Of course, the Amazon Prime subscription has other benefits too when you're shopping from Amazon.

There's an option to download the content or offline viewing, however, there is no Chromecast support at the moment. You can choose the streaming quality between Best, Better, Good, and Data Saver depending on your internet connection and data plans.

In the months leading to the launch, Amazon India has announced partnerships with several content partners for Prime Video like Dharma Productions, T-Series, Vishesh Films, Green Gold Animation, et al. There's a clear focus on regional content with movies available in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali apart from English and Hindi.

What are your thoughts on Amazon Prime Video? On first glance, there's more Indian content than Netflix has managed in the last few months, and in more languages. Give it a whirl, and let us know how you like it.

Wemo announces Google Home compatibility for its smart accessories

Google Home review – the future of the home?

Google introduced Google Home back in October along with its Pixel smartphones. It's essentially Google's answer to the ever-growing voice-assisted smart home appliance market not unlike Amazon's Echo. The difference, of course, is that Amazon's Echo uses Alexa, and Google's speaker uses Google Assistant.

Given Google Assistant's capabilities, if you're keen on voice assistant services, this is the device to have for your home. And supported devices are growing steadily – now you can use Wemo's core products such as the Wemo Switch, Wemo Insight Switch, and Wemo Light Switch with Google Home. In other words, you can simply say the wake word, "OK Google," and ask Google Home to turn on a Wemo-controlled home appliance whether it's a fan or a porch light.

As CTO for Wemo, Brian Van Harlingen explains, voice controlled home assistance is growing rapidly, and Wemo's integration into Google Home will be an integral part in that:

Voice control continues to be a major driver of smart home integration, and we're thrilled to expand our voice offerings with Google Home and Google Assistant. Wemo stands for simplicity and convenience, and working with Google Home is yet another way we can live up to those values and provide our users with an easy, useful and fun smart home experience.

Google Home may sound robotic at times, but overall our review has found it to be a well-designed home gadget with impressive far-field microphones and audio quality. If you already own a Google Home, you can get Wemo's home switches for around $30 each on its official website.

What are your thoughts on voice assisted home appliances? Is it the future or still too early to tell? Let us know by leaving a comment below!
