Is Lineage Android Distribution the new CyanogenMod name?

Lineage Android Distribution could be the new name given to CyanogenMod, it has emerged. Android Police discovered a GitHub repo bearing the Lineage Android Distribution name, currently being updated with Android code associated with CyanogenMod, suggesting that this is the new home of the project.

The news follows soon after Cyanogen Inc separated ties with co-founder Steve Kondik following a post in which he discussed problems he'd encountered at the company. Kondik ended his post with some questions for the community regarding the direction CyanogenMod should go in next – suggesting he was still interested in pursuing it.

The Lineage Android Distribution page is now being populated with content on almost an hourly basis but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

As for the name, LAD (from Lineage Android Distribution) could become the new CyanogenMod moniker, though it also may be titled "LineageOS", which can be seen elsewhere on the page. Android Police also speculates that the project may be referred to as LAOS (Lineage Android Operating System), citing sources close to the project.

Facebook might release the Events app for Android today

Around 100 million people use Facebook events on a daily basis. That's why the company decided to launch a standalone Events app back in October. Initially available for iOS devices, the app is now making its way over to Android. According to TechCrunch, Facebook will release the Android version of its Events app today.

The app lets you search for events that are scheduled near your location, and check out the ones your friends are going to as well as those announced by the Pages you like. You can also browse through recommendations that are based on time, location, and your interests, or find interesting events with the help of an interactive map.

The app comes with its own calendar, which is especially handy if you're a heavy user and attend a lot of events. It's able to pull in appointments from other calendar apps on your device too, to make sure you can see everything in one place.

Even though Events is a standalone app, your activities within the app will still be seen on your Facebook profile. These include, among other things, the events you are interested in or are going to attend. As already mentioned, the app might be launched today, which means you'll be able to download it to your device via the Google Play Store.

If you're thinking of trying out the app once it's released, let us know by posting a comment down below.

Android and Chrome OS merger won’t happen, says Android senior VP

Google VP of Android, Chrome OS and Play Hiroshi Lockheimer has quashed rumors of an Android and Chrome OS merger. Speaking on the All About Android podcast, Lockheimer was asked about the differences between Chrome OS and Android, which drew him to the subject of merging the two systems.

"For us, there's no point in merging [Chrome OS and Android]." He said, adding "They're both successful. We just want to make sure that both sides benefit from each other."

Lockheimer discussed aspects of the platforms which have now been shared, such as bringing Android apps to Chrome OS, and introducing Chrome OS's seamless updates to Android Nougat, but denied the claims that the platforms would become one. "You'll see a lot more of that happening, where we're sort of cross-pollinating," he said. "But not, sort of, a merge."

Rumors from last year indicated that Google would unify its Android and Chrome OS systems, and speculation as recent as September suggested that Google was prototyping 'some form' of Android and Chrome OS hybrid software code-named Andromeda. Whether they become one or system or not, it seems likely that they will become increasingly similar.

Do you think Android and Chome OS should merge? Or are they better as two separate systems? Give us your thoughts in the comments.

Google acquires Cronologics and its smartwatch OS to help improve Android Wear

Google is still looking to improve its standing in the smartwatch industry with Android Wear . Today, it was revealed that a smartwatch startup, founded in part by former Google employees, will now be working on Android Wear directly. That startup, Cronologics, announced that its team has been acquired by Google. The company formed in 2014 and had been developing its own smartwatch OS, alongside its own device, the CoWatch.

Best Android Wear watches

The CoWatch launched just a few months ago in September, and its biggest feature is that it supported Amazon's Alexa digital assistant. It allowed users to use voice commands to do things like order a pizza or get the latest weather reports. Now that Cronologics is officially part of Google, the fate of the CoWatch is unknown, although we cannot imagine it will be available for sale for much longer.

In a statement on the company's site, Cronologics said that the team still plans to "continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond." Originally set for launch by the end of 2016, Google now plans to officially make Android Wear 2.0 available sometime in early 2017.

As usual with these kind of small acquisitions, the specific financial details of Google purchasing Cronologics were not disclosed. Does this new move signal that Google is getting more serious about improving Android Wear and its smartwatch technology in general?
