Augmented Reality – Everything you need to know

July 20, 2016

Announced in June and initially available on November 1, the Tango phone has had a very leisurely launch. Offering a bunch of really intriguing but arguably niche augmented reality tech, the Phab 2 Pro is fortunately quite affordable.

With a 6.4-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 652 (Tango edition) chipset, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of built-in storage, the Tango phone is not a bad purchase for $500 even if you discount all the awesome AR potential it contains.

If you want the skinny on everything the Tango phone can do, be sure to read our detailed Phab 2 Pro hands on and know that things are only going to get more interesting as time goes by.

15 best games with gamepad support for Android

November 1, 2016

The game will set you back the princely sum of $6.99 but for fans of Bully that's a very small price to pay. You can enjoy the entire original game along with all the extras included in the 2008 Scholarship edition of the game. For the mobile release though, Bully has received updated graphics for hi-res displays and features both on-screen gamepad controls.

In case you're not familiar, Bully is like a high school version of Grand Theft Auto. Featuring the usual colorful cast of characters and situations, Bully sees a 15 year-old prep school misfit named Jimmy make his way through all the fun hi-jinx you would likely remember if you went to a school with a name like Bullworth Academy.

It's pretty classic stuff, from its dated texture mapping to in-game mechanics you wouldn't have seen in several years. Bully offers you the chance to "stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, beat the jocks at dodge ball, play pranks, win or lose the girl and survive a year in the worst school around." If you're looking for a stroll down memory lane, hit the install button below.

Did you play bully back in the day? What other classics would you like to see revived on mobile?

Deal: SanDisk Ultra 200GB microSD for $64 on Amazon

sandisk-200-gb-microsd-cardsandisk-200-gb-microsd-card

You know how smartphones frequently say they support microSD expansion up to 256 GB? Well, until recently such microSD cards hardly even existed. They're much more commonplace now, but they still tend to be more expensive than most of us would like. That's why when a deal like this comes around, you're going to want to pay attention.

The 200 GB (sorry, not the 256 GB version) SanDisk Ultra microSD card is currently available on Amazon for just $64. While that's not its lowest ever price – that honor came with a $49 price tag during Cyber Week – it's still a worthy addition to your smartphone kit if you didn't pull the trigger on Black Friday.

If you want to get all crazy you can still order a 256 GB card, but that'll set you back a hefty $199, so the 200 GB version should serve you just fine. There's no telling how much stock Amazon has though so if you've been regretting now buying some expandable storage during Black Friday, now might just be the next best time to do so.

asus-zenfone-3-zoom

asus-zenfone-3-zoom

Asus has already released a few devices under the Zenfone 3 name. These include, among others, the Zenfone 3 Deluxe, Zenfone 3 Ultra, and Zenfone 3 Max. But apparently, the company is not done yet, as a new device under the name of Zenfone 3 Zoom has recently been certified by TENAA – the Chinese equivalent of the FCC.

The Zenfone 3 Zoom is the company's first smartphone with a dual camera setup. According to the TENAA listing, the device packs 16 MP dual rear cameras and a front-facing selfie snapper with a 13 MP sensor. It features a 5.5-inch screen with 2.5D glass on top and Full HD resolution.

You'll find Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625 processor clocked at 2.0 GHz under the hood, alongside 2, 3 or 4 GB of RAM. There are also three storage options available, so you'll be able to get your hands on a 16, 32 or 64 GB version of the device.

ASUS ZenFone 3 review

The device is made of metal and packs a large 4,850 mAh battery in its 7.99 mm thick body. It runs on Android Marshmallow with ZenUI on top, but we expect that Asus will upgrade it to the latest and greatest Android Nougat eventually. It also has a fingerprint sensor located on the back of the device, which will keep your data safe.

Asus's Zenfone 3 Zoom will be available in three colors — Black, Silver, and Gold — and although the company has not revealed its launch date, it just might happen that the device will be officially announced at CES next month in Las Vegas. Asus has already scheduled its Zenovation Event for January 4, 2017.

So, what do you think about the upcoming Zenfone 3 Zoom? Does the dual camera setup make you want to buy the device?

Problems with the Google Pixel and Pixel XL and how to fix them

sunday giveaway

sunday giveaway

Google moved into the premium smartphone space with their latest smartphone offerings, the Pixel and the Pixel XL. The new devices, that have been designed from the ground up by Google, are priced to compete directly with the current flagships from Apple and Samsung, and come with some great features, like the Google Assistant. If you are looking for the best that Android has to offer, it doesn't get more Google than the Pixel and Pixel XL.

However, as is the case with any smartphone or tablet, the Pixel and Pixel XL are not without their issues. If you have come across any of them, we're here to help you out, with this roundup of some of the common problems that Pixel and Pixel XL owners face, and offer potential solutions on how to fix them!

Disclaimer: Not every Pixel and Pixel XL smartphone will have these issues, and in fact, it is more than likely that you won't come across any of these problems at all.

Problem #1 – Screen auto-rotate not working

google pixel xl initial review aa (39 of 48) display

google pixel xl initial review aa (39 of 48) display

Some have found that the auto-rotate feature does not work as expected even though the setting is enabled.

Potential solutions:

  • A rogue app may be causing this issue. To check if this is the case, boot the device in Safe Mode (you can find how to do so below), and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, a recently-installed application causing the issue. Uninstall any apps that were added just before the problem started, and see if that fixes it.
  • This could also be an issue with the accelerometer and G-sensor as well. Download an app from the Google Play Store like GPS & Status Toolbox and re-calibrate the sensors, and see if that fixes it. If this is proves to be a hardware issue, the only option will be to pick up a replacement.
  • A temporary workaround that has worked for some is using an third-party app, such as Rotation Control, that will let you manually trigger the switch to the landscape orientations.

Problem #2 – Text messages not working

thumb google pixel and pixel xl hands on aa no watermark

thumb google pixel and pixel xl hands on aa no watermark

Some users have found that they are unable to send or receive text messages on their new Pixel or Pixel XL.

Potential solutions:

  • This issue has been faced mostly by users who have switched to the Pixel from the iPhone, and is related to iMessage. If you still have your old iPhone, go to Settings – Messages and turn off iMessage. If you have already sold it, you will need de-register the number from iMessage. You can do so here.
  • Make sure that you haven't accidentally blocked some users. Open the Messenger app and open the additional menu by tapping on the three vertical dots at the top right corner. Open "Blocked Contacts" and see if there are any numbers that aren't supposed to be there.

Problem #3 – Delayed notifications

google pixel and pixel xl first look hands on aa-24

google pixel and pixel xl first look hands on aa-24

Some users have come across delayed notifications, with notifications coming in a few hours later sometimes. This is usually related to any email and messaging apps that are running.

Potential solutions:

  • This issue seems to be caused by the new active Doze mode that is available with the Pixel and Pixel XL to help get a lot more out of your battery life. However, it looks it results in notifications not arriving, or getting delayed. Until the apps are updated to address this problem, you may be better off removing these apps, like Gmail, Whatsapp, and more, from the list of apps that are optimized. Go to Battery – Settings (three vertical dots) – Battery Optimization, open the "All apps" section from the drop down menu, go to the relevant app, and tap on "Don't optimize." So far, users have reported that this doesn't affect battery life significantly either.

Problem #4 – "OK, Google" voice command issues

google pixel and pixel xl first look hands on aa-23

google pixel and pixel xl first look hands on aa-23

Some users have found that the "OK, Google" voice command needs to be repeated a few times to launch the Google Assistant.

Potential solutions:

  • This issue seems to be related to the Fingerprint Gestures app, which adds a slew of features that you can use with the fingerprint scanner. While the app is helpful, uninstalling the app does seem to fix the issue with using the voice command. Until the app is updated, you will have to choose between using the gestures or having to repeat "OK, Google" a couple of times.
  • This may also be related to Doze mode, with the device requiring a few attempts before recognizing the voice command. Hopefully, a future software update will address this problem.

Problem #5 – Issues that will be fixed with future software updates

google pixel xl initial review aa (27 of 48) camera

There are some problems that do not have any workarounds or solutions available, and the only option is to wait for a software update.

  • Camera issues: Quite a few users have come across the Halo effect problem, and now, Pixel owners are also seeing purple lines and bars across the viewfinder. This is software problem that Google is working on addressing and will be fixed with a future software update. Until then, you can use a third-party camera app that you can download from the Google Play Store.
  • Microphone issues: Some users have come across issues with the device microphone, with people at the other of the line unable to hear anything during calls. Toggling the speakerphone while on a call seems to work, and a reboot seems to temporarily fix the problem, but this is another software issue that will be fixed.
  • Bluetooth issues: Users had a lot of trouble getting their smartphone to connect to their cars, Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches, and more. The Bluetooth problems appear to have been addressed in the Android 7.1.1 update that is rolling out right now.

Problem #6 – Connectivity issues

google pixel xl initial review aa (22 of 48) quick settings

google pixel xl initial review aa (22 of 48) quick settings

As is the case with any new device, you may find yourself facing some connectivity issues with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Potential solutions:

Wi-Fi issues

  • Turn the device and the router off for at least ten seconds, then turn them back and retry the connection.
  • Go to Settings – Power saving and ensure that this option is turned off.
  • Use the Wi-Fi Analyzer to check how crowded your channel is, and switch to a better option.
  • Forget the Wi-Fi connection by going to Settings – Wi-Fi and long tapping the connection you want, then selecting "Forget". Re-enter the details and try again.
  • Make sure the router firmware is up to date.
  • Make sure the applications and software on the device are up to date.
  • Go into Wi-Fi – Settings – Advanced and make a note of your device MAC address, then make sure that it is allowed access in the router's MAC filter.

Bluetooth issues

  • With issues when connecting to the car, check the manufacturer's manual for the device and the car and reset your connections.
  • Ensure that you are not missing a vital part of the connection process.
  • Go to Settings – Bluetooth and ensure nothing needs changing
  • Go into Settings – Bluetooth delete all prior pairings and try setting them up again from scratch.
  • When it comes to issues with multiple device connection, only a future update will be able to address this problem.
